A Report from birdtours.co.uk

Species List: SE Australia 17 January - 2 February 2002,

Gruff Dodd

The species list below follows the taxonomy in Ridgley & Greenfield (2001).  However, the order they are listed follows Sibley & Monroe for the simple reason that that is how they are ordered on my main database and I couldn't be bothered to re-order them!

For a fuller explanation of the location details see the section on Site Details.  The number in brackets after the scientific name for each entry denotes the plate number of that species in Ridgley & Greenfield.  The letter 'h' denotes that the bird was heard but not seen.

Birds missed

Not much, thanks to all the help I had.  The most notable misses were as follows:

1.   Ground Parrot  (Pezoporus wallicus).  Possible at Barren Grounds, but only if you're lucky.  Dusk seems to be your best chance.  Apparently also possible at Strahan in western Tasmania, but we didn't get that far.

2.   Masked Owl  (Tyto novaehollandiae).  Waterworks Park, Hobart seems to be where most people go, but I didn't get around to trying, unfortunately.

3.   Rufous Bristlebird  (Dasyornis broadbenti)  - Heard but not seen, despite much effort.  There are several parking areas and picnic sites along the Great Ocean Road between Point Addis and Peterborough where these can be seen.  First light would be your best chance

4.   Origma  (Origma solitaria).  Localised endemic, restricted tyo the area around Sydney.  We tried an apparently very reliable site at the Great North Road, just west of Wiseman's Ferry, but dipped.  There are also sites for this bird in Royal National Park and the Blue Mountains, although the picture was very confused during my visit by the recent devastating bush fires.

5.   Chestnut-rumped Heathwren (Chestnut-rumped Hylacola)  (Hylacola pyrrhopygius) - Heard at Mount Pilot, but not seen - this is apparently a good spot for these birds.  Barren Grounds is also supposed to be a good site, but you'd need better weather than I had!

I also dipped a number of drier country and mallee species, such as Gilbert's Whistler, Malleefowl, Diamond Dove, Australian Pratincole.  We just didn't have enough time to visit good mallee areas, e.g. those around Ouyen, while many of the others are nomadic, and occur only sporadically and/or seasonally in the Deniliquin area, which is on the edge of their range.  All the more reason to return ...
