INTRODUCTION

This report covers the trip made by me and my brother Frans to Brazil in the summer of 2004.

It was our first visit to this huge country and our main goal was to observe a large percentage of the atlantic forest endemics in the area between São Paulo and Rio, to visit Canastra NP to find the Brazilian Merganser and the Pantanal region for the spectacular Hyacinth Macaw.

And in this we succeeded.Although the Hyacinth Macaw is practically garanteed when visiting The Pantanal, to observe these majestic creatures, was one of the highlights of the trip.

We were also lucky enough to find the Merganser on our first day in the lower section of Canastra NP.Fabulous scope views of a preening pair on a rock in the Sao Fransisco River.

And we saw a good selection of atlantic forest endemics , though inevitable we dipped species we were hoping for.We managed to observe 442 species.

Generally our itinerary was fine but in retrospect I would have liked an extra day at both Itatiaia and in the Ubatuba area.During our stay at Itatiaia birding was rather slow from time to time and especially the antbirds were not very vocal. We had nice sunny but also rather cold weather at this place. We encountered few identification problems on this trip with the exception of the flycatchers. We brougth with us an article published in Cotinga (Number 10 – autumn 1998): Field identification of Phylloscartes and Phyllomais tyrannulets in the Atlantic Forest region by Robert P.Clay, Joe Tobias, James Lowen and David Beadle and this proved to be extremely valuable during this trip.

GETTING THERE – FLIGHT

We flew with Varig from Amsterdam via a short stop at Paris to Sao Paulo.
After 10 days we continued from São Paulo to Cuiabà.
Actually we booked a flight from Amsterdam to Cuiabà with a stop in São Paulo. We paid for a return ticket € 1040,- including airport tax.All flights were punctual ( once a 30 minute delay) and trouble free.

GETTING AROUND – CAR

Twice we hired a car from Avis through the internet.
In São Paulo airport we picked up a 4-door Opel Corsa for a 10-day period and this car cost us including all taxes, insurances and with unlimited mileage € 368,-
The car was ok but we could have used a little extra power on uphill roads.
In Cuiabà we hired a 4-door VW Gol for another 8 days for which we paid € 295,-
Unfortunately we damaged our window on the Transpantaneira (hit by a small rock) and so we had to pay an extra € 60,- for this damage when we returned the car.
Most highways and through roads are reasonable to excellent. Some secondary roads are pretty bad. The upper part of the Agulhas Negras Road is terrible.
The first stretch of the Transpantaneira to Pixaim is ok but some of the bridges near Pixaim and especially towards the Jaguar Lodge and further to Porto Jofre are in a terrible state and you have to be very careful when crossing these bridges.I do not recommend to undertake this at night.
When you are out of the big cities , driving is generally easy but beware of overtaking cars on 2-lane roads.
Petrol is rather cheap. We paid between 2.42 BRL to 250 BRL for a litre.
Be sure to fill up your tank at Poconé before entering the Transpantaneira as there are no petrolstations at either Pixaim or Jofre. We did not and were lucky to buy some from the owner of Fazenda Teresa.

VISA

No visa is required for Brazil.

MONEY

The currency used in Brazil is the Real.During our stay it was :
1 € = 3.45 BRL
1BRL = 0,27 €
We changed some traveller cheques at the airport when we arrived but you can easily obtain cash money at ATM machines if you use cards with the wellknown cirrus sign on it.
You find them at large petrol stations and places like Ubatuba, São Roque de Minas and Cuiabà.
Creditcards are widely accepted and can be used at hotels, restaurants and petrol stations.
A creditcard is absolutely essential for hiring a car.

ACCOMODATION

Accomodation in Brazil is both good and cheap.

Some prices:

Hotel Simon , Itatiaia:   € 45,- for a double room including 3 meals a day for 2 persons.
Hotel Chapadão, São Roque de Minas: € 20,- for a double room including breakfast.
Hotel Panamby Airport Hotel, São Paulo:  € 27,- for a double room incl.breakfast.
Fazenda Santa Teresa, Pixaim: € 62,- for a double room including 3 meals and 1 boat trip a day.
Hotel Solar das Aguas Cantantes,Ubatuba;   € 27,- for a double room including breakfast.
Hotel Penhasco, Chapada dos Guimaräes:    € 25,- for a double room including breakfast

FOOD & DRINKS

The food is generally cheap and ok.Keep in  mind that most of the time if you order something of the menu that this is ment for 2 persons. We made the mistake to order
A dish for 2 persons and it was far too much.
Beer is widely available but surprisingly wine is rather scarce.

LANGUAGE

This can be a problem.A basic knowledge of Portuguese comes in very handy and I recommend bringing a small dictionary along to help you out.
As I speak some Spanish and as most people in Brazil do understand Spanish we had little problems getting by on this trip.

WEATHER

Generally the weather during our trip was fine.We did not have any rain.
In Itatiaia it was sunny but rather cold especially early morning.
In the Ubatuba it was warm and sometimes even hot.
In Canastra nice warm and sunny.
In the Pantanal hot and sunny with the exception of the third day when it was windy, rather cold and with overcast weather conditions. A so-called Frio which normally last 2-3 days.
At Chapada dos Guimaräes again warm and sunny.
But I do recommend to bring some warm clothes (fleece) and rain gear with you , to be prepared for various weather conditions.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

We did not have any real health problems during our stay.Only some problems with insect bites.Probably we contracted them in the Ubatuba area. They itched for many weeks after our return to the Netherlands.
As we avoided the big cities of São Paulo and Rio we had no safety problems.

EQUIPMENT

We brought a small Leica telescope with us which was very useful for scoping canopy species and species in the open country side.
We also brought a small cassette player with us with a good microphone and this was very valuable for taping in species. In preparation we used the CD of Aves das montanhas do sudeste do Brasil, Aves do Pantanal and the 3 disks of Songs of the Antbirds.

MAPS

We used the following map:Rodoviario de Brazil, which can be bought at the airport bookshops.

ITATIAIA N.P.

We spent most times on the Maromba and Tres Picos Trail. The Maromba Trail is the short , level trail which runs from the tenniscourt behind the hotel Simon to the main Jeep Trail just below hotel Do Ype. Though it is a short trail it was quite productive. After 100 meters on this Maromba Trail, the Tres Picos Trail branches of to the right.

We also birded around Hotel Simon, Hotel Do Ype ( both had excellent feeders) and the feeders next to the shop halfway up along the main entrance road.

Directions: Drive back from Hotel Simon to the main road (BR116) and turn west towards São Paulo. After 12 km.turn north to Itamonte. After some 25 km.you reach the pass and here you turn right on the Agulhas Negras Road. Some parts of this road are in a very bad condition.Already the first 2-4 km.are very productive. After some 8 km.you reach an open swampy area which is good for Itatiaia Thistletail. On the far side is a nice patch of Araucaria trees which gave us Araucaria Tit-Spinetail in the early morning. We stayed up on the mountain (very basic) in a small “lodge”along the right hand road.( from the swamp)

Apparently there is also a very nice hotel right at the junction at the start of the Agulhas Negras Road.

Continue to a Y-junction and keep left.Go under a straight power line untill you reach a disused quarry on your right.Park your car and start birding along the road further up and along the trail which branches of to the right after a few hunderd meters. This trail goes to a second quarry which is a good area for Fork-tailed Tody-Tyrant, Spotted Bamboo-Wren and Tufted Antshrike.

Some 50 meters after this bridge a track goes right.Follow this trail, cross a small stream and soon you reach a clearing.Good birding around this clearing and along the small trail, leading into the forest at the lefthand side of the clearing.

Salvadori’s Antwren and Rufous-winged Spadebill are frequently observed in this area but we dipped. This site was visited in the afternoon and was not particularly productive. We had excellent views though of 2 Brown Tinamou’s on the track.

ITINERARY

July 24 We left Geldrop at 13.00 pm. We took the train from Eindhoven to Schiphol airport. At 20.00 pm.our flight took of and via Paris we flew to São Paulo.

July 25 We arrived at 5.15 a.m. at Garulhos Airport, São Paulo. After collecting our luggage we picked up our pre-booked rental car (Avis) and at 6.30 we left a rather foggy São Paulo for Itatiaia NP.We drove over an almost deserted highway (called Dutra) towards Itatiaia.During a short road stop we saw our first lifers, Swallow-tailed Hummingbird and Azure-shouldered Tanager.

In Itatiaia we paid a short visit to the small swampy area, just outside town. Here we saw our only Chestnut-capped Blackbirds of the trip.

When we entered Itatiaia NP we first visited the feeders at a shop halfway up the mountain.Within minutes we observed several hummingbird species: The endemic Brazilian Ruby, Violet-capped Woodnymph and  Black Jacobin. Highlight was the observation of a female Frilled Coquette.

At noon we checked in at our pre-booked room of Hotel Simon. The hotel seemed half empty. After the lunch buffet we started to bird around the hotel.

Quickly we added a whole array of new birds to our list, including quite a few Tanager species: Reddish-bellied Parakeet, White-eyed Parakeet, Yellow-fronted Woodpecker, Yellow-legged Thrush, Rufous-bellied Thrush, Pale-breasted Thrush, Red-rumped Cacique, Golden-winged Cacique, Fawn-breasted Tanager, Green-headed Tanager, Gilt-edged Tanager, Diademed Tanager, Sayaca Tanager, Golden-chevroned Tanager, Ruby-crowned Tanager, Black-goggled Tanager, Brown Tanager, Magpie Tanager and Hooded Siskin. We also looked for Black-legged Dacnis which was recently seen at the back of the hotel but we failed to find it.Only a lonely White-throated Hummingbird.

Late afternoon was spent on the Maromba Trail , which is the trail which leads from the back of the tenniscourt to the main jeep trail towards hotel Ype and the waterfall area. And we also birded the beginning of the Tres Picos Trail, which branches of to the right from the Maromba Trail after a few hunderd meters. We observed Dusky-legged Guan, Scaly-throated Hermit, Dusky-throated Hermit, White-tailed Trogon, White-spotted Woodpecker, Olivaceous Woodcreeper, Planalto Woodcreeper, White-shouldered Fire-eye,Greenisch Schiffornis, Black-tailed Flycatcher, Bran-colored Flycatcher,Eared Pygmy-Tyrant, Sepia-capped Flycatcher, Gray-hooded Flycatcher, White-necked Thrush, Gilt-edged Tanager and Brassy-breasted Tanager. After sunset ( 18.00 pm) we spotlighted a pair of very vocal Tawny- Browed Owls at the beginning of the Maromba Trail.Afterwards we took a well deserved shower and after dinner we went to bed early.

July 26 The first hour of daylight was spent at the feeders around Hotel Simon. It was a beautiful sunny, but rather cold morning. Then we birded extensively along the Maromba Trail and the Tres Picos Trail.

New birds included Rufous-tighed Hawk, Scaly-headed Parrot, Saffron Toucanet, Red-breasted Toucan, White-throated Woodcreeper, Chicli Spinetail, some very obliging White-collared Foliage-Gleaners, Buff-fronted Foliage-Gleaner,a Ochre-rumped Antbird skulking in the undergrowth which finally gave good and close views, a not expected pair of Rio the Janeiro Antbirds,a Such’s Antthrush which responded well to the tape, Swallow-tailed Manakin and the endemic Pin-tailed Manakin.

After lunch we walked to Hotel Do Ype, checked their feeders and continued to the waterfall area.At the feeders we added Planalto Hermit and Olive-Green Tanager to our list.Near hotel Do Ype we found Robust Woodpecker, Velvety Black Tyrant and Black-billed Scythebill. The Waterfall Area was rather unproductive so we decided to walk the trails again.

We birded along the Maromba Trail and the beginning of the Tres Picos Trail.Observed Brazilian Trogon, Buff-browed Foliage-Gleaner, Streaked Xenops, Rufous Gnateater, a very showy pair of the sought after Black-capped Piprites, Sirystes near Hotel Simon and White-throated Spadebill. We heard Drab-breasted Bamboo-Tyrant which unfortunately did not respond to the tape.

July 27 Untill noon we continued birding along the Maromba and Tres Picos Trail. The upper part of the latter was rather unproductive so we decended again.Antbird species not very vocal but we managed to identify quite a few flycatcher species.

“New”species were Pileated Parrot, White-barred Piculet, another Black-billed Scythebill, Scalloped Woodcreeper, Bertoni’s Antbird, Yellow-olive Flycatcher,Mottle-cheeked Tyrannulet, Gray Elaenia, Planalto Tyrannulet and Rough-legged Tyrannulet.  After lunch we left Itatiaia and drove to the Agulhas Negras Road.

We spent all afternoon along this road.Along this 8 km.stretch of road we found a different set of birds. We failed to find the Araucaria Tit-Spinetail at the back of the marsh but we easily found the Itatiaia Spinetail.Other species we saw this afternoon were: Barred Forest-Falcon,Slaty-breasted Wood-Rail, Rufous-capped Spinetail,Streaked Xenops, Variable Antshrike, another Greenish Schiffornis, Serro do Mar Tyrannulet, Greenish Tyrannulet, Rufous-crowned Greenlet and especially along the first stretch of the road we found Bay-chested Warbling-Finch, Red-rumped Warbling-Finch and Thick-billed Saltator(1). Late afternoon we decided to take our chances and we drove from the small marsh to a nearby small “lodge” at an altitude over 2000 meters. The road was terrible but the views were breathtaking. At this place people prepared a meal for us and we were given 2 beds in a kind of dormitory. It was a very cold night, below zero and with a cold wind blowing.

July 28 We were up very early and after a quick breakfast we drove back to the swampy area where we quickly taped in a pair of Araucaria Tit-Spinetails in the forest patch behind the  swamp. It was still very cold.Diademed Tanagers were abundant but no sigh of the Black & Gold Cotinga.Slowly we birded our way down the road towards the pass.

Some of the best species seen were: Plovercrest including 1 fine male,Rufous-tailed Antbird, Rufous Gnateater, another Black-capped Piprites, Serro do Mar Tyrant-Manakin, Shear-tailed Gray Tyrant, Blue-billed Black Tyrant, Sooty Tyrannulet, White-rimmed Warbler and Thick-billed Saltator.

At noon we left for the drive to Ubatuba. At 16.00 PM we checked a stake-out for the Black-hooded Antwren near Angra dos Reis but not a sniff. Just a lonely Striped Cuckoo , our first Brazilian Tanagers and Yellow Tyrannulet.

Disappointed we left at 17.00 for the uneventful 2 hour drive to Ubatuba. It took some time before we found the lovely hotel Solar das Aguas Cantantes , recommended by John van der Woude, at the far west side of Ubatuba.A very scenic place where we had a late but tasty dinner.

July 29 At dawn we started birding at the nearby Folha Seca.Excellent birding .

We heard Bare-throated Bellbirds from all sides but it took a while before we obtained satisfying views. We did see only one adult male.Along the main track we taped in a very responsive Slaty Bristleront which gave fabulous and close views.A small second trail led us to a second quarry where we had a soaring  Mantled Hawk as well as twice a Black Hawk-Eagle.In a patch of bamboo we found Spotted Bamboo-Wren but no sign of Fork-tailed Tody-Tyrant.

Excellent views of noisy Scaled Antbirds, Ferruginous Antbird, Tufted Antshrike and the endemic Unicoloured Antwren.Other notable birds included Gray-hooded Attila, Oustalet’s Tyrannulet, São Paulo Tyrannulet and some good Tanager species.

At noon we had a short break for lunch and in the afternoon we visited Corcovado which was a bit disappointing.Best was the observation of 2 Brown Tinamous walking slowly and in full view on the trail

July 30 The whole morning was spent at Fazenda Angelim. Though we had to work hard we found some good birds.Behind the last house on some dead branches we scoped a perched male Buff-throated Purpletuft. At one time we observed no less than 4 birds!!!Other species found at Angelim included Plain Parakeet, Pileated Parrot,Violet-capped Woodnymph, Brazilian Trogon, Blond-crested Woodpecker, Plain Xenops, Rufous-winged Antwren, Scaled Antbird and after some effort good views of Squamate Antbird, Chestnut-crowned Becard, Bare-throated Bellbird,Sulphur-rumped Flycatcher, Large-headed Flatbill, Yellow-lored Tody-Flycatcher, Hangnest Tody-Tyrant, Eared Pygmy-Tyrant,Mottle-cheeked Tyrannulet, Tawny-crowned Pygmy-Tyrant, Gray-capped Tyrannulet, Green Honeycreeper, Blue Dacnis, Violaceous Euphonia, Chestnut-bellied Euphonia, Green-headed Tanager, some beautiful Red-necked Tanagers, Gilt-edged Tanager, Brassy-breasted Tanager, Sayaca Tanager, Palm Tanager, Brazilian Tanager, Ruby-crowned Tanager, Flame-crested Tanager(common), Rufous-headed Tanager and Red-crowned Ant-Tanager  We also visited nearby Fazenda Capricornio for a short period where we found at some feeders Saw-billed Hermit (3),Festive Coquette (3), Glittering-bellied Emerald, Violet-capped Hummingbird, Sombre Hummingbird (1) and Brazilian Ruby.A stroll around this fazenda did not add much but we did see Gray-hooded Attila and identified some White-tighed Swallows. We ended the day again at Fazenda Angelim but the afternoon was not very productive compared with our early morning visit. We failed to find Fork-tailed Bamboo-Tyrant, Bay-ringed Tyrannulet and Salvadori’s Antwren to name a few.

In the evening we discussed the possibilty to spend the early morning hours again at either Folha Seca or Fazenda Angelim before travelling to Canastra the following day.We decided against that option as we thought we would need the whole day to drive to São Roque de Minas. And that turned out to be a good decision.

July 31 A travelling day.We drove from Ubatuba to São Roque de Minas near Canastra NP.We had some problems finding the right road from Piumhi to São Roque de Minas.A bit confusing and hardly any road signs. The last stretch of some 60 km.is a very dusty dirt road.We arrived at dusk (18.00 PM) at São Roque de Minas and took a room in Hotel Chapadão.This hotel is recommended because they are used to birders and have feeders in their garden which have among others Planalto Hermit and especially Stripe-breasted Starthroat.

We met Peter Boesman and his wife and exchanged some info.

August 1 We left very early and started to bird along the Rio São Fransisco in the lower section of the park. From time to time we checked open areas for the Brazilian Merganser. At one point at a very obvious bend of the river with very good views from the main road on the river Frans discovered a pair of preening Brasilian Mergansers right below us on a rock in the river. We watched them for several minutes through the scope and had excellent views.Later we saw them “running”through the rapids where they disappeared behind a bend of the river.THE target species seen on our first day and before 8 am.We also photographed at the same spot some very obliging Red-legged Seriemas. We continued to Casca d’Ante and birded the gallery forest near the waterfall.

Species seen in the lower section included: Blue-winged Parrotlet, Amethyst Woodstar, Brazilian Trogon, Rufous-tailed Jacamar, Campo Flicker, White Woodpecker,White-barred Piculet, Pale-breasted Spinetail, Streaked Xenops, Yellow-bellied Elaenia, Sepia-capped Flycatcher, White-throated Spadebill, Short-crested Flycatcher,Helmeted manakin, Pin-tailed Manakin, White-rumped Swallow, White-rimmed Warbler, the endemic White-striped Warbler, Rufous-headed Tanager,, Black-goggled Tanager, Burnished Buff Tanager, Black-throated Saltator, Wedge-tailed Grassfinch, Grassland Sparrow and Yellow-rumped Marshbird..After a excellent lunch ( made by the people of hotel Chapadão) we drove back.We made an extensive stop at the campsite of Boteco Rá ( No Mergansers) and had a beer at the nearby small restaurant. The marshy area just next to the place gave us some nice Streamer-tailed Tyrants.

The last hour was spent around the feeders of hotel Chapadão.Great views of a male Stripe-breasted Starthroat. Also Planalto Hermit and Swallow-tailed Hummingbirds. We had a nice dinner together with Peter Boesman and his wife and of course we discussed  travelling, birds and birdwatching.

August 2 In the early morning we birded at a small forest-scrub patch a few km. outside São Roque along the road up to the plateau towards the entrance of the national park. It is at a junction with another track on the right and with a sign “Capão Forro”.We quickly found White-eared Puffbird, Rufous-winged Antshrike, Curl-crested Jay and Cinereous Warbling-Finch.

Just before the entrance we had good views of 2 perched Golden-capped Parakeets.Inside the national park we birded the area where powerlines cross the road. This is the stake-out for Brasilian Tapaculo.Though we heard a few we never saw one.We had excellent views of a patrolling Maned Wolf but unfortunately this animal carried a necklace with a transmitter. In the same area we had excellent views of Sharp-tailed Streamcreeper, the endemic Gray-backed Tachuri and Black-masked Finch.

We spent all day up on the plateau. We were able to photograph a Giant Anteater which was cleaning a hill side of ants.Other notable birds seen by us were: Spotted Nothura, Red-winged Tinamou, Greater Rhea (uncommon ), Aplomado Falcon, Red-legged Seriema, Peach-fronted Parakeet, Highland Elaenia, Sharp-tailed Tyrant, Crested Black Tyrant, Cock-tailed Tyrant (1 male), Ochre-breasted Pipit, Cinnamon Tanager, Stripe-tailed Yellow-finch, Wedge-tailed Grass-Finch, Great Pampa-Finch and Grey Pileated Finch.

August 3 Before dawn we arrived again at the Brazilian Tapaculo stake-out but though the bird came very close it did not show itself to us.We had some displaying Ochre-breasted Pipits and added  Tawny-headed Swallow to our list.

We left Canastra at 10.00 am and drove straight to São Paulo where we arrived at the airport just before sunset. We delivered the car at the Avis office and took the shuttle bus to the nearby Panamby Hotel.

August 4 With the shuttle bus to the airport for our morning flight to Cuiaba. We left at 9.00 am and arrived at 11.10 at Cuiaba. An employee of Avis was waiting for us in the arrival hal and drove us to the nearby Avis office. We quickly filled out the necessary forms and at 13.00 we were on our way to the famous Pantanal.A few km.after Poconé we started to bird seriously.Unfortunately we forgot the fill up with petrol at Poconé because we thought petrol was available in Pixaim but this turned out not to be the case.

In the afternoon birding along the Tranpantaneira towards Pixaim gave us the first impression of this paradise of birds.Among the more common waterbirds and raptors we observed Capped Heron, Bare-faced Ibis, Green Ibis , a pair of very obliging Sunbitterns just beside the road and a small band of Greater Rheas.

Around dusk we arrived at Fazenda Tereza near Pixaim and we were warmly welcomed by the staff. Here we met Mark van Beirs and his Birdquest group. It is not the first time that I met him somewhere on the globe while birding. After dinner he gave us some up to date info about the area and we had some beers together.

August 5 A dawn we started to bird around the fazenda. At least 6 Nacunda Nighthawks were observed in the open area in front of the fazenda. We looked in vain for Long-tailed Ground-Dove which is sometimes seen in the area. After a quick breakfast we started to bird in the scrubby forest near the lodge and later we entered the gallery forest along the river. It was a very enjoyable morning and we observed among others Blue & Yellow Macaw, Peach-fronted Parakeet, Monk Parakeet, Chestnut-eared Aracari, Toco Toucan, Green-barred Woodpecker, Pale-crested Woodpecker, Little Woodpecker, Crimson-crested Woodpecker, Great Antshrike, Barred Antshrike, after some searching good views of Mato Grosso Antbird, White-lored Spinetail, Gray-crested Cachalote, Narrow-billed Woodcreeper, S.Beardless Tyrannulet, Mouse-coloured Tyrannulet, Pearly-vented Tody-Tyrant, Common Tody-Flycatcher, Fuscous Flycatcher in the shady undergrowth,Rufous Casiornis, Masked Gnatcatcher, Ashy-headed Greenlet, Hooded Tanager, Chestnut-vented Conebill and Buff-throated saltator. Along the entrance road we observed a nesting Chotoy Spinetail (thanks Mark!)We also visited the area around Pixaim where we tried to lure out Cinereous-breasted Spinetail but we only found Yellow-chinned Spinetail. We did seen however a pair of Rusty-backed Antwrens and had good looks at a small flock of Nanday Parakeets.Further along the Tranpantaneira we observed a few Long-tailed Ground-Doves.

In the late afternoon we made a boat trip on the Pixaim River.During this trip we observed the endemic Chestnut-bellied Guan and one lonely Blue-throated Piping-Guan.Another notable observation was that of a pair of Band-tailed Antbirds in the scrub along the river and a few Boat-billed Herons. On our way back we observed many Band-tailed Nighthawks hunting over the river.

Some spotlighting after dark did not gave us much.

August 6 Well before dawn and with a packed breakfast and lunch we headed along the Transpantaneira towards the Jaguar Lodge where we wanted to be at dawn to observe our main target species the Hyacinth Macaw.

Just before the lodge we had excellent and close views of 2 pairs of Hyacinth Macaws which we were also able to photograph.

Satisfied we continued to the wide trail a few km.past the Jaguar Lodge. We had good views of several Southern Screamers from the main road and we also taped in a pair of Planalto Slaty Antshrikes.

We birded all morning along this trail.Observations included Chestnut-bellied Guan, Bare-faced Curassow, Bat Falcon, Blue-fronted Parrot, Blue-crowned Trogon, Lineated Woodpecker, Plain Antvireo, White-lored Spinetail, excellent views of a Red-billed Scythebill, Buff-breasted Wren and Fawn-breasted Wren which are best separated by voice and Purple-throated Euphonia.

We failed to find Great Rufous Woodcreeper for which this trail is said to be good.

Early afternoon we returned to the Fazenda Santa Teresa and on the way back we saw Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture, Rufous-fronted Thornbird, Greater Thornbird, Rusty-collared Seedeater, Black-backed Water-Tyrant, White-headed Marsh-Tyrant, Solitary Black cacique, Epaulet Oriole, Orange-backed Troupial, Unicoloured Blackbird and Scarlet-headed Blackbird.

Late afternoon we took another boat trip to a stake-out of Giant Otters. When we had nice and close views of a family of Giant Otters suddenly a Tapir came to the river and was observed at a distance of less than 10 meters, standing at the edge of the river.Identified at least one Red-throated Piping-Guan during this trip.

Spotlighting gave us a calling Great Horned Owl and Pauraque but no Spot-tailed Nightjar.

August 7 A very cold and windy morning.A so-called Frio , which normally last a couple of days, had arrived. We decided to bird the scrub and gallery forest again near the lodge and despite the weather conditions we found the area quite birdy.

New species seen by us were Buff-bellied Hermit, Green & Rufous Kingfisher, Blue-crowned Motmot, Black-fronted Nunbird, White-edged Piculet, Large-billed Antwren, Planalto Woodcreeper, White-crested Tyrannulet, Stripe-necked Tody-Tyrant, a skulking Rusty-fronted Tody-Flycatcher which showed itself finally very well, female Helmeted Manakin, Rufous-browed Peppershrike, Flavescent Warbler and Gray-headed Warbler.Best bird was the Great Rufous Woodcreeper which was observed in the gallery forest.

The whole afternoon was spent birding along the Tranpantaneira towards Poconé.We were lucky to observe and identify 3 Golden-collared Macaws in flight.

August 8 We left Fazenda Teresa. It was still pretty cold.We slowly birded our way towards Poconé and further to Cuiaba. On our way out we met David van den Schoor and exchanged experiences and info. From Cuiaba we continued to Chapada dos Guimaräes and we spent the last hours of the day at the Véu de Noiva Waterfall.

It was quite crowded this afternoon (Sunday). We failed to find the Blue-winged Macaw. We drove the short distance to Chapada dos Guimaräes and took a small bungalow in a large and completely deserted complex at the outskirts of town.(100 BRL and less than a km.from the start of the Agua Fria Road. Drove to town for dinner.

August 9 After a pre-dawn breakfast we drove to the beginning of the Agua Fria Road and started to bird. The first stretch was very productive and gave us some good species within an hour.Species seen included Red & Green Macaw, Blue-tufted Starthroat ( a fine male between the females), White-eared Puffbird, Rusty-backed Antwren, the newly described Chapada Flycatcher, Gray Monjita, Wedge-tailed Grassfinch, Plumbeous Seedeater, the beautiful Coal-crested Tit which was surprisingly common in the area as were White-banded and White-rumped Tanagers.

We continued to km.3,5 which is supposed to be a stake-out of Rufous-sided Pygmy-Tyrant but we failed to find the site ( and the bird)

We drove further to a look-out point, Cidade de Pedras which is a magnificent site with astonishing views of the surrounding landscape. When we arrived, it was already scoring hot and we did not see much and certainly not the Yellow-billed Blue Finch which is regularly seen at this point.

In the early afternoon we checked the gallery forest at Portão da Fé, checked out of our hotel and took a room at hotel Penhasco, which has a nice forest just below it.Late afternoon was spent again at the Waterfall of Véu de Noiva. We identified a small flock of Biscutate Swifts and fortunately we had also good views of a pair of perched Blue-winged Macaws.

August 10  The first hour was spent again at the first kilometer of the Agua Fria Road.

Astonishing views of a very obliging Collared Crescentchest. After this we drove to the gallery forest of Portao da Fé and had an excellent morning at this small forest patch. We observed Blue-crowned Trogon, Blue-crowned Motmot, Yellow-ridged Toucan,Black-fronted Nunbird, White-edged Piculet, Yellow-tufted Woodpecker, Red-necked Woodpecker, Planalto Slaty Antshrike, Rufous-winged Antshrike, Large-billed Antwren, Planalto Woodcreeper, Forest Elaenia, Small-billed Elaenia, Tawny-crowned Pygmy-Tyrant, we taped out a Southern Antpipit which gave excellent views, Crested Becard, Chivi Vireo, White-bellied Warbler, Black-faced Tanager, Guira Tanager, White-lined Tanager, Pectoral Sparrow, and Green-winged Saltator.

In the afternoon we birded the forest below Hotel Penhasco.Several Helmeted Manakins were observed. Also twice a Cinnamon-throated Hermit was located and a skulking Saffron-billed Sparrow.

August 11  My birthday and as usual I am not at home but somewhere else on the globe.

We birded all morning the forest below Hotel Penhasco.Nothing new.

At 13.00 we left for Cuiaba. We delivered the car and had to pay for the damaged window of the car.(Hit by a rock in the Pantanal)

Our plane left Cuiaba at 17.00 pm and we arrived at Sao Paulo at 21.00 pm. We had to rush as we had only 1 hour to change flights. We left São Paulo at 22.20 and arrived at Schiphol (Amsterdam) at 17.10 pm on August 12th. From Schiphol we took the train home where we arrived at 20.30 pm.

Our experience

Brazil is a huge country and we have only covered a small area. This country has the birder a lot to offer and we will certainly return in the near future to visit other parts of Brazil.

Our trip went smoothly. The infrastructure, accomodation and food are of a good standard, the weather was fine and the birding great.
