SYSTEMATIC LIST OF MAMMALS for the CAMEROON,

This list follows the sequence and scientific nomenclature of the "The Kingdon Field Guide to African Mammals." by Jonathan Kingdon. Data are estimates of the minimum numbers seen.

The Dutch names follow "Elseviers Gids van de Afrikaanse Zoogdieren" of Haltenorth/Diller/Smeenk.

1.             CHIMPANZEE, Pan troglodytes, Chimpanzee
                Only heard at Mount Kupé NP (Shrike Trail, c1500m).

2.             PREUSS'S RED COLOBUS, Piliocolobus preussi, Preuss' Rode Colubus
                3 at Korup NP.

3.             OLIVE BABOON, Papio anubis, Baviaan
                Small numbers throughout the north.

4.             PATAS MONKEY, Cercopithecus patas, Patas (Huzarenaap)
                15+ at Waza NP.

5.             TANTALUS MONKEY, Cercopithecus tantalus, Tantalus Meerkat
                6 at Benoue NP, a few at Waza NP.

6.             PUTTY-NOSED MONKEY, Cercopithecus nictitans, Zwarte Witneusmeerkat
                Heard at Korup NP and Mount Kupé NP.

7.             CRAWSHAY'S HARE, Lepus crawshayi, Crawshays Haas
                2 at the Ngaoundaba Ranch.

8.             GREEN SQUIRREL, Paraxerus poensis, Groene Eekhoorn
                Several in the forest.

9.             AFRICAN GIANT SQUIRREL, Protoxerus stangeri, Grote Eekhoorn
                2 at Mount Kupé NP.

10.           BRUSH-TAILED PORCUPINE, Atherurus africanus, Afrikaans Kwaststekelvarken
                1 at Benoue NP.

11.           COMMON (GOLDEN) JACKAL, Canis aureus, Goudjakhals
                5 at Waza NP.

12.           SAND FOX, Vulpes pallida, Zandvos
                A single observation at Waza.

13.           ICHNEUMON, Herpestes ichneumon, Egyptische Mangoeste (Ichneumon)
                Small numbers at Waza NP.

14.           SLENDER MONGOOSE, Herpestes sanguinea, Slanke Mangoeste
                1 at Benoue NP.

15.           BANDED MONGOOSE, Mungos mungo, Zebramangoeste
                10+ at Waza NP.

16.           WHITE-TAILED MONGOOSE, Ichneumia albicauda, Witstaartmangoeste
                1 at Benoue NP.

17.           COMMON GENET, Genetta genetta, Gewone Genet
                1 at Waza NP.

18.           AFRICAN CIVET, Civettictis civetta, Afrikaanse Civet
                A single observation during a nightdrive at Benoue NP.

19.           LION, Panthera leo, Leeuw
                Only heard at Campement du Bufflé Noir in Benoue NP.

20.           BLACK-NECKED ROCK HYRAX, Procavia johnstoni, Zwartnekrotsklipdas
                A few on the rocky outcrops near Mora.

21.           HIPPOPOTAMUS, Hippopotamus amphibius, Nijlpaard
                A few at Benoue NP.

22.           COMMON WARTHOG, Phacochoerus africanus, Wrattenzwijn
                25+ at Waza NP.

23.           GIRAFFE, Giraffa camelopardalis, Giraffe
                A few at Benoue NP, 30+ at Waza NP.

24.           RED-FLANKED DUIKER, Cephalophus rufilatus, Roodflankduiker
                Only one seen along the Benoue River at Benoue NP.

25.           KOB, Kobus kob, Kob
                Common at Benoue NP and Waza NP.

26.           RED-FRONTED (THOMSON'S) GAZELLE, Gazella rufifrons, Roodvoorhoofdgazelle
                Fairly common at Waza NP.

27.           TOPI, Damaliscus lunatus, Topi
                Up to 25 a day at Waza NP.

28.           KONGONI (HARTEBEEST), Alcelaphus buselaphus, Hartebeest
                Small numbers at Benoue NP and Waza NP.

29.           ROAN ANTELOPE, Hippotragus equinus, Paardantilope
                Up to 40 daily at Waza NP.

A number of small rodents were seen but not identified.

Other notable sightings were a Black Cobra at Mount Kupé and two species of chameleon also at Mount Kupé.
