An excellent tour once again in the Amazonian rainforests of Loreto dept. Peru. Highlights of this tour included Nocturnal Curassow, Undulated Antshrike, Black-necked Red-Cotinga (one of nine species of cotinga seen on this trip) and Zimmer’s Woodcreeper on the river islands. The island are of course an integral part of this birding tour so it was good to see a good selection of ‘obligate Amazonian island birds’. Time was also spent on the famous canopy walkway near the ACTS research station and in search of the recently discovered species on the white-sand forest.
For a few the tour was extended with an intense birding circuit in central Peru based around the Central Highway. A detailed report can be found on www.toucantours.co.uk but highlights included Diademed Sandpiper-Plover, Junin Grebe, Rufous-backed and Great Inca-Finches, Masked Saltator, Brown-flanked Tanager, Pale-tailed Canastero, White-cheeked Cotinga and Masked Fruiteater.
