The Gambia 4th TO 15th Oct 2002,

Author

NEIL MONEY

INTRODUCTION

This was my wife Diana's and my second visit to The Gambia, 0ur previous visit being in November 2001. This year we chose to go in the first half of October to catch the end of the rainy season, which ends at the end of the month. It is surprising the difference that six weeks makes at that time of the year. Some species that last year where in non-breeding plumage were still in full breeding plumage and some species were in greater abundance. In the event the rain was not an inconvenience. On the coast we had some rain free days and when it did rain it was mainly during the afternoons and was quickly over.

TRAVEL AND TRAVEL AGENTS

As last year, from our home on the north coast of Scotland we had a three hours car journey to Inverness for a flight to London Gatwick and an overnight stay at the Le Meridian Hotel at Gatwick. The Hotel is not the cheapest but with an early morning check in and a mid-night return we felt the convenience justified the cost.

For the flights to and accommodation in The Gambia again we booked through The Gambia Experience, a specialist UK travel agent. They gave us excellent service and have a policy of trying to maximise the benefits of tourism in the country by employing local representatives and supporting the local economy through a designated trust. Contact details are: Kingfisher House, Rownhams Lane, North Baddesley, Hampshire, SO52 9LP; telephone: (+44) 023 8073 0888; web site: www.gambia.co.uk

Holidays to The Gambia

We chose to return to the Senegambia Hotel because of the extensive mature gardens. We improved on the 40 species we recorded in the garden last year with 55 species this year, some seen only in the gardens. Many of the birds were confiding and provided good photo opportunities. We ate at the hotel or at the nearby Al Basha, an excellent Lebanese restaurant.

We spent three nights away from the Senegambia when we travelled to the interior, staying one night in Basse and two nights at Tendaba Camp. At Basse we stayed at the Jem Hotel, which offered clean but basic accommodation and reasonable food. Basse is a reliable site for Egyptian Plover (we saw 20) and enables a visit to Bansang Quarry (GSP: N13.26.261 W14.31.887) for Red-throated Be-eater. Two nights spent at Tendaba enables early morning starts for Kiang West National Park and a boat trip across the river to the creeks on the north side.

BIRD GUIDES

To get the best benefit out of birding The Gambia the use of a guide at some stage during a visit is essential. But care needs to be taken when employing a guide, as although, there are some excellent guides available, there are also people offering guiding services who have very little experience or knowledge. If the guide is unknown then employing then for a half day trip will soon reveal whether or not they are competent.

Once again we used Baba Bah who is an established guide and an excellent birder. He has lectured on ornithology and eco-tourism on Government courses for official Tourist Guides and can hold his own against anyone on his own turf. I do not recommend self-drive rental cars in The Gambia, especially if trips away from the coastal area are planned, as the roads are not in a good state of repair. Through Baba we again arranged to use Lamin Conteh as our driver. Lamin is reliable and a good safe driver.  Contact details for Baba are: C/o PMB 513, Serrekunda, The Gambia, Tel: 902523, Fax: 06220 465544.

INFORMATION, BOOKS AND MAPS

We used:

A Field Guide to the Birds of the Gambia and Senegal
Clive Barlow, Tony Disley: Buy from Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com

  • This field guide covers the area of the Gambia, a country which is very popular with a large number of birders. The Gambia shelters many migrants from the Western Palaearctic, from September to April, as well as having a significant list of resident West African birds. The guide also covers Senegal, which almost entirely surrounds The Gambia...
