1 at Borba on 21st July and 1 at Iracema Falls on 27th July

Little Chachalacha ( Ortalis motmot)
3 recorded on the jeep trail leading past the swimming pool at Iracema Falls on 27th July

Spix's Guan ( Penelope jacquacu)
One heard and seen briefly on 26th July in forest around the road leading to the tower

Rusty-margined Guan ( Penelope superciliaris)
2 seen on the airport track at Carajas on 7th August and 2 more on the bridge trail at Carajas on 11th August

White-crested Guan ( Penelope pileata)
Not uncommon by the roadside at ANP between 1-5th August with a maximum of 10 on the 5th

Red-throated Piping Guan ( Pipile cujubi)
Less common than the above with 2-3 recorded on most days along the roadside in fruiting trees at ANP between 1-5th August; relatively confiding , allowing excellent views.

Bare-faced Curassow  ( Crax fasciolata)
One bird observed walking along the roadside at dusk coming back towards the mining zone at Carajas on 8th August

Razor-billed Curassow ( Mitu tuberosa)
Two pairs observed walking along the roads in two different locations in the late afternoon at Carajas on 8th and 11th August .

Quite common in swampy reeds on Marchantaria especially easily seen at dusk when they ascend the reeds to vocalise

Observed along the Solimoes on 31st July at Marchantaria in flooded reedy vegetation

One observed on the small stream that runs through the Lajes ecological reserve south of Iracema Falls on 27th July

Common at Marchantaria in suitable habitat

Uncommon with only one recorded along the Solimoes on 31st July

Plumbeous Pigeon ( Columba plumbea)
Common at Borba , recorded by voice each day from 21st to 24th July , and in the forests near Iracema Falls and the INPA tower

Ruddy Pigeon ( Columba subvinacea)
Recorded mainly by voice at both ANP between 1-5th August and at Carajas 7-12th August

Common Ground Dove  ( Columbina passerina)
Quite common in secondary habitats at Borba, Presidente Figureido , Marchantaria and Carajas

Ruddy Ground Dove ( Columbina talpacoti)
3 recorded around Marchantaria on 31st July

Scaled Dove (Columbina squammata)
A few around Brasilia on 13th August

White-tipped Dove ( Leptoptila verreauxi)
Recorded at Igarape Acu on 30th July and at Marchantaria on 31st July

Grey-fronted Dove ( Leptoptila rufaxilla)
Recorded by voice each day at Carajas between 8-11 August and seen once or twice

Ruddy Quail Dove ( Geotrygon montana)
1 bird seen at Carajas on 10th August

Psittacidae


Blue and Yellow Macaw ( Ara ararauna)
5 recorded flying over Ducke reserve on 20th July with 6 seen from the INPA tower on 26th July

Scarlet Macaw ( Ara macao)
6 recorded flying over Marchantaria on 29th July

Red and Green Macaw ( Ara chloroptera )
2 observed at Borba on 22nd July , 2 from the INPA tower on 29th , up to 6 each day at ANP and up to 4 each day at

Carajas between 8-11th August
Red-bellied Macaw ( Ara manilata)

40+ observed at the large area of Mauritia palms at km 82 on the BR 174 north of Manaus with 4 seen around Marchantaria on 31st July

Golden Parakeet ( Guaruba guarouba)
7 birds observed feeding in fruiting trees from the Transamazonian Highway some distance south of the head of the Capelinha trail at ANP on 5th August . These birds are often, and usually, seen from the guard post flying along the Tapajos but none were observed during our time there.

White-eyed Parakeet ( Aratinga leucophthalma)
Up to 30 seen in a large flock around Marchantaria on 29th July and 4 on 31st
Peach-fronted Parakeet (Aratinga aurea)
3-4 behind Brasilia NP on 13th August

[Pearly Parakeet ( Pyrrhura lepida)]
A small flock of Pyrrhura were seen on 7th August from the Aguas Claras road at Carajas which could have been this species although heavy mist did not allow a definitive view. Surprisingly this species , which is commonly seen at Carajas was otherwise unrecorded; perhaps their presence is somewhat seasonal as they appear to be common in February here (A.Whittaker pers.comm)

Painted Parakeet ( Pyrrhura picta)
Commonly observed in flocks of between 5-12 at both ANP and Carajas; under this taxonomic revision the birds recorded here would correspond to P. snethlageae and the nominate race.  See recent entry in Clements' updates.
 
Due to a taxonomic revision the Painted Parakeet Pyrrhura picta is split into following species:

Azuero Parakeet Pyrrhura eisenmanni.
Range: S-central Panama (Azuero Peninsula)
Sinu Parakeet Pyrrhura subandina. Range: NW Colombia (lower Sinú River Valley)
Todd's Parakeet Pyrrhura caeruleiceps. Range: W slope of Eastern Andes of n Colombia and Sierra de Perijá (Colombia/Venezuela border)

P. p. picta. Range: SE Venezuela to the Guianas and n Amazonian Brazil (Amapá)

Red-crowned Parakeet Pyrrhura roseifrons. Range: Disjunct in w Amazonia (w Brazil in Amazonas and n-central Peru s of Río Marañón to Huánuco)
Deville's Parakeet Pyrrhura lucianii. Range: Brazil (w-central Amazonia along Rio Solimões [at Tefe] and Rio Purús)
Hellmayr's Parakeet Pyrrhura amazonum. Range: N-central Brazil (e and se Amazonia in Pará, n Mato Grosso, n Goiás and w Maranhão)
Madeira Parakeet Pyrrhura snethlage. Range: Drainage of Rio Madeira in s Brazil and n Bolivia
Wavy-breasted Parakeet Pyrrhura peruviana. Range: Two disjunct populations, one in se Ecuador and n Peru and another in s-central Peru (Junín).

Observed at Borba , 4 on 22nd July and 10 on the 25th July

Golden-winged Parakeet ( Brotogeris chrysopterus)
Quite common at Borba with 12+ on 25th July and in the forests north of Manaus with 10 seen from INPA tower on 26th July. One was also seen around Marchantaria on 30th July and 3 at ANP on 2nd August

Tui Parakeet ( Brotogeris sanctithomae )
Quite common around Marchantaria and Anavilhanas

Blue-winged Parrotlet ( Forpus xanthopterygius)
1 seen on 25th July at Borba flying over the River Mapia

Caica Parrot ( Pionopsitta caica )
12 seen from the INPA tower on 26th July

Bald Parrot ( Pionopsitta aurantiiocephala )
2 pairs ( or the same pair twice ) were seen flying over the river Mapia near Borba on 22nd July. This is one the few sites where this recently described species ,: ( Gaban-Lima, Renato, Marcos A. Raposo and Elizabeth Höfling. 2002. Description of a New Species of Pionopsitta (Aves: Psittacidae) Endemic to Brazil. The Auk 119 (3): 815-819.) long misidentified as juvenile Vulturine Parrot , has been observed .

Quite common around Marchantaria island with up to 20 on 29th July

Blue-headed Parrot ( Pionus menstruus)
A few observed around Presidente Figureido at Iracema Falls and INPA tower with larger numbers noted at ANP , 20-30 on 3 and 4th August , plus daily records of small flocks at Carajas between 7-12th August

Dusky Parrot ( Pionus fuscus)
At Borba 5 on 21st July and 2 on 22nd with 6 observed at ANP on 5th August

Orange-winged Parrot ( Amazona amazonica)
2 observed at Borba on 22nd July and up to a dozen at ANP where observed daily from 1-5th August

Turquoise-fronted Parrot (Amazona estiva)
2 in flight and briefly perched behind Brasilia NP on 13th August

Festive Parrot ( Amazona festiva )
Common along the Solimoes around Marchantaria with up to 20 on 29th July and at Anavilhanas on the Rio Negro on 30th

Mealy Parrot ( Amazona farinosa )
Heard at Borba on 21st July with 2 seen on 23rd with 8 seen from the INPA tower on 26th

Red-fan Parrot ( Deroptyus acciptrinus)
4 birds seen from the INPA tower on 26th July

Dark-billed Cuckoo ( Coccyzus melacoryphus)
One seen in woodland along the Igarape Acu on the south bank of the Rio Negro on 31st July and another at ANP on 2nd August

Squirrel Cuckoo ( Piaya cayana)
Heard at Borba on 22nd July with 2 seen at Anavilhanas on 30th July and 2 on Marchantaria on 31st. Singles observed at ANP on 1st and 2nd August and up to 2 daily at Carajas between 8-11 August

Little Cuckoo ( Piaya minuta)
A single seen on Marchantaria on 31st July

Black-bellied Cuckoo ( Piaya melanogaster)
Relatively common along forest trails before and across the Rio Mapia at Borba with up to 3 each day from 20-22nd July plus singles from INPA tower on 26th July , and at Iracema Falls on 27th and 29th July

Smooth-billed Ani ( Crotophaga ani)
Common in secondary habitats at Borba, Marchantaria and on the road north of Manaus

Greater Ani ( Crotophaga major )
Very common around Marchantaria and Anavilhanas in swampy edge habitat and at Carajas

Striped Cuckoo ( Tapera neavia)
2 recorded at Marchantaria on 29th July

Several around Brasilia on 13th August

One or 2 on 22nd and 23rd July at Borba being surprisingly the only records

At least 1 in scrub behind Brasilia NP on 13th August

Uncommon at Lajes with 4 on 26th July and a single on 27th July

Versicolored Emerald ( Amazilia versicolor)
One on 20th July at Ducke reserve and another on 26th July at INPA tower

Glittering-throated Emerald ( Amazilia fimbriata)
Singles on 25th July at Borba and 31st July in forest around Marchantaria

Crimson Topaz ( Topaza pella)
A pair recorded in the well known site outside the Lajes reserve on 26th July

Singles on 25th and 26th July at INPA tower and Lajes respectively and also on 2nd August at ANP 8h and 10th August at Carajas

Hoffman's Woodcreeper ( Dendrocolaptes hoffmansi)
One, possibly 2 , seen at a mixed antswarm flock dominated by White-breasted Antbirds and attended by Pale-faced Antbird at Borba on 22nd July . The bird kept at least 3-4m up on medium sized tree trunks throughout.

Pairs seen at Borba on 22nd and 23rd July ; this would seem to be a fairly easy place to see this seldom encountered species; it was seen in mixed flocks mid-canopy on 2 different trails one on either side of the River Mapia ; no vocalisations were heard and they did not respond to playback

2 on both 22nd and 23rd July at Borba with a single at Carajas on 10th August

Harlequin Antbird ( Rhegmatorhina berlepschi)
Despite coming across 2 small antswarms along the Capelinha trail ( dominated by Black-spotted Bare-eyes) none were seen along this trail ; eventually a pair of this stellar species were found in an antswarm along the Urua trail . Very difficult to see well but eventually fantastic views were obtained by all.

White-breasted Antbird ( Rhegmatorhina hoffmansi)
This species was seen both at antswarms and away from them at Borba. A big antswarm was encountered on 22nd July on a trail over the River Mapia where up to 10 individuals of this species dominated the flock .

Pale-faced Antbird ( Skutchia borbae)
This very seldom observed species was first heard singing at the above flock on 22nd July ; on tape playback it kept its distance and skirted us in a circle at around 3-4 m ; eventually it gave excellent views as it kept very low near or on the ground amidst the swarm . This species has a completely different strategy to the above and following species at the swarm keeping very still and picking off insects at a slow pace . Magnificent !...and this must be THE place to see this species as it has been regularly seen at Borba before and since our visit.

This species was found to be quite common at Carajas especially along the bridge trail with up to 4 seen on 9th August , 1 on the 10th and 2 on 11th August . A very inquisitive species it is easily drawn in by tape playback to allow fabulous views ; a gorgeous bird

Chestnut-belted Gnateater ( Conopophaga aurita pallida)
One individual was seen in undergrowth next to the Aguas Claras road ; it responded to trawling and was eventually brought into view where it was well studied. This race , together with snethlageae further west in Brazil , is larger than nominate with much reduced chestnut on the breast and much more black down to lower breast.well depicted in HBW . Will be split in the near-future ( fide A.Whittaker..pers.comm)

Pelzeln's Tody Tyrant ( Hemitriccus inornatus)
1 bird seen well in white sand forest at Km 44 north of Manaus on 20th July with another heard at Lajes on 26th July. The first bird was located by homing in on its easily recognised and far-carrying voice ; according to Luciano Naka it is best NOT to try playback with this species as it just shuts up and then is impossible to find

Buff-cheeked Tody Flycatcher ( Hemitriccus senex)
Several heard along the banks of the River Mapia in Igapo forest between 21st-24th July ; one seen well as it came out in response to playback ; otherwise it stays well hidden inside the riverside vegetation ; its voice a short metallic trill; can be found literally opposite where you take the boat to get across the river .

White-eyed Tody Tyrant ( Hemitriccus zosterops)
1 at Ducke on 20th July ; this and the following species are now generally treated as 2 allopatric species ; in this area zosterops is found North of the Amazon and griseipectus south of it

White-bellied Tody Tyrant ( Hemitriccus griseipectus)
Seen and heard at Carajas by the side of the Aguas Claras road between 8-10th August

Snethlage's Tody Tyrant ( Hemitriccus minor)
1 seen in Anavilhanas on 30th July and another at ANP on 1st August. These two forms are probably best regarded as 2 separate species.the following is verbatim from Andy Whittaker
H. minor is complex types need to be examined to sort it out ; two  vocal types occur south of the Amazon almost sympatric in some areas west of Rio Madeira one in terra firme and the other in varzea/Igarape type forest. North of the Amazon such as Anavilhanas its one voice, however  DNA needs to sort out if this form is truly different.

1 bird taped and seen at Borba inside forest next to the trail on 24th July turned out to be this species based on voice.

1 on 29th July around Marchantaria

Singles on 1st and 4th August at ANP ; 2 on 8th and 1 on 10th August at Carajas
