Cape Verde Islands 21 Feb-2 Mar, 2008

  • The Cabo Verde islands are a volcanic archipelago lying 450-800 Km west of Senegal. The islands are fun for birding. Not because the great numbers of birds or species diversity, but because of several endemics and especially the surprises from other continents...Diederik van der Molen reports.

Cabo Verde 21st December 2006 to 04(08) January 2007

  • During our Christmas holidays, (dec.2006/jan.2007) I visited together with my wife Daniëlle,  several islands of Cabo Verde in search of the island endemics possible during that period....Henk Hendricks reports
White-faced Petrel
Cape Verde Islands 24th February-7th March 2005

Bar-tailed desert lark

Bird observations in the Cape Verde Islands 18th – 26th October 2003

  • The bird fauna of the Cape Verdes is not very diverse, but it holds a number of interesting, endemic species and subspecies. In this sense, the islands are absolutely worth a visit. Unfortunately, the populations of a number of the endemic breeding bird are declining rapidly, and some are on the brink of extinction. Bannerman’s Buzzard and Cape Verde Peregrine are down to a few tens of pairs...Erling Krabbe reports

Cape Verde Islands April 2003

  • From the lounge we spotted our first endemic: a family of Iago Sparrows.....On Boavista we had some more common species like Brown-necked Raven, Brown Booby, and a hand full of waders. Far away we saw a few Red-billed Tropicbirds....Nico Geiregat reports.

Cape Verde Islands 3rd to 16th March 2003

  • I found the Islands to be a strange birding destination, they have not got a large species list and even most of those are regarded as vagrants. The birds that are there though are either endemic species (including a number of phylogenic species) or endemic sub-species. Also they have the only Western Palaearctic occurrence of certain Species such as the Tropicbird...Rob Payne reports.

Recommended travel books for the Cape Verdes

Cape Verde Islands: The Bradt Travel Guide
Aisling Irwin, Colum Wilson: Buy from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk

  • I'm just back from Cabo Verde, where I travelled in the company of this guide-book, which was an excellent support. There's no guide on the market as good as this, and having heard of Bradt Publications the first time, I will definitely specifically look for their books in the future...
