A Report from birdtours.co.uk

South Portugal,

Phil Lillywhite

I used the report by David & Amanda Mason on a very recent week long holiday to the Algarve. I found it most useful. Although the trip was not especially bird oriented, I did manage some birding in 2 particular areas, and thought you might be interested in the highlights, especially as the timing coincides almost exactly with David & Amanda's trip a year previously.

3/1/05 - Rock Bunting (1) in hills around Faz Fato, north of Cacela Nova, east of Tavira.

4/1/05 - c.200 Greater Flamingo in the salt pans west of the N122 near Castro Marim - access via dirt track after railway crossing before bridge off road to Castro Marim from the N125 just north of village of Sao Bartolomeu. C.10 Little Bustard here on 9/1.

5/1 - Gull-billed Tern (1) on Santa Luzia saltmarsh, just west of Tavira.

6/1 near Cap St Vincent - Black Kite (1), Quail (4), and a first winter Ring Ouzel. Black-winged Kite over car between Lagos and Sagres, and an Osprey near Sagres.

8/1 - 2 Bluethroat (white-spotted) on Tavira saltmarsh. Also 5/6 Mediterranean Gull here.

9/1 - c. 40 Stone Curlew on Castro Marim salt pans east of N122. Also, a Caspian Tern here.
