One seen on the road at Folha Seca early on the 14th April.

3 in the upper section of Serra da Canastra on 12th April.

Common around Rio de Janeiro.

Brown Booby Sula leucogaster
Seen on the drive from Rio airport to SdT on 1st April, and also occasionally while we were in Rio de Janeiro.

Neotropic Cormorant Phalacrocorax brasilianus
Seen on the drive from Rio airport to SdT on 1st April, and also occasionally while we were in Rio de Janeiro.

Masked Duck Oxyura dominica
One male seen on roadside marshes near the ferry on the road from Passos to São João Batista do Glória on 13th April.

Muscovy Duck Cairina moschata
3 in the lower section of Serra da Canastra on 11th April.

Brazilian Teal Amazonetta brasiliensis
6+ on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April, and 20+ on roadside marshes between Sao Roque de Minas and Sao Paulo on 13th April.

Great White Egret Egretta alba
Seen on the drive from Rio airport to SdT on 1st April, between Rio and Ouro Preto on 7th April, and on roadside marshes between Sao Roque de Minas and Sao Paulo on 13th April.

Snowy Egret Egretta thula
Seen on the drive from Rio airport to SdT on 1st April, also one on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April.

Cocoi Heron Ardea cocoi
One seen on the drive from Rio airport to SdT on 1st April, one seen between Rio and Ouro Preto on 7th April and 2 on roadside marshes between Sao Roque de Minas and Sao Paulo on 13th April.

Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis
Several seen on the way back from Serra dos Orgaos NP on April 3rd. Seen on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April.

Striated Heron Butorides striatus
One seen between Rio and Ouro Preto on 7th April.

Black-crowned Night-Heron Nycticorax nycticorax
Seen on the drive from Rio airport to SdT on 1st April.

Bare-faced Ibis Phimosus infuscatus
2 on roadside marshes between Sao Roque de Minas and Sao Paulo on 13th April

Buff-necked Ibis Theristicus caudatus
About 5 in the lower section of Serra da Canastra on 11th April (and on other dates in that area but not noted), and one seen while traveling between Sao Roque de Minas and Sao Paulo on 13th April.

Black Vulture Coragyps atratus
Common and widespread.

Turkey Vulture Cathartes aura
Not as common as the previous species, but still seen regularly.

King Vulture Sarcoramphus papa
3 in the upper section of Serra da Canastra on 12th April.

Savanna Hawk Buteogallus meridionalis
One seen en route to Serra dos Orgaos on 3rd April, several seen on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April and one seen while travelling between Sao Roque de Minas and Sao Paulo on 13th April.

Roadside Hawk Buteo magnirostris
Fairly common.

White-tailed Hawk Buteo albicaudatus
One at Serra dos Orgaos on 3rd April, 3 seen on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April, and one in the upper section of Serra da Canastra on 12th April.

Southern Crested Caracara Caracara plancusa
Seen on several days during the first week while we were based at SdT, and also in the lower section of Serra da Canastra on 11th April.

Yellow-headed Caracara Milvago chimachima
2 seen on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April, and one near Sao Roque de Minas on 10th April.

Laughing Falcon Herpetotheres cachinnans
One of these exceedingly smart raptors in the lower section of Serra da Canastra on 11th April.

American Kestrel Falco sparverius
One in the lower section of Serra da Canastra on 11th April.

Aplomado Falcon Falco femoralis
2-3 along the High Altitude Trail (Lower Section) on 5th April, one seen on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April, one in the lower section of Serra da Canastra on 11th April.

Dusky-legged Guan Penelope obscura
One on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April, and 5 in a tree by the road up to the upper section of Serra da Canastra on 12th April.

Grey-necked Wood-Rail Aramides cajanea
2 on the river at Chapadao de Canastra on 11th April, and one the following morning.

Slaty-breasted Wood-Rail Aramides saracura
One seen by the roadside near SdT on 5th April, and 3 on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April.

(American) Purple Gallinule Porphyrio martinicus
One on roadside marshes between Sao Roque de Minas and Sao Paulo on 13th April.

Common Moorhen Gallinula chloropus
2 on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April, and several on roadside marshes between Sao Roque de Minas and Sao Paulo on 13th April.

RED-LEGGED SERIEMA Cariama cristata
Our luck seemed to be in with this species, with two seen in a field near the start of the High Altitude Trail (Lower Section) on 5th April, 2-3 near Sao Roque de Minas on 10th April and 2 in the lower section of Serra da Canastra on 11th April.

Wattled Jacana Jacana jacana
15+ on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April, and one on roadside marshes between Sao Roque de Minas and Sao Paulo on 13th April.

Southern Lapwing Vanellus chilensis
Seen fairly regularly during the first week, when we were based at SdT.

Kelp Gull Larus dominicanus
2 near Rio on 7th April.

Picazuro Pigeon Columba picazuro
2 along the High Altitude Trail (Lower Section) on 5th April, also seen on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April.

Regular in small numbers on the SdT bird tables.

One seen on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April, one along the SdT trails on 7th April, and 2 in the lower section of Serra da Canastra on 11th April.

Smooth-billed Ani Crotophaga ani
Seen on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April, in the lower section of Serra da Canastra on 11th April.

Guira Cuckoo Guira guira
Seen fairly regularly during the first week of the trip, when we were based at SdT, and also at Chapadao de Canastra on 10th April.

Superb views of one at its (quite) regular roosting spot at SdT on 4th April and 7th April.

White-collared Swift Streptoprocne zonaris
Several hundred seen between SdT and Rio on 7th April.

Scale-throated Hermit Phaethornis eurynome
2 near the start of the Bamboo Trail on 2nd April.

Planalto Hermit Phaethornis pretrei
One on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April, 2+ at Chapadao de Canastra on 10th April, and one in the lower section of Serra da Canastra on 11th April, and one at Chapadao Canastra on 12th April.

Reddish Hermit Phaethornis rubber
One seen at Folha Seca on 14th April.

SAW-BILLED HERMIT Ramphodon naevius
Regular in small numbers at the SdT feeders, also one along the Theodoro Trail on 4th April, 2 at Folha Seca on 14th April and several at Fazenda Angelim on 15th April. A cracking hummer.

Swallow-tailed Hummingbird Eupetomena macroura
One regularly visited the SdT feeders, although it wasn’t usually there long before getting chased off by the aggressive Somber Hummingbirds. Also one seen at Chapadao de Canastra on 10th April, 2 in the lower section of Serra da Canastra on 11th April, one in the upper section of Serra da Canastra on 12th April and one at Folha Seca on 14th April.

Regular in small numbers at the SdT feeders, also seen along the Theodoro Trail on 4th April and 2 at Folha Seca on 14th April.

Plovercrest Stephanoxis lalandi
One along the High Altitude Trail (Lower Section) on 5th April. 

Festive Coquette Lophornis chalybeus
10-15 at Folha Seca on 14th April. Lovely.

3+ along the High Altitude Trail (Lower Section) on 5th April.

Fork-tailed Woodnymph Thalurania furcata
One at Chapadao de Canastra on 10th April.

Violet-capped Woodnymph Thalurania glaucopis
Small numbers at the SdT feeders, also seen at Serra dos Orgaos on 3rd April, the Theodoro Trail on 4th April and at sites near Ubatuba on 14th/15th April.

White-throated Hummingbird Leucochloris albicollis
3 along the Theodoro Trail on 4th April, and one along the High Altitude Trail (Lower Section) on 5th April.  A very smart hummer.

White-tailed Goldenthroat Polytmus guainumbi
At least one in the lower section of Serra da Canastra on 11th April. A probable seen the day after in the upper section of the park.

Glittering-throated Emerald Amazilia fimbriata
Several at Folha Seca on 14th April.

Sapphire-spangled Emerald Amazilia lacteal
1+ along the High Altitude Trail (Lower Section) on 5th April, 2 at Chapadao de Canastra on 10th April.

SOMBRE HUMMINGBIRD Aphantochroa cirrochloris
The commonest hummer on the SdT feeders, and one at Folha Seca on 14th April.

A female seen in gardens at the start of the Bamboo trail on April 2nd. A pair along the Theodoro Trail on 4th April and one at Folha Seca on 14th April.

One along the High Altitude Trail (Lower Section) on 5th April (RR only).

One male on the Bamboo trail on April 2nd. One at Serra dos Orgaos on 3rd April, one along the Theodoro Trail on 4th April.

Ringed Kingfisher Ceryle torquata
One on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April, and one in the lower section of Serra da Canastra on 11th April.

Amazon Kingfisher Chloroceryle amazona
One on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April, a pair seen regularly on the river just by Chapadao de Canastra from 10th – 13th April and one on roadside marshes between Sao Roque de Minas and Sao Paulo on 13th April.

Rufous-capped Motmot Baryphthengus ruficapillus
One gave excellent views at Serra dos Orgaos on 3rd April.

THREE-TOED JACAMAR Jacamaralcyon tridactyla
3 seen very well on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April. Much better looking in real life!

2 by the river at Chapadao de Canastra on 11th April and 2 near Pereque on 16th April.

BUFF-BELLIED PUFFBIRD Notharchus swainsoni
2 at Fazenda Angelim on 15th April. Excellent.

CRESCENT-CHESTED PUFFBIRD Malacoptila striata
2 in the lower section of Serra da Canastra on 11th April and one at Fazenda Angelim on 15th April. Nice.

Black-necked Aracari Pteroglossus aracari
4 on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April.

SPOT-BILLED TOUCANET Selenidera maculirostris
This superb little toucan was regularly seen at the SdT bird tables, also 2-3 at Serra Dos Orgaos on 3rd April, one male at Fazenda Angelim on 15th April and one near Pereque on 16th April.

Red-breasted Toucan Ramphastos dicolorus
2 in the upper section of Serra da Canastra on 12th April, and 5+ at Fazenda Angelim on 15th April.

Toco Toucan Ramphastos toco
Proved to be quite common in the area of Serra de Canastra.

White-barred Piculet Picumnus cirratus
2 at SdT on 1st April, 2 on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April, one in the lower section of Serra da Canastra on 11th April and one at Fazenda Angelim on 15th April.

One seen from the SdT veranda very early on 2nd April, superb views of one in the grounds of Chapadao de Canastra on 11th April.

RED-EYED THORNBIRD Phacellodomus erythrophthalmus
One gave very good views in response to playback along the High Altitude Trail (Lower Section) on 5th April. A surprisingly good bird.

This smart species was seen on several occasions during the trip – one along the Bamboo Trail on 2nd April, one at Serra dos Orgaos on 3rd April, one on the river by Chapadao de Canastra on 11th April

1-2 at Serra dos Orgaos on 3rd April, 2 along the Theodoro Trail on 4th April, and one seen at Folha Seca on 14th April.

One at Serra dos Orgaos on 3rd April, one seen at Folha Seca on 14th April and one at Fazenda Angelim on 15th April. Smart.

2 along the Bamboo Trail on 2nd April, one along the Theodoro Trail on 4th April.

White-eyed Foliage-gleaner Automolus leucophthalmus
One at Serra dos Orgaos on 3rd April, one along the Theodoro Trail on 4th April, and 2 very vocal birds at Folha Seca on 14th April.  Quite charismatic for a Foliage-gleaner.

Excellent views of one at Serra dos Orgaos on 3rd April, one along the Theodoro Trail on 4th April.

1-2 on the SdT trails on 1st April. One at Pereque on April 16th.

Spot-backed Antshrike Hypoedaleus guttatus
Excellent views of a male at Folha Seca on 14th April.

Variable Antshrike Thamnophilus caerulescens
One female near the start of the Bamboo Trail on 2nd April, a pair near the start of the Theodoro Trail on 4th April, 4 along the High Altitude Trail (Lower Section) on 5th April and one on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April. A male in the Casca D’ante area of Canastra NP.

SPOT-BREASTED ANTVIREO Dysithamnus stictothorax
2 at Fazenda Angelim on 15th April.

Plain Antvireo Dysithamnus mentalis
Rather common on the SdT trails, 2 along the Theodoro Trail on 4th April, 2-3 at Folha Seca on 14th April.

RUFOUS-BACKED ANTVIREO Dysithamnus xanthopterus
A pair along the Bamboo Trail on 2nd April.

STAR-THROATED ANTWREN Myrmotherula gularis
Excellent views of a pair along the Bamboo Trail on 2nd April, and one rather more elusive individual the following day at Serra dos Orgaos.

Rufous-winged Antwren Herpsilochmus rufimarginatus
2-4 at Fazenda Angelim on 15th April.

BLACK-HOODED ANTWREN Formicivora erythronotos
A male and 2 females near Pereque on 16th April. Superb.

FERRUGINOUS ANTBIRD Drymophila ferruginea
Superb views of 2 along the SdT trails on 4th April, one briefly on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April, and up to 10 at Fazenda Angelim on 15th April.

BERTONI'S ANTBIRD Drymophila rubricollis
One gave superb views in response to tape along the Bamboo Trail on 2nd April, one seen the next day at Serra dos Orgaos, and one along the Theodoro Trail on 4th April.

OCHRE-RUMPED ANTBIRD Drymophila ochropyga
2 along the Bamboo Trail on 2nd April, and one the following day at Serra dos Orgaos.

Dusky-tailed Antbird Drymophila malura
A pair gave good views along the High Altitude Trail (Lower Section) on 5th April. 

SCALED ANTBIRD Drymophila squamata
2 along the SdT Trails on 4th April, 2-4 at Folha Seca on 14th April and 3 at Fazenda Angelim on 15th April. A very smart little “antperson”.

White-shouldered Fire-eye Pyriglena leucoptera
One seen along the SdT trails on 4th April and 7th April, and one at Fazenda Angelim on 15th April.

BRAZILIAN ANTTHRUSH Chamaeza ruficauda
One at Serra dos Orgaos on 3rd April.

Rufous Gnateater Conopophaga lineate
One along the Bamboo Trail on 2nd April (RR only), and 2 in the lower section of Serra da Canastra on 11th April.

BLACK-CHEEKED GNATEATER Conopophaga melanops
This excellent species was seen regularly on the SdT trails, and a pair was also seen at Pereque on 16th April.

SLATY BRISTLEFRONT Merulaxis ater
One gave excellent views in response to playback at Folha Seca on 14th April.

MOUSE-COLORED TAPACULO Scytalopus speluncae
One was seen well – eventually – at Serra dos Orgaos on 3rd April.

SWALLOW-TAILED COTINGA Phibalura flavirostris
One of the major targets for the whole trip, this species gave itself up in fine style along the High Altitude Trail (Lower Section) on 5th April.  Distant views of 8 in a treetop were followed by prolonged, close views of a group of 11. Absolutely brilliant.

HOODED BERRYEATER Carpornis cucullatus
One heard along the Bamboo Trail on 2nd April was taped in and gave superb views. Surprisingly, this was the only one seen, although one was heard at Serra dos Orgaos on 3rd April.

Red-ruffed Fruitcrow Pyroderus scutatus
One seen briefly by DL only at Folha Seca on April 14th.

BUFF-THROATED PURPLETUFT Iodopleura pipra
A great view of 1-2 pairs at Fazenda Angelim on 15th April was one of the trip highlights.

HELMETED MANAKIN Antilophia galeata
2 males and 3 females in the lower section of Serra da Canastra on 11th April. An absolutely stunning manakin.

Blue Manakin Chiroxiphia caudate
5 along the Bamboo Trail on 2nd April, ca 5 along the Theodoro Trail on 4th April, one on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April, 2 along the SdT trails on 7th April and 5+ seen at Folha Seca on 14th April and at Fazenda Angelim on 15th April.

PIN-TAILED MANAKIN Ilicura militaris
One male in the lower section of Serra da Canastra on 11th April was something of a surprise. Another stunner.

White-bearded Manakin Manacus manacus
One male seen, and others heard, in the lower section of Serra da Canastra on 11th April.

Grey-hooded Flycatcher Mionectes rufiventris
One along the High Altitude Trail (Lower Section) on 5th April, 2 at Folha Seca on 14th April and 3+ at Fazenda Angelim on 15th April.  A subtly attractive species.

Sepia-capped Flycatcher Leptopogon amaurocephalus
2 at Serra dos Orgaos on 3rd April, one along the Theodoro Trail on 4th April.

Drab-breasted Bamboo-Tyrant Hemitriccus diops
One along the Bamboo Trail on 2nd April was the only one seen.

EYE-RINGED TODY-TYRANT Hemitriccus orbitatus
This understated bird was seen twice – along the SdT trails on 7th April and at Folha Seca on 14th April.

FORK-TAILED TODY-TYRANT Hemitriccus furcatus
One of these rare and localized birds at Fazenda Angelim on 15th April. Excellent.

Ochre-faced Tody-Flycatcher Todirostrum plumbeiceps
2 along the Bamboo Trail on 2nd April, and superb views of one on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April.

2 in the SDT grounds on April 2nd. One in the SdT grounds on 7th April, and 2 in the lower section of Serra da Canastra on 11th April.

One along the High Altitude Trail (Lower Section) on 5th April. 

Rough-legged Tyrannulet Phyllomyias burmeisteri
One seen in the lower reached of Serra dos Orgaos on 3rd April.

One at SdT on 1st April, 2 on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April, several in the upper section of Serra da Canastra on 12th April.

GREY-BACKED TACHURI Polystictus superciliaris
2 in the upper section of Serra da Canastra on 12th April. Excellent.

One in the SdT grounds on 2nd April, and 2 on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April.

White-throated Spadebill Platyrinchus mystaceus
One at Serra dos Orgaos on 3rd April, one along the SdT trails on 7th April, one in the lower section of Serra da Canastra on 11th April and one at Fazenda Angelim on 15th April. A delightful little flycatcher.

Sulphur-rumped Flycatcher Myiobius barbatus
One seen at Folha Seca on 14th April and one near Pereque on 16th April.

4 seen on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April, and one in the lower section of Serra da Canastra on 11th April.

One male along the High Altitude Trail (Lower Section) on 5th April. 

Crested Black-tyrant Knipolegus lophotes
2 in the lower section of Serra da Canastra on 11th April, and ca 10 in the upper section of Serra da Canastra on 12th April.

Masked Water-Tyrant Fluvicola nengeta
Seen in small numbers at various sites. A pair were nesting in a tree next to the swimming pool at SdT and were often to be seen on the lawns.

White-headed Marsh-Tyrant Arundinicola leucocephala
A pair of these endearing little characters on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April, and one on roadside marshes between Sao Roque de Minas and Sao Paulo on 13th April.

COCK-TAILED TYRANT Alectrurus tricolor
3 males and approx 10 females in the upper section of Serra da Canastra on 12th April. The males were not in their full breeding finery, but still a striking bird.

Streamer-tailed Tyrant Gubernetes yetapa
2 seen while traveling back to SdT from Serra dos Orgaos on 3rd April, 5+ seen on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April, and one near São João Batista do Glória on 13th April. A cracker.

Yellow-browed Tyrant Satrapa icterophrys
2 seen on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April. Smart.

Long-tailed Tyrant Colonia colonus
2 at Serra dos Orgaos on 3rd April, one on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April, one in the lower section of Serra da Canastra on 11th April.

3-4 along the High Altitude Trail (Lower Section) on 5th April. A rather smart bird.

A female seen in the garden on April 1st. 5+ along the Bamboo Trail on 2nd April, also noted along the Theodoro Trail on 4th April, on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April and at Folha Seca on 14th April.

A stunning pair seen in the upper section of Serra da Canastra on 12th April.

BRAZILIAN TANAGER Ramphocelus bresilius
A pair regularly visited the SdT bird tables, 4 at Fazenda Angelim on 15th April and several near Pereque on 16th April. Stunning.

Regular in small numbers on the SdT bird tables, also 2 on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April, and seen in the area of Serra da Canastra.

A regular visitor to the SdT bird tables, also one at Fazenda Angelim on 15th April.

Seen on the SdT bird tables, although not frequently.

Green-headed Tanager Tangara seledon
This stunning tanager was a regular presence at the SdT bird tables, and was also seen at Folha Seca on 14th April and at Fazenda Angelim on 15th April.

Reasonably regular at SdT, also seen at Serra dos Orgaos on 3rd April, at Folha Seca on 14th April and at Fazenda Angelim on 15th April.

5+ near the start of the Bamboo Trail on 2nd April, 15-20 at Serra dos Orgaos on 3rd April, 3 along the High Altitude Trail (Lower Section) on 5th April.

4 on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April, and 2 in the lower section of Serra da Canastra on 11th April.

Burnished-buff Tanager Tangara cayana
One male seen at SdT on 1st April, one along the Theodoro Trail on 4th April, several seen on the Jacamar Excursion on 6th April, 10+ in the lower section of Serra da Canastra on 11th April, and recorded in the upper section of Serra da Canastra on 12th April.
