A Report from birdtours.co.uk

Birdwatching  Trip to Holland, January 2001,

Arnau Bonan Barfull

Introduction

This is a report of the short birdwatching trip done in winter 2001 in Holland. We went by van, where we slept, allowing us to sleep close to good places for birdwatching. We got information about good places for Geese from Eurobirdnet, and thanks to some Dutch birdwatchers, we had information about different places, and the species seen lately in each one.

9th-1-2001

We slept in Zierikzee. We woke up, and after having breakfast we took the van and drove direction Serooskerke. Near Zierikzee we found a group of  Brent, more or less 1000 individuals, and while we were watching it, a group of four White-fronted Goose passed flying direction to the sea . We took a small road that reaches the sea and follows the sealine. There was like a small lake close to the sea plenty of ducks where we saw some Gadwalls, Wigeons and a pair of Pintails. Following the road we found a group of more or less 800 Barnacles with one White-fronted Goose and some Greylag Goose. Almost reaching the main road, we stopped to see some passerines and we found a group of Grey Partridge.
We went to eat something in Serooskerke, and going out of the town a male Merlin flew in front of the van.
We went to Brouwersdam. We parked in the inland side in a place where there is water coming from the sea and a kind of small house. We went to the sea coast and we saw quite a lot of different species. First we birdwatched in a kind of  entrance of sand to the sea that creates a small bay, and we saw one Great Northern Diver and two Black-throated Diver , one Red-necked Grebe and one Slavonian Grebe, two males and one female of Long-tailed Duck, lots of Eiders, more than sixty Common Goldeneye and some Red-breasted Merganser. We talked with some Dutch birdwatchers that told us that they had already seen seals in the inland side of the dyke, so we were there and we saw two Seals (Phoca vitulina), and also Little Gull.
We drove north and we went south by the motorway of the sea side. We did not see many species in the north part of the dyke, and we stopped at the same place as before, where we talked with some Belgian birdwatchers that told us that a good place for Geese is driving east from Scharendijke. We went there and we drove east as they told us, but we just found a group of Brents, and also two Spoonbills and a Kingfisher. We went to sleep at Den Bommel, in Goeree-Overflakkee. A thing that surprised us was the big amount of Common Pheasant that we saw during the day, and the confident they are.

After having breakfast we look for the "molenweg", a road that goes around fields and that some people had recommended us. The place was really good for Geese, as we saw lots. We saw several groups of Barnacles and White-fronted Goose. In one group of White-fronted Goose with some Greylag Goose we found a group of 13 Lesser White-fronted Goose: we saw them very well as they were quite close to us.  We continued going around the area taking different roads, and quite close to town we found a group of White-fronted Goose with two Bean Goose "rossicus", and late we saw another Lesser White-fronted Goose in the middle of a group of White-fronted Goose. That morning we also saw two Egyptian Goose, several Common Teals and lots of  Wigeons.
We went to Strijensas, and leaving the town we found a group of Barnacles and Greylag Goose, with some White-fronted Goose.
Then we went to Goudswaard, another place that people had recommended us. We found a group of Barnacles with some Greylag Goose, and two Ross's Goose: one white morph and the other blue morph. There we met a Dutch birdwatcher that told us that last week some Red-breasted Goose were seen in another field that can be seen from a wood hide, so he took us there. There was a group of Barnacles, and we searched for Red-breasted, but we were not lucky and we found four Lesser Canada Goose ( probably "minima"), that are not considered wild in Holland. There we also saw one Rough-legged Buzzard, one Great White Egret and lots of Fieldfares.
After we went to Oostvoorne, but when we arrived there it was almost dark, we did a small walk but we did not see anything interesting, just two Snipes.
We went to sleep in Overveen, a small town close to Haarlem.

12th-1-2001

In the morning we walked in the National Park of Zuid-Kennemerland. The Park is quite big, and after walking for a while, we decided to go to the museum and ask people about where some species can be found. After talking with one man of the museum, we decided to leave the place. We wanted to go to the seaport of Ijmuiden, a place that people recommended us for seabirds, but we also wanted to go to Texel that day to try to see the male King Eider that has been there for some time. Because of the few light hours, we drove to Texel.  During the walk in the Park and in the Museum we saw Wigeons, Common Pochard, a Green Woodpecker, some Redwings, Goldcrest, Marsh Tit and Nuthatch.
We took the ferry to Texel at 12:35. We looked for the Nioz harbour where the King Eider had been usually seen, and it took some time to find the correct place. First we searched in front of the Nioz building, where we saw one Great Northern Diver, and then we walked east until we found the Nioz harbour. There were some birdwatchers there, and after searching for the bird, we asked them if they had seen it. They told us that the bird was not there and probably had move to the other side of the "bay", before arriving at Oudeschild, where there is a kind of sculpture made of green-glass. We came back where we had the car and we drove there. Once we parked the car, we started looking at every bird on the sea. There were a lot of Eiders and Tufted Ducks, and after searching for a while, we found it!!. It was quite far away but we saw it quite well with the telescopes. In Texel we also saw 37 Brents, two Egyptian Goose, some Great Black-backed Gull and two Hen Harriers.
After seeing that spectacular species, we went to Amsterdam.
