The Azores October 2nd-17th 2003

  • We decided on this trip to try and boost our Western Palearctic lists by seeing the endemic Azores Bullfinch and hopefully finding some American vagrants, plus we were keen to visit this Atlantic outpost of Europe to savour some of the different islands...Steve Lister and Megan Hall report.

Field Guide to the Birds of the Atlantic Islands: Canary Islands, Madeira, Azores, Cape Verde
Tony Clarke: Buy from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk

  • This is the first comprehensive field guide dealing exclusively with the birds of this spetacular region. It covers all resident, migrant and vagrant species found in Macaronesia which comprises the Canary Islands, MAdeira, Azores and Cape Verde.

Collins Bird Guide
Lars Svensson: Buy from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk

  • "Well, it has been much hyped but it is all true. This beats all other European guides by a significant margin. The songs and calls are extremely well notated, even though the pronunciation takes some getting used too. Many pictures for each species. Very information dense. Buy it.

The Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Eastern North America: Buy from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk

  • The Sibley Guide to Birds has quickly become the new standard of excellence in bird identification guides. This Sibley guide covers all the N.American vagrants likely to turn up in the azores...and almost anything could!

Flight Identification of European Seabirds
Anders Blomdahl, et al: Buy from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk

  • This book is set to become the dedicated sea-watchers bible. Flight photography is very difficult, especially for seabirds and yet this volume contains over 650 generally superb shots, each carefully annotated to pick out the key identification features. Just about every seabird that has ever occurred in European waters has been included. (making this book equally valuable to birders on the East coast of America.) The authors are experts in their field and they have included a wealth of new information.

Recommended Travel Books for the Azores:

Landscapes of the Azores (Landscape Countryside Guides)
Andreas Stieglitz: Buy from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk

  • The Azores book is really nice. It's the perfect company for walkers who wish to be surprised by the gentle charm of these wonderful islands. Andreas book helps a lot. You're not alone in the island with this book in your pocket. Every moment you've got by your side the expert and accurate guide.
