Fiji March 3-11, 2008

  • We visited the islands of Taveuni, Kadavu and Viti Levu in Fiji between March 3 and 11, 2008.  It was a successful trip, seeing all but one of the birds we hoped to find, and making up for that with one species we had not expected to see (Pacific Imperial-Pigeon)...Murray Lord and Chris Gladwin report.

Fiji 28 July to 11 August 2007

  • The garden is an excellent place to spot many of the birds for which we had come, including masked shining parrots, barking pigeons and a giant forest honeyeater (which turned out to be the only one I saw the whole trip). Of course I was itching to get out into the forest itself....Israel Didham reports.

Fiji 27th Nov - 5th Dec. 2004

  • There are no endemic bird families on Fiji although the odd Silktail is most unusual and has uncertain affinities. There are about 25 endemics although some of these are extinct and others only occur on very distant offshore islands which are difficult or time consuming to visit. Pigeons are particularly well represented with some stunning fruit-doves.....Paul Noakes reports.

Fiji Feb 2003

  • My wife Miho and I, recently returned from a birding trip to Fiji. We closely followed the route of Neil Money. I will not duplicate his information here, but do want to pass on some additional information on Suva and Taveuni to aid other people who might make this interesting journey....Chuck Pell reports.

Fiji (Viti Levu, Koro and Taveuni) October 2002

  • We visited the above islands for a two-week holiday of which birdwatching was a large but by no mean sole purpose. Unfortunately unseasonable weather dogged our journey around the islands with only a few days without significant wind and rain. These conditions made birdwatching difficult, sometimes impossible, and probably account for the low species numbers by comparison with other trip reports....Diana Lauzi & Chris Lloyd report

Fiji 10th to 27th June 2002

  • The prime reason for the trip was birding, but we wished to give ourselves sufficient time to appreciate other aspects of Fiji life. On a trip of only three weeks, including travelling time to and from Fiji, we decided that we could do this best, and maximise the number of potential species to be seen, by concentrating on the three islands of Viti Levu, Taveuni and Kadavu. We divided our time on Viti Levu equally between the east and the west, but did not included the northern forests, so we gave ourselves little chance of seeing Red-throated Lorikeet and Pink-billed Parrotfinch...Neil Money reports

Fiji 26th Aug - 9th Sept. 2000

  • This morning I drove to a bridge 9km after Nausori village and this was to prove to be a very good move as within a couple of minutes I had seen two of my most wanted species, the Giant Forest Honeyeater and the Golden Dove...TonyClarke reports

A Field Guide to the Birds of Hawaii and the Tropical Pacific

  • Pratt, Bruner, and Dickinson have produced a superb field guide completely covering all the islands of the tropical Pacific from Hawai'i west through Micronesia. This is a true field guide: it gives the field marks of every species, notes problems in identification with special emphasis on distinguishing similar species, and wastes no space on matters not related to identification.

Birds of the Solomons, Vanuatu & New Caledonia
Helm Field Guides: Buy from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk

  • Situated in the Southwest Pacific, this region boasts a colourful and intriguing range of birds. Of the 362 species covered, 117 are endemics. The colour plates in this guide which is primarily intended for field use depict every species, showing plumages, races and colour morphs, and there are 340 colour distribution maps. The facing-page layout, with colour plates opposite the relevant species descriptions, makes at-a-glace reference easy for anyone interested in the birdlife of the Pacific
