Istria, North Croatia August 1st-13th, 2012

  • Having booked a family holiday to Porec I found it extremely difficult to find any information on birding sites in this region of Croatia.... In the event, I was pleasantly surprised by both the relative availability of birds and by several good sites that I managed to locate within a 30-40 minute drive from Porec...Chris Stott reports.

Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia 4-10 May 2008

  • A last minute.com holiday to Croatia with my wife resulted in some enjoyable if not brief birding.  Trips to Montenegro and Bosnia were interesting with a few good birds seen; however there was only one possible target bird, which was Rock Partridge...Mark Easterbrook reports.

Croatia 9th-15th October 2006

  • We decided to return to the partridge spot. I parked the car at the same place and we walked up the road to the second layby on the right (just before the junction). We heard the birds call somewhere on the hill slope above us, on the north side of the road, but could not see them. Suddenly a flock of 9 Rock Partridge appeared and flew along the slope...Bob and Dora Swann report

Croatia & Slovenia, Birds and Butterflies July 15 - August 1, 2005

  • This summer we decided to enjoy our holidays in Slovenia and Croatia. We are interested in birds, but also butterflies, dragonflies and hoverflies....Sander Bot reports

Some Useful bird books for Croatia:
Do you have a good book for this region that we haven't featured? let us know

Collins "Birds" A complete guide to all British and European Species
Dominic Couzens: Buy from: Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk

  • A superb coffee table table sized, photographic companion to Collins' own equally excellent European Field Guide. Dominic Couzens is to be congratulated on his clear and informative writing style. He brings the birds alive in a way that a field guide simply doesn't have space to do. There is much to learn in this book even for the most avid of birders. I shall be dipping in for weeks to come.

Collins Bird Guide
Lars Svensson et al: Buy from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk

  • Described by some as the best field guide in the world, and 15 years in the making. Has it been Worth the Wait?...Yes definately! If you buy just 1 book a year then make sure that its this one. Stunning drawings by the worlds finest bird illustrators..and it shows..check out the plates on tern, Skuas, and the Ducks...not forgetting the Finches and Crossbills...Includes all the birds likely to be seen in Slovenia

The Complete Guide to the Birdlife of Britain & Europe
Rob Hume, Peter Hayman (Illustrator): Buy from Amazon.co.uk

  • This is quite simply the best illustrated guide to Europe's birds that I have seen. Every bird is pictured at least five times (and sometimes twenty times) in varying poses within its habitat. Seeing the birds in context, really gives this book the edge.
More than a field guide, the book is coffee table size, and certainly deserves to be in the collection of every serious bird watcher.

Recommended travel books for Croatia:

Croatia (Bradt Travel Guides)
Piers Letcher:
Buy from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk

  • This guide to Croatia is the most detailed, comprehensive and above all readable guide to the country. It gives not just all the things you'd expect from a guidebook -- when to go, where to stay, what to eat and drink, what to see, how to get around, and how much it's all going to cost -- but also provides amusing and thought-provoking insights and anecdotes about Croatia, its culture and people, and its history. This is the one book you should have with you when planning a trip to Croatia. Highly recommended
