What did we miss?

Only few (near-) endemic birds were missed, notably:
* Southern White-bellied Korhaan - Eupodotis cafra - We didn't have any stake-outs for this species, although it can be found with perseverance at several places in Transvaal. Local birders Gavin and Lindsay Walker told us the species can readily be seen in the Dullstroom district. According to Top Birding Spots, it may also be observed in the Wakkerstroom area, where it prefers longer, dense grasslands at lower altitudes.
* Burchell's Courser - Cursorius rufus - This species may be found along the R355 well north of Katbakkies, as well as in Bushmanland and Namaqualand, areas we didn't visit.
* A number of endemic larks were also missed. Short-clawed Lark is most easily found at Pietersburg reserve. The best place for both Rudd's and Botha's Larks is the Wakkerstroom-Amersfoort area, but these may be very difficult in winter. Monotonous lark can be seen in Kruger NP or in Pilanesberg NP, while Melodious Lark occurs in Mountain Zebra NP and other places. Pink-billed Lark may be found in Suikerbosrand NR, Kalahari Gemsbok NP and Bushmanland. We didn't visit the northwestern part of the country, where Stark's, Barlow's, Sclater's and Red Lark are amongst the best birds to be found. Finchlarks occur in the same region, although Chestnut-backed Finchlark may also be found in Kruger NP and Black-eared Finchlark can be seen little north of Katbakkies. Several of the Karoo species we dipped, such as the finchlarks, Larklike Bunting, Black-headed Canary and Dusky Sunbird, are highly nomadic.
*Neergaard's Sunbird - Nectarinia neergaardi - This endemic sunbird occurs only in the easternmost part of the country. Mkuzi is probably the best bet, although the species may also be encountered at Bonamanzi or False Bay (St. Lucia area).
* Bush Blackcap - Lioptilus nigricapillus - Altitudinal migrant; the species breeds along the road to Sani Pass, but is only present during spring and summer. Other breeding sites are Phongolo Bush NR near Wakkerstroom, Weza forest, Giants Castle Game Reserve and Xumeni Forest, Donnybrook. According to Adam Riley, the species is quite common on Hlatikulu Mountain (near the South African Crane Foundation headquarters).
In winter the species may be found in Queen Elizabeth Park and Doreen Clarke NR, both at Pietermaritzburg.
* African Rock (Yellow-tufted) Pipit - Anthus crenatus - Can be seen in the Wakkerstroom area, Sani Pass and Karoo NP. We thoroughly searched in Lesotho, where it is said to be not uncommon, but none were recorded during our visit. It may be easier to find in summer, when its distinctive song can be heard.
* Yellow-breasted Pipit - Hemimacronyx chloris - Its breeding places are well-known (for directions, see the Wakkerstroom account by John McAllister on www.sabirding.co.za), but apparently the pipits are not present during winter.

Needless to say, breeding endemics such as Mountain Pipit or Damara Tern, or other summer visitors such as Blue Swallow, Black Coucal, Rufous-cheeked and Pennant-winged Nightjar, Lesser Moorhen and Bronze-winged Courser were not present during July.

Other species missed can be picked up in other African countries. Examples are Yellow-fronted Tinkerbird, Yellow-billed Oxpecker (difficult in Kruger NP), Delegorgue's Pigeon (uncommon, Entumeni Forest is a good bet), Green Coucal (missed at Bonamanzi and Cape Vidal), Giant Eagle Owl (best places are the southern part of Kruger NP and Kalahari Gemsbok NP), Mottled Spinetail (Pafuri area), African Broadbill (very elusive, best bet presumably the sand forest at Mkuzi), Half-collared Kingfisher (uncommon), Ashy Tit, Southern Pied Babbler (the latter two can be seen at Nylsvlei NR or Pilanesberg NP), Orange Ground Thrush (very elusive; best place probably Weza Forest, but also present at Pholongo Bush NR, Dwesa NR (winter) and Woodbush Forest Reserve), Grey Penduline Tit (fairly common resident, but miserably dipped by us), Cape Penduline Tit (idem), Broad-tailed Warbler (secretive in winter; Vernon Crookes NR is a well-known stake-out for this bird), African Yellow Warbler (locally common, but seasonal movements), African and Stierlings Barred Warbler (we played tapes for both species, but none were recorded), Pale-crowned Cisticola (Uncommon, indistinguishable from Ayres's Cisticola in winter; try Wakkerstroom, Utamvuna NR, Vernon Crookes NR or Hela Hela during summer or spring), Black-backed Cisticola (Empisini NR, Vernon Crookes NR, False Bay park, Cape Vidal area or Mkuzi), Plain-backed Pipit (not uncommon, we had bad luck), Bushveld Pipit (Kruger NP, Mkuzi), Short-tailed Pipit (uncommon, seasonal movements; try Vernon Crookes NR or the Sodwana Bay area in the Greater St.Lucia Wetland), Pink-throated Longclaw (one of the most difficult species; best places are the floodplain at Bonamanzi Game Reserve or the marshes along the road from St. Lucia to Cape Vidal; may be taped out), Red-billed Helmetshrike (Kruger NP or Hans Merensky NR), Golden Weaver (uncommon; occurs at Bonamanzi), Southern Brown-throated Weaver (same remarks as for the previous species), Red-headed Quelean (nomadic; both the HluHluwe airstrip or Bonamanzi may yield this species), Golden Bishop (possibly overlooked by us, locally common, for example in the Kimberley area), Cut-throat Finch (locally common in the northeast of the country; Kruger Park), Red-headed Finch (said to be not uncommon, especially in the Northern Cape province; can also be found at Suikerbosrand NR and other places), Quail Finch (a good spot for this skulker is described in Essential Birding, page 68: Bontebok NP) and Lemon-breasted Canary (Uncommon near-endemic; try the palm savannas in the northern part of Kruger NP or at Bonamanzi) among others.

THE boogey bird of the trip, however, was Striped Kingfisher. Amazingly, none were seen during the trip. We certainly must have overlooked some!!
Boogey bird number two is Spotted Dikkop. Although it's on our list, none showed during daytime. No decent views were obtained of this fairly common species.
