Thanks to…

… Bernard Van Elegem, Bjorn Anderson and Mark Van Beirs for their very usefull information. This information was very valuable for planning our trip and for finding many of the special birds. Thanks also to Mark, Bernard and Raf Drijvers for their sound recordings. Also thanks to Frank Rheindt and the staff from Oriental Bird Club for sending a copy of the article about the Phylloscopus and Seicercus warblers, before it was published in BirdingAsia.

Thanks to the Dutch team (Jeroen De Bruijn, Remco Hofland, Diederik Kok, Peter Maaskant and Chris Quispel) for their latest up-to-date info that we exchanged at our evening meetings and for the good birding time together on a few days.

Also thanks to our driver Tcha for driving us around for more than 3 weeks. Consersation between us was not always easy, but we made it. Tcha speaks just little English, but that was enough to explain him were we wanted to go and sometimes more importanted, what we wanted to eat. An interpreter was not necessary.

Flights

International flights between Paris Charles de Gaulle and Beijing by Air France. Domestic flights from Beijing to Chengdu by Air China. Total price was 1164 euro, without flight assurance.

Transport

Mr. Dai Bo arranged transport from Chengdu to Laojanshan. Mr. Dai Bo himself was waiting for us at the airport in Chengdu, together with the director of Laojanshan and their wives. It was a long drive to Pingshan, just near Laojanshan. We arrived there after midnight. Transport between Chengdu and Pingshan was 1500 yuan, between Pingshan and Laojanshan 300 yuan.

For the rest of the trip we hired a car with driver by Samtours, Chengdu Overseas Tourist Corporation Sam’s Guesthouse, No.130 Shanxijie Chengdu, Tel: 86-28-86118322, Fax: 86-28-86154179, samtour@yahoo.com. It is not recommended to do the driving yourself. First probles is that China does not accept an international driving license. Secondly, finding the way on your own is also a great problem as nearly no one speak English and there are no road signs in English on the smaller roads.

The car we hired was a 4x4 Chinese made Cherokee Jeep. Tcha’s knowledge of English was rather poor but this was not a problem at all. It was not his first trip with birdwatchers so he knows what birdwatchers want. It was no problem for him to wake up early morning and to make long days in the field. We can absolutely recommend him. The price was 800 yuan per day. This price includes rental of the car, petrol, entrance fee of the car in some parks, toll fee, salary for our driver and payment for his food and accommodation. At the most places that we stayed, we took 2 double rooms. In these cases, Tom shared a room with Tcha and they both paid half of the price. This made it cheaper for us and for Tscha.

Money

It is absolutely recommended to change money in Chengdu, as it is impossible to find a bank that changes money out of the province’s capital. We tried in many banks outside Chengdu to change money but always without success. We even had to borrow some money from Sam because half way of the trip we were out of yuans. There we were with all our euro’s and no bank wanted to accept them. Even our bankcards (VISA and Maestro Card) did not work at the money terminals outside Chengdu. We did not try the terminals in Chengdu. In Chengdu we changed money at the Bank of China just near the airport. Exchange rate was 1 euro = 9.98 yuan. We changed money a second time in Chengdu during the last week of our stay. This was in a bigger branch of the Bank of China, at the suburds. Exchange rate at this time was 1 euro = 10.05 yuan.

Guides

The “A Field Guide to the Birds of China” by J. MacKinnon and K. Phillipps is the only field guide that covers all the species, except for a few newly described species/splits (especially Phylloscopus and Seicercus warblers). Two other field guides that we used were “A Field Guide to the Birds of South-east Asia” by C. Robson and “Pocket Guide to the Birds of the Indian Subcontinent” by R. Grimmett, C. Inskipp and T. Inskipp. I also got a copy of the article about the Phylloscopus and Seicercus warblers, written by F. Rheindt and published in BirdingAsia number 5 – June 2006. It was a great help to disentangle the warbler-tangle.

To identify mammals, we used “The Mammals of China” by Sheng Helin, Noriyuki Ohtaishi and Lu Houji.

Internet sources and trip reports

China is a popular birdwatching destination during the last years so a lot of information is available on the internet.

The trip reports written by Bjorn Anderson are especially worth mentioning. Bjorn made many reports of his short birdwatching trips all over the Chinese country. The trip reports of Frank Rheindt contain up-to-date information about recent taxonomic publications and decisions. Many more, you can find via www.travellingbirder.com.

Other trip reports we found on the internet were:

·       On the Ornifolks website: http://ornifolks.org/Ornifolks/Reports/SIC%20report.pdf. This report contains a few maps.

·       Trip reports on the Birdquest website: http://www.birdquest.co.uk/frameset.cfm?tripReports=0,

Private published reports we used were:

·        China – Sichuan: Wolong, Roe Er Gai & Jui Zhai Gou – June 1996 and Emie Shan – May 1997 by Peter Hopkin. Sold in aid of the Oriental Bird Club Conservation Fund

http://www.orientalbirdclub.org/sales/tripreports.html

This report contains usefull maps.

·        We used some maps from an old trip report. We got these maps from Bernard. I do not know with which report they belong. The maps are from Emei Shan, Jiuzhaigou, Ruoergai and Balangshan.

The book “Where to watch birds in Asia” by Nigel Wheatley contains also some usefull information.

Visited sites – costs - accomodation

There is already a lot of good information for most of the birdwatching places in the trip reports that we used. I did not repeat all the information that can be found in other reports on the internet. This is just some additional info.

Ø      Laojanshan

Laojanshan is near Pingshan, south of Chengdu. More information in the trip reports of Bjorn Anderson and Frank Rheindt.

We paid 4800 yuan in total. This includes all the services that were arranged by Mr. Dai Bo. These services included the transport from Chengdu to Pingshan and Laojanshan, the hotel in Pingshan, the entrance fee for Laojanshan, the food and accommodation in Laojanshan and a porter. You can contact Mr. Dai Bo at dai-bo@126.com. His help is absolutely necessary if you want to visit Laojanshan.

Ø      Wawu Shan

Just outside the park - Wawu Shan Hotel: 160 yuan/double room

Inside the park – Gongtong Hotel: 268 yuan/double room

Entrance park: 50 yuan/pp

Cable-lift: 50 yuan/pp. Open from 8.00h to 17.00h. It takes 35 minutes for a single way.

Food in the restaurant near the parking: +/- 100 yuan/3p

Ø      Wolong

We stayed at the Tilong Hotel, 180yuan/3persons room. Food: +/- 90yuan/3p.

The areas that are near Sawan/Wolong are:

·        Sawan – the hillsides near the village of Sawan, also known as Wolong village. Just near the village, there is the Wolong Panda Research Centre. In this zoo there are tens of Pandas. It is the world’s most famous breeding centre for captive-hold Pandas.

·        Wuyipeng/Wolong Panda Reserve – the panda reserve, just outside Sawan, in the direction of Balanshan Pass, is 200.000 hectares. There is a trail leading to a research centre at the top of the plateau. The trail to the research centre and the trails starting at the research centre are all very good for birdwatching.

·        Balanshan – the pass that reaches 4500 metres above sealevel. More than 2 hours driving from Sawan to reach the top of the pass.

Ø      Mungbi Shan

Mungbi Shan is an hour driving to the south of Maerkang, in the direction of Fubian.

We stayed in the Min Shan Hotel, 180 yuan/double room.

Ø      Hongyuan area

Hongyuan Hotel; 150 yuan/double room

Ø      Ruoergai area

I forgot the name of the hotel. We paid 150 yuan/double room

Ø      Juizhaigou

Outside the park, we stayed in the Ming Shan Hotel; 150 yuan/ 3-persons room. This hotel is a few hundred metres west of the entrance of the park, on the opposite site of the road.

Inside the park we stayed with a family in Zechawa village, they are living in a former hotel; 25 yuan/per person per night. The son of the owners speaks perfect English. This was a great help as his parents did not speak or understand a single word of English. Officially, it is no longer allowed to overnight in the park. When it still was, the people of the village built small hotels. It was in one of these hotels that we stayed in. The village is on your right hand side along the road to Long Lake. The house we stayed in is the third one of the village, and it is the first that is a little bit further (+/- 50 metres) from the road.

Entrance fee for the park; 220 yuan/per person per day + 90 yuan for the bus per person per day.

For our predawn transport inside the park (buses are just driving from 8.00h), we arranged transport with the owner of the house we stayed. This was expensive. 100 yuan transport to Long Lake and 150 yuan transport to Primeval Forest. During the day we used the buses to go from one place to the other. We never had control of our bus tickets (the tickets were only valid for the day we entered the park).

Ø      Emei Shan

At the base of the mountain, you will find Bao Guo. We stayed in Nathan’s Hotel. I forgot the price but it was not more expensive then the other hotels we stayed in. What was for sure, it was the cleanest hotel we stayed in during the whole trip.

Lodgement Chudian Palace: 40 yuan/pp.

Entrance fee for Emei Shan, 120 yuan/pp. Bus Bao Guo – Leidongping (top): 30 yuan/pp

Bus Wuxian-gang (base of the mountain) – Bao Guo: 9 yuan/pp.

Ø      Du Fu Cottage

This is a small city park in the centre of Chengdu. Entrance fee 60 yuan/pp.

Ø      Qingchengshan

Qingcheng Shan is situated in the foothills at the edge of the Red Basin. It is just more than an hour drive from Chengdu. The mountain has been a centre of Buddhism and Taoism for almost 2000 years and a good spot for a number of lower altitude species. Brown-rumped Minivet is one of the key species here.

Ø      Chengdu

This is the province’s capital. It is a fast growing city. Road and high flat constructions were going on everywhere in the suburbs. We stayed the last night in Sam’s Guesthouse: 120 yuan/double room, 100 yuan/ single room.

Daily log

Ø        May 18th

We left home at 14.20h. By train, we went to Brussels where we took the Thalys to Charles de Gaulle – Paris at 16.20h. Our flight to Beijing departed at 18.55h.

Ø        May 19th

We arrived in Beijing at 11.00h. Our flight to Chengdu was at 13.00h. When we arrived in the capital of the Sichuan province it was 15.30h.. We met Mr. Dai Bo and the director of Laojanshan, together with their wives. After we changed money in the Bank of China, just opposite the airport entrance, we started the long drive to Pingshan. In Yibin, we had dinner. Between Chengdu and Yibin there is a highway (toll), between Yibin and Pingshan there is a much smaller secundairy road. At many places, they were constructing new concrete roads. It was already after midnight when we arrived in Pingshan. We stayed in a hotel in the city. Mr. Dai Bo arranged this hotel for us.

Ø        May 20th

After a very short night we woke up at 4.30h.. Before driving to Laojanshan, we passed at the headquarters of Laojanshan NP, in Pingshan. We left most of our luggage here. From here, it is more than an hour driving to the endpoint of the road on Laojanshan. From there, you can only go higher up by a trail. From the car we heard and saw our first birds. Large Hawk-Cuckoos were commonly heard, we saw several Chinese Bamboo-Partridges running on the track. Some of them were just in front of the car for minutes, so despite dawn we had great views of some of them. A White-crowned Forktail was flying away near a small stream.

We hired a porter to carry our larger backpacks so it was more comfortable climbing the mountain and to do birdwatching along the climb to the ridge. Between the start of the trail and the first guesthouse, Er Ya Ping we saw already Lesser Cuckoo, Siberian and Ferruginous Flycatchers, Grey-headed Canary-flycatcher, Grey-headed Parrotbill and Ashy Drongo. Near the first guesthouse we spend less then an hour. We heard a Bay Woodpecker, we saw and heard Brownish-flanked Bush-warblers, White-tailed Leaf-warbler, White-spectacled Warbler and heard a White-tailed Robin. Grey-faced Liocichlas were easy to see here. Most of the specialities are higher up so we did not want to lose too much time at the lower parts. We left the guesthouse at 10.00h. We walked not that fast today and spend a lot of time birdwatching along the trail. Most of the time was spend between the top of the stairs (start of the ridge) and the guesthouse. We arrived at the Laojanshan Guesthouse at 17.00h.. This guesthouse is just a simple wooden house, a Chinese couple is living here and they cook for the guests. Here we also met a Chinese PHD-student. He was studying Temminck’s Tragopan in this area for already more than six months. During the day we saw Sichuan Partridge (HO), Wedge-tailed Pigeon, Oriental Cuckoo, Darjeeling, White-backed and Grey-faced Woodpecker, Mountail Bulbul, Martens’s Warbler, Rufous-faced and Chestnut-crowned Warbler, Streak-breasted Scimitar-babbler, Red-billed Leiothrix (very common on all elevations on Laojanshan), White-browed Shrike-babbler, Blue-winged and Red-tailed Minla and Black-headed Sibia. Near the guesthouse, we found Elliot’s, Red-winged and Rusty Laughingthrush, Golden Parrotbill and White-collared Yuhina. Because of the previous short night and the jetlag that we were suffering, we went to bed at 19.00h.. It was raining during the whole night.

Ø        May 21st

When we woke up at first daylight, it was still raining. Despite the rain we decided to start birdwatching and soon after we were outside it stopped raining. During the rest of the day we had dry and sunny weather. We spend the whole day between the guesthouse and along the ridge. Birds we saw were Sichuan Partridge, Large Hawk-Cuckoo, Oriental and Lesser Cuckoo, Grey-faced, White-backed and Bay Woodpeckers, Sichuan Leaf-warbler, Martens’s Warbler, White-tailed Robin, Rusty, Elliot’s and Red-winged Laughingthrushes, Grey-faced Liocichla, Streak-breasted Scimitar-babbler, Rufous-capped Babbler, Red-billed Leiothrix, Blue-winged and Red-tailed Minlas, Golden-breasted Fulvetta, Black-headed Sibia, White-collared Yuhina, Golden Parrotbill, Yellow-browed and Green-backed Tits and Gould’s Sunbird. In the evening we heard 2 Oriental Scops-owls along the trail that goes down, opposite the guesthouse.

Ø        May 22nd

Today the sky was blue, no clouds were present. We spend again the whole day along the trail between the guesthouse and the stairs. New birds we saw were Oriental Honey-buzzard, Besra, Temminck’s Tragopan, Spotted Laughingthrush, Stripe-throated Yuhina, Black-throated Tit and Japanese White-eye.

Ø        May 23rd

At 6.00h we had breakfast and we said goodbye to the Chinese couple in the guesthouse. We took our time to search a last time for the Streaked Barwing and Gold-fronted Fulvetta but once again we were unsuccessfull. At 9.00h, we were at the top of the stairs. Along the trail Erwin saw our only Crimson-breasted Woodpecker for Laojanshan. From the stairs we start walking faster. Our plan was to be down at the end of the trail at 11.00h.. Despite that we were hurring we saw some new birds like Spot-breasted Scimitar-babbler, Pygmy Wren-babbler, Streak-throated and Grey-cheeked Fulvetta. At 11.15h, we were at the beginning of the trail where Mr. Dai Bo was waiting for us. We drove down to Laojanshan and at the base, the driver of Sam Tours was waiting for us. His name was Tcha. He collected already our luggage in Pingshan. Therefore, we did not have to pass in Pingshan anymore and we immediately started the long drive to Wawu Shan. We left at 12.00h.. The first 2 hours we drove along terrible, dusty roads but then we reached a concrete road and we moved on faster. We had lunch in Leshan. The bridge over the river near Leshan was closed. We had to make a detour and take a ferry to cross the river.

At the same time that we were in China, a group of 5 Dutch birders was in country too. They planned to visit Laojanshan after we did, we planned to visit Wawu Shan after them. At home, we planned to meet each other today, along the way when we were both travelling. Due to the detour that we had to make, this plan failed. Therefore, we changed our information about the places by sending messages by mobiles telephone. We also agreed to meet each other in Wolong, a few days later.

To drive to Wawu Shan we passed Emei Shan. From the junction that signpost “Emei Shan 6 km” it is still a 3 hours drive to the base of Wawu Shan. We arrived here at 21.00h.. The park is already closing at 17.00h.. Therefore, we stayed in the Wawu Shan Hotel, just at the entrance. During our long journey today, we saw Little and Cattle Egrets, House Swift, Light-vented Bulbul, Plain Prinia, White-crowned Forktail, Crested Myna and Oriental Greenfinch.

Ø     May 24th

As the entrance of Wawu Shan just opens at 8.00h, we spend the first 2 hours today near the hotel. There were not so many birds, just along the stream opposite the hotel we saw a few species like Brown Dipper, White-capped and Plumbeous Redstarts, Slaty-backed and White-crowned Forktails.

At 8.00h, we entered the reserve. We drove slow and searched for Lady Amherst Pheasant. These birds are crossing the road very often and this makes Wawu Shan one of the best places to see this spectacular bird. At mid elevation, Erwin saw a male disappearing in the forest, but the bird was to fast for Tom and me. We went out of the car to search for the bird but the dense leaves made it impossible to refind the bird.

It was just past 10.00h when we arrived at the parking. Around the parking there are small sheds were the employees of the reserve are staying. In one of the sheds, there is a restaurant. From this place, a cable car is going up to the top of Wawu Shan. There were clouds at the top but the weather looked fine enough for us to go to the top as soon as possible. However, we were wrong. Even before we reached the top, it started raining. At the top there was dense fog, rain and nearly no birds. There was so much fog that it was even impossible to identify the tits that were in the trees just above us. We identified Lesser Cuckoos, we heard Brownish-flanked and Aberrant Bush-warblers, we saw Sichuan, two Buff-barred, a few Two-barred and Bianchi’s Warblers, a Ferruginous Flycatcher, two Streak-throated Fulvettas and an Eurasian Treecreeper. We stayed for just an hour near the cable-lift building. Behind here, there is a rubbish dump attracts birds. We saw Slaty-blue Flycatcher, Golden Bush-robin and White-bellied Redstart. At 12.00h we were down at the parking again. We checked the bushes behind the sheds. A Richards Pipit was an unexpected bird here. Further on it was rather quiet.

We drove 10 km in the direction of the entrance again but the weather remained bad so we did not see many birds in the afternoon. Large-billed Leaf-warblers and Large Hawk-cuckoos seemed to be the only species that were not concerned about the weather. They were singing everywhere. Further, we only saw Black Bulbuls, Blue Whistling-thrushes and Golden Parrotbills.

It was just in the evening that it stopped raining. The clouds disappeared, even at the top of Wawu Shan. During our stay in Wawu Shan, we slept in the large Gongtong Hotel, just near the parking. We were the only guests here.

Ø     May 25th

Today the weather was completely different from yesterday. The sky was blue with not a single cloud in the air. We watched birds near the hotel and the sheds. We saw Elliot’s Laughingthrush, Red-billed Blue-magpie and a female Dark-rumped Rosefinch. The cable-lift was already open at 7.40h and we went up for our second time. Due to the good weather, bird activity was overwhelming. There were birds everywhere and we started to see the first good species. The birds were active during the whole day even when temperature was getting high at noon. At 17.00h, we had to go down again. We had an excellent day with species like Himalayan Swiflet, White-throated Needletail, Crimson-breasted Woodpecker, Long-tailed Minivet, Brownish-flanked, Aberrant, Yellowish-bellied and Brown Bush-warblers, Buff-throated, Buff-barred, Sichuan, Two-barred and Blyth’s Leaf-warblers, Bianchi’s Warblers, Ferruginous and Rufous-gorgeted Flycatchers, Golden and White-browed Bush-robin (HO), Streak-throated Fulvetta, White-collared Yuhina, a magnificent set of Parrotbills with Great, Brown, Three-toed, Grey-hooded and Fulvous, Grey-crested Tit and Sichuan Treecreeper. We also found a dead Little Forktail. From out of the cable car, Tom saw a nest of a Temminck’s Tragopan, just under the cable-lift.

When we were down again we walked the road down for less than a kilometre. We saw Asian Barred Owlet and Verditer Flycatcher. In the evening, a (Himalayan) Tawny Owl was calling near the hotel. The bird reacts also very well to tape. Despite it was calling always near us we could not catch it in our torches. We tried to see it for more then half an hour and then the bird left.

Ø     May 26th

Before dawn, the Tawny Owl was calling again near the hotel. Again, we did not see it. Today we stayed the whole day at the lower elevations of the park, at a height of nearly 1500 metres. The weather was not good with dense fog and clouds the whole day. At noon, it also started to rain. At 16.30h, it was raining so hard that we had to stop birdwatching for the rest of the day. Despite the bad weather, we saw many good species. We birded along the road but also along a small track that starts at the right sight of the road, just in a sharp bend to the left. This trail lead to an open place with small fields, bordered with small patches of forest. We observed Temminck’s Tragopan, Lady Amherst’s Pheasant, Speckled Wood-pigeon, Wedge-tailed Pigeon, Himalayan Swifllet, White-throated Needletail, Grey-faced and Bay Woodpecker, Black Bulbul, Emei Leaf-warbler, Grey-crowned and Chestnut-crowned Warbler, Verditer Flycatcher, Grey-faced Liocichla, Chinese Babax, Streak-throated and Grey-cheeked Fulvetta, Golden Parrotbill, Black-throated and Yellow-bellied Tit, Hair-crested Drongo and Grey-headed Bullfinch.

Ø     May 27th

This morning it was still raining. And it was raining so hard that we stayed in the hotel until 9.00h.. Then the weather was getting better. Sometimes the sun was even shining through the fog and clouds. We decided to go to the top for the last time. Near the hotel, we had excellent views of a Darjeeling Woodpecker, while we were walking to the cable-lift. Nearly at the top, we saw two Brown Parrotbills from out of the cable car. Once we were at the top, it started raining again and this went on for the rest of the day. We still had to see some species up here so we stayed for the rest of the day. We did not see many birds, new ones were Ashy-throated Warblers, Black-faced Laughingthrush, Rufous-vented Tit and a Brown Shrike. We took the cable-lift back down at 16.00h. We found the nest of the tragopan again that Tom saw, but now the eggs were destroyed. The last hours of the day were spend birdwatching near the sheds and the hotel again.

Ø     May 28th

During the night, it stopped raining and at 5.00h, we were already out of the hotel to search for the Tawny Owl. However, this morning there was no response on the tape. We missed our last chance to see the owl as we were leaving Wawu Shan at 6.00h.. When we were driving, we saw a Hodgson's Hawk-Cuckoo sitting in a dead tree. At 7.30h, we were at the gate. We spend an hour birdwatching along a small road that goes left, just before the gate, as you are entering the park. Along this road, we saw a few of the lowland species as there are Brown-breasted Flycatcher, Black-chinned Yuhina and Ashy-throated Parrotbill.

It was nearly 9 o’clock when we started the long drive to Wolong. We arrived there at 18.30h.. The ride went smooth except for the last part of road to Wolong. They were repairing the road. We had to wait a few times when they were unloading a truck. Then, in a small village just before Wolong, there was even a strike of the road workers. They blocked the road by a sit-in. There was a violent discussion between the workers and, what we thought, their bosses. Also the people of the village were all around and they were following the debates. It took more than half an hour before the road was cleared again.

In Wolong, they build many large and expensive hotels during the last years. The area near this village is the most famous place to see the Giant Panda. Lot of accommodation is build for the thousands of tourists that would be expect in 2008, when the Olympic Games are going on in Beijing. We did not stay in one of these large hotels. We stayed in the Tilong Hotel, a small hotel, just at the end of Sawan, on the left side of the road, when you are driving in the direction of Wuyipeng.

Later in the evening, we met the Dutch birdwatchers, Jeroen De Bruyn, Remco Hofland, Diederik Kok, Peter Maaskant and Chris Quispel at the Wolong Hotel. They arrived in Sawan earlier this day and they were already birdwatching on the hillsides near the village this afternoon. You can find their trip report at http://81.207.105.204/doc/sichuan0506.pdf

We changed information and had to tell many stories about the birds we saw the previous days.

Ø     May 29th

In the morning, we went up the hills just near Sawan. The weather was fine for the whole day. The best place to find the specialities are the steep slopes behind the large hotels (Wolong Hotel and other large hotels). There are a few trails going up but most of them are not easy to find. You have to climb the wall behind the hotels and houses. Then you will more easely find a trail. The Dutch birdwatchers went here yesterday and they explaned were they went up the hill. They found many birds along this trail. We hoped to do the same and we did. We found Golden Pheasant, Collared Finchbill, Sichuan, Chinese and Blyth’s Leaf-warbler, Grey-crowned Warbler, Indian Blue Robin, Elliot’s Laughingthrush, Streak-throated and White-collared Yuhina, Sooty and Yellow-bellied Tit, Grey-headed Bullfinch and a pair Slaty Buntings with fledgings. Earlier afternoon we came down again. In the village, between the hotels we found Daurian and Plumbeous Redstart, Grey-backed Shrike and Black-backed Wagtail ssp. leucopsis. In the bushes along the river behind our hotel, we also found two Collared Finchbills.

We tried to change money in the two banks that we found in Wolong, but without success. We went to bed earlier as we had to wake up very early tomorrow morning to visit Balanshan Pass.

Ø     May 30th

At 3.00h, we left the hotel and we drove up to Balanshan Pass. Our first stop was at km 92. We arrived here a few minutes past 4.00h.. Much to early as sunrise just started after 5.00h.. Now we understand what our driver tried to explain to us yesterday evening. He knew that leaving at 3 o’clock was much too early but we did not listen to him. At dawn, we saw Chinese Monal and White Eared-pheasant at km 92. Especially the monals gave great views as they were just near the road. They crossed it to keep on fouraging on the meadows on the other side. We spend the whole day between km 92 and the top of the pass. We also drove a few kilometres over the top in the direction of Rilong. We had excellent weather at Balanshan Pass. It was cold but for the rest the mountain was covered in sunshine Just from time to time clouds were covering the sun.. Just at and over the top there was dense fog and the ground was still covered with snow.

This was one of our best birdwatching days of the whole trip with Lammergeier, Himalayan Griffon, Eurasian Buzzard, Snow Partridge, Tibetan Snowcock, Ring-necked Pheasant, Fork-tailed Swift, Eurasian Crag-martin, Asian House-martin, Olive-backed and Rosy Pipit, Alpine and Rufous-breasted Accentor, Chest-bellied Rock-thrush, Chestnut and White-backed (Kesslers) Thrush, Buff-throated, Lemon-rumped and Greenish Warbler, Sichuan and Blyth’s Leaf-warbler, White-tailed Rubythroat, Red-flanked Bluetail, Blue-fronted Redstart, Grandala, Songar Tit, Grey-backed Shrike, Black Drongo, Eurasian Nutcracker, Yellow-billed Cough, Plain and Black-headed (Brandt’s) Mountain-finch, Dark-breasted, Common, White-browed, Streaked and Red-fronted Rosefinch and Grey-headed Bullfinch

In the evening we spend some time at Dengshen, this is at the foot of Balanshan. Bird activity was very low here and we hardly saw a bird. In the evening, we met the Dutch team in their hotel again. They stayed for 2 days in Wuyipeng. The number of species they saw was fantastic. However, they got bad news for us. Nobody was allowed to stay any longer in Wuyipeng unless you pay 120 dollar per person per day. They also released a Panda with a transmitter who they were tracking. To avoid disturbance of this Panda, some of the trails were closed also. The Dutchmen were the last group where they made an exception and let them stay. Nevertheless, we managed to enter Wuyipeng a few days later, read at June 1st.

For tomorrow, we made an appointment with Remco and co to go birding together on the Balanshan Pass. We still had to see the Wood Snipe.

Ø     May 31st

This morning we left later for Balanshan Pass then yesterday. We left at 4.15h.. Our driver was driving much slower than he was use to do. We tried to urge him to drive faster but that gave no result. We just arrived in time, at first dawn, at km 94, the place for Wood Snipe. A few Englisch birders were at km 94 already, the Dutch birders were standing a few hundred metres past km 94. At this place, there are pastures on the steep flanks, on both sides of the road. This is Wood Snipe’s habitat. We waited for about 15 minutes but no Wood Snipe was seen. However, as soon as we played the tape, a bird was calling and it was flying just over our head. Later we heard one, or many two birds, calling deep inside the valley. After seeing the snipe, we drove to km 92 for Chinese Monal. Today the birds were present again, we saw 6 birds.

The rest of the day, we were birdwatching between km 92 and Dengshen. In the afternoon, we met the Dutch birders again. They were birding in this area also, after they were at the top before noon. Remco was no longer with them, he was injured at this leg and they took him to the hotel. We finished the day near the white obelisk, just higher than Dengshen. Other birds we saw today were Himalayan Griffon, Golden Eagle, Koklass Pheasant (HO), White Eared-Pheasant, Ring-necked Pheasant, Snow Pigeon, Fork-tailed Swift, Eurasian Crag-martin, Asian House-martin, Olive-backed Pipit, Long-tailed Minivet, Rufous-breasted Accentor, Chestnut Thrush, Southern Spotted Bush-Warbler, Tickell’s, Sichuan and Large-billed Leaf-warbler, Buff-throated, Buff-barred and Greenish Warbler, Slaty-blue Flycatcher, Giant and Elliot’s Laughingthrush, Streak-throated Fulvetta, Songar and Grey-crested Tit, Black Drongo, Eurasian Nutcracker, Large-billed Crow, Dark-breasted, Common and White-browed Rosefinches, Tibetan Serin and Grey-headed Bullfinch.

Ø     June 1st

Despite the fact that Wuyipeng was closed for birders these days, we would try to go there. It was just a 10 minutes drive from the hotel to the place where you can take the steep trail that leads to the research station. We started the climb at 6.20h and we were on the ridge to the research centre at 11.00h.. Soon after we started climbing, two English birders arrived too. We had Golden Phesant (HO), Speckled Wood-pigeon, Speckled Piculet, Scaly Thrush, Brownish-flanked Bush-warbler, Blyth’s Leaf-warbler, Firethroat, Indian Blue-robin, Barred and Elliot’s Laughingthrush, Golden-breasted and Streak-throated Fulvetta, White-collared Yuhina, Yellow-bellied, Grey-crested and Green-backed Tit, Chestnut-vented Nuthatch and Eurasian Nutcracker. Just before the centre, there was a female Temminck’s Tragopan breeding in a tree. The nest was nearly 20 metres away from us and on the same height as the trail. Therefore, we had excellent views of the bird.

At the research centre, none of the rangers was there. We quickly passed the centre to follow the trail behind it for the rest of the day. Thanks to a tip from the Dutch birders, we found a female White-browed Bush-robin very soon. A second bird was heard. They were in dense bamboo along the trail just behind the research centre. Further, along the trail we found Bianchi’s Warbler, Slaty-backed and Taiga Flycatcher, Rufous-bellied Niltava, Grey-cheeked Fulvetta, Stripe-throated Yuhina, Fire-capped Tit and Gould’s Sunbird. At 16.00h, we started to go back. When we passed the centre now, the rangers were back. They were sitting indoors. Of course, they saw us and looked surprised to see us coming from the trail. We kept on walking and despite they were calling us, they stayed inside. Therefore, we walked further and we walked down again. During the day we met the two English birders from time to time. They were returning down also. They also stayed the whole day at Wuyipeng and they also did not meet one of the rangers.

Ø     June 2nd

Today we went to Wuyipeng again. We went up the trail faster then yesterday. We arrived at the top at 8.30h.. We spend the rest of the day on the trail between the top and the research centre. We observed Chinese Bamboo-partridges (HO), Golden Pheasant (HO), Speckled Wood-pigeon, Himalayan Swiflet, Fork-tailed Swift, White-backed Woodpecker, Long-tailed Minivet, Chestnut Thrush, Brownish-flanked and Yellowish-bellied Bush-warbler, Chinese and Blyth’s Leaf-warbler, Grey-crowned and Bianchi’s Warbler, Rufous-bellied Niltava, Firethroat (much better views than yesterday), Indian Blue-robin, Red-flanked Bluetail, Barred Laughingthrush, Streak-breasted Scimitar-babbler, Rufous-capped Babbler, Golden-breasted and Streak-throated Fulvetta, White-collared Yuhina, Sooty, Yellow-bellied, Grey-crested, Green-backed and Yellow-browed Tit, Chestnut-vented Nuthatch, Fire-capped Tit and Eurasian Nutcracker. Birdwatching was good before noon. In the afternoon fog became very dense and birdactivity low. We decided to go down earlier then planned. At 16.00h, we were on the road again. It was not possible to telephone our driver, there was no mobile phone connection in the small village. We agreed with our driver to meet us again at 18.00h., but now we were much earlier. Therefore, we walked back to the hotel. On the way we saw some of the commoner birds like Daurian and Plumbeous Redstart, Elliot’s Laughingthrush, Brown and Grey-backed Shrike and Black Drongo. After a few kilometres of walking, our driver arrived. We met one of the employees of the hotel along the way. He warned our driver that we were returning already.

Ø     June 3rd

At 5.00h, we left the hotel. Today our destination was Mungbi Shan and the nearby city of Maerkang, the place where we were planning the next days. Along the way, we had more than time enough for birdwatching. Our travelling road was along Balanshan Pass. We stopped at km 91 to scan the hillsides. We heard Koklass Pheasant calling here a few days ago and now we wanted to try for the last time to see one of these beautifull pheasants. The weather was good today, there were just a few clouds that were sliding over the hillsides from time to time. After scanning for about 30 minutes, Erwin finally found a male Koklass Pheasant. The bird was far away but with the telescope on 60 xs, we managed to have good views. After a few minutes, the bird disappeared behind a few bushes.

We drove further up Balanshan Pass. Tibetan Snowcock, Rosy Pipit, Alpine and Rufous-breasted Accentor, Chestnut Thrush, Siberian Flycatcher, Giant and Elliot’s Laughingthrush, Songar Tit and Common and White-browed Rosefinches were the other birds we observed while driving up the pass.

When you are passing the top, the road goes down in the direction of the city of Rilong. Also on this side of the mountain, we drove slowly and stopped many times to search for birds. Somewhere near km 127, you have a huge rock on the left side of the road, on the other side of a valley. On this rock, there was a nest of a Golden Eagle. An adult on the nest was feeding one young. Also on the rock, there were Hill and Snow Pigeons and a Wallcreeper.

Between km 127 and place with the small statues on both sides of the road, a few kilometres further down along the road, it was good for birdwatching. We saw Tickell’s Leaf-warbler, Siberian Flycatcher, White-throated Redstart, Elliot’s Laughingthrush, Chinese Babax, White-collared Yuhina, Rufous-vented, Yellow-bellied and Grey-crested Tit, Red-billed Cough, Common, Pink-rumped and Beautifull Rosefinch and Grey-headed Bullfinch in a short timeIt was 12 o’clock when we arrived in Rilong. We had lunch in the city and them we drove on to Mungbi Shan. Along the way, we saw Himalayan Griffon, White-throated and Hodgon’s Redstart (a couple near the entrance road to Wori), Yellow-bellied Flowerpecker (sitting on a powerline over the stream near a village on the junction to Fubian), Grey-backed Shrike, Black Drongo and a male Godlewski’s Bunting.

It was over 16.30h when we drove over Mungbi Shan Pass. A few hundreds metres over the top, we met the Dutch group again. They were doing roadside birding. A White-backed Thrush was sitting in the bushes just in front of us. Remco’s group found a trail here that goes down in the valley, into good forest. This trail starts at the meadow, just at the first and only house at your right side. They saw many good birds here. We decided to go there tomorrow too.

Now it was time to say goodbye to the Dutchmen. They went back to Wolong this evening and tomorrow they had their flight back home.

We finished the day by birdwatching along the road between km 26 and 28. The two English birders that we met on Balanshan were also here. Together we saw White Eared-Pheasants, Goldcrest, Crested Tit-warbler, White-throated Redstart, Elliot’s Laughingthrush, Rufous-vented and Grey-crested Tit, Eurasian Treecreeper, Large-billed Crow and White-browed Rosefinch.

On our way to Maerkang, we saw the results of bad weather in this area last night. There were a few smaller landslides and we saw the traces of the floods that were here last night and in the morning. The small river stream was still a swirling river. The Dutchmen told us that for them it was just possible to drive from Maerkang to Mungbi Shan at 11 o’clock. It took so long before the road workers were able to clear the road.

At 17.00h, we arrived in the large city of Maerkang where we stayed in the Min Shan Hotel.

Ø     June 4th

At 6.00h, we were at the house, just below the top of Mungbi Shan. At the beginning of the day, the weather was not so good. The fog was dense and it was raining slightly from time to time. After a fews hours the sun appeared and it even became to warm.

Through the meadow, we went down into the valley to the trail that the Dutchmen found a few days ago. This trail leads into magnificent forest. Moss was growing on the old trees and was covering the ground. This must be a place with good birds and so it was. During a half day birding we found Severtzov’s Grouse, Blood Pheasant, White Eared-pheasant, White-throated Needletail, Goldcrest, Maroon-backed Accentor, Long-tailed and Chestnut Thruh, Crested Tit-warbler, Buff-barred Warbler, Sichuan Leaf-warbler, Taiga Flycatcher, Red-flanked Bluetail, Giant Laughingthrush, Chinese Fulvetta, Rufous-vented and Grey-crested Tit, Eurasian Treecreeper, White-browed Rosefinch, Collared and White-winged Grosbeak. At noon, we climbed up the trail again. This was a great test for our physical condition. I do not think that we all succeeded the test. This was really hard, climbing a steep trail at a height of nearly 4000 metres.

We spend half an hour birdwatching near the top. Rosy Pipit, Rufous-breasted Accentor and White-backed Thrush were the only species we saw. Birdactivity was very low, probably due to the heat. We tried it at km 26 but also there it was very calm.

We decided to go back down to Maerkang to find a bank to chance money. We were nearly out of yuans, it was necessary that we could change our euros. However, we had the same problem as on the other places. We found no bank that chance money, even in this big city. Also our driver was nearly broke. We telephoned to Sam, maybe he could help us. And indeed, he had a good idea. He deposited money on Tcha’s bank account for us. We could pay him back later when we were in Chengdu.

Our money troubles were solved so we were relieved and we went back to Mungbi Shan. We concentrated our search between km 26 and 28. Species we saw were Himalayan Griffon, Oriental Turtle-dove, Black Woodpecker, Winter Wren, Tickell’s Leaf-warbler, Red-flanked Bluetail, White-throated and Blue-fronted Redstart, Giant Laughingthrush, Elliot’s Laughingthrush, Chinese Fulvetta, Rufous-vented and Grey-crested Tit, Grey-backed Shrike, Large-billed Crow, Common and White-browed Rosefinch. It was already getting dark when a larger bird was flying in a tree, just near the road at km 28. We found it quick and there it was, a Verreaux’s Partridge. Soon we saw a second bird in the same tree. The birds were sitting next to eachother to spend the night. Even with sunset, we managed to get satisfying telescope views of both birds.

After the partridge, our plan to search Pere David’s Owl was soon boycotted by rain. We drove back to Maerkang with a lot of good birds seen today.

Ø        June 5th

At 5.30h, we were back at Mungbi Shan. We started the day by birdwatching along the road, again between km 26 and 28. Highlights were a group of more then 10 Blood Pheasants, Chinese Thrush, Giant Laughingthrush, Chinese Fulvetta and Sichuan Jay. At noon, we drove to the top. We wanted to spend extra attention on the rosefinches, especially Pink-rumped and Beautifull Rosefinch. There were many rosefinches today. Finally, we managed to identify 1 Pink-rumped and more than 5 Beautifull Rosefinches. As yesterday, it was getting very warm again in the afternoon. The consequence was that all bird activity nearly stopped. Therefore, late afternoon we drove back to Maerkang. We had a relaxed evening in the hotel.

Ø        June 6th

We said goodbye to Maerkang. Today our destination was Hongyuan. We left Maerkang at 6.00h.. Just after Shuamalukou, we spend some time for roadside birding. This did not result in many birds. Good ones we saw were Fork-tailed Swift, Rufous-bellied and White-backed Woodpecker, Chestnut Thrush, White-throated Redstart and White-browed Rosefinch. We did not spend too much time here. While driving to the north, the landscape was changing dramatically. The mountains, covered with trees, were replaced by an open, flat landscape with sparse bushes. We arrived at the Tibetan Plateau. In this habitat, there were many new birds to see for us. We took our time and stopped very often to scan the meadows and to walk over the plains. This resulted in seeing Ruddy Shelduck, Black-necked Crane, White-winged Tern, Red-collared Dove, Oriental and Horned Lark, Citrine Wagtail, White-backed Thrush, White-browed Tit-warbler, Dusky Warbler, Yellow-streaked Warbler, Hodgson’s Redstart, Siberian Stonechat, Pere David’s Laughingthrush, Azure-winged and Eurasian Magpie, Daurian Jackdawn and Common Raven.  It was nearly 2 o’clock when we arrived in the hotel, in the centre of Hongyuan. After we checked in, we immediately drove further north of the town. At an open area with low hills, nearly 10 km past of the town, we spend the afternoon. The sky was all open and there was no wind. This resulted in a hot afternoon. As so often in the afternoon, bird activity was low. Birds that passed through our binoculars were Upland Buzzard, Black-necked Crane, Hoopoe, Oriental and Horned Lark, Citrine Wagtail, White-backed Thrush, Pere David’s Laughingthrush, Ground Tit, Daurian Jackdawn, Common Rosefinch, Twite and Godlewski’s Bunting. In the evening, we returned to the hotel for a one-night stay.

Ø        June 7th

When we woke up at 6.00h, it was raining. At 7 o’clock, it stopped raining and we left for the same area that we visited yesterday afternoon. Soon we found a White-browed Tit in the bushes on the hills. Also the Godlewski’s Bunting and a Hoopoe were still present.

After an hour of birdwatching on the hillslopes, we started to drive further north, to Ruoergai. On the road, we spend a lot of time for birdwatching. This resulted in seeing Lammergeier, Upland Buzzard, Golden Eagle, Black-necked Crane, Little Owl, Tibetan, Oriental and Horned Lark, Citrine Wagtail, White-backed Thrush, Black and Hodgson’s Redstart, Siberian Stonechat, Pere David’s Laughingthrush, Ground Tit, Grey-backed Shrike, Black Drongo, Azure-winged and Eurasian Magpie, Daurian Jackdawn and Black-winged Snowfinch. Ruoergai came into view at 14.00h.. Just outside the village, we saw Brown-headed Gulls and Common Terns fouraging at a small pond. Two Rock Petronias were sitting near the road. After checking in in the hotel, we took the road north of Ruoergai. We spend a few hours birdwatching on the planes along this road. The furthest point we drove was +/- 20 km from the village. We saw Himalayan Griffon, Upland Buzzard, Tibetan, Oriental and Horned Lark, Citrine Wagtail, Black and Hodgson’s Redstart, Ground Tit and White-rumped Snowfinch.

Ø        June 8th

Today we spend the whole day birdwatching near Daba Lake. This lake is nearly 50 km north of Ruoergai, on the road to Hongxing. This is the same road as we were on yesterday afternoon. The last 20 km before you reach the lake, are very good for birds. Especially birds of prey were present in good numbers. We spend more time birdwatching along the road today, then on the lake itself. To visit the lake, you have to pay 20 yuan/per person. We did not pay for visiting the lake because it is possible to see most of the bird species from the road. Only the birds on the further parts of the lake are difficult, or even impossible, to identify due to the distance and heat haze.

We walked the long distance from the road to one of the tips of the lake. There were only small numbers of waterbirds present on this place.

Today we saw Great Egret, Black Stork, Greylag Goose, Ruddy Shelduck, Red-crested and Common Pochard, Ferruginous Duck, Gadwall, Northern Pintail, Cinereous Vulture, Upland Buzzard, Steppe Eagle, Saker Falcon, Black-necked Crane, Black-winged Stilt, Common Redshank, Common Greenshank, Brown-headed Gull, Common and Whiskered Tern, Fork-tailed Swift, Tibetan and Horned Lark, Citrine Wagtail, Common Raven, White-rumped Snowfinch and Twite. From the mammals front, 3 Wolves and a Steppe Polecat were very good sightings.

We were back in Ruoergai at 3 o’clock. Much earlier then expected but Erwin got ill during the day. It was even hard for him, just sitting into the car. So we returned to Ruoergai already in the afternoon. While Erwin stayed in bed, Tom and I went to the city to buy some food and to look for an internet café. Ruoergai was one of the few places we had been where it was possible to buy bread. After so many rice meals, it was delicious to eat bread with the choco pasta that we took with us from Belgium. However, we could not convince our driver to taste it. For him it looked strange what we were eating. Not his cup of tea.

Ø     June 9th

At 6.00h, we left for Jiuzhaigou. Our plan was to arrive there in the afternoon. We got a message a few days ago from Mark Van Beirs, that the road to Jiuzhaigou via Baozuomuchang and Chuanzhusi was closed due to roadworks. We had to take the road via Baxi, Yuwa and Heibe. This small road goes over high mountains. Long parts of it are not in concrete but in stones. This makes travelling by this road very slow, surely much slower than by the road via Chuanzhusi, that goes over the plateau, near the mountain range.

Just near Ruoergai we found two Blyth’s Pipits and a Russet Sparrow. A few kilometres from the city, there were 2 small quarries on the left side of the road. On the right, there were meadows boardered with a fence. A pair of Chinese Grey Shrike was sitting on the fence and they had a nest in a bush just near the road. On a wire that was along a meadow between the two querries, we found a Przevalski’s Rosefinch, together with e few Twites. Other birds on this place were Little Owl and Oriental and Horned Skylark. Further, we saw Upland Buzzard, Black Redstart, Siberian Stonechat and Godlewski’s Bunting on the plateau. Very soon after leaving the Ruoergai area, we were driving down from the plateau, back into the mountains. Baxi is the first larger village that you came across while driving into the mountains. The highest pass we passed was well over 3000 meters. I forgot to take note of the exact height. Habitat consists of pine forest with small patches of bamboo on the higher parts. On the lower parts, there are alpine meadows with bushes. Driving through this mountain range was quite productive. The birds we saw between Baxi and the junction  with the main road to Jiuzhaigou (east of the city), were Common Goldeneye, Hoopoe, Black Woodpecker, Olive-backed Pipit, White-throated Dipper, Chestnut and White-backed Thrush, Tickell’s Leaf-warbler, Buff-barred Warbler, Hodgson’s and White-throated Redstart, Pere David’s and Elliot’s Laughingthrush, Sichuan Jay, Daurian Jackdawn, Carrion and White-collared Crow, Pink-rumped and White-browed Rosefinch and White-winged Grosbeak.

In Jiuzhaigou, we stayed in the Ming Shan Hotel, one of the smaller hotels, nearly 500 metres west of the entrance of the park.

Once our luggage was in our room, we went out for birdwatching. It was already after five, so we did not have the time to go far from the hotel. We decided to explore a hill, on the same side of the road as the park, a few hundreds metres more to the west of our hotel. Birding on the steep hill brought us Spectacled Fulvetta as the best bird. In addition, we found Oriental Turtle-dove, Fork-tailed Swift, Grey-headed Canary-flycatcher, Elliot’s Laughingthrush, Coal Tit, Snowy-browed Nuthatch and Brown Shrike.

Ø     June 10th

At 7.00h, we were at the entrance of the park. It was calm at the ticket office, we were one of the first visitors of the day. We took the first bus that drove into the park. We got out of the bus at the junction near Zechawa village. The first thing we did was searching for accommodation. The first woman that we ask for it was already the right one. She had a small former hotel and we could stay there. We were not the only guests. There were many roadworks going on in the park and the roadworkers were staying in this hotel as well. We had the last room available. Near the village we saw Ring-necked Pheasant, Red-collared Dove, Chestnut Thrush, Large-billed Leaf-warbler, White-throated Redstart, Elliot’s Laughingthrush, Grey-backed Shrike and White-browed Rosefinch.

At 8.15h, everything was arranged and we were ready to go birdwatching. We walk one hour to Kezegou Valley, were we stayed the rest of the day.

As soon as we entered the trail, we heard our first Rufous-headed Robin. Despite waiting and searching for some time, the bird did not come into view. We gave up and tried it further up the trail, where another male was singing. We climbed up the rocks, the bird was singing in dense bushes higher up the slope. Our climbing and waiting was productive. The bird was sometimes singing just near us. Still in dense cover but at a moment we saw a female flying in the bushes and a few moments later, a male was singing right in front of us. It was close but still a little bit covered by the leaves, but we had satisfaying views.

Finally, we heard another four Rufous-headed Robins. Other birds we saw in Kezegou Valley were Long-tailed Minivet, Chestnut Thrush, Chinese and Blyth’s Leaf-warbler, Bianchi’s Warbler, Slaty-backed Flycatcher, Chinese Blue-(throated) Flycatcher, Indian Blue Robin, Red-flanked Bluetail, Pere David’s, Coal, Rufous-vented, Yellow-bellied and Grey-crested Tit and Snowy-browed Nuthatch.

Ø        June 11th

At 6.00h, we left for Long Lake. The owner of the place we stayed drove us until Upper Seasonal Lake. He told us that this was a good place for Blue Eared-pheasant. Soon after first light, we saw our first Blue Eared-pheasant in the dried up Upper Seasonal Lake. After a while, five of this beautiful pheasants came into view. A Chinese Thrush was fouraging just in front of us. We said goodbye to the driver and walked further up to Long Lake. We heard a Sukatchev’s Laughingthrush calling in the dense, low vegetation just near the road. It stopped calling very soon and the bird was probably gone.In fact we could not find it. We walked further and after half an hour, we arrived at the parking place near Long Lake. Like the former days, the weather was very good and this resulted in good bird activity in the morning. A Sukatchev’s Laughingthrush was one of the first birds we saw at the parking lot. It was just hopping around, together with a few Elliot’s Laughingthrushes. Two other Sukatchev’s were observed also. A good place for these birds I suppose. Most of the birds near Long Lake were usual to people, so they were very tame. We saw Oriental Turtle-dove, Fork-tailed Swift, Chestnut Thrush, Hume’s Warbler, Blyth’s Leaf-warbler, Bianchi’s Warbler, Siberian and Slaty-backed Flycatcher, White-throated Redstart, Songar, Pere David’s, Coal and Rufous-vented Tit, Vinaceous and White-browed Rosefinch, Grey-headed Bullfinch and White-winged Grosbeak. At 8.30h, the first busses started to arrive. Long Lake is one of the most popular places in the park and it was soon overcrowded. We walked down on the boardwalk (everywhere available in the park) to the first bus stop. At 10.00h, we drove down to the junction near Zechawa. We walked further down along the boardwalk to Rhinoceros Lake. Here we stayed for a few hours and then we took another bus to Reed Lake. From Reed Lake, we walk backed to Shuzhengs Lakes. In the evening, we took one of the last busses that were driving up. We got out at the junction again and spent the last hour of daylight, birdwatching near the village. At the lower parts, from Zechawa to Reed Lake, we saw Mallard, Long-tailed Minivet, Chestnut Thrush, Blyth’s Leaf-warbler, Siberian and Ferruginous Flycatcher, Indian Blue Robin, Sooty, Yellow-bellied, Great and Green-backed Tit, Eurasian and White-browed Nuthatch, Grey-backed Shrike, White-winged Grosbeak and much unexpected for us on this place, Slaty Bunting.

Ø     June 12th

At 4.00h, we were ready to drive to Primeval Forest. The owner of the hotel was our driver again. We wanted to be at Primeval Forest very early to try for Pere David’s Owl. We had bad luck with the weather. It was raining and the fog was very dense. This was not the best type of weather to search for the owl. It was already getting light when the rain stopped. We walked on the boardwalk at Primeval Forest. Best birds we found were a few Three-banded Rosefinches. Soon the first tourists started to arrive. Time for us to leave the scene. We took the trail that starts behind the toilets at Primeval Forest. This trail is easy to find. It is not indicated as it is not allowed to go there. This trail is going through very good forest. We followed it for just more than a kilometre. When we were back in Belgium, we heard that Bram Demeulemeester saw a pair of Pere David’s Owls along this trail after 5 kilometres. Bram was in the park in the same periode as we were, but we did not meet him there. He saw the owls during the day. We dipped the owl but saw many other birds like Blood Pheasant, Eurasian Three-toed Woodpecker, Maroon-backed Accentor, Sichuan and Chinese Leaf-warbler, Asian Brown Flycatcher, Rufous-vented Tit, Eurasian Treecreeper, Three-banded and White-browed Rosefinch and Tibetan Serin. Early afternoon we went back to the parking at Primeval Forest. Noisy Chinese took the place. Time for us to take the first available bus and to go back to Zechawa. We collected our luggage and took another bus, out of the park. In Ming Shan Hotel, we met our driver again and soon we were ready to go to Gongangling Pass. The afternoon seemed to be not the best time to be here. Black Kite, Siberian Flycatcher, White-throated and Blue-fronted Redstart and Chestnut Thrush were nearly the only species we saw.

We returned to Jiuzhaigou very soon. We passed the last hours of the day on the hillsides outside the park, in search for Spectacled Parrotbill. We failed and not many birds were seen.

Ø     June 13th

The day started early again but rain crossed our plans. It was already 10 o’clock before it stopped raining. Our half day for the last search for Spectacled Parrotbill was reduced to just a few hours. We went to the hillsides east of the entrance of Jiuzhaigou Park. The birds we found were Eurasian Buzzard, Ring-necked Pheasant, Yellow-streaked Warbler, Elliot’s Laughingthrush, Vinaceous, Three-banded and White-browed Rosefinch. But no parrotbills. It was already after noon and it was really time to go. We still had to do a long drive to Dujiangyan today. This city is near Qingchen Shan and near Chengdu.

Indeed it was a long and from time to time dangerous drive. Especially passing by trucks and busses on the small roads in the mountains was precarious. There was hardly time for birdwatching. From the car, we noticed Blue Rock-thrush, Hodgson’s and White-throated Redstart, Yellow-billed Cough and Godlewski’s Bunting. At a petrol station, two Russet Sparrows were seen.

In the evening, Tcha was getting tired and rain also made driving more dangerous. It was clear that it was not possible to reach Dujiangyan today. We decided to search a hotel in Yingxiu.

Ø     June 14th

At 6.00h, we left Yingxiu for Qingchen Shan. We had still one hour and a half to drive before we arrived at the site. This was the first area with lowland forest that we visited. This gave us a chance of seeing species that we did not have seen before during this holiday. We spend our time at the entrance road to the monastery and at the entrance itself. We did not go into the area behind the entrance gate. An entrance fee has to be paid for entering the trail to the monastery. Target bird here was Brown-rumped Minivet. We scanned the canopy for a few hours but our efforts were fruitless. Birds we saw were Red-rumped Swallow, Collared Finchbill, Light-vented, Mountain and Black Bulbul, Sulphur-breasted Warbler, Grey-headed Canary-flycatcher, White-browed Laughingthrush, Streak-breasted Scimitar-babbler, Grey-cheeked Fulvetta, Vinous-throated Parrotbill, Black-throated, Yellow-bellied, Great and Green-backed Tit, JapaneseWhite-eye, Black-naped Oriole, Hair-crested Drongo, Eurasian Jay and Red-billed Blue Magpie. At noon, we gave up searching for the Minivet.

We drove to Chengdu. On a wire along the road to Chengdu, we saw a Red-billed Starling. We jumped out of the car at a busy crossroad and went after the starlings. They flew into an orchard. Soon we found them back while they were sitting on the wires again. We counted three of them. In the orchards, we found also lots of Eurasian Blackbirds and a few Oriental Magpie-robins.

When we arrived in Chengdu, we went to the bank and finally, we could change money. At the parking place of the bank, there was a White-browed Laughingthrush. We paid Tcha and while he was bringing the money to Mr. Sam, we went to Du Fu Cottage.

This is a small park in Chengdu. It seems to be the only reliable place during a Sichuan trip to see Yellow-billed Grosbeaks. It took a while but we found the Grosbeaks. Two males and a female were fouraging in the higher trees near the main entrance. Other birds we saw in Du Fu Cottage were Oriental Magpie-robin, White-browed Laughingthrush, Streak-breasted Scimitar-babbler, Rufous-capped Babbler, Vinous-throated Parrotbill, Black-throated Tit and JapaneseWhite-eye. We stayed an hour in the park and then we drove back to the south, to Emei Shan. We left Chengdu at 16.30h and we were in Emei Shan at 18.40h. We stayed in Bao Guo at the base of Emei Shan. We checked in at Nathan’s Hotel.

Ø        June 15th

Just a 200 metres from Nathan’s place, is the bus station. Busses are leaving here for the top. Half way to the top, they stop at a ticket office. This is the place where you can buy entrance tickets. Buying them at the bus station in Bao Guo is not possible. We took a bus at 6.10 h.. It was already 8.30h when we arrived at Leidongping. This is the highest place the buses go. To go to the highest top, Golden Summit, you have to take a cable car. We did not go to Golden Summit but we started the walk down immediately. We walked very slowly, searching for birds. There was no reason to be in a hurry, we had 2 days to go down the 20+ kilometres. Via Xixiangchi and Huayan Peak, our end point for the day was Chudian Palace. From Leidongping we saw a few Speckled Wood-pigeons. We were just a few hundreds metres on the trail, we we heard a Scaly-breasted Wren-babbler. We located the bird very quickly. Lots of photographs could be made. Not far from this spot, a Chestnut-headed Tesia was taped out. The bird stayed in the bamboo most of the time but we succeeded to have good views. During the rest of the day we observed Chinese Bamboo-partridge (HO), Lady Amherst’s Pheasant (HO), White-throated Needletail, Crimson-breasted Woodpecker, Long-tailed Minivet, Mountain and Black Bulbul, Brownish-flanked and Aberrant Bush-warbler, Large-billed and Blyth’s Leaf-warbler, Siberian Flycatcher, Slaty-blue and Verditer Flycatcher, Fujian Niltava, Moustached and Elliot’s Laughingthrush, Streak-breasted Scimitar-babbler, Red-billed Leiothrix, Golden-breasted and Streak-throated Fulvetta, White-collared Yuhina, Brown and Golden Parrotbill, Coal, Grey-crested, Green-backed and Yellow-browed Tit, Gould’s Sunbird and Vinaceous Rosefinch.

It was almost five when we arrived at Chudian Palace. We kept on birdwatching near the small monastery until dark. After we had lunch, made by the monks, we searched for owls. We already heard three Oriental Scops-owls calling along the trail down the monastery. We succeed to entice the bird and soon we saw it in the spotlight of our torches. A Grey Nightjar was calling in the distance. We slept in a small room in the monastery.

Ø        June 16th

At 5.00h, we were awakened by the drumming monks. A special way to wake up. We left Chudian Palace at 6.10h. We walked further down to Wangnian Temple, Bailong Cave, Qingyin Pavilion and Wuxian-gang Park, the endpoint of the trail. It was once again a good birdwatching day. Chinese Bamboo-partridge (HO), Lady Amherst’s Pheasant, Wedge-tailed Pigeon, Collared Owlet, Himalayan Swiftlet, Fork-tailed Swift, Long-tailed Minivet, Light-vented and Black Bulbul, Grey-winged Blackbird, Sulphur-breasted Warbler, Brown-breasted and Blue-throated Flycatcher, Fujian Niltava, Moustached Laughingthrush, Hwamei, Streak-breasted Scimitar-babbler, Green Shrike-babbler, Streak-throated, Dusky and Grey-cheeked Fulvetta, Black-chinned Yuhina, Yellow-bellied and Green-backed  Tit, Eurasian Nuthatch, Japanese White-eye and Hair-crested Drongo were noticed. We saw the Blue-throated Flycatchers near Wangnian Temple. A few males were singing here.

At 17.40h we were down at Wuxian-gang, were we took the bus to Bao Guo.

Ø     June 17th

Our last birdwatching day. We visited the area between Bao Guo and Fuhu Temple. We walked along the main road and further up along a paved trail along a small stream. In the trees behind the statue of  Emei Shan, we found a couple of Brown-rumped Minivets. A real surprise to find these birds here. We managed to find a few other new species for our trip list. These were Black Baza, Common Kingfisher, Fork-tailed Sunbird, Fire-breasted Flowerpecker, Tiger Shrike and White-rumped Munia. Other birds that were there are Chinese Bamboo-partridge, Asian Brown Flycatcher, Slaty-backed Forktail, Hwamei, White-browed Laughingthrush and  Black-throated Tit. Before noon, we were back in the hotel. It was time to go.

Just outside Bao Guo, we stopped near a lake and a few fishponds. Here we saw the last species for our trip list, a Little Ringed Plover. On our way to Chengdu, a Crested Myna was seen.

At 14.00h, we were in Chengdu. We stayed at Sam’s Guesthouse.

Ø     June 18th

At 9.00h, we had our domestic flight to Beijing. Tcha brought us to the airport. In Beijing, our flight home was at 13.00h. After a smooth flight, we arrived in Paris at 17.30h. Then it was still a long way home so it was close to midnight when we arrived there.

Birds

During this trip, we observed 309 species. Two of them, Grey Nightjar and (Himalayan) Tawny Owl, were only heard. Also on this list but not counted by us was a dead Little Forktail, found on the top of Wawu Shan.

For taxonomy we followed the checklist by J.F. Clements (2000), completed with the updates until December 2005. You can find these updates at http://www.ibispub.com/updates.html

Nowadays taxonomy is changing rapidly and in a few occasions, these changes are not (yet?) implemented in the Clements checklist. In these cases, you will find more at the relevant species or group. Especially the taxonomy in Phylloscopus and Seicercus warblers is probably going to change drastically, see the article written by Frank E. Rheindt (BirdingAsia number 5 – June 2006).

Martens described a new species in the Golden-spectacled complex as Seicercus omeiensis. This new species is named Martens’s Warbler by F. Rheindt. This Seicercus-warbler inhabits fairly high altitudes above most of the other members of the complex in western and northern Chinese mountains, but it is always found below Bianchi’s Warbler in elevational chain.

The Golden-spectacled complex contains eight species in the Birding Asia article and further investigations are likely to add more species to the group. These eight species belonged to three former loosely associated species, Grey-cheeked S. poliogenys, White-spectacled S. affinis and Golden-spectacled Warbler S. burkii. The eight species are:

·        Bianchi’s Warbler S. valentini

·        Whistler’s Warbler S. whistleri

·        Alström’s Warbler S. soror

·        Martens’s Warbler S. omeiensis

·        Grey-crowned Warbler S. tephrocephalus

·        Green-crowned Warbler S. burkii

·        Grey-cheeked Warbler S. poliogenys

·        White-spectacled Warbler S. affinis

Martens’s Warbler is not yet included in the Clements list, even so is the complete above taxonomic systematic.
