A Report from birdtours.co.uk

Akyaka Turkey 13th August -20th August 2006,

Mark Graham

This small town at head of the gulf of Gokova is about 30 miles from Marmaris.
We stayed at the exceptional Ottoman residence a unique boutique hotel in the town. The holiday was arranged through Anatolian Sky and definitely recommended for those seeking a peaceful location in a beautiful hotel with some good birdwatching opportunities.
There is a large reed bed area, river delta  and river system which supports a good number of birds.Whether you are staying in Akyaka or in the vicinity this area is well worth a visit.

Birds seen

Huge numbers of Barn Swallow and Red Rumped Swallow.
Beeaters were seen regulary.
About 25 sightings of Common Kingfisher throughout the week.
3 Glossy Ibis seen including one which attempted to land in the hotel grounds.
Several sightings of Great Reed Warbler
Large numbers of Reed Warbler
One Cetti Warbler heard.
3 Sedge Warblers
White,Grey and Yellow [Feldegg] Wagtails seen regularly.
1 Common sandpiper.
A flock of Turtle doves
Magpies
4 Willow Warblers
5 Spotted Flycatchers
Moorhen,Coot and Mallard were seen regularly
1 Water Rail
Flocks of Goldfinch
Blue Tit,Coal Tit.House Sparrows are common
Collared Dove regular.
Good numbers of Hooded Crow.
Buzzards and 1 Eleanora Falcon seen from mountain area.
Several Yellow Legged Gulls out to sea.

Viewing

Apart from taking boat trips the best viewing areas are-
The area where new paved path starts nearing harbour,
The hotel if you are staying there,
The disused Fish Restaurant opposite house with large boat in garden{least disturbed area and best for Great Reed Warbler.Cetti warbler heard here.}
The  undeveloped area with no fish restaurants further away from town than disused restaurant.[best in morning when there was less traffic and people].Also good higher views from other side of the road.
Keep on walking further out of town from above till you get a good raised view of the area.
I would say this area would have good all year interest but especially good from April To September.
