Introduction
We traveled to Mexico from Chile, via a stopover in Panama. This was the last leg of an 11 month trip of pretty much non stop travelling and birding, and towards the end we were pretty knackered.
We spent the first two weeks in West Mexico with Jim Pattinson and his girlfriend Jane Barnes and hired a car. When they returned to the UK we flew toThe Yucatan and travelled around using public transport.
Mexico is a great place to go birding and besides some great birds the people are friendly, the food is excellent and the locals certainly appreciate it if you make an effort with the language. Indeed, away from tourist areas most people do not speak much English, so a little Spanish is very useful. Many coastal areas are quite commercialised, but as soon as you move away from these areas the real Mexico is waiting to be explored.
Highlights included many superb birds on Volcan de Nieve, with a spectacular backdrop and Barranca Rancho Liebre on the Durango Highway, which again is a spectacular place with so many great birds. Also the bird rich forest around Felipe Carrillo Puerto was very rewarding.
Apart from the birding there is some spectacular scenery, including some impressive volcanoes and some superb Mayan sites in The Yucatan.
