Bibliography

Identification

The Birds of South America Vols. 1 & 2 : Ridgely and Tudor- an essential reference, but too bulky to take into the field. I overcame this by videoing plates and selected text on to digital video tapes.
HBW  Wim had compiled a very useful booklet of relevant plates.
A Field guide to the Birds of Peru : Clements and Shany- despite it's shortcomings, the standard reference and indispensable.
Birds of Chile : Jaramillo et al. Not finally published until Autumn 03. Would however be useful.
Raptors of the World : Ferguson Lees and Christie- I photographed the relevant plates. Very useful.
Voices of  Amazonian Birds Vols. 1, 2 & 3 : Schulenberg et al.
Very useful.
Voices of Andean Birds Vols. 1 & 2 : Schulenberg .
Very useful.

Strategy

We arrived in Peru after 7 month's travelling and flew in from Easter Island via Santiago. We arranged accommodation in Lima and pick up from the airport through Wim of Tanager Tours.

We planned this itinerary around a 10 day trip along the Manu road , a week at Explorers Inn and 2 nights at Sandoval Lodge. We did the Manu road trip with Tanager Tours who operate out of Cusco and Arequipa and they organised the transport and accommodation and provided a good guiding service.

We subsequently organised trips to Abra Malaga  and the Santa Eulalia valley and Marcapomacocha with David Geale who organised transport and acted as a guide.

I booked Explorers Inn and Sandoval Lodge from the UK and also the internal flights to Cusco and Puerto Maldonado.

Birding in Peru can be a bit daunting, but at least there is now a reasonable field guide and if you do a bit of homework and get some local help then you will see a lot of good birds.

Planning is the key and we planned this leg of an 11 month trip  to fit in with being in other parts of the world at optimum times.November/ early December is the latest you would want to travel along the Manu road, and by the time we got to Amazonia Lodge it was very wet and some of the trails were flooded. Manu is virtually out of bounds between January and March/April as it is flooded.

Manu road is a fantastic birding experience and we didn't actually go to Manu Lodge in the national park, as this is very expensive. Although you will probably see a few more birds there, the birding  and habitat at Pantiacolla Lodge is similar. In fact Pantiacolla Lodge was one of the highlights of our trip and I can certainly recommend it .

Explorer's Inn is of course famous-The late Ted Parker having put it firmly on the map. It is still good, but there are probably equally as good if not better lodges on the Rio Madre de Dios now.

We organized the hike along the Inca Trail when we were in Cusco and there are plenty of operators who provide a good service. The birding was actually  good on the trail, but the scenery is awesome and Machu Picchu shouldn't be missed by even the most single minded birder.

Abra Malaga and the Santa Eulalia valley trips were excellent- thanks to David's local knowledge and a good driver. Seeing Diademed Sandpiper-plover at Marcapomacocha in the swirling cloud and mist was a once in a lifetime experience.

We decided to go to Lake Titicaca at the last minute, but it was well worthwhile and the endemic Short-winged Grebes performed.

All in all Peru was brilliant and although we spent 5 weeks there I will certainly be going back for more.
