White-naped Cranes

Mongolia, August 12th to August 21st 2005

  • Many of the birds seen are obviously common in Europe. As I live in Vietnam however, I had a blast with birds like Twite:-) Just wish I knew my waders better. I do not think that August is the best time, as migration had not yet set in...Hanno Stamm reports.

Nature trip to Mongolia Spring 2004.

  • This is the report of a nature trip through Mongolia performed by Theo Bakker, Hans Glorie, Fred Koning and Piet Veel (all dutch). This trip roughly falls apart in three items: first a 16 day west- and southward loop to the Gobi, ending in Dalanzadgad, then  a three day visit to the Hustai NP, followed by a three day visit to Jalman Meadows and Terelj....Piet Veel reports

Mongolia
August 12th to August 16th 2001

  • Today, we were off to Karakorum, the ancient capital established by Genghis Khan. Not much left of its former splendor, but the draw here is the monastery of Erdenezuu. Really nice, and all that, but there was a small distraction: masses of Demoiselle Cranes moving overhead....Hanno Stamm reports

Recommended travel guides to Mongolia

Lonely Planet: Mongolia
Bradley Mayhew: Buy from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk

  • Mongolia is an exotic, romantic, adventurous destination. This guide provides comprehensive data on how to get there, where to stay, where to eat and what to do...."I used this prior to my third trip to Mongolia; I'm heading again this summer and it is certainly very much of use. There's scope for more detail in some areas though. Travelling to Mongolia isn't easy to plan as information isn't as plentiful as elsewhere so this is a good start"
