Nameri National Park 8/4/2001 - 9/4/2001

Trip arranged by Maan & Manyu Barua of Gawuhati. Local Guide was Sri Polash Borah, contactable through Wildgrass.
Sat 31/03 arrived Gawuhati, drove to Kaziranga.
Sun 1/04 5.30am - 8 am Tea Garden; 9.30 -12 noon Kaziranga, Central Track to Daphlang; pm Kohora to Daphlang then west to Kerasin and back to Kathpora.
Mon 2/04 5.30 - 6.30 am. Elephant Ride near Kohora. 8.45 - 11.30 am Central Track Daphlang to Kerasin and then Kathpora. 2pm - 6.15 pm Eastern Track to Debeswari Chapori.
Tues 3/04 5.30 am to Panbari Forest. Guard did not turn up, so could only walk around edge. 2-5 pm to Western Track. Dunga and Bahubeel Circuit.
Wed, 4/04 5.30 - 8 am Tea Garden. 9-11.15 Waiting (in vain) for Pied Falconet on edge of Panbari. 1-6 pm Eastern Trail to Debeswari Chapori.
Thurs 5/04 to Panbari. Hot. pm Kohora - Daphlang Circuit.
Fri 6/4 5.15 am to edge of Panbari in another vain attempt at Pied Falconet. 10-12 Western Trail . Baguri Circuit. Hot and not very productive. 4-6 pm Tea Gardens.
Sat 7/4 5.30 - 8.00 am Tea Gardens, then drove to Nameri National Park.

Jerdon's Babbler Chrysomma altirostre pm on Debeswari Chapori 1 S. Outstanding views in response to tape.  along edge of second grassy avenue to right after enter tall reeds on Debeswari Chapori.
Striated Babbler Turdoides earlei 1 S Tea Garden (earlei). 3/4 Panbari Forest 2 S with young. 4/04 pm Eastern Trail on Debeswari Chapori 6 S. 5/4 am Panbari Forest 3 S.
Black-breasted Parrotbill Paradoxornis flavirostris pm on Debeswari Chapori 2 S. Wonderfully responsive to tape.  In reeds on left about 50 metres past 2nd grassy avenue into reeds where Jerdon's Babbler seen.

Yellow Weaver Ploceus megarhynchus pm Western Trail. In area known for this species, not long after start of circuit trail.  Single bird in non-breeding plumage but very large bill and larger size than Baya Weaver seen shortly before and after.
White-rumped Munia Lonchura striata early am Tea Garden ca 6 in company with Scaly-breasted Munias. pm Eastern Trail 2 S.
Scaly-breasted Munia Lonchura punctulata Tea Garden common (subundulata). 4/04 early am Tea Garden large flock.
Southern Black-headed Munia Lonchura atricapilla early am Tea Garden many seen.

Elephant ride 700/- per seat per hour. I paid 800/- to have the elephant to myself. This is the best way to see the Bengal Florican unless you can get to Debeswari Chapori, which requires special permission from the director.

All up Kaziranga and everything except the Eco campat Mameri cost me US$500 including transport in Calcutta to and from the hotel and hotel overnight.
3 nights at the Eco camp at Nameri (full Board) cost 4300/- = CA us$92.
