Fin Whale, Heysham Harbour
Winter 2000 |
The largest single item of wildlife, other than the odd tree, was this 33ft immature female Fin Whale, the skeleton of which may loom forth from Lancaster rubbish tip in a few months time! It was found floating in the sea off Heysham Harbour (27/11) and it is a great mystery how it appeared so far north in the Irish Sea without being previously spotted, dead or alive. No doubt continuously rough seas played a part here.
