Slovakia
10 - 17 May 2006

  • Up very early unable to sleep very well because of the Nightingale singing just outside in the wood across the road, which we saw well when it got light enough to see....Richard Dunn reports

Slovakia & Czech Republic July 2005

  • This was part of a family holiday and not a birding trip and so only gives a flavour of the birds of the two countries. We drove from England and stayed in many different locations briefly before settling in Rakovec, a small village south of Zvolen for a week.....Brendan Threlfall and Suzanna Ivanic report.

Eastern Slovakia 25-28 May, 2004

  • After this, we went westwards, and entered the Zadiel gorge. This was a beautiful, beech-clad gorge, with a stream running down in the centre. Of special interest here where a pair of White-backed Woodpeckers, 2 singing male Red-breasted Flycatchers, breeding Dippers - at least one pair with more adults present, a male Rock Bunting cleaning himself in the creek, Grey Wagtails, Hawfinches and Marsh Tits...Hasse Berglund reports.

Some Useful bird books for Slovakia:
Do you have a good book for this region that we haven't featured? let us know

Collins Bird Guide
Lars Svensson et al: Buy from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk

  • Described by some as the best field guide in the world, and 15 years in the making. Has it been Worth the Wait?...Yes definately! If you buy just 1 book a year then make sure that its this one. Stunning drawings by the worlds finest bird illustrators..and it shows..check out the plates on tern, Skuas, and the Ducks...not forgetting the Finches and Crossbills.

The Complete Guide to the Birdlife of Britain & Europe
Rob Hume, Peter Hayman (Illustrator): Buy from Amazon.co.uk

  • This is quite simply the best illustrated guide to Europe's birds that I have seen. Every bird is pictured at least five times (and sometimes twenty times) in varying poses within its habitat. Seeing the birds in context, really gives this book the edge.
More than a field guide, the book is coffee table size, and certainly deserves to be in the collection of every serious bird watcher.

Recommended travel books for Slovakia:

Slovakia (Bradt Travel Guide Slovakia)Available direct from Bradt travel guides
Lucy Mallows
: Buy from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk

  • I have never found another guide that dealt with Slovakia in such a thorough manner. It has been well-researched and well-written and includes some interesting and amusing boxes on Slovak culture and history. I am thrilled that somebody has finally discovered the Slovak countryside, especially the regions in the east. As usual there is a helpful section on Slovakia's wildlife.

Lonely Planet: Czech and Slovak Republics
Richard Nebesky, John King, Neil Wilson: Buy from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk
  • This travel guide to Czech and Slovak Republics covers hotels and hostels, where to eat and entertainment options.
