A Report from birdtours.co.uk

Guatemala Security warning: (and solution?),

These messages arrived in my inbox in early January 2001:

Message 1

This is a quick message to alert you to a recent armed attack on birdwatchers in Guatemala. Over the new year two friends of mine were birdwatching in the small forest reserve of BIOTOPO CERRO CAHUI close to the village of El Remate on the road between Flores and Tikal in Peten, Guatemala. They were held up by four armed men and during the robbery one of my friends was shot in the back and is now paralysed. This is absolutely shocking news, I visited Cerro Cahui in February 1998, it has been regarded as a safe area, but obviously for the time being it would seem that the reserve is off limits.

Please pass this message on to any birders you receive enquiries from about birding in Guatemala.

Regards
Dave Gandy

Message 2:

We at the Guatemalan Birding Resource Center have been out of the office for the weekend, guiding for a group of U.S. birders, and were unable to take part in the "Guatemala Safety" debate [on Birdchat].....

What we have done at GBRC is to identify sites that are safe, and productive birding areas. Our saftey record is not a fluke! If you visit Guatemala please contact us and we can help you out with either: our opinion about current saftey of the sites you want to visit, or setting up a birding tour. See our website for more information:

I hope that this helps people considering visiting Guatemala - if you come you will not be disappointed!!! Good Birding!
