A male flying past the Pink Tower, Kosi, 10th; a male seen well, foraging on the road in one of the forests of the Terai, 13th; pair flushed by the elephant, Chitwan, 15th.

2.  Swamp Francolin Francolinus gularis
Heard at the Pink Tower, Kosi, 10th; regularly heard in the morning, 2 briefly seen, in the reeds along the embankment, Kosi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, 11th; sev. heard (early morning and at 1.30 p.m.), 2 in flight and 2 seen while moving along the reeds edge, in the fog, Kosi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, 12th.

( )   2 partridges, seen running through the bamboo at upper slopes of Pulchowki mountain on 17th, were probably Hill Partridges Arborophila torqeola.

1 in a mixed species flock (with Green Magpie, Racket-tailed Drongos, both Necklaced Laughingthrushes and sev. species of woodpecker) at Tiger Tops jungle, Chitwan, 14-15th.

281.     Streak-breasted Scimitar-Babbler Pomatorhinus ruficollis
A possible at Nagarjung on 5th; 3 ravine, lower slope of Pulchowki mountain, 18th. One took 10 minutes to get a caterpillar out of a branch, showing itself quite well. 1 seen among a flock of White-throated Laughingthrushes, Shivapuri Reserve, 19th.

282.     Black-chinned Babbler Stachyris pyrrhops
2-4 upper slopes Pulchowki mountain, 17th; sev. in a mixed flock (with Rufous-winged and Nepal Fulvetta, Grey-hooded and Grey-cheeked Warbler and Whiskered Yuhina), ravine, lower slope Pulchowki mountain; 10+ in a mixed flock (with Nepal Fulvetta, Blue-winged Minla and Seicerces warblers) “red-brick buildings”, Godaveri, 18th; 3+ Shivapuri Reserve, 19th.

283.     Grey-throated Babbler Stachyris nigriceps
10+ (mixed with Striped Tit-Babblers) at the edge of Tiger Tops jungle, Chitwan, 15th; 4+ (in a mixed flock with 2 species of minivet, Rufous-gorgeted Flycatcher, Orange-bellied Leafbird and Black-eared Shrike-Babbler) Shivapuri Reserve, 19th.

3 at Bhimble entrance, Chitwan, 14th; 20+ (mixed with Grey-throated Babblers) at the edge of Tiger Tops jungle, Chitwan, 15th.

Groups of 15+ and 3 foraging among the bamboo stands, upper slopes Pulchowki mountain, 17th. These birds were extremely hard to get into view – RH only saw the tail of one bird, and the head of another, CQ saw even less, and HvdM saw none.

318.     Richard’s Pipit Anthus richardi
5 at Kosi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, 12th. All were noticed by their call, as they flew high overhead from the sandbanks in Kosi river towards the east.

1 flushed and consequently heard (size about that of a Tawny Pipit but with a different call) at Rapti river crossing early in the morning, Chitwan on 15th, was probably this species.

2 winter-plumaged, at Rapti River, Hetauda, 9th (RH only).

1. Rhesus Maqaque
3+ Nagarjung and 10s Swayambunath temple, Kathmandu 8th; 4 between Rapti river crossing and Bhimble entrance, Chitwan, 15th (this (sub?)species had a shorter tail and thicker fur than the ones seen in and near Kathmandu); 8 between Narayangadh and Kathmandu, 16th.

2. Common Langur Monkey
5 Tiger Tops jungle, Chitwan, 14th; 10 between Narayangadh and Kathmandu, 16th.

3. Water Buffalo
1 in the fields near Aqua Birds Tented Camp in ealy morning, being chased away from the crops by villagers, with one at Kosi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, 11th.

4. Gangetic Dolphin
2 in a still bend in Kosi river, about 1 km north of the entrance, Kosi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, 11th.

5. Indian One-horned Rhinoceros
1 seen in the low grass at the edge of Rapti river, Chitwan, 14th, while we were on foot in the riverine forest (and this animal is big!).

6. Hog Deer
1 at Kosi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, 11th; male and 5 females in the riverine forest, Chitwan, 14th; 10+ elephant ride, Chitwan, 15th.

7. Spotted Deer
Groups of 3 and 8 (male and 7 females) in the riverine forest, Chitwan, 14th, with groups of 1, 9 and 4 there on 15th; 15+ elephant ride, Chitwan, 15th.

8. Muntjak Deer
2 in the riverine forest, Chitwan, 14th.

9. Squirrel spec.
Sev. at Pulchowki mountain on 6th and 17th.

2, embankment Kosi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, 12th; sev. elephant ride, Chitwan, 15th.

3 on the embankment at Kosi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, 12th; sev. heard at night, Meghauli, Chitwan, 13-15th; 1 near Tiger Tops jungle, 14th.

 

Recorded Reptiles

1. Mugger Crocodile

1 at a sandbank in Kosi river, Kosi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, 11th; 1 in a small marsh of Kosi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, 12th; 1 in Rapti river, Chitwan, 15th.

(  )  Python species

(Rather big) tracks were found in the sand on the embankment north of the entrance, Kosi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, on 11th.

Recorded dragonflies

Several Scarlet Dragonflies Crocothemis erythraea at small ponds near Rapti River at Hetauda on 9th was the only species identified with certainty. Several Darters Sympetrum species were seen there as well, some resembling Black Darter Sympetrum danae.

2 different species of dragonfly were seen in a small stream in Tiger Tops jungle on 15th.

Recorded butterflies

Several of a probable Satyrium species were seen near a small stream in Tiger Tops jungle, Chitwan on 15th.

A species superficially resembling Cupido alcetas was seen at Kosi Tappu Wildlife Reserve on 11th.

A Neptis species resembling Neptis sappho was seen at the garden of Avocado Motel,   Hetauda on 9th.

A Parage species was seen at Shivapuri Reserve on 19th.

Several Danaus chrysippus were encountered at Kosi Tappu Wildlife Reserve on 11th.
