Species List

The number of species shown undoubtedly understates the number of each species seen, or which could have been seen.  I would rather get a good look at one bird in a flock than count how many there were, and am more interested in picking out new species in a bird wave than looking at species others have identified but that I have seen before.  I'm also not very good at remembering to record new individuals of species seen previously that day, which will also tend to understate numbers.

The letter 'h' denotes that the bird was heard but not seen.  The number in brackets after each species represents the species number in Jeyarajasingam and Pearson.

29.         Large Hawk-Cuckoo  (Cuculus sparveriodes)  (232)  1 Telekom Loop, Bukit Fraser (27.2).  These birds were calling everywhere the whole time at Bukit Fraser, but seeing one was a completely different matter - even the one we eventually saw took ages to pin down.

38.         House (Little) Swift  (Apus affinis)  (289)  common throughout Bukit Fraser (26.2 - 1.3).  Note that in "A Guide to the Swifts and Treeswifts of the World" by Chantler & Driessens, these birds are split into 2 species.  They show Little Swift (Apus affinis) occurring in Africa and Asia as far east as India and Bangladesh, and a new species, House Swift (Apus nipalensis) occurring from Nepal east through China and South East Asia as far as Japan and Java.  I understand that this is also the approach adopted in "Birds of the World".  If this treatment were followed, the Bukit Fraser birds would be House Swifts (Apus nipalensis).

50.         Black-browed Barbet  (Megalaima oorti)  (333)  1 Jalan Lady Maxwell, Bukit Fraser (26.2 p.m.), 1 Telekom Loop, Bukit Fraser (27.2)  Again, these were calling everywhere, but were very difficult to see.

80.         Ashy Drongo  (Dicrurus leucophaeus)  (427)  1 Taman Alam Kuala Selangor (3.3 p.m.).  The local race is the very dark race nigrescens - this is almost black, but the underparts are slightly paler than the upperparts.

81.         Bronzed Drongo  (Dicrurus aeneus)  (429)  n New Road (top), Bukit Fraser (27.2), 1 Bishop's Trail, Bukit Fraser (28.2 )

107.     Malaysian Whistling Thrush  (Myiophonus robinsoni)  (511)  1 Bishop's Trail, Bukit Fraser (2.3)  This was undoubtedly the highlight of the whole trip, and made the trip a success all on its own.  It was, however, far from easy - there was only one spot in the Bukit Fraser area where it was being seen at all regularly during my visit, and it was very difficult even here.  It took me four visits, and a total of over 5 hours waiting before I finally got brief but extremely satisfying views.  Its global range is restricted to a small section of the Titiwangsa Range, and the only easily accessible sites for it are the Genting Highlands, Bukit Fraser and the Cameron Highlands.  Given the continued development of the Genting Highlands, it may not be easy to find there these days, and if it is as elusive and difficult in the Cameron Highlands as it is in Bukit Fraser, then this is a tricky bird to find indeed.  It is well worth asking around for recent sightings when you get to Fraser's - it had been seen reasonably regularly, including four consecutive mornings the previous week at our stakeout, but persistence and patience will certainly be required.
