Wednesday 14th May

Good journey down to East Midlands airport and new departures lounge impressive. However check- in delayed and hand luggage weighed. After breakfast announcement that flight delayed by half an hour.  At this stage bmibaby is winning hands down. Flight finally delayed one hour. Arrived Barcelona at 1408 hrs.  Made our way to terminal B for car hire.  After a worrying delay Record car hire representative collected us from the terminal and sped us away to their local office.  They were very friendly and helpful and we were soon on our way towards Tarragona with good directions. We had two vehicles a Fiat Stilo Estate and a Renault Megane Scenic. We managed Magpie, Swallow, Swift and Spotless Starling around Barcelona. We arrived at San Carles de la Rapita by 1730 hrs and soon found Hotel Miami in the centre of town.  After quickly emptying our luggage into our rooms we made our way to the Ebro Delta.  We were soon onto Audouin's Gulls near the harbour and further along the delta found Fan-tailed Warbler.  Many of the paddy fields alongside the road held Little Egret, Purple Heron and Black-winged Stilt and a single Squacco Heron accompanied a Cattle Egret.  Several Kentish Plovers adorned the edges of some of the pools and Whiskered Tern and Little Tern were hawking above.  A single Black Tern was an added bonus and a group of eighteen Wood Sandpiper at the side of the road made good viewing.  As we neared L' Encanyissada large numbers of wildfowl could be seen in the distance some of which were identified as Red Crested Pochard.  Time now to return to the hotel for dinner and taste the fruits of the sea.  We were not to be disappointed and enjoyed a high quality meal with good wine and good company.  Later several of us retired to a small bar to partake of some good brandy and whisky. A perfect end to our first day.

Thursday 15th May

After a good breakfast and collecting our picnic lunch we headed straight for L' Encanyissada and the viewing platforms.  We were soon rewarded with stunning views of Great Reed Warbler, Great White Egret and Little Bittern. In the reeds a Savi's Warbler was heard along with Water Rail and a single Tree Sparrow was nice surprise.  Close by a Purple Gallinule showed itself and in the distance Marsh Harrier glided above the marsh. At the next viewing platform an unexpected Grasshopper Warbler was heard and a Night Heron lazily crossed the marsh.  At the visitor centre Pied Flycatcher was added to the list along with Black Kite in the distance.  After enjoying our picnic lunch we moved onto Bassa de la Tancada where we were soon watching Crested Lark and Short-toed Lark. There were also several migrants about including Whinchat, Wheatear, Redstart, Spotted Flycatcher, Olivaceous Warbler, Willow Warbler & Bonelli's Warbler.  On the lake we had Greater Flamingo, Avocet, Redshank and Slender-billed Gulls.  Our next port of call was Punta de la Banya but on the track leading there we were to be treated to excellent views of Collared Pratincole. Once at the reserve Sandwich Terns were much in evidence and three Oystercatchers were on the beach.    Also from the hides were Knot, Grey Plover and Black-tailed Godwit.  Calling back at Bassa de la Tancada we added Caspian Tern and Blue-headed Wagtail. Returned to base for another great meal and an earlier night.

Friday16th May

Before breakfast Brian and myself managed a walk to Eucalyptus Beach near Bassa de la Tancada and added Hoopoe to the growing list. Off to the northern Ebro after breakfast passing through Sant Jaume and collecting Little Ringed Plover on our travels. After taking the ferry across the river we drove east to a reserve at Garxal near Ruimar.  Rather disappointing but still managed White-winged Black Tern, Common Sandpiper and Lesser Short-toed Lark.  Back to the car for lunch and then a short walk to the beach and dunes resulting in another good tick, Gull-billed Tern.  Drove back to Deltebre and the information centre to meet Jim and Dave.   Following information at the centre regarding Lesser Crested Tern we headed for the point at Fangas.  This was a better site and after a long walk we were enjoying views of Ringed Plover, Greenshank, Sanderling, Dunlin, Turnstone and Spotted Redshank and many others including both a Gull-billed Tern and Slender-billed Gull colony.  Onto Canal Vell after this and before taking many wrong turns we arrived at an excellent mirador overlooking a massive lake.  En-route Glossy Ibis was another success and once at the lake Black-necked Grebe was added.  On our walk back to the car we were surprised to find a 3rd summer Little Gull in one of the paddy fields, looking rather strange and bedraggled.  Long journey back to Sant Carles and then our usual excellent meal and heaps of Rioja.

Saturday 17th May

After breakfast we set off for Quinto on the plains via Tortosa, Bot and Alcaniz. Between Tortosa and Bot we heard Nightingale and saw Woodchat Shrike and Crag Martin.  In the mountains near Bot we found a pair of Bonelli's Eagle, a dark phase Booted Eagle, Raven, and Blue Rock Thrush.  Past Bot we noted Bee Eater and Woodlark. At Valdealgorfa we stopped for an ola break and picked up Golden Oriole and Short-toed Eagle. Stopped at Alcaniz for rations and Peregrine Falcon circled above.  Onto the lagoons west of Alcaniz and immediately found Tawny Pipit. After adding Little Owl and Alpine Swift an incredible sequence of birds followed. We started with Golden Eagle and Griffon Vulture, and then had several Lesser Kestrel feeding. A Red-billed Chough was sat on an old building and a Hobby glided overhead. This was then followed by an Egyptian Vulture and a Great Grey Shrike, which was found, sat on top of a bush.  Moving onto Quinto we located Restaurant Quinto and collected the keys for our rooms at a pension called Hotel Rioja.  Dinner followed at 2100 hrs to end yet another stunning day.

Sunday 18th May

Up at 0530 hrs to arrive at Belchite for dawn.  Unfortunately chose the wrong track and didn't reach El Planeron until too late.  However brilliant site for larks and easily found Calandra Lark, Short-toed Lark, Lesser Short-toed Lark and Thekla Lark.  Also heard Quail, Stone Curlew and Corn Bunting. In the distance a female Montagu's Harrier was seen quartering and Red-legged Partridge was also noted. Both Black-bellied and Pin-tailed Sandgrouse were seen well and finally a Meadow Pipit was noted close to the track. After breakfast we travelled to Sastago to check out a river gorge along the Ebro.  We were soon listening to Nightingale, Cetti's Warbler and Blackcap.  The real star however was a Penduline Tit, which was building a nest.  Cirl Bunting was heard and later provided good views.  Raptors were in good evidence with several Black Kites, Short-toed Eagle, Red Kite and perfect views of three Honey Buzzards. Finally whilst having lunch our first Carrion Crow flew by.  After lunch we visited the area around Laguna la Playa but added no extra birds to our ever-growing list.  After an ola break at Bujaraloz we headed back to Quinto for an early bath.  Dinner at 2100 hrs as the previous night.

Monday19th May

To Belchite for 0600 hrs and our date with Dupont's Lark.  Immediately we opened the car doors we heard them calling.  We had distant views but they were almost impossible to locate, I think they have burrows. An amazing experience listening to this very rare bird.  After breakfast we headed for the Pyrenees via Sarinea and Riglos.  Just before Sarinea we flushed a Great Spotted Cuckoo from the roadside and on the road to Huesca a Common Buzzard was sat on a pylon. The least said about my navigating around Huesca the better but before Ayerbe a Roller flew across in front of one of our cars. We paid a visit to Castillo de Loarre a magnificent Spanish castle in outstanding scenery.  We were soon onto Short-toed Treecreeper in the Pine forest and Black Redstart on the castle wall. Continuing on we soon arrived at Riglos and to our delight saw our first Lammergeier of the trip.  Arrived at Siresa at 1800 hrs and after settling into our rooms was soon enjoying a good meal in the restaurant with the obligatory red wine.

Tuesday 20th May

Up to the Boca de lo Infierno for 0700 hrs to see Wallcreeper, but unfortunately the weather conditions were against us; strong northerly winds made viewing almost impossible. Met up with Geoff & Rachel who had travelled down through France in their camper van.  After breakfast decided to try the Garbardito.  Starting at 3000 ft and climbing to 5000 ft, the weather conditions were perfect.  Following a well-defined path we soon had views of Crested Tit and once above 4000ft started seeing Alpine Chough as well as Red-billed Chough. On the opposite side of the valley three Lammergeier could be seen circling and later an immature all dark bird flew overhead.  On the walk back Black Woodpecker was heard and eventually seen well and Rock Bunting was added. Back at the car park Citril Finches were seen feeding under the pine trees.  A walk through the pinewoods produced Crossbill, Firecrest and Goldcrest.  Later a trip up the Hecho valley found Black-bellied Dipper and Sparrowhawk then back for a lazy evening and dinner.  At the meal a further two Sparrowporks emerged, a first for Siresa.

Wednesday 21st May

Up at 0630 hrs for Wallcreeper but once again no success. A separate party walking a different route came across the ubiquitous Bullflinch on a narrow track.  After breakfast we headed for Hecho, Anso and Zuriza but misfortune overtook us temporarily.  However a slight mishap was soon overcome and as a result two new birds were added to the list.  One was seen the other heard. Firstly the irritating Rock Hitit and then the ever inquisitive  Earcreeper. Just goes to show that from adversity can come something of great joy.  Another new addition was Garden Warbler in woods three kilometres south of Zuriza.  Late afternoon was spent on a track between Hecho and Garbardito particularly enjoying Red-backed Shrike.  Back to the hotel for another sumptuous meal, coffee and brandies.

Thursday 22nd May

Another wasted trip to Boca de lo infierno this morning.  Heard later from a tour guide at San Juan de la Pena that Wallcreeper had been seen at Garbardito this week! After breakfast we were off to San Juan de la Pena. First stop on the way up produced Sub-alpine Warbler.  Stopped for lunch by the new monastery and soon saw Great Spotted Woodpecker and heard Song Thrush. A walk through the delightful mixed woodland added Wryneck & Common Treecreeper.  Two Black Woodpecker were also seen in the woodland.  Also many species of wild flowers and butterflies.  Next stop was Astun near the French border.  We soon picked up a Rock Thrush on an electric pylon and with more difficulty, two Water Pipit. As we returned to the cars two magnificent Lammergeier flew low overhead making three we had seen here. Unfortunately time was tight and we did not find Snowfinch.  Back to the hotel for our meal and few more brandies.

Friday 23rd May

Before breakfast we had an enjoyable walk up the track behind the hotel. After breakfast we decided to have another go at Garbardito looking for the few target birds left on our list.  Citril Finches were again in evidence feeding under pine trees near the carpark. We took the main track and were soon to be rewarded with stunning views of Wallcreeper on the second main face.  The weather was sunny & very hot, beautiful conditions.  We lunched in the valley bottom and decided to follow the river upstream.  This was hard going with several spills into water.  The scenery was outstanding with many photo opportunities.  Higher up this glacial valley Alpine Accentor was a great find.  The whole experience was magical and just to cap a wonderful day a pair of Lammergeier appeared near the top.  One gave a fantastic display around the valley right in front of us. After a great walk we returned to the Carpark to find a Grey-headed Woodpecker had been found.  It was all too much. Back to the hotel for our usual excellent meal with coffee & brandies.

Saturday 24th May

Before breakfast we packed our cases ready for our journey to Ordesa and Boletas. Left Siresa at 0830 hrs arriving at Ordesa by 1000 hrs. Soon watching our eleventh Lammergeier sat in a cave on a huge rock face. This gave some a photo opportunity and should be a good record.  The first rain of the holiday forced us into the cafe.  Good tortilla espanol made up for the weather. Incident number four now occurred and were soon looking for Losser Keystrel, another new and difficult bird to locate. The rain cleared and we were soon walking along the river. Bird life was rather sparse so the dramatic scenery compensated.  Left for Loporzano at 1630 hrs stopping at Torla en route.  Lots of new buildings with wonderful character.  One had an exceptional roof. We parted company with Sid & Dot here, as they were to have one night in Ordesa and return via France.  Later arrived at Loporzano by 1815 hrs. Boletas great, good food but brandy better.

Sunday 25th May

Pre-breakfast walk found Stock Dove on the church tower and Melodious Warbler singing down a lane. Quail & Corn Bunting were calling in fields and Golden Oriole could also be heard. After breakfast walked west towards Monte Aragon down a river valley. As we left the village a Rock Sparrow sat up well close by.  Good views of Castillo de Aragon as we descended also Dartford Warbler.  Once at the valley floor we were treated to incredible views of a pair of Bonelli's Eagles our second for the trip.   Bee-eaters circled round and a Blue Rock Thrush could be seen sat on the hillside. After lunch we continued along the valley bottom hoping for an escape route back to the village but the escarpment to our right did not yield.  We had to retrace our steps back to the village in the hot afternoon sun. After a short break we went in search of a cool beer. This was more of a challenge than expected and we ended up at Vadiello watching Vultures.  Eventually bought some beer at a service station and returned to Boletas and the balcony.

Monday 26th May

This morning we went in search of the Eagle Owl site south of Loporzano to prepare for our evening visit. Later we travelled north to Vadiello and its delights.  One new bird here was Rock Dove from the Dam wall. The scenery here was the best I've ever seen in Spain, well worth the visit along with marvelous views of Griffon and Egyptian Vultures. Returned mid afternoon to an area south of the N240 to look for Little Bustard, but without success. Back to Boletas for some sleep.  After dinner went to the Eagle Owl site but failed to locate. Returned to Loporzano and after searching heard a Scops Owl.

Tuesday 27th May

The morning walk around Loporzano produced the normal selection of birds.  After another excellent breakfast we were off to Portalet to search for Snowfinch. We chose a path behind a shop called Venta Sancho which led off in a southwesterly direction past an old mine.  Singing quite distinctly above us was a Skylark an unexpected addition to the list and our 194 specie. Black Redstart and Northern Wheatear soon followed and a Water Pipit appeared close by on a rock.  We moved on past some pools to an area of scree an ideal habit for our target bird.  Then just to order two Snowfinch appeared to the right.  Several other birds flew around giving superb views of this rare bird.  After lunch we moved down to Formigal for a look around the shops and a beer.  Back to Boletas for a rest and dinner, our Pyrenees list complete. Spoke to Josele before dinner and he gave us a Red-necked Nightjar site near Fananas.  After another excellent meal we drove to the village square then took a track north towards a church about 150 metres before a river bridge were we found Red-necked Nightjar.

Wednesday 28th May

After breakfast headed for Alquézar an historic town built by the Moors in 1060.  A monastery holds the highest position in this very scenic location. A large Alpine Swift colony is located in the cliffs at the side of the town. They came so close you could hear their calls.  Several raptors were also about including Honey Buzzard, Griffon Vulture, Egyptian Vulture and Red kite.  Lunch was eaten in the shade by the church. Continued on towards Colungo where beer was partaken along with some large olives.  Returned to Loporzano in search of Black Wheatear near Castillo del Aragon.  As soon as we left the cars Black Wheatear was sighted and we had good views of several. The habit was rocky and very arid almost semi desert.  Returned to Loporzano for our last meal before departure. After dinner decided for one last go at Eagle Owl. As we drove north on a track to the cemetery right in front of us on the road was Red-necked Nightjar. We managed to get within ten metres before it flew. The views were stunning, something I've read about but never seen. A suitable ending to a superb holiday.

Thursday 29th May

Left Boletas at 0615 hrs for our journey back to Barcelona Airport. Arrived at 1015 hrs, Barcelona a nightmare but finally found Record car hire. Flight left nearly an hour late. Safely home at 1530 hrs.

Jim Childs and Dave Moore stayed an additional day at Sant Carles de la Rapita so they could spend some time on the Southern Ebro Delta, which they had missed with starting a day late. Three more species were added here with Moustached Warbler, Bearded Tit and Great Cormorant being found at L'Encanyissada, at the first mirador from Poblenou.

La Tancada, Punta de la Banya and Cap de Tortosa were also visited.

Friday 30th May

Whilst in Barcelona a Parakeet Species was noted, probably a Monk Parakeet.  Jim Childs and Dave Moore returned home via a BMI baby flight to East Midlands.
