Names in brackets refer to commonly used alternative names.

1.     Little Grebe  Tachybaptus ruficollis:  1 was on Chelinda Dam at Nyika NP from 23-27/10

2.    Great White Pelican  Pelecanus onocrotatus:  1 was at the west end of Lake Kazuni, Vwaza Marsh on 27/10 and was seen soaring overhead there next day.

3.    White-breasted Cormorant  Phalacrocorax lucidus:  Up to 50 were on the Shire River at Liwonde NP from 19-22/10, mainly at a roost on the east bank north of Mvuu Lodge, and up to 40 were roosting on offshore islets at Makuzi Beach on 30/10-1/11.

4.    Reed Cormorant (Long-tailed Cormorant)  Phalacrocorax africanus:  c30 were seen flying to roost on the Shire River at Liwonde NP on 19/10 and thereafter a few seen daily there until 22/10.

5.    African Darter  Anhinga rufa:  Up to 4 seen on the Shire River at Liwonde NP on 20-22/10, usually up-river of Mvuu Lodge.

6.    Little Bittern  Ixobrychus minutus payesii: An immature was on the Shire River at Liwonde NP down-river of Mvuu Lodge on 21/10.

7.    Black-crowned Night Heron  Nycticorax nycticorax: 2 were flushed from the Lingadzi River at the Lilongwe NS on 15/10, and 18 were along the Shire River at Liwonde NP late afternoon on 19/10.

8.    White-backed Night Heron  Gorsachius leuconotus: An adult showed extremely well and an immature was seen briefly at Mvuu Lodge, Liwonde NP on 19/10.  Thereafter odd birds were heard calling but there were no further sightings.

9.    Squacco Heron  Ardeola ralliodes:  Up to 10 were on the Shire River at Liwonde NP from 19-22/10 and 1 was often in front of the main reception building at Mvuu Lodge on the same dates.

10.    Cattle Egret  Bubulcus ibis: Often seen when driving around the country and particularly common at Liwonde NP with up to 200 along the Shire River on 19-22/10.  1 was also seen at Kazuni Lake, Vwaza Marsh on 27/10.

11.    Green-backed Heron  Butorides striata:  Up to 6 were on the Shire River at Liwonde NP from 19-22/10 and could often be found on the inlet in front of our chalet at Mvuu Lodge, and 1 was on the shore at Makuzi Beach on 31/10.

12.    Black Heron (Black Egret) Egretta ardesiaca:  1 was on the Shire River at Liwonde NP down-river of Mvuu Lodge on 19/10 and 2 flew south with a Little Egret off Makuzi Beach early evening on 30/10.

13.    Great White Egret  Egretta alba:  Up to 6 were on the Shire River at Liwonde NP from 19-22/10 and 1 could often be found on the inlet in front of our chalet at Mvuu Lodge.

14.    Yellow-billed Egret (Intermediate Egret)  Egretta intermedia:  5 were seen together in flight on the Shire River at Liwonde NP on 20/10, but thereafter just 1 seen on 21/10.

15.    Little Egret Egretta garzetta:  30+ were on the Shire River at Liwonde NP from 19-22/10 and 1 was at Makuzi Beach on 30-31/10 with another flying offshore there on 30/10.

16.    Grey Heron  Ardea cinerea:  4 or 5 were on the Shire River at Liwonde NP from 19-22/10 and up to 10 were around Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh from 27-30/10.

17.    Goliath Heron  Ardea goliath:  Up to 3 were on the Shire River at Liwonde NP from 19-22/10.

18.    Purple Heron Ardea purpurea:  An immature was on the Shire River up-river of Mvuu Lodge at Liwonde NP on 20/10 and the same or another was down-river on 21/10.

19.    Hamerkop  Scopus umbretta:  1 was near Mvuu Camp at Liwonde NP on 21/10 and 1 was on the shore at Makuzi Beach on 31/10.

20.    White Stork  Ciconia ciconia:  1 was at Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 27/10.

21.    Saddle-billed Stork  Ephippiorhynchus s(enegalensis:  2 were in flight on the east bank of the Shire River south of Mvuu Camp at Liwonde NP on 22/10.

22.    African Openbill  Anastomus lamelligerus:  50+ were on the Shire River at Liwonde NP from 19-22/10, often in flocks overhead, and 1 was regularly in front of the reception building at Mvuu Lodge on the same dates.

23.    Yellow-billed Stork  Mycteria ibis:  1 was on the Shire River at Liwonde NP on 19/10, 1 was overhead there on 20/10 and another overhead on 21/10, and 1 was feeding with African Spoonbills at the W end of Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 31/10.

24.    African Sacred Ibis  Threskiornis aethiopicus:  2 were on the Shire River down-stream of Mvuu Lodge at Liwonde NP on 19/10 with 6 there on 21-22/10.

25.    Hadeda Ibis  Bostrychia hagedash:  Up to 50 were on the Shire River at Liwonde NP on 19-22/10 and 8 were at Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10.

26.    Glossy Ibis  Plegadis falcinellus:  15+ were on the Shire River at Liwonde NP on 19-22/10 and 4 were on Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 28/10.

27.    African Spoonbill  Platalea alba:  5 were constantly on view at Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh from 27-30/10.

28.    White-faced Duck  (White-faced Tree-Duck)  Dendrocygna viduata:  52 were on the west bank of the Shire River up-river of Mvuu Lodge at Liwonde NP on 20/10.

29.    Egyptian Goose  Alopochen aegyptiaca:  A few family parties were on the Shire River at Liwonde NP from 19-22/10 and 200+ were around Lake Kazuni and the South Rukuru River at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10.

30.    Spur-winged Goose  Plectropterus gambensis:  Up to 18 were on the Shire River at Liwonde NP on 19-22/10 and up to 3 were on Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10.

31.    Comb Duck (Knob-billed Duck)  Sarkidornis melanotos:  4 were at the west end of Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 27/10.

32.    Yellow-billed Duck  Anas undulate:  A pair were on the dams at Chelinda, Nyika NP early morning only on 26-27/10 and up to 10 were on Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10.

33.    Red-billed Teal  Anas erythrorhyncha:  40+ were on Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10.

34.    Southern Pochard  Netta erythrophthalma:  A female was at Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 28/10.

35.    White-headed Vulture  Trigonoceps occipitalis:  1 flew down to drink at Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 29/10.

36.    White-backed Vulture  Gyps africanus:  1 flew over Zovo Chipolo at Nyika NP on 24/10.

37.    Palm-nut Vulture  Gypohierax angolensis:  1 was on the east bank of the Shire River south of Mvuu Camp at Liwonde NP on 21/10 and the same or another flew over the river on 22/10.

38.    African Marsh-Harrier  Circus ranivorus:  An immature was hunting the hillside to the south of Makuzi Beach on 31/10 and 1/11.

39.    African Harrier-Hawk (Gymnogene)  Polyboroides typus:  An adult was over the Shire River at Liwonde NP on 21/10, with 2 overhead there on 22/10, and an immature was on the shoreline at Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 30/10.

40.    Bateleur  Terathopius ecaudatus:  A female was overhead at Dzalanyama Forest on 16/10, 3 were at Liwonde NP on 20/10 with 2 there on 21-22/10, and 1 was at Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 28/10 with an immature there on 30/10.

41.    Black-chested Snake-Eagle  Circaetus pectoralis:  1 flew over the northern section of Kazuni Lake at Vwaza Marsh on 29/10.

42.    Western Banded Snake-Eagle  Circaetus cinerascens:  At Liwonde NP 2 were over the west bank of the Shire River on 19/10, 1 was near Mvuu Camp, 3 were over the Shire River and 1 was east of Mvuu Lodge on 20/10, and1 was over the east bank of the Shire River on 21/10 with 2 there on 22/10. 

43.    Rufous-chested Sparrowhawk  (Red-breasted Sparrowhawk)  Accipter rufiventris:  1 flew over carrying prey at the turn-off to the Zambian Rest-House at Nyika NP on 26/10.

44.    Ovambo Sparrowhawk  Accipter ovampensis:  a female circled low overhead near the Forest Lodge at Dzalanyama Forest on 16/10.

45.    African Goshawk  Accipter tachiro:  A female flew across the northern section of Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 29/10.

46.    Shikra  (Little-banded Goshawk)  Accipter badius:  1 flew over Heuglin’s Lodge on 17/10.

47.    Dark-chanting Goshawk  Melierax metabates:  1 was at Vwaza Marsh north of the South Rukuru River on 30/10.

48.    Gabar Goshawk  Melierax gabar:  1 was perched on a telegraph pole near the Ku Chawe Inn at Zomba Plateau on 18/10 and 1 was on the east bank of the Shire River south of Mvuu Camp on 22/10.

49.    Lizard Buzzard  Kaupifalco monogrammicus:  A pair were north of Zomba on 17/10 and 1 was at Dam No.2 at Chelinda and 1 near the riding stables at Nyika NP on 23/10.

50.    Augur Buzzard  Buteo augur:  Single pale and a dark phase individuals were regularly around Chelinda at Nyika NP on 23-27/10 whilst horse rides and drives across the plateau invariably turned up 1 or 2 daily.

51.    Steppe Buzzard  Buteo vulpinus:  At the Zomba Plateau 1 was at Mulunguzi Dam on 18/10 and 1 was seen overhead on 19/10, whilst 1 or 2 were regularly seen at Chelinda, Nyika NP on 23-27/10 with singles being also seen regularly on horse rides and drives across the plateau on the same dates.

52.    Long-crested Eagle  Lophaetus occipitalis: 1 was at Mulunguzi Dam on the Zomba Plateau on 19/10.

53.    African Crowned Eagle (Crowned Hawk-Eagle)  Stephanoaetus coronatus:  1 was heard calling over the Zovo Chipolo Forest at Nyika NP on 24/10.

54.    Martial Eagle  Polemaetus bellicosus:  1 was spotlighted on a night drive east of Mvuu Lodge at Liwonde NP on 21/10 and 1 was over the Zovo Chipolo Forest on 24/10.

55.    African Hawk-Eagle  Aquial spilogaster:  In Liwonde NP an adult was seen perched on the east bank of the Shire River up-river of Mvuu Lodge and the same or another was seen overhead east of the lodge on 20/10, with an immature present at the Mpthapalala Road waterhole on 21/10.

56.    Tawny Eagle  Aquila rapax:  At Liwonde NP a female and juvenile were seen perched south of Mvuu Camp on 21/10 with 1 was seen overhead in the same area on 22/10.

57.    Wahlberg’s Eagle  Aquila wahlbergi:  A dark phase individual was being mobbed by Fork-tailed Drongos at Dzalanyama Forest on 16/10 and an immature was over the mopane forest east of Mvuu Lodge during a game drive on 20/10.

58.    African Fish-Eagle  Haliaeetus vocifer:  At Liwonde NP up to 10 were around the Shire River with one pair regularly fishing in front of the reception building at Mvuu Lodge on 19-22/10, 1 flew across Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 27/10 and up to 4 were in the air together over Makuzi Beach on 31/10.

59.    Yellow-billed Kite  Milvus aegyptius:  5 were over Lilongwe NS on 15/10.  1 over Mvuu Lodge at Liwonde NP on 21/10 was the first of the season.  At Nyika NP between 23-27/10 2 were regularly at Chelinda and individuals could generally be found over the plateau on horse rides or game drives.  1 was at Kazuni Lake at Vwaza Marsh on 27/10.

60.    European Honey Buzzard  Pernis apivorus:  1 was over the Shire River near Mvuu Lodge at Liwonde NP on 20/10, up to 2 including a dark morph were around Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 28-29/10, and 1 flew over Makuzi Beach three times on 31/10.

61.    African Cuckoo Hawk  Aviceda cuculoides:  1 was over the mopane woodland east of Mvuu Lodge at Liwonde NP on 20/10.

62.    Black-shouldered Kite  Elanus caeruleus:  1 was seen from the road near Dedza between Lilongwe and Zomba on 17/10. 

63.    Osprey  Pandion halieaetus:  1 was at the Shire River in Liwonde NP on 20-21/10.

64.    Peregrine Falcon  Falco peregrinus:  1 was seen on the Nyika Plateau on 25/10.

65.    Red-necked Falcon  Falco chicquera:  1 circled over our boat on the Shire River at Liwonde NP on 20/10 and a pair were on the west shoreline of Kazuni Lake at Vwaza Marsh on 28/10.

66.    Dickinson’s Kestrel  Falco dicknsoni:  In Liwonde NP a pair were nesting in a dead palm tree at Mvuu Lodge on 19-22/10 though only one bird was usually visible (often calling loudly) around mid-afternoon, and another pair were seen at a nest hole along the Mpthapalala Road on 21/10.  1 was near the airstrip at Vwaza Marsh on 30/10.

67.    Red-winged Francolin  Scleroptila levaillantii crawshayi:  3 were at Lake Kalaumi in Nyika NP on 23/10 and thereafter up to 6 were seen on the grasslands west of Chelinda on 24-25/10 with 3 near Chowo Forest on 26/10.

68.    Hildebrandt’s Spurfowl (Hildebrandt’s Francolin)  Pternistis hildebranti:  A party of 5 crossed the road at the turn-off to the Zambian Rest-House in Nyika NP on 26/10. 

69.    Red-necked Spurfowl (Red-necked Francolin)  Pternistis afer:  In Liwonde NP 4 were on the banks of the Shire River north of Mvuu on 20/10.  Common at Vwaza Marsh and around Lake Kazuni with 3 or 4 parties of up to 7 seen daily from 27-30/10. 

70.    Swainson’s Spurfowl  (Swainson’s Francolin)  Pternistis swainsonii: 2 were seen to the north-west of Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 29/10. 

71.    Common Quail  Coturnix coturnix:  1 was calling from the grasslands west of Chelinda in Nyika NP on 24/10 and 1 was spotlighted flying alongside the vehicle on a night drive at Chelinda on 26/10. 

72.    Helmeted Guineafowl  Numida meleagris:  A common bird in bush habitat with 3 at Lilongwe NS on 15/10, flocks of up to 10 in Liwonde NP on 19-22/10 and flocks of up to 30 regular at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10.

73.    Wattled Crane  Grus carunculatus:  A pair were seen down to about 10 metres near Lake Kalaumi in Nyika NP on 23/10 and were seen again more distantly in the same area on 24/10.

74.    Black Crake  Amaurornis flavirostra:  Common along the Shire River at Liwonde NP on 19-22/10 with up to 12 seen on boat trips and also regularly visible around Mvuu Lodge.  I was taken from the riverbank by a small crocodile on 22/10.

75.    Red-knobbed Coot  (Crested Coot) Fulica cristata:  A pair with a chick were at Chelinda Dam in Nyika NP on 23-27/10.

76.    Denham’s Bustard  (Stanley’s Bustard)  Neotis denhami:  2 were on the Nyika Plateau north-west of Chelinda on 25/10.

77.    African Jacana  Actophilornis africanus:  Very common along the Shire River at Liwonde NP on 19-22/10 with 30+ seen on the boat trips and also regularly visible around Mvuu Lodge.

78.    Blacksmith Lapwing (Blacksmith Plover)  Vanellus armatus:  At Liwonde NP 1 pair was upriver and 1 pair downriver of Mvuu Lodge on the east bank of the Shire River on 19-22/10, and up to 18 were at the east end of Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10.

79.    Spur-winged Lapwing (Spur-winged Plover)  Vanellus spinosus:  At Liwonde NP 1 pair was upriver and 1 pair downriver of Mvuu Lodge on the east bank of the Shire River from 19-22/10.

80.    Senegal Lapwing  (Lesser Black-winged Plover)  Vanellus lugubris:  2 pairs were at the west end of Kazuni Lake at Vwaza Marsh on 29/10.

81.    African Wattled Lapwing  Vanellus senegallus:  Up to 11 were along the Shire River at Liwonde NP on 19-22/10 and a pair were at the east end of Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10.

82.    Common Ringed Plover  Charadrius hiaticula:  2 were on the dry shoreline in front of Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 28/10.

83.    Three-banded Plover  Charadrius tricollaris:  In Liwonde NP 1 was along the Shire River north of Mvuu on 21/10 and 2 were on the river south of Mvuu on 22/10.

84.    Kittlitz’s Plover  Charadrius pecuarius:  Up to 16 were on the dry shoreline in front of the Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 27-29/10 but only 3 were there on 30/10.

85.    Common Greenshank  Tringa nebularia:  Up to 3 were along the Shire River at Liwonde NP on 19-22/10 and up to 5 at Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10.

86.    Wood Sandpiper  Tringa glareola:  Up to 15 were along the Shire River at Liwonde NP on 19-22/10 and up to 4 were at Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10.

87.    Green Sandpiper  Tringa ochropus:  In Liwonde NP 1 was at the waterhole along the Mpthalapala Road on 21/10 and 2 were along the Shire River south of Mvuu on 22/10.

88.    Common Sandpiper  Actitis hypoleucus:  A common species on lakes and riverbanks with 1 at Lilongwe NS on 15/10, 1 at Mulunguzi Dam on 18/10, up to 35 along the Shire River at Liwonde NP on 19-22/10, up to 6 at Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10, and 2 at Makuzi Beach on 31/10.

89.    African Snipe (Ethiopian Snipe) Gallinago nigripennis:  2 were on the banks of the Shire River north of Mvuu in Liwonde NP on 20/10.

90.    Little Stint  Calidris minuta:  A flock of 22 were upriver plus 2 downriver of Mvuu on the Shire River at Liwonde NP on 20/10, up to 3 were on the dry shoreline of Kazuni Lake in front of the Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10 and a flock of 24 were at the west end of Kazuni Lake on 28/10.

91.    Ruff  Philomachus pugnax:  At Liwonde NP 1 was along the Shire River on 19/10 and 8 were together south of Mvuu on 22/10.   A male was at the east end of Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 28/10.

92.    Black-winged Stilt  Himantopus himantopus:  2 were regularly seen at Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10.

93.    Water Thick-Knee (Water Dikkop)  Burhinus vermiculatus:  At Liwonde NP 3 were on the Shire River on 19/10 and 1 was at Mvuu Lodge on 22/10, and 2 were at the east end of Kazuni Lake at Vwaza Marsh on 29/10. 

94.    Collared Pratincole (Common/Red-winged Pratincole)  Glareola pratincola:  Up to 16 were on the dry shoreline in front of the Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10.

95.    Grey-headed Gull  Larus cirrocephalus:  9 flew north at dusk along the Shire River in Liwonde NP on 20/10 and 3 flew flew south there early morning on 21/10.  Heard calling to the north Makuzi Beach on 31/10 but not seen.

96.    White-winged Tern (White-winged Black Tern) Chilodonias leucopterus:  2 adults including 1 still in partial breeding plumage were over Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 27/10.

97.    African Olive-Pigeon (Rameron Pigeon)  Columba arquatrix:  2 flew over the Zomba Plateau on 18/10.  Fairly common in Nyika NP from 23-27/10 with up to 5 seen regularly around Chelinda and up to 20 seen generally around the plateau, although only 3 at Dam No.2 at Chelinda on 26/10 were seen perched.

98.    Dusky Turtle Dove (Pink-breasted Turtle Dove)  Streptopelia legens:  In Nyika NP 9 were at Chelinda on 23/10, with 2 there on 26/10 and 3 there on 27/10.   Best seen early morning below Chelinda Lodge. 

99.    Red-eyed Dove  Streptopelia semitorquata:  Up to 5 seen in open bush habitat at Liwonde NP on 19-22/10 and generally up to 15 around Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10 with 250+ coming to drink there on 30/10, and 10+ at Makuzi Beach on 30/10-1/11. 

100. Cape Turtle Dove  (Ring-necked Dove) Streptopelia capicola:  Abundant in open forest or savannah-type habitats with for example 300+ at the waterhole along the Mpthapalala Road at Liwonde NP on 21/10 and generally up to 50 around Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10 with 200+ coming to drink there early am on 30/10, and a few around Makuzi Beach on 30/10-1/11.

101. Laughing Dove (Palm Dove)  Streptopelia senegalensis:  1 was flushed from the garden at Heuglin’s Lodge on 15/10.

102. Namaqua Dove Oena capensis:  At Vwaza Marsh 1 was at the Kazuni Safari Camp on 27/10, 2 were at the west end of Lake Kazuni on 28/10, and 1 was along the South Rukuru River on 30/10.

103. Blue-spotted Wood-Dove  Turtur afer:  1 was heard calling from JW’s garden in Zomba on 17/10, 1 was at Makuzi Beach on 31/10 with a pair in the cultivated area behind there on 1/11.

104. Emerald-spotted Wood-Dove  Turtur chalcospilos:  1 was near the Mulunguzi Dam at Zomba on 18/10,  thereafter fairly common at Liwonde NP without being particularly numerous and up to 10 around Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10.

105. Grey-headed Parrot  Poicephalus suahelicus:  In Liwonde NP 2 were near Mvuu Camp and 6 at Mvuu Lodge on 20/10, with 2 south of Mvuu on 21/10.

106. Brown-headed Parrot  Poicephalus cryptoxanthus:  At Liwonde NP 2 flew over Mvuu Lodge on 19/10,  1 was near Mvuu Camp on 20/10, and 6 were south of Mvuu on 21/10 with 4 there on 22/10.

107. Meyer’s Parrot (Brown Parrot) Poicephalus meyeri:  At Vwaza Marsh up to 8 could be seen fairly easily around Kazuni Camp on 28-30/10 and 7 were north-west of Lake Kazuni on 31/10.

108. Lillian’s Lovebird (Nyasa Lovebird)  Agapornis lilianae:  Proved to be common and easy to see at Liwonde NP with 50+ near Mvuu Camp on 20-22/10 and 20+ in the mopane woodlands on 20/10.

109. Livingstone’s Turaco  (Livingstone’s Lourie)  Tauraco livingstonii:  2 were in JW’s garden and 3 were at the Ku Chawe Inn at Zomba on 17/10, and 12+ were on Zomba Plateau on 18-19/10.

110. Schalow’s Turaco  (Schalow’s Lourie)  Tauraco shalowi:  9 were at Lilongwe NS on 15/10, often showing very well and 1 was calling from near Heuglin’s Lodge on 17/10.  In Nyika NP 4 were at Zovo Chipolo on 24/10 with 2 there on 26/20.

111. Purple-crested Turaco (Purple-crested Lourie)  Gallirex porphyreoloptra:  In Liwonde NP fairly common around Mvuu with up to 4 present on 20-22/10. 

112. Grey Go-Away-Bird  (Grey Lourie)  Corythaxoides concolor:  In Liwonde NP 2 were east of Mvuu on 20/10 and 1 south of there on 22/10 and at Vwaza Marsh 1 was west of Lake Kazuni on 28/10, 1 east of the lake and 3 around the camps on 29/10,

113. Black Cuckoo  Cuculus clamosus:  1 showed well north-west of Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 30/10.

114. Klaas’s Cuckoo  Chrysococcyx klaas:  1 was in the mopane woodlands east of Mvuu in Liwonde NP on 20/10.

116. Burchell’s Coucal  Centropus burchelli:  At Liwonde NP 1 was at Mvuu Lodge on 19/10 and 2 were along the Shire River on 21/10 with 2 more seen on 22/10.

117. Senegal Coucal  Centropus senegalensis:  1 was at the wooded point on the eastern shoreline of Kazuni Lake at Vwaza Marsh and 1 near the western shore on 29/10, and 3 were together behind Makuzi Beach on 1/11.

118. White-browed Coucal  Centropus superciliosus:  1 was to the west of Kazuni Lake at Vwaza Marsh on 29/10.

119. Spotted Eagle Owl  Bubo africanus:  1 was spotlighted on a night drive near Chelinda in Nyika NP on 22/10 with 2 spotlighted on 24/10. 

120. Verreaux’s Eagle Owl  (Giant Eagle Owl)  Bubo lacteus:  2 were spotlighted just after dusk on a night drive to the west of Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 27/10 and 1 was seen late afternoon in the same general area on 29/10. 

121. Barred Owlet  Glaucidium capense:  A pair showed well at the Kazuni Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 27/10 with just 1 seen there on 29/10. 

122. African Wood-Owl  Strix woodfordii:  At Liwonde NP birds were heard calling after dusk at Mvuu Lodge on 19/10 and 21/10.

123. Marsh Owl  Asio capensis:  2 separate individuals were spotlighted on a night drive around the grasslands near Chelinda in Nyika NP on 26/10. 

124. Fiery-necked Nightjar  Caprimulgus pectoralis:  1 was spotlighted on a night drive north of Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 28/10.

125. Ruwenzori Nightjar  (Mountain Nightjar)  Caprimulgus ruwenzorii:  5 were spotlighted on a night drive around Chelinda in Nyika NP on 22/10 but only 1 was spotlighted on both 24/10 and 26/10.  1 was seen at dusk at Chelinda Lodge on 25/10.

126. Square-tailed Nightjar  (Mozambique Nightjar)  Caprimulgus fossii:  1 was spotlighted on a night drive east of Mvuu  in Liwonde NP on 20/10 with 4 more spotlighted on 21/10. 

127. Scarce Swift  Schoutedenapus myoptilus:  2 were with saw-wings near Mulunguzi Dam at the Zomba Plateau late afternoon on 18/10, and 5 were over the Nyika Plateau on 26/10. 

128. African Palm Swift  Cypsiurus parvus:  5+ were at Heuglin’s Lodge 15-17/10.  Common at Liwonde NP, mainly around the Shire River with peak count of 100+ on 21/10.  Up to 5 were around Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10 and just 1 was at Makuzi Beach on 31/10. 

129. Alpine Swift  Tachymarptis melba:  2 were over Zovo Chipolo in Nyika NP on 24/10 and 2 were over the plateau on 26/10.

130. Mottled Swift  Tachymarptis aequatorialis: 3 were overhead between the Trout Farm and William’s Falls at the Zomba Plateau on 18/10 and 1 was over the Nyika Plateau on 26/10.

131. Common Swift  (European Swift)  Apus apus:  2 were over Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 28/10 and 50+ were part of an obvious southerly passage of swifts at Makuzi Beach on 31/10.

132. Little Swift  Apus affinis:  c30 spent about an hour over Makuzi Beach on 31/10 before flying off south.

133. Horus Swift  Apus horus:  2 were at Makuzi Beach on 30/10 with 10 there on 31/10.

134. White-rumped Swift  Apus caffer:  2 were over Makuzi Beach on 30/10.

135. Speckled Mousebird  Colius striatus:  4 including a young juvenile were at Heuglin’s Lodge on 17/10, 2 were on the Nyika Plateau on 26/10, and 2 were at Makuzi Beach on 30/10 and 31/10.

136. Red-faced Mousebird  Urocolius indicus:  In Liwonde NP 12 were around Mvuu Camp on 20/10, and up to 3 south of Mvuu on 21-22/10.

137. Narina Trogon  Apaloderma narina:  A female showed extremely well in JW’s garden at Zomba on 19/10.

138. Bar-tailed Trogon  Apaloderma vittatum:  A male and female were seen well in Zovo Chipolo Forest in Nyika NP on 26/10.

139. Giant Kingfisher  Megaceryle maxima:  At Liwonde NP a female was at Mvuu Lodge on 19/10,  a female along the Shire River on 21/10, and a male along the river on 22/10.

140. Pied Kingfisher  Ceryle rudis:  Up to 9 were seen on boat trips along the Shire River at Liwonde NP on 19-22/10, and up to 3 were at Makuzi Beach on 30/10-1/11. 

141. Half-collared Kingfisher  Alcedo semitorquata:  1 was seen well in flight and calling along the Lingadzi River at Lilongwe NS on 15/10.

142. Malachite Kingfisher  Alcedo cristata:  Up to 14 were seen on boat trips along the Shire River at Liwonde NP on 19-22/10.

143. African Pygmy Kingfisher  Ispidina picta:  A pair were in woodland near to the Mulunguzi Dam on the Zomba Plateau on 18/10 and 1 was near the Kazuni administration buildings at Vwaza Marsh on 29/10.

144. Woodland Kingfisher  Halcyon senegalensis:  1 was north of Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 28/10.

145. Striped Kingfisher  Halcyon chelicuti:  1 was in the mopane woodlands east of Mvuu in Liwonde NP on 20/10, 1 was north of Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 27/10 and another to the north-west on 30/10.

146. Brown-hooded Kingfisher  Halcyon albiventris:  At Liwonde NP 1 was regularly in front of Mvuu Lodge on 19-22/10,  1 was seen along the Shire River on 20/10 with another seen on 21/10,  and 1 was spotlighted on a night drive also on 21/10.  At Vwaza Marsh 1 was near the administration buildings on 29/10.  1 seen behind Makuzi Beach on 1/11 was near an apparent nesting hole.

147. European Bee-eater  Merops apiaster:  2 were over the Lilongwe NS on 15/10 and 3 were over Heuglin’s Lodge on 17/10.  At Liwonde NP 2 were over Mvuu Camp on 20/10 and about 30 were along the Shire River on 21/10 with 8 there on 22/10.  In Nyika NP 1 was near Chelinda on 24/10 and at Vwaza Marsh 1 was near Kazuni Lake on 28/10 and another north-west of the lake on 30/10. 12 flew south over Makuzi Beach on 31/10.

148. Bohm’s Bee-eater  Merops boehmi:  Fairly common and easy to see in the Mvuu area of Liwonde NP from 20-22/10 mainly around the Camp where a maximum of 5 were seen on 20/10 plus 1 or 2 regularly at Mvuu Lodge.

149. Little Bee-eater  Merops pusillus:  Fairly common at Liwonde NP with up to 10 along the Shire River and around both Mvuu Lodge and Mvuu Camp on 19-22/10.  1 was at the Nyika Plateau on 26/10, and 2 were at Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 28/10.

150. Swallow-tailed Bee-eater  Merops hirundineus:  At Liwonde NP 1 was outside Mvuu Camp and 1 was at Mvuu Lodge on 20/10.

151. Lilac-breasted Roller  Coracius caudatus:  At Liwonde NP 1 was along the Shire River on 19/10, 1 near Mvuu Camp and 1 near the Shire River on 20/10, and 2 along the Shire River on 21/10.  1 was west of Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 27/10 and 2 to the north-west of there on 30/10.

152. Broad-billed Roller  Eurystomus glaucurus:  At Liwonde NP was 1 near the park entrance on 19/10 and thereafter up to 4 were present around Mvuu Lodge plus 1 or 2 south of Mvuu from 19-22/10.  2 were regularly seen at the Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10 with 4 there on 29/10 and 3 were north of the South Rukuru River on 30/10.

153. African Hoopoe  Upupa africana:  1 was seen from Heuglin’s Lodge on 17/10, 1 was near Mvuu Camp and another east of Mvuu at Liwonde NP on 20/10,  and 3 were south of Mvuu on 21/10.

154. Green Wood-Hoopoe  (Red-billed Wood-Hoopoe)  Phoeniculus purpureus:  Separate groups of 3 and 4 were seen to the north-west of Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 30/10.

155. Common Scimitarbill  (African Scimitarbill)  Rhinopomastus cyanomelas:  1 was south of Mvuu in Liwonde NP on 21/10 and 2 were on the Nyika Plateau on 26/10. 

156. African Grey Hornbill  Tockus nasutus:  In Liwonde NP common in the mopane woodlands with for example 10 there on 20/10 and 5 south of Mvuu on 21/10, and equally common at Vwaza Marsh with up to 15 seen on drives and walks through the open woodlands on 27-30/10. 

157. Southern Red-billed Hornbill  Tockus rufirostris:  1 was near Mvuu Camp at Liwonde NP on 20/10 and 4 were south of the camp on 22/10.  2 were to the north-west of Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 30/10.

158. Crowned Hornbill  Tockus alboterminatus:  1 was seen near its nesting hole in JW’s grounds at Zomba on 19/10 and a pair were south of Mvuu Camp at Liwonde NP on 20/10.

159. Trumpeter Hornbill  Bycanistes bucinator:  At Liwonde NP 2 flew over the Shire River on 19/10, 2 were east of Mvuu on 20/10, 1 south of Mvuu on 21/10 and 2 south of Mvuu on 22/10.

160. Southern Ground-Hornbill  Bucorvus leadbeateri:  At Liwonde NP a pair were seen on the east bank of the Shire River downriver of Mvuu Lodge on 19/10 and two parties of 3 were south and west of Mvuu on 21/10.

161. Brown-breasted Barbet  Lybius melanopterus:  1 was seen fairly well just south of Mvuu Camp in Liwonde NP on 22/10.

162. Black-collared Barbet  Lybius torquatus:  1 was heard calling from Heuglin’s Lodge on 17/10, 1 showed well at the Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 27/10 and again on 30/10, and another was seen west of Kazuni Lake on 28/10.

163. White-eared Barbet  Stactolaema leucotis:  1 was in a fruiting fig tree near the Chawe Camp-Site and a pair were at a nesting hole near the Trout Farm on the Zomba Plateau on 18/10.

164. Moustached Tinkerbird  (Moustached Green Tinkerbird)  Pogoniulus leucomystax :  In Nyika NP 4 were calling at the Zovo Chipolo Forest on 24/10, with 2 calling on a return visit plus another calling and 1 finally seen in Chowo Forest on 26/10.

165. Yellow-rumped Tinkerbird  (Golden-rumped Tinkerbird)  Pogoniulus bilineatus:  1 was seen and another was calling in JW’s garden at Zomba on 17/10.

166. Crested Barbet  Trachyphonus vaillantii:  1 was east of Mvuu in Liwonde NP on 20/10 and 1 was at the western end of Kazuni Lake at Vwaza Marsh on 29/10 with 3 in the area to the north and west of the lake on 30/10.

167. Scaly-throated Honeyguide  Indicator variegatus:  1 showed well along the road above the Mulunguzi Nature Trail on the Zomba Plateau on 18/10 and 1 flew across the road on the Nyika Plateau on 26/10.

168. Greater Honeyguide  Indicator indicator: 1 was calling north of Zomba on 17/10,  a male was south of Mvuu in Liwonde NP on 21/10 with a female at Mvuu Lodge on 22/10, and a male was near Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 29/10.

169. Lesser Honeyguide  Indicator minor:  1 was calling from JW’s garden in Zomba on 17/10, 1 was south of Mvuu in Liwonde NP on 21/10,

170. Pallid Honeyguide (Eastern Honeyguide)  Indicator meliphilus:  1 was part of a mixed flock at Dzalanyama Forest on 16/10.

171. Green-backed Honeybird (Slender-billed Honeyguide)  Prodotiscus zambesiae:  1 was seen on a game drive to the north-west of Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 30/10.

172. Speckle-throated Woodpecker (Reichenow’s Woodpecker)  Campethera scriptoricauda:  A single female was east of Mvuu in Liwonde NP on 20/10 and 2 males and a female were south of Mvuu on 21/10.

173. Golden-tailed Woodpecker  Campethera abingoni:  At Vwaza Marsh 1 was west of Kazuni Lake on 28/10.

174. Cardinal Woodpecker  Dendropicos fuscescens: A pair were at Heuglin’s Lodge on 17/10, a male was near Mvuu Camp at Liwonde NP on 20/10 with a female south of there on 22/10,  and at Vwaza Marsh a pair were regularly seen at the Safari Camp on 27-30/10, 3 were west of Kazuni Lake and 2 more north of there on 28/10, 1 was east of the lake on 29/10, and 4 were seen on a drive to the north and west of the lake on 30/10.

175. Bearded Woodpecker  Dendropicos namaquus:  A female was at the Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 27/10, a male was north of there on 28/10, and a female was east of Kazuni Lake and a male around the Safari Camp on 29/10.

176. Rufous-naped Lark   Mirafra africana nyikae:  1 was on the grasslands near Chelinda in Nyika NP on 24/10 and 1 on the plateau on 26/10. 

177. Sand Martin  (Bank Swallow)  Riparia riparia:  1 was amongst a passage of Barn Swallows on the Nyika Plateau on 25/10

178. Brown-throated Martin  (African Sand Martin / Plain Martin)  Riparia paludicola:  1 was at Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 28/10. 

179. Barn Swallow  (European Swallow)  Hirundo rustica:  A common migrant with 10+ over Heuglin’s Lodge on 17/10, up to 12 around Mvuu and the Shire River in Liwonde NP on 19-22/10,  flocks of 100+ regularly seen on the Nyika Plateau on 23-27/10, and up to 20 around Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10.  At Makuzi Beach 20+ were present on 30/10 with 100+ there on 31/10.

180. Angola Swallow  Hirundo angolensis:  1 was at Zovo Chipolo in Nyika NP on 24/10.

181. Blue Swallow  Hirundo atrocaerulea:  In Nyika NP up to 10 were regularly seen at Chelinda from 23-27/10, with up to 15 on the surrounding grasslands on 24/10,

182. Wire-tailed Swallow  Hirundo smithii:  At Liwonde NP up to 50 were seen on 19-22/10 with birds nesting in the reception building at Mvuu Lodge and also in the canopies of the boats, leading them to follow the boats out on their river trips.  A pair and a juvenile were at Makuzi Beach on 30/10-1/11.

183. Mosque Swallow  Hirundo senegalensis:  1 was present at a clearing in the mopane woodlands east of Mvuu in Liwonde NP on 20/10.

184. Lesser Striped Swallow  Hirundo abyssinica:  1 was over Heuglin’s Lodge on 17/10 with Barn Swallows, 1 was at Mvuu Lodge in Liwonde NP on 20/10 and again on 22/10, and up to 6 were at Makuzi Beach on 30/10-1/11.

185. Grey-rumped Swallow  Pseudhirundo griseopyga:  3 were with Barn Swallows in front of the Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 30/10.

186. House Martin  Delichon urbicum:  1 was over Zovo Chipolo in Nyika NP on 24/10 and another over the plateau on 26/10, and 4 flew south over Makuzi Beach on 31/10.

187. Eastern Saw-wing  Psalidoprocne orientalis:  6 were over the Makata Stream at the Dzalanyama Forest Lodge on 16/10. 

188. Black Saw-wing Psalidoprocne pristoptera:  Up to 15 were on the Zomba Plateau before the bridge at the Trout Farm and at Mulunguzi Dam on 18-19/10.

189. White-headed Saw-wing  Psalidoprocne albiceps:  3 were at Zovo Chipolo Forest in Nyika NP on 24/10 and 2 were at the roadside acacias on the Nyika Plateau on 26/10.

190. Mountain Wagtail  (Long-tailed Wagtail)  Motacilla clara:  2 showed well along the Lingadzi River at Lilongwe NS on 15/10 and an adult and 2 juveniles were at William’s Falls on the Zomba Plateau on 18/10.

191. African Pied Wagtail  Motacilla aguimp:  Seen fairly commonly when driving around the south of the country, plus 2 were nesting on the boat ramp at the Mvuu Lodge pick-up point in Liwonde NP on 19-22/10 and 3 were near Mvuu Camp on 21/10, 3 were at Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10 and 4 were at Makuzi Beach on 30/10-1/11.

192. African Pipit  (Grassveld Pipit)  Anthus cinnamomeus:  In Nyika NP up to 7 were at Chelinda on 23-27/10, and up to 4 were seen daily on the grasslands west and north of Chelinda on 24-26/10, with 7 seen on the plateau on 26/10.  At Vwaza Marsh up to 13 were on the dry shoreline in front of Kazuni Safari Camp on 27-30/10. 

193. Buffy Pipit  Anthus vaalensis:  1 was on open grassland at Zovo Chipolo Forest in Nyika NP on 24/10.

194. Square-tailed Drongo  Dicrurus ludwigii:  1 was in JW’s garden at Zomba on 19/10.

195. Fork-tailed Drongo  Dicrurus adsimilis:  A common species (though absent on the higher plateaus) with up to 4 including a nesting pair at Heuglin’s Lodge 15-17/10, 2 in JW’s garden at Zomba on 17/10,  up to 8 a day in Liwonde NP from 19-22/10, and up to 8 seen on drives and walks daily at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10.

196. Eurasian Golden Oriole  Oriolus oriolus:  A male was near Kazuni Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 29/10. 

197. Black-headed Oriole  Oriolus larvatus:  6 were together near to the Dzalanyama Forest Lodge on 16/10,  a male was south of Mvuu Camp and another east of Mvuu in Liwonde NP on 20/10, and a male was at the Kazuni administration buildings at Vwaza Marsh on 29/10.

198. Pied Crow  Corvus albus:  A common bird near human habitation with maximum counts of 10 at the Lilongwe NS on 15/10, only 1 on the Zomba Plateau on 18/10, 7 at Chelinda in Nyika NP on 23-27/10, 4 at Kazuni Lake at Vwaza Marsh on 29/10, and 7 at Makuzi Beach on 31/10. 

199. White-necked Raven  Corvus albicollis:  3 were at the Mulunguzi Dam on the Zomba Plateau on 18-19/10, and in Nyika NP 10+ were at Chelinda and up to 6 were seen daily around the plateau from 24-26/10.

200. Southern Black Tit  Parus niger:  3 were around Mvuu in Liwonde NP on 20/10, 1 was south of Mvuu on 21-22/10, 1 was north of Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 28/10 with it or another present in the same general area on 30/10.

201. Spotted Creeper  Salpornis spilonotus:  A pair were at the roadside acacias on the Nyika Plateau on 26/10.

202. Arrow-marked Babbler  Turdoides jardineii:  5 were at Heuglin’s Lodge on 17/10, 4 east of Mvuu in Liwonde NP on 20/10 with 2 south of Mvuu on 22/10, up to 15 were regularly around Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10 and 20+ were north-west of Lake Kazuni on 30/10.

203. Black Cuckoo-Shrike  Campephaga flava:  1 was seen in JW’s garden in Zomba on 17/10.

204. Dark-capped Bulbul (Black-eyed Bulbul) Pyconotus tricolor:  An abundant species seen at every location with maximums of 20+ on the Zomba Plateau on 18/10, up to 10 around Mvuu in Liwonde NP on 19-22/10, up to 10 daily in Nyika NP, 10+ around the Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10, and 30+ at Makuzi Beach on 30/10-1/11.

205. Sombre Greenbul  Andropadus importunes:  Up to 4 were on the Zomba Plateau on 18-19/10 and 3 were in the Mvuu area of Liwonde NP on 20/10. 

206. Little Greenbul  Andropadus virens:  1 was in JW’s garden at Zomba on 17/10 and another was there on 19/10.

207. Southern Mountain Greenbul  Andropadus fusciceps:  In Nyika NP 2 were below Chelinda Lodge on 23/10, 6 in Zovo Chipolo Forest on 24/10, 3 on the plateau on 25/10, and 2 in Zovo Chipolo Forest, 1 in Chowo Forest and 2 on the plateau on 26/10. 

208. Stripe-cheeked Greenbul  Andropadus milanjensis:  10+ were on the Zomba Plateau on 18-19/10 most easily seen around the Chawe Camp Site.

209. Yellow-bellied Greenbul  Chlorocichla flaviventris:  1 or 2 were regularly around Mvuu in Liwonde NP on 20-22/10 and a pair were regularly at Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10 with another west of there on 28/10. 

210. Terrestrial Brownbul  Phyllastrephus terrestris:  1 was south of Mvuu in Liwonde NP on 22/10.

211. Grey-olive Greenbul  Phyllastrephus cerviniventris:  1 was in JW’s garden and another at the top end of the Botanical Gardens at Zomba on 17/10 and 1 showed well near the road bridge before the Trout Farm on the Zomba Plateau on 18/10.

212. Placid Greenbul  Phyllastrephus placidus:  10+ were on the Zomba Plateau on 18-19/10 but were more often heard than seen.

213. Sharpe’s Greenbul  Phyllastrephus alfredi:  1 showed well in the Chowo Forest in Nyika NP on 26/10.

214. Common Stonechat  Saxicola torquatus: Up to 5 were on the Zomba Plateau on 18-19/10 (best area being the Mulunguzi Dam), and in Nyika NP up to 7 were in the Chelinda area from 23-27/10 with a few more seen on rides and drives around the plateau on 24-26/10.

215. Arnott’s Chat (White-headed Black Chat)  Myrmecocichla arnotii:  A female was in the mopane woodlands east of Mvuu in Liwonde NP on 20/10 and another near the airstrip on 22/10.

216. Mocking Cliff-Chat Thamnolaea cinnamomeiventris:  A male was seen briefly at Dzalanyama Forest on 16/10 and then 3 males and a female showed exceptionally well at a rocky outcrop south of the Zambian Rest-House turn-off in Nyika NP on 26/10.

217. Miombo Rock-Thrush  Monticola angolensis:  1 was seen briefly near the Dzalanyama Forest Lodge on 16/10.

218. White-browed Scrub-Robin  Cercotrichas leucophrys:   1 was at the Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 28/10 and 3 were in a territorial dispute there on 29/10. 

219. Collared Palm-Thrush  Cichladusa arquata:  At Liwonde NP a pair were regularly seen around the car park at Mvuu Lodge on 19-22/10 and up to 4 were in the vicinity of Mvuu Camp on 20-21/10. 

220. White-chested Alethe  Pseudalethe fuelleborni:  2 were calling in the Chowo Forest in Nyika NP on 26/10.

221. White-starred Robin  Pogonocichla stellata:  1 was along the road at the Mulunguzi Dam on the Zomba Plateau on 18/10, and in Nyika NP 1 was near Chelinda Lodge on 23/10 with a pair at the same site on 27/10, and 4 were in Zovo Chipolo Forest on 24/10 with 2 there on 26/10.

222. Olive-flanked Robin-Chat  Cossypha anomaia:  2 were calling in Zovo Chipolo Forest in Nyika NP on 24/10 with 1 calling there on 26/10. 

223. Red-capped Robin-Chat  (Natal Robin)  Cossypha natalensis:  1 was on the outskirts of Mvuu Camp in Liwonde NP on 20/10.

224. Cape Robin-Chat  Cossypha caffra:  A pair were near William’s Falls on the Zomba Plateau on 18/10 with 1 at the Ku Chawe Inn on 19/10.  In Nyika NP up to 4 were at Chelinda on 23-27/10, 1 at Zovo Chipolo on 24/10, and 3 on the plateau on 25/10 with 2 there on 26/10.

White-browed Robin-Chat  (Heuglin’s Robin) Cossypha heuglini:  1 was appropriately enough at Heuglin’s Lodge on 16-17/10, 1 was in JW’s garden at Zomba on 17/10, a pair were regularly around Mvuu Lodge at Liwonde NP on 19-22/10, 2 were along the west shore of Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 28/10, and a pair were at Makuzi Beach on 30/10-1/11.

226. Mountain Thrush  Turdus abyssinicus:  A pair showed well at Zovo Chipolo in Nyika NP on 24/10 and 1 was again seen there on 26/10.

227. Kurrichane Thrush  Turdus libonyanus:  5 adults including a pair with 2 well-grown chicks in the nest were at Dzalanyama Forest on 16/10,  2 were in JW’s garden at Zomba on 17/10, 5+ were on the Zomba Plateau on 18-19/10, 1 was on the Nyika Plateau on 26/10, and 1 behind Makuzi Beach on 1/11.

228. Evergreen Forest Warbler  Bradypterus lopezi:  1 was singing in Zovo Chipolo Forest in Nyika NP on 24/10 and of 2 calling there on 26/10 1 was finally tempted into showing extremely well. 

229. Cinnamon Bracken Warbler  Bradypterus cinnamomeus:  Fairly common at Nyika NP but only seen well twice and most often heard singing, with up to 7 at Chelinda from 23-27/10, and 2 on the plateau on 25/10.

230. Little Rush Warbler (African Sedge Warbler) Bradypterus baboecala:  At Liwonde NP 2 were seen in the reedbeds along the Shire River on 19/10, 1 on 20/10, and 1 on 21/10.

231. Dark-capped Yellow Warbler (African Yellow Warbler)  Chloropeta natalensis:  1 was near the Chawe Camp Site and another at the Mulunguzi Dam on the Zomba Plateau on 18/10 and 1 was calling at the roadside acacias on the Nyika Plateau on 26/10.

232. Mountain Yellow Warbler  Chloropeta similis:  3 were at Chelinda in Nyika NP on 23/10 but surprisingly not seen thereafter.

233. Icterine Warbler  Hippolais icterina:  1 was at Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 29/10.

234. Brown Parisoma  Parisoma lugens:  1 showed well in the roadside acacias on the Nyika Plateau on 26/10.

235. Willow Warbler  Phylloscopus trochilus:  Proved to be a common migrant with 1 at Lilongwe NS on 15/10, 1 at Mvuu Camp in Liwonde NP on 20/10, 2 at Chelinda in Nyika NP on 23/10 with 1 at Zovo Chipolo Forest on 24/10 and 1 at Chelinda on 26/10, 1 at Kazuni Safari Camp in Vwaza Marsh on 28/10 with 2 there on 29/10 and 1 west of Lake Kazuni on 30/10, and 1 at Makuzi Beach on 31/10.

236. Yellow-throated Woodland-Warbler Phylloscopus ruficapillus:  1 showed well in JW’s garden at Zomba on 17/10.

237. Tawny-flanked Prinia  Prinia subflava:  3 were at the Lilongwe NS on 15/10, 1 was at Heuglin’s Lodge on 17/10, 1 was south of Mvuu in Liwonde NP on 21/10, and1 was at Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 28-29/10.

238. Bar-throated Apalis  Apalis thoracica:  A pair were near William’s Falls on the Zomba Plateau on 18/10, and in Nyika NP 6 were at Chelinda on 23/10, 3 in Zovo Chipolo Forest on 24/10 and 1 in Chowo Forest on 26/10.  All were of the various grey-brown races found across Malawi.

239. White-winged Apalis  Apalis chariessa:  2 or more pairs were calling in and around JW’s garden at Zomba on 17/10 with 1 or more were heard again on 19/10 but unfortunately none were seen.

240. Yellow-breasted Apalis  Apalis flavida:  A male was at Mvuu Lodge in Liwonde NP on 21/10 and up to 3 were around Makuzi Beach on 30/10-1/11.

241. Black-headed Apalis  Apalis melanocephala:  Up to 3 pairs were on the Zomba Plateau on 18-19/10, the best area generally being around the Mulunguzi Nature Trail.   

242. Grey-backed Camaroptera (Grey-backed Bleating-Warbler)  Camaroptera brevicaudata:  1 was at the Lilongwe NS on 15/10, and 1 was near the Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 28/10 with 2 at the Kazuni Camp on 29/10.

243. Green-backed Camaroptera (Green-backed Bleating-Warbler) Camaroptera brachyura:  1 was at Mvuu Lodge in Liwonde NP on 20/10 and another south of Mvuu on 21/10.

244. Green-capped Eremomela  Eremomela scotops:  1 was at the Lilongwe NS on 15/10 and 2 were at the Dzalanyama Forest on 16/10.

245. Long-billed Crombec  Sylvietta rufescens:  1 was on the outskirts of Mvuu Camp in Liwonde NP on 20/10 and 1 was near Kazuni Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 29/10.

246. Southern Hyliota  (Mashona Hyliota)  Hyliota australis:  1 was with a mixed feeding flock at the Dzalanyama Forest on 16/10.

247. Red-faced Cisticola  Cisticola erythrops:  1 showed well on-and-off in the cultivated area behind Makuzi Beach on 30/10-1/11.

248. Singing Cisticola  Cisticola cantans:  1 was singing at the roadside acacias on the Nyika Plateau on 26/10 and 3 were seen in the thickets at the eastern end of Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 29/10.

249. Black-lored Cisticola  (Mountain Cisticola)  Cisticola nigriloris:  Proved relatively easy to see in Nyika NP with 5 pairs in the Chelinda area from 23-27/10,  3 singing west of Chelinda on 24/10, and 2 on the plateau on 25/10.

250. Rattling Cisticola  Cisticola chiniana:  In Liwonde NP 1 was along the Shire River on 20/10 and 2 were south of Mvuu on 21/10.  1 at Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10 often took to walking on the ground around the dining area, and 8 were seen on a drive north and west of Lake Kazuni on 30/10. 

251. Winding Cisticola  Cisticola marginatus:  4 were on the west bank of the Shire River south of Mvuu in Liwonde NP on 22/10.

252. Wailing Cisticola  Cisticola lais:  4 were seen on Nyika Plateau en route to and from Zovo Chipolo on 24/10 and 10+ were seen on the plateau on 26/10.

253. Churring Cisticola  Cisticola njombe:  Fairly common in Nyika NP with up to 12 at Chelinda from 23-27/10, 2 west of Chelinda on 24/10, and 3 on the plateau on 25/10.

254. Croaking Cisticola  Cisticola natalensis:  1 was on the banks of the Shire River south of Mvuu in Liwonde NP on 21/10 with another seen south of Mvuu on 22/10. 

255. Wing-snapping Cisticola  (Ayre’s Cloud Cisticola)  Cisticola ayresii:  Not uncommon in Nyika NP but hard to see well with 1 at Chelinda on 23/10, 1 near Zovo Chipolo and 2 west of Chelinda on 24/10, 2 on the plateau on 25/10, and 1 at Chelinda on 26/10.

256. Spotted Flycatcher  Muscicapa striata:  1 was at the roadside acacias on the Nyika Plateau on 26/10.  At Vwaza Marsh 1 was seen frequently around the Kazuni Safari Camp on 27-30/10, another was north of there on 27/10 and 1 west of there on 30/10.

257. African Dusky Flycatcher  Muscicapa adusta:  1 was seen late afternoon at the Ku Chawe Inn, Zomba on 17-18/10 with 2 more elsewhere on the plateau on 18/10, and 1 was on the Nyika Plateau on 26/10.

258. Ashy Flycatcher (Blue-grey Flycatcher)  Muscicapa caerulescens:  1 was seen well along the road between the Ku Chawe Inn and the Mulunguzi Dam on 18/10.

259. Grey Tit-Flycatcher (Fan-tailed Flycatcher) Myioparus plumbeus:  A pair showed well near Mvuu Camp in Liwonde NP on 21/10.

260. White-eyed Slaty Flycatcher  Dioptrornis fischeri: 1 showed well on the plateau in Nyika NP on 25/10.

261. Southern Black Flycatcher Melaenornis pammelaina:  A pair and a separate adult were at the Dzalanyama Forest on 16/10 and 1 was south of Mvuu in Liwonde NP on 21/10.

262. Malawi Batis  Batis dimorpha:  On the Zomba Plateau 6 were seen on 18/10 but just 1 female was seen there on 19/10.  In Nyika NP a male was near Chelinda Lodge on 23/10, 2 males and a female were at Zovo Chipolo Forest on 24/10 and a pair were in Chowo Forest on 26/10. 

263. Chinspot Batis  Batis molitor:  A male was at Lilongwe NS on 15/10 and a male at Dzalanyama Forest on 16/10.   In Liwonde NP 3 were in the Mvuu area on 20/10, 1 was near Mvuu Camp on 21/10, and 2 were at Mvuu Lodge on 22/10.  At Vwaza Marsh a pair were infrequently seen at Kazuni Safari Camp on 27-30/10.

264. Black-throated Wattle-Eye  Platysteira peltata:  A male was at the top end of the Botanical Gardens at Zomba on 17/10 and another was in JW’s garden there on 19/10, and 2 pairs were at Makuzi Beach on 30/10-1/11. 

265. Livingstone’s Flycatcher  Erythrocercus livingstonei:  In Liwonde NP a pair were seen down to a few feet at Mvuu Lodge on 20/10 and 1 was just south of Mvuu Camp on 21/10.

266. White-tailed Blue Flycatcher  Elminia albicauda:  1 was feeding in bushes along a dry riverbed at the Dzalanyama Forest on 16/10.

267. White-tailed Elminia  (White-tailed Crested Flycatcher)  Elminia albonotata:  1 was in JW’s garden at Zomba on 17/10, up to 6 were on the Zomba Plateau on 18-19/10, and 5 were at Zovo Chipolo Forest in Nyika NP on 24/10 with 2 there on 26/10.

268. African Paradise Flycatcher  Terpsiphone viridis:  9 including a nesting pair were at the Dzalanyama Forest on 16/10.  At Vwaza Marsh a male was seen infrequently around the Kazuni Safari Camp on 27-30/10, and 1 was at Makuzi Beach on 1/11.

269. Brubru  Nilaus afer:  A pair were amongst a mixed feeding flock in the Dzalanyama Forest on 16/10 and 1 was east of Mvuu in Liwonde NP on 20/10.

270. Black-backed Puffback  (Southern Puffback)  Dryoscopus cubia:  A very common species with 3 at Lilongwe NS on 15/10, 2 at Dzalanyama Forest on 16/10,  3 at Heuglin’s Lodge and 1 in JW’s garden in Zomba on 17/10, up to 6 on the Zomba Plateau on 18-19/10,  a pair at Mvuu Lodge in Liwonde NP on 19-22/10, up to 4 seen around Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10, and a pair at Makuzi Beach on 31/10-1/11.

271. Brown-crowned Tchagra  (Three-streaked Tchagra) Tchagra australis:  Proved to be fairly common at Vwaza Marsh but not seen elsewhere, with 1 or 2 regularly around the Kazuni Camps on 27-30/10, 3 around the west shore of Kazuni Lake on 28/10, and 4 to the north and west of the lake on 30/10.

272. Black-crowned Tchagra  Tchagra senegalis:  1 was at the Lilongwe NS on 15/10, 1 was at the Dzalanyama Forest on 16/10, 1 was north of Zomba on 17/10, 1 was at Mvuu Lodge in Liwonde NP on 20/10, and 1 was east of Kazuni Lake at Vwaza Marsh on 29/10.

273. Tropical Boubou  Laniarius aethiopicus:  A common species with a pair at Heuglin’s Lodge 15-17/10, a pair at Lilongwe NS on 15/10, a pair around the Ku Chawe Inn, Zomba Plateau on 18-19/10,  2 around Mvuu in Liwonde NP on 19-22/10,  just 1 on the Nyika Plateau on 26/10, a pair at the Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 29-30/10 with 5 seen on a drive to the north and west of there on 30/10, and a pair at Makuzi Beach on 1/11.

274. Fulleborne’s Boubou  (Black Boubou)  Laniarius fuelleborni:  3 were calling in Zovo Chipolo Forest in Nyika NP on 24/10 and after a long wait a pair showed reasonably well there on 26/10, and a male showed well at the dambo crossing below Chelinda Lodge on 27/10. 

275. Orange-breasted Bush-Shrike  (Sulphour-breasted Bush-Shrike)  Telophorus sulfureopectus:  1 was at Lilongwe NS on 15/10, 1 at the top end of the Botanical Gardens at Zomba on 17/10, 1 or 2 were regularly at Mvuu Lodge and Mvuu Camp in Liwonde NP on 20-22/10, 1 or 2 were regularly at Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 28-30/10, and 1 was at Makuzi Beach on 1/11.

276. Black-fronted Bush-Shrike  Telophorus nigrifrons:  1 showed very well in the Chowo Forest in Nyika NP on 26/10.

277. Grey-headed Bush-Shrike  Malaconotus blanchoti:  1 was near the Dzalanyama Forest Lodge on 16/10 and 1 was at the Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 28/10.

278. Common Fiscal  (Fiscal Shrike)  Lanius collaris:  5 were at the Lilongwe NS on 15/10, 1 was in the Dzalanyama Forest on 16/10, and in Nyika NP 1 or 2 were seen regularly west of Chelinda from 23-27/10 with up to 2 more seen elsewhere on the plateau on 24-26/10. 

279. White Helmet Shrike  Prionops plumatus:  A flock of 15 were at Mvuu in Liwonde NP on 20/10 and 12 were south of Mvuu on 21/10.

280. Retz’s Helmet Shrike  (Red-billed Helmet Shrike)  Prionops retzii:  A party of 7 were at Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza  Marsh on 28/10.

281. Waller’s Starling  (Waller’s Red-winged Starling)  Onychognathus walleri:  12 were seen around Zovo Chipolo in Nyika NP on 24/10 with 3 there on 26/10.

282. Miombo Blue-eared Starling  (Lesser Blue-eared Starling)  Lamprotornis elisabeth:  1 was north of Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 27/10, 1 was west of the lake on 28/10, 6 were at the Kazuni camps on 29/10, and 2 were to the west the lake on 30/10.

283. Greater Blue-eared Starling  Lamprotornis chalybaeus:  Common in Liwonde NP with up to 30 around Mvuu from 20-22/10.

284. Meve’s Starling  (Long-tailed Starling)  Lamprotornis mevesii:  Very common in Liwonde NP with up to 200 around Mvuu from 20-22/10.

285. Violet-backed Starling  (Plum-coloured Starling)  Cinnyricinclus leucogaster:  A male was at the Dzalanyama Forest Lodge on 16/10, 3 were near Mvuu Camp in Liwonde NP on 20-21/10, 10 were on the Nyika Plateau on 26/10, and a female was near Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 27/10 with 5 at Kazuni Camp on 29/10 and 2 north of there on 30/10.

286. Yellow-billed Oxpecker  Buphagus africanus:  14 were attending a large herd of Buffalo to the north of the South Rukuru River at Vwaza Marsh on 30/10.

287. Red-billed Oxpecker  Buphagus erythrorhynchus:  Up to 3 were amongst Hippos along the Shire River on Liwonde NP on 20-21/10 and up to 4 were on Hippos at Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10.

288. Collared Sunbird  Hedydipna collaris:  3 were at Heuglin’s Lodge and 3 were in JW’s garden on 17/10, and up to 7 were at the Ku Chawe Inn and more generally around the Zomba Plateau on 17-19/10.

289. Olive Sunbird  Cyanomitra olivacea:  1 was at Heuglin’s Lodge and 1 was in JW’s garden at Zomba on 17/10, and 20+ were seen on the Zomba Plateau on 18-19/10.

290. Amethyst Sunbird  (Black Sunbird)  Chalcomitra amethystina:  A male was at the Dzalanyama Forest Lodge on 16/10.

291. Scarlet-chested Sunbird  Chalcomitra senegalensis:  A male and female were at the Dzalanyama Forest Lodge on 16/10, 2 males were at Heuglin’s Lodge on 17/10, a male was near Mvuu Camp in Liwonde NP on 20/10, and 5 were feeding in a flowering acacia at Kazuni Lake at Vwaza Marsh on 28/10 with a male at the Kazuni Safari Camp on 29/10.

292. White-bellied Sunbird  Cinnyris talatala:  A female and an immature male were south of Mvuu Camp in Liwonde NP on 21/10.

293. Variable Sunbird  (Yellow-bellied Sunbird)  Cinnyris venustus:  5 including a juvenile were at Heuglin’s Lodge on 15-17/10, 2 were south of Mvuu in Liwonde NP on 21/10 and up to 5 were around Makuzi Beach on 30/10-1/11.

294. Forest Double-collared Sunbird  Cinnyris fuelleborni :  A male was at the Ku Chawe Inn, Zomba on 17/10, and up to 7 were seen on the Zomba Plateau on 18-19/10.  In Nyika NP 3 were in Zovo Chipolo Forest on 24/10 and 2 there on 26/10.   

295. Ludwig’s Double-collared Sunbird  Cinnyris ludovicensis:  2 males were in the vicinity of Chelinda Camp in Nyika NP on 23/10 and a female was at Chelinda Lodge on 25/10. 

296. Miombo Double-collared Sunbird  Cinnyris manoensis:  A male was at Dzalanyama Forest Lodge on 16/10 and another at the Ku Chawe Inn on the Zomba Plateau on 18/10.

297. Purple-banded Sunbird  Cinnyris bifasciatus:  2 pairs were regularly around Makuzi Beach on 30/10-1/11.

298. Malachite Sunbird  (Yellow-tufted Malachite Sunbird)  Nectarinia famosa:  A male was near Chelinda Dam in Nyika NP on 23/10, a male again at Chelinda on 26/10 and a pair there on 27/10.

299. Scarlet-tufted Sunbird  (Red-tufted Malachite Sunbird)  Nectarinia johnstoni :  A non-breeding plumaged male was at Chelinda Camp in Nyika NP on 23/10.

300. African Yellow White-eye  Zosterops senegalensis:  A fairly common species with 1 at Heuglin’s Lodge on 15/10, 15+ on the Zomba Plateau on 18-19/10,  and in Nyika NP up to 10 at Chelinda from 23-27/10, 10+ in Zovo Chipolo Forest on 24/10,  and 6+ on the plateau on 25-26/10.

301. Baglafecht Weaver  Ploceus baglafecht nyikae:  A female or immature was below Chelinda Lodge in Nyika NP on 26/10.

302. Golden Weaver (Holub’s Golden Weaver)  Ploceus xanthops:  A female was at the Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 27/10 with a male and 2 females there on 29/10 and 30/10.  

303. Yellow Weaver (African Golden Weaver) Ploceus subaureus:  2 colonies with about 30 birds present were at Makuzi Beach on 30/10-1/11. 

304. Southern Brown-throated Weaver  Ploceus xanthopterus:  At Liwonde NP small numbers were breeding on the inlet at Mvuu Lodge and 4-5 could be seen daily from 19-22/10, with 3 more on the Shire River near Mvuu Camp on 21/10.

305. Lesser Masked Weaver  Ploceus intermedius:  2 were at Heuglin’s Lodge on 17/10, a colony of 50+ was on a small island on the Shire River at Mvuu Lodge in Liwonde NP on 19-22/10, and c100 were at Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 27/10 though thereafter only a few were present. 

306. Village Weaver  (Spotted-backed Weaver)  Ploceus cucullatus:  Fairly common near to human habitation with 3 at Heuglin’s Lodge and a colony of 30+ at the Lilongwe NS on 15/10,  3 seen along the Shire River near Mvuu Camp on 19/10 with 10+ there on 21/10, and 10+ near Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 30/10.

307. Spectacled Weaver  Ploceus ocularis:  A male was at Heuglin’s Lodge on 17/10 and 5+ were along the Shire River south of Mvuu in Liwonde NP on 21/10.

308. Dark-backed Weaver (Forest Weaver) Ploceus bicolor:  3 showed well in JW’s garden at Zomba on 17/10 and 1 was calling there on 19/10.

309. Red-headed Weaver  Anaplectes melanotis:  In Liwonde NP 3 males and a female were at nests south of Mvuu Camp and a pair were east of Mvuu on 20/10, 2 were along the east bank of the Shire River north of Mvuu on 21/10 and a male was south of Mvuu on 22/10.

310. Red-billed Quelea  Quelea quelea:  Flocks of 250+ were seen along the Shire River at Liwonde NP on 19/10 and 21/10.

311. Yellow Bishop  (Yellow-rumped Bishop/Widow) Euplectes capensis:  A non-breeding male and 3 females were at Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 27/10.

312. Montane Widowbird  (Mountain Marsh Widow)  Euplectes psammocromius:  In Nyika NP fairly easy to see at Chelinda with 15 (including 2 breeding plumaged males) there on 23/10 and over 100 (again only 2 breeding plumaged males) there on 27/10,  50+ (1 male) en route to Zovo Chipolo Forest and 10 (2 males) west of Chelinda on 24/10 and c10 on the plateau on 26/10.

313. Red-collared Widowbird  Euplectes ardens:  A flock of 15 were west of Chelinda in Nyika NP on 24/10 and over 200 were on the plateau there on 26/10.

314. White-browed Sparrow-Weaver  Plocepasser mahali:  In Liwonde NP from 19-22/10 common around Mvuu and abundant in the adjacent mopane woodlands with for example 100+ there on 20/10.

315. House Sparrow  Passer domesticus:  Only seen in small numbers whilst driving through Lilongwe on 15-17/10.

316. Northern Grey-headed Sparrow  Passer griseus:  4 were at Heuglin’s Lodge on 17/10 and 3 were at Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 27/10 with 2 there on 28/10. 

317. Southern Grey-headed Sparrow  Passer diffuses:  c10 were in mopane woodlands east of Mvuu in Liwonde NP on 20/10 with 20+ at the Mpthapalala Road waterhole there on 21/10.

318. Yellow-throated Petronia  Petronia supercilliaris:  1 was to the north-west of Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 30/10.

319. Pin-tailed Whydah  Vidua macroura:  A female was near Mvuu Lodge in Liwonde NP on 22/10, a female at Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 28/10, and 7 (including 2 males) were behind Makuzi Beach on 1/11.

320. Village Indigobird  (Steel-blue Widowfinch) Vidua chalybeata:  A flock of up 500 regularly frequented Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10, all being females or non-breeding males. 

321. Green-winged Pytilia  (Melba Finch)  Pytilia melba:  2 were at the Lilongwe NS on 15/10,  1 was near Mvuu Camp in Liwonde NP on 20/10 and another south of Mvuu on 21/10, 2 were at the west end of Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 28/10 and 3 at Kazuni Camp on 29/10.

322. Red-throated Twinspot  (Peter’s Twinspot)  Hypargos niveoguttatus:  12+ were at the Lilongwe NS on 15/10, 1 was the top end of the Botanical Gardens at Zomba on 17/10 and 1 was seen briefly at Makuzi Beach on 30/10.

323. African Firefinch (Blue-billed Firefinch)  Lagonisticta rubricata:  A male was below Chelinda Lodge in Nyika NP on 26/10 and a male was at Makuzi Beach on 1/11.

324. Red-billed Firefinch  Lagonisticta senegata:  A party of 4 were at Heuglin’s Lodge on 15/10.

325. Jameson’s Firefinch  Lagonisticta rhodopareia:  A male was at the Lilongwe NS on 15/10, a pair were near the Kazuni administration buildings at Vwaza Marsh on 29/10, and 2 pairs were behind Makuzi Beach on 1/11.

326. Blue Waxbill (Southern Cordonbleu) Uraeginthus angolensis:  A fairly common species with up to 10 at Heuglin’s Lodge 15-17/10,  a pair at the Lilongwe NS on 15/10, 2 near Mvuu in Liwonde NP on 20/10, 10+ at Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10, and 20+ north-west of Lake Kazuni on 30/10.

327. Yellow-bellied Waxbill  (East African Swee)  Coccopygia quartinia:  1 was at the roadside acacias on the Nyika Plateau on 26/10.

328. Common Waxbill  Estrilda astrild:  10 were at Heuglin’s Lodge on 17/10 and 6 were along the Shire River at Liwonde NP on 19/10 with 2 south of Mvuu on 21/10.  In Nyika NP up to 12 were at Chelinda from 23-27/10 and a flock of 50+ on the plateau on 25/10.  Up to 10 were at Makuzi Beach on 30/10-1/11.

329. Bronze Mannikin  Spermestes cucullata:  c10 were at the Mulunguzi Dam on Zomba Plateau on 19/10, 20 were near the village east of Lake Kazuni at Vwaza Marsh on 29/10, and up to 15 were around Makuzi Beach on 30/10-1/11.

330. Red-backed Mannikin  Spermestes nigriceps:  30+ were at the Ku Chawe Inn on the Zomba Plateau on 18/10 and 2 were at the Mulunguzi Dam there on 19/10.

331. Golden-breasted Bunting  Emberiza flaviventris:  A pair were near the Dzalanyama Forest Lodge on 16/10.

332. Cinnamon-breasted Bunting  Emberiza tahapsi:  1 was at Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 27/10.

333. Yellow-fronted Canary  Serinus mozambicus:  A pair were near Mvuu Camp in Liwonde NP on 20-21/10, up to 5 were at Kazuni Safari Camp at Vwaza Marsh on 27-30/10, and a pair were at Makuzi Beach on 30/10-1/11.

334. Brimstone Canary  (Bully Canary) Serinus sulphuratus:  A male was feeding on proteas on the Nyika Plateau on 26/10. 

335. Yellow-crowned Canary  Serinus flavivertes: In Nyika NP common around Chelinda where up to 20 were seen from 23-27/10 and10 were on the plateau en route to Zovo Chipolo on 24/10. 

336. Southern Citril  Serinus hyposticus:  1 pair was near the bridge before the Trout Farm and another pair near the Mulunguzi Nature Trail on the Zomba Plateau on 18/10.

337. Reichard’s Seed-eater (Stripe-breasted Seed-eater) Serinus reichardi:  5 were in mixed feeding flocks at Dzalanyama Forest on 16/10.

338. Yellow-browed Seed-eater  Serinus whytii:  1 was near Chelinda Dam in Nyika NP on 23/10 and 3 were at the dambo crossing below Chelinda Lodge on 26/10.
