Thanks to…

….Wim Heylen, Peter Boesman and Mark Van Beirs for providing us very useful information and sound recordings.

Flights

We booked our international flight tickets directly by Lufthansa. The price was 1127 euro. The flight was from Frankfurt to Buenos Aires, with a stopover in Sao Paulo. Iwan got his international flight with American Airlines. He was flying from Brussels to Buenos Aires, via Washington. The price for the ticket was 1109 euro.

We had four domestic flights (BA to Cordoba; Cordoba to Ushuaia via BA; Ushuaia to Rio Gallegos and El Calafate to Trelew), which we booked via http://www.connections.be/. We paid 605 euro for the four flights together. The domestic flights had very often a delay. On our flight from Cordoba to Ushuaia, there was also one backpack missing. We had to wait 2 days to get it back.

Car rental

For transport from Belgium to the airport in Frankfurt, we had a taxi. Service was supp1y by http://www.airportservive-j-l.be/. Price was 210 euro one-way.

When we were reading trip reports, it seemed that hiring a car in Argentina was not always without any problem. Tom spends a lot of time to contact local and international car rental companies, but this paid off well. We hired a car at four places, all with local companies. They were cheaper than the bigger ones like Avis, Hertz, …

Except from Trelew, we got the cars from the moment we arrived at the airport. In Trelew, the office was closed hen we arrived in the evening. We knew this in advance. We got the car next morning. They were waiting for us at the airport while we were at the office in the centre of Trelew. There was a misunderstanding about the place of appointment but finally we got the car without any problem.

In all the cases, the local car rental companies did not have an office at the airport, but they were waiting there for us there.

In some regions, petrol stations are very scarse, especially between San Juán and Gobernador Gregores and Estancia La Angostura and El Chalten. Refuel your petrol tank in the villages because between them, there is not even one.

Money

Since the economy collapsed in 2001 and the devaluation of the Argentinian Peso, travelling in Argentina became cheap.

We took American dollars with us. These are widely accepted in Argentina, also in the stores and restaurants. Changing money was no problem throughout the country. We changed US dollars in 4 places, BA international airport (1US$ = 2.86ARS), El Calafate (1US$ = 3.035ARS), Ushuaia (1 US$ = 3.05ARS) and San Clemente del Tuyu (1US$ = 3.00ARS).

The Euro seems to be widely accepted too.

Books

There is no identification guide available covering the Argentinean avifauna only.

The only book for the region is “Birds of Southern South America and Antarctica” by Martín de la Peña and Maurice Rumboll.

It is published in 1998. In general, drawings are good enough to identify most of the birds but for e.g. the pipits and canasteros, the drawings were not so good. Another minus point is the lack of drawings of nearly 20 bird species. Some of them are mentioned in the guide but there is no drawing of them. Others became species after recent taxonomic decisions and for that reason, there are no drawings in the book.

The second identification guide we used was “Birds of Chile, including the Antarctic Peninsula, the Falkland Islands and South Georgia” by Alvaro Jaramillo, Peter Burke and David Beadle.

Drawings are very good. The illustrators paid a lot of attention on plumage details. Nevertheless, this book is just an addition to the first one. The number of birds in Chile is not as high as in Argentina so there are not so many species covered in the book. Although there is a big overlap between the 2 countries, just a fraction of the birds of Argentina can be found in the Chile-book. Even then, it is worth taking this book with you.

Where to watch Birds in South America” by Nigel Wheatley. We took copies of this book with us but we did not use them very much. When we checked the maps, they still seem to be accurate to find your way. We had enough with the maps and directions in the trip reports we took with us to find our way to the birdwatching places.

For general information about roads, hotels, cities and villages, we used the “Lonely Planet Argentina”.

Sounds

We used the CDs:
“Birds of Bolivia 2.0” by Sjoerd Mayer
“Voices of New World Parrots” by Bret Whitney
“Voices of Chilean Birds” by Guillermo Egli
“Voices of New World Nightjars” by John Hardy
“Voices of the Woodcreepers” by John Hardy
“Voices of New World Rails” by John Hardy
“Songs of Argentine Birds” by Roberto Straneck

We found also a few sound recordings on the following websites:

http://www.xeno-canto.org/

http://www.avespampa.com.ar/lista_general_de_aves.htm

or to http://www.hbw.com/ibc/phtml/votacio.phtml?idVideo=4658&Rallus_antarcticus.

We also got some recordings made by Peter Boesman.

Guides

Argentina seems to be a country that birdwatchers are not visiting on one’s own. When reading trip reports on the internet, it seems that most birdwatchers take a local guide to travel through the country. Taking a guide with you will surely produce more species, but it is an expensive option, too expensive for us. We decided to contact local guides only for places like Cordoba and Entre Rios.

Doing the rest of the trip without a guide was not a problem at all. We managed to see nearly all the target birds. Even for the species we dipped, we were at the right places so I am not sure at all that we would have seen them if we had a guide with us. The main problem we had was that we could not find the entrance of Campos del Tuyu. At the place we had to see Hudson’s Canastero and American Painted Snipe, so we dipped both species.

We searched for local guides on http://www.birdingpal.com/.

Our first guide was Guillermo Sferco. He is living just near Cordoba. He was waiting for us at the airport on our first evening in Argentina. He guided us in and around Salinas Grande, Chancani NP and Pampas de Achala. In addition, Guillermo’s friend/colleague Walther was with us for the 3 days. They are university teachers, teaching bird’s behaviour and ecology. Guillermo’s brother Claudio was their driver for the trip. He is driving a large 4-wheel drive. He is not that much interested in birds, but he was surely enjoying the trip. We hired a second car for ourselves. Guillermo’s fee for the guiding was 100 US$/day for the group. His knowledge of the birds and their sounds was very good. He did a great job but despite of that, we dipped a few of the good birds in Cordoba like Salinas Monjita, Black-bodied Woodpecker and Chaco Owl.

You can contact him at guillermo_sferco[replace by at]yahoo.com.ar. When I checked the birdingpal-website at the end of February 2007, his name was no longer on the list.

Our second guide was Alec Earnshaw. He guided us in Otamendi and the Entre Rios Province. Here we visited the region near Perdices and Ceibas. Alec is a teacher and in January, there is summer holiday in Argentina, so he had time to guide us. You can contact Alec at aearnshaw[replace by at]sinectis.com.ar. Alec has also his one website (http://www.fotosaves.com.ar/) with excellent photographs of Argentina’s wildlife and especially birds. At our first half day in Perdices, birding did not work out very well. The places Alec knew for Black-and-white Monjita, Saffron-cowled Blackbird and Marsh Seedeater did not produce the birds we wanted to see. But in the end we succeeded in finding all these species. Read further in this report. We drove in 2 cars these 2 days. Iwan, Alec and Peter in Alec’s car, Erwin and Tom in a car that we hired. Alec brought two walkie-talkies with him, so we had permanent contact between the two cars. Having these walkie-talkies was of great value to warn eachther when there were interesting birds along the road.

We much appreciated Alec’ guiding and organisation of the trip. Especially the pick-nick at our second day was great. Alec’s fee for the 2 days was 700 US$ for the group.

Internet sources and trip reports

Of course, known by every birdwatcher is http://www.travellingbirder.com/. Great site to find trip reports on the internet. Trip reports most valuable to prepare our trip were:

Other trip reports that were interesting to read are on the website of

Scientific papers about the distribution of Pampas Meadowlark are on http://www.intacya.org/staff/oryx.pdf and on http://www.sciencedirect.com/. The name of the article is “Bird-habitat relationship for the declining Pampas Meadowlark populations in the southern Pampas grasslands” by Gustavo J. Fernández, Gabriela Posse, Valentina Ferretti and Fabian M. Gabelli. You need to log on to read the full article on the sciencedirect-website. Both articles contain maps of the study area with markings for Pampas Meadowlark.

Road maps

We bought the last two maps at the domestic airport in Buenos Aires.

Itinerary

Visited sites - maps - costs – accommodation

For most of the places birdwatchers are visiting in Argentina, there are already good descriptions in other trip report on the internet. In this chapter, I give a list of the places we visited and additional information on places where this is relevant. I did not spend time repeating information that is already available in reports.

I have drawn some maps that are probably useful to find some of the most wanted birds in Argentina.

Ø     Buenos Aires

·        Costanera Sur

Water levels in Costanera Sur were very low at moment we were there. This had a great impact on the numbers and species of waterbirds. We saw very low numbers and species of ducks. In addition, other species like Pied Water-Tyrant were not in the area.

·        Chancani Nacional Park

To reach this park from the nearest village, Salsacate, you have to drive 80 km on a dirt track. It is worth spending some time birdwatching along this road, especially where the road goes through a mountain range. The national park is a large plain area lower down this mountain range, so you will find some species in the mountains that do not occur in the reserve. The habitat in this reserve is Chaco woodland. There is accommodation in the park. We brought our own tents. Camping is possible near the headquarters.

·        Garibaldi Pass

This pass is along the road to Rio Grande, some 50 km north of Ushuaia. Park the car along the road where the road is going over the highest point. Take the track on the left side of the road. There are no trails going to the alpine meadows on the top, so you need to find your way up to the top through the forest just near the track, which is far from easy!

Birds: Black-faced Ibis, Grey-flanked Cinclodes, Bar-winged Cinclodes, White-crested Elaenia, Dark-faced Ground-Tyrant, Ochre-naped Ground-Tyrant, Austral Thrush, Patagonian Sierra-Finch and Yellow-bridled Finch.

Ø     From Rio Gallegos to Cdte. Luis Piedra Buena

Along route 3, north of Rio Gallegos, there are many pools with a lot of waders and waterfowl. We spend an afternoon birdwatching along this road. There are fences everywhere along this road and there are no sideroads, except for some larger tracks. We stayed along the main road all the time.

Birds: Lesser Rhea, Elegant Crested Tinamou, White-tufted Grebe, Silvery Grebe, Chilean Flamingo, Black-necked Swan, Coscoroba Swan, Upland Goose, Chiloe Wigeon, Speckled Teal, Crested Duck, Yellow-billed Pintail, Cinnamon Teal, Red Shoveler, Cinereous Harrier, American Kestrel, Red-gartered Coot, Two-banded Plover, Magellanic Plover, South American Snipe, Lesser Yellowlegs, White-rumped Sandpiper, Baird's Sandpiper, Pectoral Sandpiper, Wilson's Phalarope, Least Seedsnipe, Brown Skua, Chocolate-vented Tyrant, Austral Negrito, Blue-and-white Swallow and Grey-hooded Sierra-Finch.

·        Large pool for Magellanic Plover

Drive from Rio Gallegos to Cdte. Luis Piedra Buena by route 3. At the height of Coy Aika, you will cross a river. More or less 5 à 6 km north of this river on your left hand side, there is a large pool with muddy shores. Here we found the Magellanic Plover thanks to Umberto Santiago, which we met just before.

·        Plains west of Cdte. Luis Piedra Buena

The area along route 9, 17 and 288, west of Cdte. Luis Piedra Buena, is one of the better places to look for Patagonian Tinamou. We searched along the dirt route 17 and soon we found 2 Patagonian Tinamous. They were crossing the road and we had great views. They were hanging around for a while and we were even able to take a few photographs.

Birds: Patagonian Tinamou, Common Miner, Scale-throated Earthcreeper, Spot-billed Ground-Tyrant and Austral Negrito.

Ø     Puerto San Julián

In the harbour and the bay, just north of the city, it is good birdwatching. When you take a dirt track out of the city to the north, along the beach, you will reach the ruines of a factory. Here we saw Red-legged Cormorant and Commerson Dolphins. The bushes here were good for Lesser Canastero, Grey-bellied Shrike-Tyrant and Grey-hooded Sierra-Finch.

There is a tourist office in the city, along the main boulevard. Here they had information about boattrips in the harbour. They also know about the Red-legged Cormorants and it is possible to go by boat to the breeding colony. This colony is not visible from the main land but when you are lucky, you can see Red-legged Cormorant without taking a boat.

Birds: Great Grebe, Antarctic Giant Petrel, Imperial Shag, Red-legged Cormorant, Coscoroba Swan, Upland Goose, Blackish Oystercatcher, Whimbrel, Brown Skua, South American Tern, Scale-throated Earthcreeper, Lesser Canastero, Grey-bellied Shrike-Tyrant and Grey-hooded Sierra-Finch.

·        Perito Moreno Glaciar

Entrance fee: 30 pesos/pp, to pay each time you drive into the park again.

Camping near the viewpoint is no longer possible. The only camping area that is still available is near Lago Rocca. This is still in the National Park but it is more than 50 km from the Martial Glacier viewpoint. Second minus point, you need to pay the entrance fee each day you are going to the viewpoint, as you have to pass the checkpoints again from and to the camping near Lago Rocca.

Ø     Trelew

·        Punta Tombo and the road to Punta Tombo

We did not take the main road from Trelew to Punta Tombo. We took the dirt road from Rawson to Punta Tombo. Rawson is a small village east of Trelew. Not that far out of Rawson, we found White-throated Cacholote and Rusty-backed Monjita. To go back from Punta Tombo we took the main road.

There are many bushes around the drinking place. There was a fence and a gate but we climbed over it. We got good views of 5 Cardinals. When we were on the grassland, a cowboy arrived. It was no problem for him that we were on the land. Neverthless, he advised us to ask for permission next time in the tankstation at road 3, near the crossroad to San Antonio Oeste.

Daily log

December 25th

At Christmas day, Tom, Erwin and I left for Argentina. Iwan left already yesterday. He was flying with American Airlines via Washington.

After Christmas celebrations, Tom picked us up at 16.00h. We drove to Houthalen, Belgium, where a taxi was waiting to drive us to Frankfurt, Germany. At 19.30h, we were at the airport in Frankfurt. Our flight to Buenos Aires left at 22.45h.

December 26th

We made a stopover in Sao Paulo early morning and at 10.00h, we arrived in Buenos Aires. We had a good flight and after checking out, it was time to go for our first birds in Argentina. We had a few hours before our domestic flight to Cordoba was leaving. We took a taxi to Costanera Sur. It was midday when we arrived here. It was very hot and most of the birds were already having siesta. We arranged with the gardeners that we could leave our luggage in their office. We spend a few hours walking in the park. The water level in the ponds was very low and they were nearly dried out. This had a great impact on the amount of especially, waterbirds. But it was still good birdwatching. Especially for Iwan as it were his first hour’s birdwatching in South America.

At 16.00h, it was time to take a taxi to the national airport. The taxidriver did not take us straight to the airport. He took us to a busstation. Shuttle busses were leaving from here to the airport. When we were leaving the taxi, something went wrong. The taxidriver left before we had time to take out all our stuff of the car. He left with Tom’s telescope still on the back seat. Before we know what happened, it was too late. He was gone and disappeared in the crowded traffic. We wait for more than half an hour at the busstation in the hope that he would return, but without success. We could not wait any longer, otherwise we would have missed our flight. Bad start of the trip, we left already a telescope after a few hours in Argentina.

In the airport, we met Iwan. He arrived in BA yesterday. Today he spends the whole day in the city and in Costanera Sur. He was already getting nervous, as we were later than we had agreed. But we had time enough to get our flight to Cordoba as it had a delay of more than 1.5 hours.

In Cordoba Airport, Guillermo Sferco was waiting for us. He brought his wife, his son and his friend Walter with him. The people of the car rental company were also still waiting for us, despite our delay.

It was already late and we left for Dean Funes, a 130 km long drive to the north. Along the way, we stopped to pick up Guillermo’s brother, Claudio. Near Dean Funes, we said goodbye to Guillermo’s wife and son. They were visiting her sister in a village nearby. It was already 1.00h when we arrived in Dean Funes. Guillermo arranged accommodation on the local camping area. We slept in a dormitory.

December 27th

At 4.30h, it was already time to get up. We drove to Salinas Grande, the large salt lake north of Dean Funes. It is 80 km north of Dean Funes. We went to a place a few kilometres north of San José de las Salinas. We parked the car at a track near the lake. Bird activity was very high in the morning. Many species were singing and we managed to see a lot of them. We started to search for our main target, the Salinas Monjita. We walked along the border of the lake. Here, in the low vegetation, Guillermo saw already Salinas Monjita several times. We walked a few kilometres, parallel of the main road. It was getting hotter and hotter and on the white salt soil, temperature was raising very fast. Temperature was soon above 40°C.At 11.00h, we were overheated and we decided to stop our search for the Monjita. We got back to the car and drove back in the direction of San José. We made a few extra stops along the tracks heading to the lake. Once again, we found no Salinas Monjita. At noon, temperature was getting too high and we left Salinas Grande. We seeked out to the shadow of the trees at a camping in Villa Quilino, just near San José. Near and at the camping, we searched for birds in the bushes and trees. Here we spent a few hours and we had time to take a break to recover from our jet lag. Early afternoon, we left for Chancani National Park. Along the way, we stopped at a small river near Cruz del Eje. It was just near a barrage but I did not notice the exact spot. It was good birdwatching here. We spent an hour and a half at the place. Then it was time to drive further on. Today, our goal was to drive to the last village before Chancani NP, Salsacate. When we arrived there, we searched a place to sleep. We soon found a very small kind of hotel. We went shopping and soon Guillermo, Walter and Claudio prepared a delicious barbecue. After this very hot and exhausting day, I got a very strong headache and went to bed very soon. I felt so bad that I just ate a little bit of the nice meal. The sleeping room was full of mosquitos, so we did not sleep very well.

December 28th

At 6.30h, we left the small village and took the track to Chancani NP. The first kilometres, we drove on a paved road but soon we were on a dusty track. It was still +/- 80 kilometres from the village to the headquarters of the park. It was good birding along the track. After a while, it goes uphill into the small mountain range. Also at the higher elevations of the mountains, birdwatching was very good. When you arrive at the other side of the mountain range, there is a large plain, savannah-like area at the bottom of the mountains. This is Chancani NP. From the mountains, we had a very impressive sight. The road is going steep down to the entrance road of the park. It was already 10.00h when we arrived there. We met the parkrangers and then we were ready to walk along one of the trails near the HQ. Guillermo and Walter knew the park very well as they studied and surveyed the birds of Chancani. Temperature was already very high and bird activity was very low. We took advantage of the hot weather to pitch up our tents and to take a few hours of siesta. Late afternoon we started birdwatching again. We made a tour on the trails again. Also in the evening, we kept on searching for owls and other nightbirds. Tropical Screech-Owl was the only one we got. We did not see Chaco Owl, despite the fact the Guillermo knew 2 good places. He saw Chaco Owl on these places a few weeks ago. It was already near midnight when we went to sleep. Guillermo decided to keep on searching.

December 29th

At 2.00h, Guillermo woke us up. He found a Scissor-tailed Nightjar. This was only a new species for Iwan. I decided to look for the bird too. Erwin and Tom did not go with us. When we arrived at the spot, the nightjar was already gone. We searched for more then half an hour, but without any result. I went back to the tent, Iwan and Guillermo searched for birds the rest of the night. Finally, Iwan found one. So stay awake the whole night paid off well for him. However, a Chaco Owl did not appear.

At first light, we were on the trails again. Target bird for our last hours in Chancani was the Black-legged Seriema. A couple of these birds are frequently fouraging along the trails and on the open area just near the headquarters. Today, it was very busy near the HQ. There was a fire in the mountains in the distance and the firefighters took the tower near the HQ as a watchtower. Finally, we found a pair of the seriemas.

At 10.00h, it was time to go. We had to drive more then 150 km to the next place, Pampas de Anchala. We drove back to the village where we started yesterday. Along the way, we passed the fire in the mountains. The firefighters were waiting for a fire-fighting airplane.  We did not stop many times along the way because we wanted to be in the next park as soon as possible.

From the village, it was another 2 hours drive to Pampas de Anchala. At this plateau, there is the Park Nacional Quebrada Del Condorito. This park exists of meadows and rocks. When we were driving up the plateau, we saw a car that just crashed on the rocks near the road. We were the first who arrived at the accident. The car was total loss and the driver was sitting next to his car. He was enormously lucky. He was injured and in shock, but it was a miracle that he could leave the car on his own. Guillermo, Walter and Claudio took care of him. We stayed there until an ambulance arrived. When we were waiting here, we saw our only Plain-colored Seedeaters for the trip.

The accident was just a few kilometres from the entrance of Quebrada Del Condorito, so we were soon there. We did not stopped here but drove further to a café a few kilometres further. The café is downhill for the entrance, in the direction of Cordoba. We parked the car near the café and asked the owner to bring us to the entrance. We left the car near the café because there are too many carthefts at the entrance. Also near the café, it was good birdwatching as we saw White-winged Cinclodes only here. We stayed in the park from 14.00h until 18.00h. This was time enough to see nearly all of our target species. From here, we drove back to Cordoba. We stayed in Guillermo’s house for the night. We said goodbye to Walter and Claudio. We slept in the livingroom on the floor.

December 30th

In the morning, we had just an hour for birdwatching in Guillermo’s garden and the nearby bushes. We found a Spot-backed Puffbird, a species we failed to see in Chancani. At 7.30h, it was time say goodbye to Guillermo. We had a nice time in the Cordoba area but a few days more would have been very useful to see more of the target species.

Due to bad weather in Buenos Aires, our plane from Cordoba to BA had a long delay. Instead of leaving at 9.10h, we were leaving at 11.40h. Also our flight from BA to Ushuaia had a long delay. We just left BA at 14.30h. After a stop in Trelew, we arrived in Ushuaia at 20.00h. Our bad luck for the day was not over yet. One of our large backpacks was missing. In this backpack were Erwin’s sleeping bag, matras, pullovers and raincoat. The people of the airline company guaranteed us that the backpack would be in Ushuaia within a few days. So we had to skip our plan to camp in Tierra del Fuego NP from the first night. After we arranged the papers of the carhire, we spend an hour birdwatching along the road from the airport to the city. There were birds everywere and we saw nearly 10 new species in this short periode.

It was very busy in Ushuaia. Many people stayed here to celebrate New Year. We had to check a few hostels and smaller hotels before we found one with 2 double rooms available. We stayed in Hotel Los Calafates (120 pesos/double room). This is a small hotel with just a few rooms. They did not serve dinner but you could eat in the living room of the family.

December 31st

Before noon, we went to Tierra del Fuego NP. We were birdwatching at the trail in the forest near Lago Roco. At noon, we drove back to the town. In the harbour, we bought a ticket for a boat trip on the Beagle Channel. There are a few companies giving services for eco-tourism on the Beagle Channel. We booked at Tolkeyen (150 pesos/person). We took the long journey of 6 hours. There are also shorter journeys but these boats are not going to the island with the Gentoo Penguins. After we bought the tickets, we still had some time to do birdwatching in the harbour as the boat was just leaving at 14.30h. The boattrip was fantastic. We saw our first species of Penguin ever, a Magellanic Penguin. Thousands of them would follow during the trip. Also the sea lions were great. There were not so many birds in the Channel. We saw a few Black-browed Albatrosses and Magellanic Diving-Petrels. It was near 21 o’clock when we were back in the harbour. We ended the day with some birdwatching in the harbour and at the rubbish dump near Ushuaia. It was Newyear’s evening and the owners of the hotel had their family on visit. They treated us a glass of champagne and a piece of cake. So also, we had a little Newyear’s party. Two thousand and seven was just 20 minutes old and we were already in bed. Tomorrow would be a long birdwatching day again.

January 1st

Today, we drove the 200 km to Rio Grande. We left Ushuaia very early in the morning. It was raining and a strong wind was blowing. We did not stop very often along the road because we had a long journey. We only stopped for a few minutes on the Garribaldi Pass. The wind was even blowing harder here and it was very unpleasant to go out of the car. Once we were over the pass, the weather was better. North of the pass, the sun was shining and it was ideal weather for birdwatching. Near Rio Grande, we searched for waders on the many pools. The furthest point we drove was the bridge over Rio Chico. This is +/- 20 km north of the city. It seems to be a good place for Ruddy-headed Geese but we failed to find one between the thousand Upland Geese. In the afternoon, we searched for birds along the road to the airport. Near here, there is a larger pool. In the meadows near the lake, we searched for Austral Canastero. Soon an angry farmer arrived. He was not glad that we were on his land. He tought we were cattle thiefs. After we explaned what we were doing here, it was ok for him. But he told us that we were lucky guys as we did not meet his guard as he first shoots and talks afterwards.  We searched here until 21.00h. We saw many birds today. Especially for waders, the surroundings of Rio Grande are great. We saw many species today. But we failed to find our two targetbirds for today, Ruddy-headed Goose and Austral Canastero. However, we saw both of them later in Cabo Virgeness.

It took a while before we found something to eat in Rio Grande. All the restaurants and supermarkets were closed on the New Years day. Finally, we found a local market where they made giant Argentinian sandwiches with bacon, eggs, salads and so on.

After this giant meal, we had to do the long drive back to Ushuaia. It was already after midnight when we arrived back in the hotel.

January 2nd

Our lost backpack was back. They brought it from the airport to the hotel. Erwin got his warm clothes back and his camping equipment so this should be our last night in the hotel.

In the morning, we went to Martial Glacier. We stayed here until 15.00h. Then we went back to the hotel to check out. We drove to Tierra del Fuego NP. After a few hours of birdwatching near Lago Roco, we went to the small camping in the park. After putting up our tents, we drove back to the town to go to a restaurant.

January 3rd

We slept until 8.00h and then we drove to the Garibaldi Pass. When we arrived here, the weather was not so good. We climbed up to the alpine meadows to search for White-bellied Seedsnipe. The wind was very hard and we had to endure a few intense showers. Tom was giving up very soon and he went back down. Iwan, Erwin and I stayed on the flanks of the pass. Just after Tom went down, the clouds disappeared and the sun was shining for the rest of the day. We kept on searching for the seedsnipe until 17.45h. The whole day we climb up and down the alpine meadows. We found many droppings of the seedsnipes in the grass, out of the wind. Only Erwin saw most probably a White-bellied Seedsnipe flying over the ridge, but the time he saw the bird was to short to be sure for 100%. This was the only glimpse we saw.

Tom, who looked for birds along the road lower down the pass, did also not see birds of great interest. When we arrived in Ushuaia, we spend an hour birdwatching in the harbour. On the camping, we had an unpleasant night with heavy rain and very hard wind, but our tents survived these forces of nature.

January 4th

It was cold and still raining in the morning. On the higher mountaintops, there was even a new thin cover of snow. At 9.50h, we had our flight to Rio Gallegos.

At 11.00h, we arrived in Rio Gallegos. As soon as we left the airport, we went to the supermarket to get our food supplies for the next days. Then we drove along road 1 to Cabo Virgenes. As soon as we were on the road to the cape, we slowed down and took our time for birdwatching along the road. We stopped at the place described by Roger Ahlman for Canary-winged Finch. The fields where they saw the birds were ploughed now. We walked around here for a few hours but with no success for the finches. We saw a few Rufous-chested Dotterel here. We stopped also at Estancia Condor. We soon found Ruddy-headed Geese, on the meadows just in front of the estancia, near the entrance gate. In the evening, we arrived at Cabo Virgenes. We drove to the penguin colony and walked around for a while. Then we drove to the lighthouse for seawatch. We sat at the highest point of the cape, but soon one of the military gardeners asked us to leave. We continued seawatching at the foot of the cape. Also from here, many seabirds were seen. The only minus point was the hard blowing wind. This strong wind made it also difficult to find a good camping place out of the wind. The only good place to put a tent was at the small camping area near the junction to the lighthouse but also here the wind was blowing hard. We had no other way then put the tents here. We used the car as a windshelter. In the evening, we searched for the local Magellanic Horned Owl but we found an unexpected Band-winged Nightjar.

January 5th

It was an unpleasant night with our tents sweeping hard in the wind. At first light, we were walking in the dunes near the camping and parallel with the coast. Despite the hard wind, we soon found an Austral Canastero. This species is quite numerous here and we found at least 10 birds. Some of them were very easy to see. A Scale-throated Earthcreeper was also fouraging in the dunes. After observing the canastero, we packed up our tents and we took the road back to Rio Gallegos. It was not the intention to drive straight to the city.  We planned to search for Canary-winged Finch until we found one. We started searching in the pampas between the cape and El Condor. Here, there did not seem to be many good habitats. There are too many areas with high grass. We searched for a few hours but without success. Then, we drove back to the direction of Estancia Condor. The 4 Ruddy-headed Geese were still sitting on the meadow at the gate. We drove to an area near the red-and-white antenne. Here the habitat looks better. More open with low vegetation. We walked kilometres and kilometres over the plain but with no success in the beginning. The others went already back to the car as I saw good vegetation a few hundred metres further on. Finally, there was a female Canary-winged Finch overthere. It was very shy and before I had the chance to warn the others, it was already gone. When they arrived with the car, we drove slowly along the track and we found the bird again. Soon, we found a male also.

After we saw the finches very well, we drove to Rio Gallegos. We went to the supermarket and then we drove to the north along road 3 to Puerto San Julián. There are many small and bigger pools with plenty of waterfowl along the road. We took our time to stop along the road to check the birds at all of the pools. We were at one of the pools a 4wheel drive was stopping. It was Santiago Umberti, the very known Argentinian birdwatcher. He was guiding a group of Canadian birdwatchers. He was very surprised to find birdwatchers over here, which were travelling on their own. He gave us very usefull information about Magellanic Plover and Patagonian Tinamou. They just saw a Magellanic Plover a few kilometres more to the north. Therefore, we drove straight to the place. Moreover, indeed, it did not take a long time before we found the plover on the gravel banks near the pool. We observed the bird very well and it was another highlight of the trip.

Santiago told us that the area west of Cdte. Luis Piedra Buena, is the best place to search for Patagonian Tinamou. With his Canadian group, he saw a female with chicks here today. We started to search along road 17 untill sunset. We found no tinamou today but we arrived here late in the evening and time was short to search for it. We would come here back again tomorrow morning. We found a camping in Cdte. Luis Piedra Buena, just near the river, and spend a night here.

January 6th

At first light, we were on route 17 to search for Patagonian Tinamou. It did not take a long time before we found two birds. We had great views of them. Other good birds in this area were Common Miner, Scale-throated Earthcreeper and Spot-billed Ground-Tyrant.

It was just before 10.00h when we drove further to the north, to San Juán. Just out of the city, it is very good for birdwatching along the coast. There are mudflats just along the boulevard. Many waders were fouraging here; seven Blackish Oystercatchers were the best species. A few kilometres more to the north along the coast, you will find the ruines of a factory. Here we saw our only Red-legged Cormorant, a Grey-bellied Shrike-Tyrant and Lesser Canastero. Two Commerson Dolphins were also a highlight. They were just swimming out of the coast.

Today, we still had to do a long drive to Estancia La Angostura, near the Strobel Plateau. At 15.00h, we left San Juán. We took route 25 to Gobernador Gregores. Along the road, we stopped a few times for Lesser Rheas. Driving on the gravelroad does not allow you to drive fast so it took a long time before we arrived in Gobernador Gregores. When you drive through the town and pass a river, you will find signs to Estancia Las Tunas and Estancia La Angostura. I do not know the number of this road. However, this road was so small that maybe, it even has no number. Driving on this road, we first arrived in Estancia Las Tunas. I contacted the owner a few weeks ago. First answer of the owner was that they were no longer in tourist business. I send him an e-mail back and asked him for the second time if it was not possible for him to show us Hooded Grebe.  Now he sended an email to tell that we were welcome and he would show us the Hooded Grebes that were on his land. When we arrived at the estancia, there was only a Spanish-speaking labourer. The owner was not at home and the labourer could not help us. He also did not know when the owner would be at home again. We had to leave without seeing the grebe. We drove further to Estancia La Angostura. This estancia is not that far from Estancia Las Tunas. We arrived here a day earlier then we expected. This was not a problem at all for the owners of the estancia. We put our tents in the garden, near the ones of a group of German tourists. There were also a couple of American birdwatchers. It was already late when we arrived here and they were just starting a barbecue with a sheep on the gridiron. After a delicious meal, we went to the marshes near the entrance gate of the estancia. This is more or less 100 metres walking from the house. This is the habitat of the most famous bird of the estancia, Austral Rail. A few birds responded to our tape playback but we failed to see one in the dense reed vegetation.

January 7th

At sunrise, we were at the marshes at the estancia again. The Austral Rails were responding again very well to the tape. In the reed, there was a passage and after some time, Erwin, Tom and Iwan saw an Austral Rail passing here. I failed to see it. They were still calling but no rail was showing up again. For me, it was OK to try for the rail again in the evening.

Now we went to a lake just near the estancia, opposite the road (route 40). On this lake, two Hooded Grebes were observed a few days ago. However, they were gone now. Nevertheless, there were still some good birds to see. Andean and Lake Duck were the most remarkable ones.

We made an deal with the wife of the owner of Estancia La Angostura to meet her at 11.00h at the estancia. She would guide us to the road up the Strobel Plateau. We arrived at the plateau just after noon. Birdwatching was fantastic here. We had one of our best days of the trip with as absolutely highlight several Hooded Grebes. It took a while and we had to check several pools, but finally we found them. They prefer pools with some kind of short red vegetation. These red plants were just growing on a few pools, and it was only on these pools that we found the grebes. Other good birds we saw were Silvery Grebe, Tawny-throated Dotterel, Two-banded and Magellanic Plover, Gray-breasted Seedsnipe, Chocolate-vented Tyrant, Cinnamon-vented Ground-Tyrant, Cordilleran Canastero, Common and Short-billed Miner, Greater Yellow-Finch. In the evening, we returned to the estancia. We tried again for the rail and now I saw one bird sneaking through the vegetation.

January 8th

Before noon, we walked around the estancia. The owner told us that a pair of Magellanic Horned Owls was frequently present in a small gully. This gully is a few hundreds metres further then the estancia, in the hillside that is passing just behind the estancia. We found no owls during the day. It was a little regrettable that we did not know it on the first day we arrived in the estancia. Then we would have had two evenings to search for the Horned Owls. This would have improved our chances to see them.

At 11.00h, we started the long drive to El Chalten, in Los Glaciares National Park. It was already late afternoon when we arrived in the village. The campings near the centre were full or to busy for us. We camped at camping Bonanza, 12 km out of the village, upstream the river.

We did not have very good information on where to look for birds near El Chalten. So we hoped for the best. On our way to the camping, we saw some small patches of good forest. We decided to go birding here and that was a good choice. Erwin found soon a couple Black-throated Huet-huets. These birds were remarkably tame. They were fouraging in the understory, just in front of us. One was even sitting on my shoulder for a second. They were very curious and when we were rustle with our hand in the dead leafs on the ground, they came to look for what we were doing. They even checked if there was nothing under our hand. Other good birds we found here were Magellanic Woodpecker, Spectacled Ducks, White-browed Ground-Tyrant and Austral Parakeet. We stayed here for just more then an hour and in this short periode, we managed to see many good birds. This was birdwatching at his best and the huet-huets were another highlight of the trip.

January 9th

In the morning, we were awakened by the call of Austral Parakeets. They were fouraging in the trees on the camping.

We went to the same area as yesterday. One of the huet-huets was still present and the pair of Spectacled Ducks. Near a small stream in a gully, we heard a Magellanic Tapaculo. Soon we saw the bird. A Great Shrike-Tyrant was hunting near the cliffs, a family of Chilean Woodpeckers was also there. It started to rain after we were there for a few hours. We stopped birdwatching and drove to El Chalten to go for a pizza in one of the many restaurants. It did not rain for a long time and we were out for birding again. Now we decided to follow the river that flows left of the village, into the mountains. At the beginning, the trail near the river was just a very small path on a ridge. For Tom this was too risky to go there. He decided to go birdwatching downstream the river (before El Chalten). Erwin, Iwan and I took the small patch upstream the river. We followed the path for a few hours. Birds of most interest were a few Andean Condors. Torrent Duck is sometimes on this wild river, but not this time. Late in the evening, we went back to the camping. We planned to have dinner soon and then go for owls. We ordered French fries with steak but it took nearly two hours before our dinner was ready. For Erwin, it was too late to go for owls. He was too tired and went to bed. The wind was also blowing very hard and Erwin thought it made no sense to go for owls in these circumstances. We, the three others had still courage to try for Rufous-legged Owl. We drove to the Chorillo del Solto waterfall. Left of it, there is a small patch of big trees. We were just playing tape for a few seconds and a Rufous-legged Owl was already flying over our heads. He sat down low, in tree just in front of us. The owl was just sitting for half a minute but long enough for us to have good views.

January 10th

In the morning, we left the camping for the last time. We drove to El Calafate. Here we changed money and we went to the supermarket. Then we drove back into Los Glaciares National Park but this time in the section with the famous glaciar, Perito Moreno. As soon as we got out of the car at the parking lot near the Glaciar, 3 Magellanic Woodpeckers were flying over our heads. We did not expect to see these birds so fast. However, it seemed that they did not stop in the trees at the border of the forest, as we did not found them back again.

There are a few good viewpoints for the Perito Moreno, at save distances. Many people are coming here to see this fantastic huge mass of ice and snow. We also spend a few hours near the glaciar. Everybody is waiting here for large pieces of ice that are falling into the water. This gives big tidal waves. We were lucky and saw it a few times.

Our first plan was to sleep at the camping near the viewpoint, but this camping area does no longer exist. The only camping in the park is near Lago Rocca, more than 50 km away from the glaciar. As we planned to stay 2 more days, we had no other option than going to the Lago Rocca camping. On our way to the camping, we passed a small lake with many ducks. To our own surprise, we found a male and two females Black-headed Ducks on this lake. It was much unexpected to find this species so far to the south. On the distribution maps in our books, the area they normally occur is more than 500 km more to the north.

The Lago Rocca camping is situated at the southern bank of Lago Rocca. It was busy at the camping and we only found two free places that were not out of the wind. Only the first night, there was heavy wind, but this did not give any problems at all.

January 11th

There was no reason today to get up very early. Therefore, we woke up at 8.30h. On our drive to Perito Moreno, we stopped many times for birdwatching along the road. This did not produce any new birds, but it still was good birdwatching.

When we arrived at the parking near the viewpoint, we entered the small patch of forest near the former camping area. Soon, we saw a Chilean Hawk very well, as it was sitting for a few minutes on a lower branch. I was already further in the forest at that moment. So I did not see the bird so well, as it was just flying into dense cover when I arrived at the place. A Magellanic Tapaculo was feeding his fledglings. This gave us the opportunity to observe them very well.

In the forest near the junction to the parking, we found a family of Magellanic Woodpeckers. These birds were very tame and stayed around for hours. We could observe them very well and many photographs were taking. Especially the female was very cooperative.

We stayed at the peninsula for the rest of the day. We enjoyed the glaciar and the birds around. Austral Blackbird was also present near the parking.

It was already 18.00h when we drove back in the direction of the camping. We got information from one of the rangers, that Estancia Chorillo Malo, just 12 km before the camping, is a good spot for Magellanic Horned Owl. We arrived near the estancia after sunset. Playback the horned owl did not pay off well. No owl appeared.

January 12th

Our plane to Trelew was just late afternoon so we were not in a hurry at all today. We stayed at the camping before noon. It was drizzling all the time but we could birdwatching all of the time. We observed the more common birds on the camping ground and near the lake but Erwin spent the time by making good photographs of many species. Even a family of Grey Foxes was very photogenic.

At 14.00h, we left for El Calafate. We spend a few hours here for shopping. We searched and finally found a football T-shirt of River Plate for our cousin. At 16.30h, we drove to the airport where we had our flight to Trelew at 19.20h.

As expected, the people of Avis, the car rental company, were not waiting for us at the airport. It was only possible to get a car during office hours, so we had to wait until tomorrow morning.

We took a taxi to the city. We heard it was one of the most busy periods of the year. We needed to check many hotels before we found one with 2 double rooms available. It was one of the better hotels in town, so this was our most expensive night in Argentina.

January 13th

The calm days were over. During this last part of the trip, we still had to visit many places, see many birds and had long distances to drive up to Buenos Aires.

At 8.00h, Tom and Iwan were already at the Avis office in Trelew. However, the car was not there. There was a misunderstanding about the place of appointment. One of the people of Avis was waiting for us at the airport with the car. Of course, this was no problem at all and soon Tom and Iwan were back at the hotel with the car. After shopping, we left for Punta Tombo at 10.00 o’clock. We drove via Rawson. A dirt track is going from this town to Punta Tombo, parallel with the main road (road n° 1). Along this track, we saw among other species Lesser Rhea, Cinerous Harrier, White-throated Cachalote, Tufted Tit-Tyrant, Rusty-backed Monjita and Patagonian Mockingbird. At Punta Tombo, there is the biggest colony of Magellanic Pinguin on the main land. Thousands of birds are breeding there. This large colony is not only attracting penguins but also many tourists. We were not alone at the place. Busses full of people were coming and going. Nevertheless, the birds are used to it, also our main target here, White-headed Steamerduck. We saw one pair of this endemic species.

At 14.00h, we had our time here and we started the drive to Valdez Peninsula. Just west of Trelew, there is a small town, Gaiman. This is a good place to see Burrowing Parrot. We drove to this city and on the northern side of the town, we found two parrots sitting on a wire. From here we drove to the Peninsula.

It was already past 19.00h when we arrived there. In the pampas near the crossroads to Puerto Piramides and Punta Norte, we walked around for one and a half hour. Interesting birds we found here were Darwin’s Nothura, Elegant Crested Tinamou, Plain-mantled Tit-Spinetail, Patagonian Canastero, Grey-belled Shrike-Tyrant and Patagonian Mockingbird.

In the evening, we searched for a place to sleep in Puerto Piramides. The local camping area was the only option but it was very crowded here. We found two places at an open area at the edge of the camping. Minus point was that we were again not sitting in the shelter of trees. This was not the only minus point. People were making a lot of noise during the whole night, so we did not sleep very well.

January 14th

At 5.20h, we woke up. We drove straight to the road to Punta Norte. We spend some time at the same place, at the right side of the road, where we were yesterday evening also. We did not expect it, but it was very calm here. It seemed that the birds were still asleep. We did not lose too much time here and drove further to Punta Norte. This cape is the best place to see Orkas from land, but January is not the best month to see them. March is much better. We stayed at Punta Norte until noon. Good birds we saw were Black-browed Albatross, Manx Shearwater, American Oystercatcher, Mourning Sierra-Finch and Patagonian Yellow-Finch. In addition, the mammals with the colony of Sea Lions and a few Sea Elephants were great to see.

At noon, we drove back to Puerto Piramides. Here we informed in the sealife centre for a pelagic for Southern Wright Whale. Also for this sea mammal, it was not the best time of the year. December is the best month to see this whale in the bays near Valdez Peninsula. Now it was already a few days ago that the last female Southern Wright Whale was observed at the end of the bay. It was hard, but we decided to skip the pelagic as our chances to see whales were very small. We went back to the road to Punta Norte. Now we checked the pampas left of the road. We searched here for the last bird we hoped to see here, Band-tailed Earthcreeper. Despite it was the hottest moment of the day, we found one in small scrub. After spending some time, we all managed to get good views.

Now we drove to the cape at the southeastern side of the peninsula, Punta Delgado. More Sea Eleplants were on the beach here but we did not observe so many bird species. Most notable were Black-browed Albatross, Antarctic Giant Petrel and American Oystercatcher.

We stayed here until 15.30h, and then we drove to San Antonio Oeste. This was a long drive again. Along the road, we saw many Burrowing Parrots. In total, we counted 39 birds. At 20.00h, we arrived in San Antonio Oeste. We spend an hour at the dry lagoon near the road 2 to Lamarque. The lagoon is at the left side of the road, just a few kilometres from the crossroad to San Antonio Oeste. Here we saw Tufted Tit-Tyrant and White-banded Mockingbird. In San Antonio Oeste, all the hotels seemed to be closed. Finally, we found a camping near the big lagoon. We had the last two places available at the camping ground.

January 15th

In the morning, we drove to Las Grutas, the beach resort just near SAO. We did not find the dirt track that goes out of the village into the dunes very easy. This track passes a few small gullies. At the third gully from the town, we parked the car and started to birdwatch in the dunes where the scrub held many birds. We saw Spotted Nothura, Plain-mantled Tit-Spinetail, Stripe-crowned Spinetail, Lesser Canastero, White-tipped Plantcutter, Grey-crowned Tyrannulet, Greater Wagtail-Tyrant, Yellow-billed and Tufted Tit-Tyrant, Black-crowned Monjita and Grey-bellied Shrike-Tyrant. One of the main targets here was Sandy Gallito. These birds were not singing anymore at this time of year. It became a long and difficult search to find one. At least, only Iwan succeeded. At noon, it was to hot, more than 35°C. Bird activity in the dunes totally stopped. We went to the beach for a while. Birdwise American Oystercatcher and Royal Tern were the only species of interest.

At the warmest moment of the day, we drove back to the camping in San Antonio Oeste. A large group of nearly 40 Burrowing Parrots was flying over here. We had siesta until 17.00h. Then we took road 3 in the direction of Viedma. Along this road, there are a few good places for Yellow Cardinal. First, we stopped at km 1110. Nowadays, there is a gate at the place and the gate was closed. There is a waterreservoir and a drinking place for the cattles on this parcel that you can see from the road. Around here, many birds were present. However, the distance was too far to have good views. The heat vibration made it not so easy to identify the birds. We drove further to Laguna del Monte. Here the gate was closed too. In the distance, we saw somebody walking near the house but he did not see us. The gate remained closed voor us. We drove back to km 1110. Now, we jumped over gate. A big group of cattle was very interested in us. Luckily, there was no bull amongst them. The birds were still around. From a closer distance, we could check them all. In a tree near the waterreservoir, we found 5 Yellow Cardinals. We wanted to see them from a shorter distance, but they soon disappeared and they did not come back again. When we went back to the car, a cowboy arrived. We thought that we would get some troubles. Luckily, it was no problem at all for him that we were on the land. However, he advised us to get permission in the tank station at the crossroad to SAO in the future.

It was already late but we decided to drive back to Las Grutas. We wanted to search again for Sandy Gallito. It was already nearly dark when we arrived in the dunes. Too late for the gallito but we hoped to see Band-winged Nightjar. This fellow also did not appear.

January 16th

In the morning, we went back to Las Grutas. We searched for the gallito in the same area as yesterday. Also now, we had no luck to find one. Around noon, it was to hot again. We drove to an even warmer place, the dry lagoon near road 2, the place we went the first evening in SAO. Iwan and Erwin decided to stay in the car because it was to warm. Tom and I jumped over the gate. We soon found Short-eared Owl, Patagonian Canastero and Firewood-gatherer. This last bird made Erwin and Iwan to come out of the car very quickly. We did not stay at the dry lagoon for a long time. Sweat was streaming out of our body and we were happy to be in the air-conditioned car again.

Via Viedma, we drove to Bahia Blanca. Near Villalonga, we went of the main road. Near this small village, there are large agriculture areas. Here, we found many ponds and lagoons with many birds. I did not make any note of the areas we visited here but I think that everywhere you left the main road in this area, it is good to search for birds. A selection of the birds we saw is Spotted Nothura, White-tufted Grebe, White-faced Ibis, 9 species of ducks, White-tailed Kite, Long-winged Harrier, Aplomado Falcon, Plumbeous Rail, Red-fronted Coot, Campo Flicker, Sooty Tyrannulet, Great Pampa-Finch, Grassland Sparrow and Long-tailed Meadowlark.

Along the main road, Burrowing Parrots were present. We counted more than fifty birds.

At 20.00h, we arrived in Bahia Blanca. It was not dark yet, but we were too tired to go birdwatching again. We searched a hotel in the city. For dinner, we went to a restaurant with a buffet for just a few pesos. Tom was very exhausted, he went to bed without eating.

January 17th

In the morning, we took the road n°. 35, that goes out of town in the northwestern direction. In the pampas +/- 50 km from Bahia Blanca, there is a good chance to see Pampas Meadowlark. We took the junction to Chasico. In the meadows just past the town, we soon found a large feeding flock of this threatened Meadowlark just near the road. We counted at least 55 birds. We could compare them with Long-tailed Meadowlarks, which were also around. When you see both species in the book, it looks difficult to identify them, but in the field, it was very easy. We also managed to make some photographs.

Before noon, we were in Bahia Blanca again. We had time over to go birdwatching for an hour or more on the mudflats just south of the city. To reach the mudflats, we had to drive through the local rubbish dump. This was not the most idyllic place of our trip. But on the mudflats behind the dump, we saw some good birds like Olrog’s Gull and Black Skimmers. On the rubbish dump, there was a very tame Aplomado Falcon.

At 11.00h, we left for San Clemente. It was another long drive. We drove to Mar del Plata without spending time for birdwatching. Just north of Mar del Plata, it was already late afternoon, we stopped along the road to check some large pools. These were good for Maguari Stork, White-faced Ibis, Roseate Spoonbill, Southern Screamer, White-cheeked Pintail, Rosy-billed Pochard, White-tailed Kite, American Golden-Plover, Hudsonian Godwit, Freckle-breasted Thornbird and Brown-and-yellow Marshbird. It was already dark when we continued to San Clemente. When we were +/- 80 kilometres from San Clemente, a huge thunderstorm with heavy rains started. It was dangerous to drive on the unlighted flooded streets. We drove very slowly further to San Clemente. It was late when we arrived there. In the streaming rain, we searched a hotel, which we found fast. It was totally out of the question to go to a camping in these circumstances.

January 18th

In the morning, we drove to Punta Rasa. In spite of the heavy rain of yesterday evening, the sky was blue now. To reach Punta Rasa from San Clemente, you need to drive by a sandy road. Even this road was very well driveable. We feared a little for this. In the reserve and on the beach, it was good birdwatching. Many good birds were seen, not at least Hudsonian Godwit, Pomarine Jaeger, Olrog’s Gull, Grey-headed Gull, Royal and White-crowned Tern, Black Skimmer, Bay-capped Wren-Spinetail, Sulphur-bearded Spinetail, Freckle-breasted Thornbird, White-crested Tyrannulet, Warbling Doradito, Grey-breasted Martin, Tawny-headed Swallow and Long-tailed Reed-Finch.

At noon, we drove back to the city. Our plan was to eat something and to change money very quickly. It took more time then we expected. Especially changing money was not so easy. Finally, we succeeded but it took more then an hour. We changed money in a bank but it was not in the official way. One of employees changed our money, but we did not have to show our passport and we did not have to sign papers. This made also that we had the lowest exchange rate during the trip here.

We lost more time then we hoped and it was already afternoon when we left San Clemente. Our plan was to stop at Campo del Tuyu, +/- 10 km west of the city, but we missed the entrance gate. We returned and even then, we could not find it. Target birds here were Hudson’s Canastero and American Painted-Snipe. As we lost already a lot of time today, we decided to search no longer. These 2 species were also on the list of Alec Earnshaw, our guide for the next days, so we expected to see these birds then.

We drove further in the direction of Buenos Aires. Between San Clemente and La Plata, we spend a few hours to search birds in the meadows and on the large pools. Canal n° 2, +/- 20 km from San Clemente, was also a good place. We saw Greater Rhea, Whistling Heron, Wood Stork, Roseate Spoonbill, Snail Kite, Long-winged Harrier, Plumbeous Rail, the 3 species of coot, Hudsonian Godwit, Pectoral Sandpiper, Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Wilson’s Phalarope, Wren-like Rushbird, White-browed Blackbird and Brown-and-yellow Marshbird.

We drove further to Buenos Aires by road 11. In a petrol station, we telephoned to Alec Earnshaw. Alec booked a hotel for us in Buenos Aires and he explained us how to get there.

We still had to drive a long way, so we also skipped Atalaya, a good place for Giant Wood-Rail.

Finally, the drive to Buenos Aires took less time then we expected. Due to Erwin’s driving and ours navigation in BA, we were earlier at the Apart-hotel Bosch Hotel then expected. I contacted Alec again and we made an appointment to meet him at the hotel the next morning. I also asked more information on where we had a chance to see some of the birds on the list he sends to me. His answer scared me. Some of the birds on the, for example Hudson’s Canastero, were only seen once by Alec. For other species, it was a long time ago since he saw them. When I told this to the others, they were also surprised by this unpleasant news. We were very curious about what was going to happen the next 2 days and which birds we were going to see.

January 19th

At 4.00h, Alec was waiting for us at the reception of the hotel. As we were five persons in total, it was necessary to go with two cars. Erwin and Tom drove in our hired car, Iwan and I joined Alec. Alec had walkie-talkies with him. Those were very usefull during the following days.

Otamendi was the first place on our itinerary. We arrived there at first light. We did not enter the park by the headquarters but we drove further to the railway. The road is going over the railway and through the reserve. From the road, it is good birdwatching. Only from time to time, a car is passing here. It was very dry so this produced a cloud of dust each time.

There was no wind at all and haze was hanging over Otamendi. Alec did know the good places for Straight-billed Reedhaunter and other goodies along the road. We started with searching for the Reedhaunter. We played the tape at the first site but no reaction. Also on the second, there was no reaction of a Straight-billed Reedhaunter. At the end, only Tom saw one but the bird disappeared before the others could see it too.

From the road, we saw a flock of Bare-faced Ibisses flying over, White-faced Ibis, Brazilian Teal, Rufous-sided Crake, Giant Wood-Rail, Gilded Sapphire, Wren-like Rushbird, Curve-billed Reedhaunter, Chicli Spinetail, Freckle-breasted Thornbird, Rufous-capped Antshrike, Small-billed Elaenia, White-crested Tyrannulet, Warbling Doradito, Yellow-browed Tyrant, Sayaca and Diademed Tanager, Long-tailed Reed-Finch and Scarlet-headed Blackbird. A roosting Striped Owl was the most unexpected but good find.

At noon, we left Otamendi. We drove to the Entre Rios province. In the afternoon, we planned to go birding in the Perdices area all the time. Via e-mail, Alec told us he knows good places for Black-and-White Monjita, Saffron-cowled Blackbird and Marsh Seedeater near Perdices and Ceibas. We took road 12 and 14.

In Perdices, we took one of the dirt tracks that go east into the fields and grasslands. I did not make notes of where we went exactly all the time today. The first place we stopped was the one for Black-and-white Monjita. A Grey Monjita was the only Monjita we found here. We observed a Red-winged Tinamou here too.

Next were two places for Saffron-cowled Blackbird. It was a long time ago since Alec visited the places. When we arrived there, one was destroyed and also on the other, no Saffron-cowled Blackbird was present. This was a great disappointment. Then Alec told us that he had no longer permission to go to the area where Marsh Seedeater occurs. He saw them a few times on private land and the owners of this estancia did no longer allow birdwatchers to go there.

It was already late afternoon and we did not see one of our target birds yet. We were getting more and more nervous. We did not hire a local guide to have all these problems.

Alec thought he probably knew an alternative. We drove to Estancia Las Cruces. This estancia is next to the estancia where Alec saw Marsh Seedeater in the past. Maybe we had a good chance of seeing the seedeaters here. We were already on the track that goes to entrance gate of the estancia before, as the first place for Saffron-cowled Blackbird was along this track. We stopped again at this place a finally we found some good birds. A few hundreds metres before the gate, we found Bearded Tachuri, Tawny-bellied and Dark-throated Seedeaters. A little bit further from the road, into the fields, we encoutered two Upland Sandpipers.

The gate of Estancia Las Cruces was not close and we entered. Just behind the gate, we soon found two pairs of Black-and-white Monjitas. Finally, we were getting lucky. When we arrived at the farm, Alec asked permission to go birdwatching on the estancia. This was no problem at all for the owner. He even told us that he knows a good place for “the yellow birds” on his land. As it was getting late already, we hurried to the place and we found +/- 20 Saffron-cowled Blackbirds in a cornfield. There was still some time left to search for Marsh Seedeater but we could not find one.

So finally, we ended the day with a good feeling, despite dipping the seedeater.

We drove back to the main road 12 and went to a small hotel in Ceibas, just near where road 12 becomes road 14.

January 20th

Today, we concentrated ourselves on the areas near Ceibas. We left again very early. We took a dirt track on the other side of the road, opposite our hotel. In the dry scrub, Alec knows a roosting place for Little Nightjar and Scissor-tailed Nightjar. We soon found both birds. Also here were Tufted Tit-Spinetail, Sooty-fronted Spinetail, Stripe-crowned Spinetail, Short-billed Canastero, Little Thornbird and White-naped Xenopsaris. A litte bit further along the track, there is a dyke on your right side that goes into a marshy area. Take care that you do not miss the dyke, as fhe beginning is not good visible from the road. From the dyke, you have a good overview of the marshes. It was good birdwatching here. We saw a good selection of waterfowl with most notable Fulvous Whistling-Duck, Ringed Teal, Brazilian Teal and Lake Duck. Other birds we saw were Spot-flanked Gallinule, Red-fronted Coot and Greyish Saltator. After the marshes, we drove around in the area. We visited a few pools and places for Marsh Seedeater. Driving around here for a few hours, we found Wood and Maguari Stork, Roseate Spoonbill, Long-winged Harrier, Savanna Hawk, Plumbeous Rail, Wattled Jacana, American Golden and Collared Plover, Solitary Sandpiper, Nacunda Nighthawk, White Woodpecker, Pale-breasted Spinetail, Narrow-billed Woodcreeper, Suiriri Flycatcher, Yellow-browed Tyrant, Streaked Flycatcher, Black-capped Warbling-Finch, Unicolored and Chestnut-capped Blackbird. Nevertheless, we found no Marsh Seedeater. Alec remembered a place on the other side of road 14, were he saw a probable Marsh Seedeater two years ago. After a break in shadow of a local pub, we drove to the place. Even before we parked the car at the place, Alec heard an unfamiliar song of a seedeater. When I got out of the car, I saw a male Marsh Seedeater sitting in the high grass. It was singing and it was clear it was holding territory. Soon we found a female also. Erwin managed to make some poor photographs of the male. This was the last target bird for us to see in the area, so after we observed the seedeater for a long time, it was time to drive back to the south.

In the evening, we planned to make a walk in Otamendi again. Alec would guide us to the place where he saw a Hudson’s Canastero, his only observation in Otamendi, a few months ago. We parked the car at the headquarters and a local guide joined us. Without a guide of the park, it is not allowed to go on the trails. We walked in the park for 2 hours but we did not find a new bird for the trip. We even did not see very remarkable species.

In the evening at the parking, we said goodbye to Alec. At the end of these two days, we managed to see a good selection of our wanted-to-see birds thanks to the help of Alec. We never thought this after our first half-day in Perdices.

We drove to Zárate, where Alec arranged a hotel for us.

Iwan decided that for this trip, birdwatching was over for him. The other three decided to go to Otamendi again next morning.

January 21st

At first daylight, we were at the road where we had been at our first day in Otamendi. Now we knew the places for Straight-billed Reedhaunter and we would try it again. When we were playing sound, a Straight-billed Reedhaunter was reacting very soon and we managed to get good views. So this last new bird of the trip for my brother and myself, was a very good one. The Striped Owl was still around. He was sitting in the same tree as two days ago.

We drove back to the hotel in Zárate, where Iwan was waiting for us. After dinner, we drove to the airport in Buenos Aires. Our flight was at 15.40h. We said goodbye to Iwan, his flight was a few hours later. When we were back in Belgium, Iwan told us that his flight was cancelled. He had to wait in Buenos Aires another 24 hours.

January 22nd

At 10.30h, we arrived back in Frankfurt. The same taxi-driver that brought us here was waiting for us again. After a few hours, we arrived in Houthalen. We picked up Tom’s car again and half an hour later, we were at home again.
