Trip report in brief
Two of my friends (Hans Matheve and Maarten Schurmans)
were doing a 2 month tour of Sumatra, Java, Bali, Sulawesi and Halmahera and
I decided to join them for the Wallacean part of the trip.
The trip was rather eventful, with quite a few delays and inconveniences throughout,
but still produced a good list of endemics and otherwise excellent birds.
Although Halmahera has been off limits for a few years (heavy fighting from 2000-2002), the situation has calmed down and it is now perfectly safe to visit again.
02/08 to 03/08 Flight to Jakarta and Manado
I flew from Brussels through Frankfurt and Singapore to Jakarta and back, with Lufthansa, for 880,59 euro. No surprises. Spent the night in Jakarta at a friend's place who works there, less than a mile from the Marriott hotel which was about to be bombed 36 hours later.
04/08 Flight Jakarta - Manado with Merpati - drive to Tangkoko
Very early morning flight with Merpati to Manado (stopover in Ujung Pandang). Flight was on time and fairly cheap (1.695.000 rupiahs for a return flight, at an exchange rate of approximately 1/10000, so about 170 euro). I had booked this flight in advance over the Internet (www.merpati.co.id). It's not possible to pay in advance so it's probably best to reconfirm a few times. The price was actually less than the quoted price that I received through my Internet booking.
Met with Hans and Maarten in Manado and chartered
a car to take us to Tangkoko. Transport in general is usually fairly easy
to get - bemo's, chartered cars, . are all readily available but expect to
pay 10 times more than the locals.
Arrived in Tangkoko in late afternoon. We immediately met Untu who was offering
to guide us. Freddy also accompanied us on some trips. Guiding prices were
not cheap but were at least partially worth their money. Did some initial
birding and owling, producing Barred Buttonquail, Sulawesi Hawk-Eagle,
Golden-mantled Racquet-Tail (heard only), Sulawesi Scops-Owl, Sulawesi
Hanging-Parrot, Green-backed Kingfisher, White-rumped Cuckoo-Shrike, and
Rainbow Bee-eater.
05/08 Tangkoko - hike up Gunung Tangkoko in afternoon
Early morning birding in Tangkoko around the clearing
and in the forest. In the afternoon, we hiked up Gunung Tangkoko and spent
the night on the mountain in order to be able to see the higher altitude specialities
on the next morning.
Birds observed today were Sulawesi Serpent-Eagle, Isabelline Bush-Hen,
Spotted Harrier, Gray-cheeked Pigeon, White-faced Cuckoo-Dove, Ornate Lorikeet,
Yellowish-breasted Racquet-tail, Azure-rumped Parrot, Black-naped Fruit-Dove,
Bay CoucalOchre-bellied Hawk-Owl (heard at Gunung Tangkoko), Sulawesi
Scops Owl (stunning views), Lilac Kingfisher, Purple-winged Roller,
Sulawesi Hornbill, Knobbed Hornbill, Sulawesi Woodpecker, Ashy Woodpecker,
Pied Cuckoo-Shrike, Sulawesi Cuckoo-Shrike, White-rumped Triller, Golden-headed
Cisticola, Sulawesi Babbler, Black-crowned White-eye, White-breasted Woodswallow,
White-necked Myna, Finch-billed Myna. Also some feral Sooty-headed Bulbuls
which I'll stop mentioning from now on.
06/08 Gunung Tangkoko - walk down in the afternoon
After a less-cold-than-expected night on top of the mountain, we were rather disappointed because there was too much wind on top of the volcano. As a result we missed a few specialities, like Fiery-browed Starling and Citrine Canary-Flycatcher. Luckily, our experienced guides were successful in locating a Scaly Kingfisher, our main target species which we saw well but rather short.
Other (new) species observed were Rufous-bellied Eagle (2 immature birds at the clearing), White-bellied Imperial Pigeon (heard and briefly seen in flight only), and House Swift.
07/08 Tangkoko - drive to Manado
A final birding morning at Tangkoko was very productive: we saw Orange-footed Scrubfowl and Rusty-backed Thrush. Unfortunately there was still no sign of Red-bellied Pitta.
In the afternoon we drove to Manado to sort out our
flight to Ternate, as we wanted to visit the Moluccas next. On the 4th,
we had been told that Ternate airport was closed because the volcano of Ternate
had been active recently, and there was too much ashes on the runway ! We
had been advised to call in again later during the week to see if the situation
had improved. Unfortunately, it hadn't and the airport was still not operating.
While we were considering backup plans (visiting Dumoga Bone, taking the boat
to Ternate, etc etc), Maarten glimpsed at a map of the Moluccas and spotted
another small airport on Halmahera called Kao. After inquiring, it turned
out that some of the flights to Ternate had been rerouted to Kao - those helpful
Merpati people had forgotten to tell us that. Oh good.
Anyway, 20 minutes later, we had tickets to Kao (440000 rupiahs or 44 euro one way), with take-off the next day at 7AM.
08/08 Flight to Kao cancelled, day at Nusantara Diving Centre
After waiting several long hours at Manado airport for our plane to depart, we got told that the flight was cancelled and that we had to come back the day after. Nice. We decided to go to one of the diving centres near Manado, and spend a day around there. The mangroves produced a few nice birds, i.e. Purple Heron, Striated Heron, Rufous Night-Heron (one juvenile), Wandering Whistling-Duck, Gray-tailed Tattler, Pink-necked Pigeon, Golden-bellied Gerygone (Flyeater), Asian Glossy Starling, and Nutmeg Mannikin.
09/08 Flight to Kao, drive to Tobelo
After another few hours of delay, we finally flew to Kao. This was the smallest airport we'd ever seen, basically it was just a small airstrip with a delapidated shack as an office. We chartered a car and drove to Tobelo, hoping to be able to find Demianus Bagali, aka Anu, the only bird guide on Halmahera. It didn't take long before we met someone who knew him, and a bit later we stopped at his brother's house. He took us to a coconut plantation where Anu was working. Not much birding today, only a Willie Wagtail.
10/08 - 12/08 Labi Labi
At 4AM in the morning, we got in a very small boat that took us all the way across Kao Bay, a trip of about 3 hours. There was a bit of surf, and given the size of the boat this caused quite a lot of splash. As a result some of our luggage was quite wet. We saw our first Brown Booby during the crossing. After a warm welcome by the people in Labi Labi, we hiked through the forest until we reached Anu's plantation.
The next three days we stayed in the little huts in the middle of the forest and birded the surrounding area. Birds observed were Pacific Baza, Variable Goshawk, Rufous-necked Sparrowhawk (heard only), Dusky Scrubfowl, Nicobar Pigeon, Scarlet-breasted Fruit-Dove, Superb Fruit-Dove, Blue-capped Fruit-Dove, Gray-headed Fruit-Dove, White-eyed Imperial-Pigeon, Cinnamon-bellied Imperial-Pigeon, Pied Imperial-Pigeon, White Cockatoo, Violet-necked Lory, Chattering Lory, Red-flanked Lorikeet, Red-cheeked Parrot, Great-billed Parrot, Eclectus Parrot, Moluccan King-Parrot, Moluccan Hanging-Parrot, Goliath Coucal, Moluccan Scops-Owl (heard only), Moluccan Hawk-Owl, Moluccan Owlet-Nightjar, Moustached Treeswift, Blue-and-white Kingfisher, Common Paradise-Kingfisher, Dollarbird, Blyth's Hornbill, Ivory-breasted Pitta, Moluccan Cuckoo-Shrike, White-bellied Cuckoo-Shrike, Halmahera Cuckoo-Shrike, Cicadabird, Rufous-bellied Triller, Golden Bulbul, White-naped Monarch, Spectacled Monarch, Moluccan Flycatcher, Shining Flycatcher, Golden Whistler, Drab Whistler, Flame-breasted Flowerpecker, Cream-throated White-eye, Dusky Myzomela, White-streaked Friarbird, Halmahera Oriole, Spangled Drongo, Paradise-crow, Wallace's Standardwing, Longbilled Crow, Metallic Starling and Moluccan Starling.
The weather was usually good in the morning, but often there was heavy rain in the afternoon.
13/08 - 14/08 Foli
Anu strongly advised us to visit another site we had
never heard of before, called Foli. This is a small village about 2 hours
south of Labi Labi, on the eastern side of the Kao Bay as well. Anu promised
that he could show us Purple Roller there, and he said that the place had
more good birds. We also heard that a Scandinavian birder had seen Invisible
Rail in Foli a few months earlier, so we were eager to go there.
This new location is probably comparable to what Tanah Batu Putih was like
- i.e. secondary forest along a logging road. Anu doesn't want to go to Tanah
Batu Putih anymore because he has been chased away there during the religious
fights from 2000 to 2002 (Anu is christian, but the people around Tanah Batu
Putih are predominantly muslims). The birding was really good at Foli, and
in retrospect it would probably have been a better idea to visit Foli first
and go to Labi Labi afterwards. The reason is that some of the more common
endemics are very easy to observe in Foli because the forest is much more
open. For example, Rufous-bellied Triller and White-naped Monarch were very
easy to find in Foli, but in Labi Labi they can be very difficult to see.
Birds observed: Spotted Kestrel, Rufous-tailed Bush-Hen (heard only), Gray-headed Fruit-Dove, White-eyed Imperial Pigeon, Cinnamon-bellied Imperial Pigeon, White Cockatoo, Violet-necked Lory, Chattering Lory, Red-flanked Lorikeet, Red-cheeked Parrot, Eclectus Parrot, Moluccan Hanging-Parrot, Large-tailed Nightjar, Sombre Kingfisher (heard only), Blue-and-white Kingfisher, Common Paradise-Kingfisher, Dollarbird, Purple Roller, Blyth's Hornbill, Ivory-breasted Pitta (heard only), Moustached Treeswift, Moluccan Cuckoo-shrike, Cicadabird, White-bellied Cuckoo-shrike, Rufous-bellied Triller, Golden Bulbul, Willie-wagtail, White-naped Monarch, Spectacled Monarch, Moluccan Flycatcher, Shining Flycatcher, Cream-throated White-eye, White-streaked Friarbird, Paradise-crow, Wallace's Standardwing (heard only), and Black-faced Munia.
We visited the place where the Invisible Rail had
been seen but no luck. We also saw one probable Gray-headed Canary-flycatcher,
but we didn't see it for long enough to be really sure, as it would be an
out-of-range record.
In the afternoon we took the boat back to the other side of the Kao Bay, seeing
some Bridled Terns and more Brown Boobies along the way.
15/08 Galela - Tobelo - drive to Ternate
In the early morning, we drove from Tobelo to Galela, to the nesting beach of Moluccan Scrubfowl. Unfortunately we were too late. Anu had told us that we would be well on time for the birds, but this turned out be completely wrong, the birds typically leave the site well before dawn and we only arrived after dawn.
Around noon, we disappointedly left the site and went back to Tobelo. There we said goodbye to Anu and took a boat trip to a small island just off the coast. There were a pair of Beach Kingfishers there.
After returning we drove back (and took the boat) to Ternate.
A small note on Anu. He's the only bird guide that
we know of on Halmahera, so if you have limited time and speak no Indonesian,
then you really have to hire him. That's a pity because he's really not a
nice guy. He has been known to steal from his customers, and is not at all
interested in anything but getting as much money out of you as he possibly
can. He charges about 50 dollar per day, but has the annoying habit of asking
for more money all the time. Also the fact that we didn't see the scrubfowls
at Galela was entirely his fault. He didn't care nor apologise nor reimburse
us for that.
If you have a lot of time and speak at least some Indonesian, you could go
and bird Halmahera on your own. It won't be a highly efficient trip, but it
is definitely possible to find all the endemics by yourself.
Birds observed today were Black-crowned Night-Heron (out of range on
the Moluccas ?), Black Bittern (heard only), Buff-banded Rail, Brush
Cuckoo (heard only), Asian Koel, (heard only), Beach Kingfisher,
Dollarbird, Willie-wagtail.
16/08 flight from Ternate to Manado, drive to Dumoga Bone
Arranging the flight back from Halmahera to Sulawesi was just as cumbersome as the flight to Kao had been. Initially we had booked a flight from Kao to Manado, but this flight was - of course - cancelled. As an alternative, and after a full hour of arguing, the Merpati office in Tobelo had booked us on a flight from Ternate to Manado instead. Due to an administrative error however, the airport personnel at Ternate did not have our names on the passenger list, and the flight was full, so we were not allowed to board ! We had lost our patience by then and got really angry, and it had a positive result - 5 minutes later we had been booked on another flight that left 20 minutes later.
In the afternoon, we drove from Manado to Dumoga Bone - quite a distance - and saw a few waders and herons along the road.
17/08 - 18/08 Dumoga Bone
We spent two full days at Dumoga Bone, birding the forest and the river edges. You're not supposed to go into the forest on your own but we only hired a guide once and went by ourselves the rest of the time without problems. There is no longer a bridge at Toraut so you have to wade through the river. Not really a problem, just annoying.
Some of the more interesting birds recorded were Darter (soaring above the forest), Rufous-bellied Eagle, Sulawesi Hawk-Eagle, Oriental Hobby, White-breasted Waterhen, Stephan's Dove, Maroon-chinned Fruit-Dove, Ornate Lorikeet, Pygmy Hanging-Parrot, Gould's Bronze-Cuckoo, Uniform Swiftlet, Sulawesi Kingfisher, Crimson Sunbird.
No Black-billed Kingfisher however.
19/08 - 20/08 Tambun - Muara Pusian
In the morning of the 19th, we went to Tambun to see Maleo. Unfortunately the birds were not very cooperative. We heard a few but saw none. We met a volunteer working for a Maleo protection program at Muara Pusian, and he volunteered to take us there. So we drove to Muara Pusian (somewhere along the road towards Manado) and spent the night in the little hut together with all the other volunteers who do daily monitoring of the local nesting beaches. The freshly laid eggs are put in breeding cages, in order to reduce predation by men and monitor lizards. We saw 6 birds altogether. We also saw a Sulawesi Crested Myna and some Black-billed Kingfishers !
Birds observed were: Maleo, Darter, Javan Pond-Heron, Sunda Teal, Black Eagle, Sulawesi Hawk-Eagle, Sulawesi Serpent-Eagle, Barred Buttonquail (seen very well), Isabelline Bush-Hen, White-browed Crake, Rusty-breasted Cuckoo (ssp sepulcralis of Brush Cuckoo), Black-billed Kingfisher, and Sulawesi Myna.
In the pouring rain, we left Muara Pusian and struggled back to the main road, after having to push the car up a hill a few times. We spent the night at Julius' place at Gunung Ambang.
21/08 Gunung Ambang
My final day birding in Sulawesi. Gunung Ambang is a not very well known site that hosts some of the high altitude specialities that are otherwise found mainly in Lore Lindu. It is also home to the newly discovered endemic Cinnabar Hawk Owl.
Birds observed were: Black Eagle, Emerald Dove,
White-bellied Imperial Pigeon, Chestnut-backed Bush-Warbler, Mountain Tailorbird,
Sulawesi Leaf-Warbler, Rufous-throated Flycatcher, Little Pied Flycatcher,
Island Flycatcher, Matinan Flycatcher, Citrine Canary-Flycatcher, Rusty-flanked
Fantail, Sulphur-bellied Whistler, Streak-headed White-eye, Dark-eared Honeyeater,
and Fiery-browed Myna.
I had to return around noon, but Hans and Maarten stayed up the mountain a
bit longer and saw another Scaly Kingfisher and Malia.
Drove back to Manado in late afternoon.
22/08 Flight back to Jakarta
Uneventful. Spent night in airport hotel.
23/08 Muara Angke
My flight to Frankfurt left around 7PM so I had all day to do some final birding in Java, at Muara Angke. Birds observed were Little Black Cormorant, Intermediate Egret, Ruddy-breasted Crake, White-browed Crake, Purple Swamphen, Plaintive Cuckoo, Sunda Coucal, Small Blue Kingfisher, Blue-tailed Bee-eater, Brown-capped Woodpecker, Fulvous-breasted Woodpecker, Pied Triller, Sooty-headed Bulbul, Yellow-vented Bulbul, Common Iora, Bar-winged Prinia, Plain Prinia, Ashy Tailorbird, Pied Fantail, Scarlet-headed Flowerpecker, Racket-tailed Treepie, and Javan Myna.
Evening flight back to Frankfurt and Brussels, no problems.
