Fuerteventura mid-January 2014
- Highlighted bird-wise by eight, probably nine Yellow-browed Warblers, 5 Houbara in quick succession and seasonally unexpected close, prolonged views of Plain Swift on the final day....Pete Marsh reports.
Fuerteventura 20th-27th February 2013
- Trumpeter Finch was a long overdue ‘world tick’ along with Berthelot’s Pipits. Lesser Short-toed Lark, Spanish Sparrow, Spectacled Warbler and Southern Grey Shrike kick-started what were to be ubiquitous birds during the week...Pete Marsh reports.
Fuerteventura Feb 3rd - March 3rd, 2010

Fuerteventura 17th February to 3rd March 2009
- A fantastic two-week trip to Fuerteventura, managing to catch up with all but one of the key bird species and do some important research in the process...Tristan Norton reports
Fuerteventura bird and butterfly report 2nd March to 9th March 2008
- Cory’s Shearwaters were regularly seen offshore, especially from mid afternoon to evening and a good place to watch them was on the point just to the north of the resort. The resort area was the best place to watch butterflies with African Migrant (Catopsilia florella) seen regularly around the front of Puerto Caleta....Stuart Fisher reports.
Fuerteventura January 2007
- Having discovered the Canaries
in December 2005 (a week in Tenerife) we were bitten by the mid-winter-birding-in-the-sunshine
bug so decided to try Fuerteventura, where we expected to see more
species than the 32 we saw in Tenerife but, maybe, less lifers
(9 in Tenerife)....Dawn & Malc Roberts report.
Fuerteventura 01/11/2006-08/11/2006
- There were also
several (Northern) Wheatears
on the plain, flitting from rock to rock. I then stumbled
across the wadi and almost immediately as I entered, I disturbed
a male Black-bellied Sandgrouse...Andy Millar reports.
Fuerteventura 14th-28th
Nov 2006 -
list from Alec Cheney
Fuerteventura 7th
- 14th September 2006
- Being very familiar with
the common raven coming from Snowdonia these had a different
croak, getting out the scope I noticed the beak was very
thin. Getting
the field guide out noticing the tail was the same length
as the primaries these two birds must have been brown necked
raven....Gareth Jones Reports
Fuerteventura, 6th-13th
March 2006
- Our aim was to see Canary
Islands Stonechat and Houbara Bustard. In 1982 I had seen the
bustard in the Negev Desert in Israel, but the race macqueenii of
Houbara Bustard is recently raised to species level: Macqueen’s
Bustard, Chlamydotis macqueenii...Jan
Vermeulen reports
Fuerteventura February
2006
- This trip was a mixture of birding and family sightseeing. Given
restrictions on time in the field the target was to see the Chat,
the Bustard and a minimum of 50 species whilst accepting a few
island specialties might be missed. This was achieved,
and the finding of a Spanish national rarity added greatly to
the bonhomie of an already good week...Stephen Dunstan reports
More on Fuerteventura Feb
2006
- This note is intended to summarise
four trips to the island made by British birders in February
2006, including my own, to give a more rounded feel of sites
to visit and the total number of species available than my trip
report on its own...Stephen Dunstan reports.

Fuerteventura 2-9th
March 2005
- In the distance you will see a disused farm
shell, make this your base for scanning for Houbaras, a favoured
spot seems to be the disused raised cultivations to the south
east of the farm. Also present in this area were Black bellied
Sandgrouse, Cream Coloured Coursers, [6+] several pairs of Barbary
Partridge and Spectacled Warbler...Chris Knox
reports.
Fuerteventura January
2005
- The Gorriones beach is superb - just miles
and miles of sand for birding/walking/jogging. Wonderful views
of Slender-billed gull. Lots of naturists - care with binoculars!.....David
and Annette Tomlinson report.
Fuerteventura 16th-23st
May 2004
- I found many good birds immediately in the
desert around the resort of Cateles de Fustes. The golf course
here held Berthelot's Pipits, Souhern Grey Shrikes, a family of
Kentish plovers and Hoopes all down to a few metres....Mark
Cornish reports
Fuerteventura and Lanzarote
15th April 22th April 2004
- A short trip to Fuertaventura and one day
to Lanzarote with my girlfriend to go birdwatching and get some
rest. Because I needed till the very last day to see Cream-coloured
Courser, I actually didn't get much rest. Birdwatching - on my
own - was more difficult than I expected, especially when it was
windy ....Bas Lagerveld reports.

Birding Fuerteventura
5th to 19th Nov 2003
- Anne and I travelled to the Canarian
Island of Fuerteventura for two weeks birding, sight-seeing
and sun. This report chronicles the former, however it must
be said that there were few occasions when we didn't have
our bins to hand. The attraction to Fuerteventura was the
prospect of the endemic Chat and other specialist species
found on the island...Alan Miller reports

Fuerteventura 15th
- 22nd April 2003
- We arrived at midday, and on the hours
drive south through the island, we saw 'atlantis'
Yellow-legged Gulls and a Southern Grey Shrike on the wires
by the side of the FV2, just past Costa Calma. In the hotel
grounds, we had a male Spanish Sparrow permanently chirping
outside the balcony, but the bird was the commonest bird
seen on the island...Nick Smith reports

New Year on Fuerteventura
Dec-Jan 02-03
- Sooner or later every birder needing to complete
their Western Palaearctic list has to visit Fuerteventura to see
the Canary Islands Chat, which occurs nowhere else on earth! Arriving
on 29th December 2002, we discovered a whole lot more on this
desert island.
