Taroudant, Morocco 4/4/2004- 11/04/2004,
Taroudant is in the centre of the Sous Valley between
the High Atlas and Anti Atlas. Definitely worth visiting in Spring. The surrounding
countryside is alive with birds and easily accessed from the town.
I recommend cycling as the minor roads are quiet and flat.
1] Opposite the Palais Salam hotel in the town there is a beautiful park.
Saw White Stork, Common Kestrel, Blackcap, House Bunting, Common Swift, Swallow,
Spotless Starling, Sardinian Warbler, Spanish Sparrow, House Sparrow, Blackbird,
Collared Dove.
2] Take minor road to Agadir. About 2 km. there is a
sign 'Agriculture Vincente' This lane is only suitable for walking or cycling.
Follow the irrigation pipes and hedgerows.
Ceril Bunting, Serin, Red Rump Swallow, Common Bulbul, Whitethroat, Chaffinch,
Goldfinch, Green finch, Blackcap, House Bunting,Crested Lark, Spanish Sparrow,
House Sparrow, Spotless Starling, Turtle Dove.
There is a wadi at the end of the lane where I saw a Short Eared Owl and Common
Bulbul.
3] Take minor road due north to foothills of the Atlas
mountains.
After inauspicious start this road is definitely worth persevering with.I cycled
and walked about 9 km.It does not take long to escape the town and the views
of the Atlas mountains are wonderful.
White Stork and Cattle Egrets in rubbish dump to right. Dessert Wheatear, Grey
Shrike, Woodchat Shrike, Rufus Scrub Robin, Sardinian Warbler, Subalpine Warbler,
