Books

Callan Cohen’s site guide to the Western Cape was invaluable.
Ian Sinclair’s Birds of Southern Africa.

Bird call recordings

Used Guy Gibbon’s 6 CD Set and Len Gilliard’s LBJs. The call of the Pearl spotted Owlet was very useful in calling in small birds, especially in the Kruger where you could not leave your vehicle.

5/10

After a long, tiring flight we landed on time at CapeTown mid afternoon in the rain and wind. A wet 1 hour drive from the airport to Noodhoek saw us booking into the Afton Grove, run by Chris Spengler a local Cape birder.

When the rain cleared a wander around the hotel and immediate area produced the first lifers of the trip. Levaillants Cisticola, Cape Canary, Spotted Prinia, 7 Spotted Dikkops, Bokmakierie, Burcells Coucal, African Goshawk, Kelp Gull, African Marsh Harrier, Af. Sedge Warbler and Yellow rumped Cisticola.  Back at the hotel, Chris gave us some useful “gen” on local sites for the more difficult species. Chris was very helpful, a knowledgeable Cape birder.

6/10

Made an abortive early morning trip to attempt to see Ground Woodpecker at their nest burrows. They must have left the burrows before we arrived, not a sniff.  Picked up quite a few lifers at Kommetje Beach, 3 Cormorant ticks, Hautlaub’s Gull and Af. Oystercatcher.

On Chris Spengler’s recommendation we went to Black Hill and saw Malachite, Orange-b-Sunbirds, Cape Bunting, Cape Rock Thrush, Neddicky, Grassbird, Cape Robin, Cape Siskin and Cape Sugarbird.

Visited Kirstenbosch in the afternoon. A good place to buy bird books and recordings in the bookshop. Saw Spotted Eagle Owl, Olive Thrush, Cape Batis, Black Saw Wing, Lesser DC Sunbird, Rameron Pigeon, Sugarbirds, Cinammon and Cape Turtle Doves. The botanical gardens were worth visiting for the flowers on their own.

7/10  Roo els

Left CT and drove east along the rocky coast to Roo els. It was fairly windy so we decided not to try for the RockJumper at Sir Lowry’s mountain pass.  It was still windy at Roo els but after 30 minutes we had excellent views of a pair of Cape RockJumpers. Also Bully Canary, Cape Gannets.

Stoney Point, Betty’s Bay

Visited the African Penguin colony, about 80 pairs, White fronted Plover.

About 50 km from Swellendam we stopped and watched 60 Blue Cranes feeding in a sheep field + White throated Swallows, Capped Wheatear, Jackal Buzzard, Cape Weaver. A fat Afrikaaner farmer came by and asked us what we doing. He then asked us our opinion on what we thought of S.Africa, to which we replied very positively. As he left his last words on S.Africa was there are too many blacks!!!!   Racism is alive and well in the new S.Africa so it seems. Booked into a campsite in Swellendam, taking a cabin.
