Specialist Birding Tours to Peru, Brazil, Chile and Bolivia. |
Atlantic Forests of Eastern Brazil, August 22nd - 9th September 2003
Led by COLIN BUSHELL Colin@toucantours.co.uk
Birding in Brazil’s Atlantic Forests http://atlanticforests.mysite.freeserve.com
Group members: Kraig & Kathy Kemper, Kevin Stracey & Lizzie Dodd, Peter Evans and Iain Outlaw.
After months of planning and rescheduling we decided on an itinerary allowing us to find a good selection of Atlantic Forest species. The extra days in Minas Gerais at the cerrado sites were an exciting conclusion to a tour already packed with rare and range-restricted species.
Despite the dreadful weather nearly all targets were met. Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of the tour was the nightbirding. Constant cold evenings often accompanied by drizzle made searching for owls and nightjars almost impossible. There was very little vocalisation and birds were generally unresponsive to playback. The persistent drizzle also made the observation of some canopy birds (such as Pale-browed Treehunter and Spot-backed Antshrike) difficult or even impossible, especially in foothills such as at Sertao das Cortias.
Conversely we did very well in the forests especially at Itatiaia, despite low cloud and poor visibility. The weather in Minas Gerais was a stark contrast. Colin returned to Sao Paulo after this tour to meet another group and the rain was heavier!
