A Report from birdtours.co.uk

Olu Deniz, Turkey (16/10/2009 – 23/10/2009),

Gary Oliver

I stayed in the Montana Pine Resort, approximately half way between Olu Deniz and Hissaranu.  The hotel was beautiful, and handy for the Lycian Way, which provided a pleasant stroll, with panoramic views of the countryside, including Olu Deniz itself.

I was essentially on a family holiday, and the birds I saw were mainly seen within a 30 minute walk of the hotel; Krupers Nuthatch and Syrian Woodpecker were only seen near the entrance to the Seklikent Gorge, during an excursion.

In total I saw only 34 species, A denotes Abundant; F Frequent; O Occasional; and R Rare.  This is not to say that Syrian Woodpeckers are rare in Turkey, just that I only saw a single bird during my stay.  Robin was by far the most numerous bird, accounting for at least 80% of all birds seen or heard, and Jay was also surprisingly common (the krynicki sub-species).  Some passage was detectable, with a movement of Spotted Flycatcher and Song Thrush noticeable on different days, and the Red-backed Shrike was an immature, seen only once.

Birding was certainly ‘challenging’; I met one other birder briefly during my stay, who had ‘amassed’ 28 species in his week’s holiday (which made me proud of my 34 !). However, the scenery is beautiful, the weather fantastic (34 degrees in late October !), and the holiday was great fun; the para-gliding in particular is simply not to be missed.
