A Report from birdtours.co.uk

North-Eastern Venezuela, March 2007,

Didier GODREAU

This report covers a trip of 8 days in Venezuela, lats march 2007, and fully organised by local company lead by Chris Sharp (sharpebirder AT gmail.com). Our local guide was the excellent Pepe Clavijo.

You can have some additional information on birding on this link :  http://www.birdvenezuela.com/

General information

Venezuela is split in different geographical areas:

Venezuela has more than 1300 bird species included 42 endemics.

Itinerary

The visited sites are not far from Caracas and allow visiting them after a few hours of driving.

Two main sites have been visited: Henri Pittier and Yacambù national parks – and a short visit to Morrocoy NP.

Durind out 7 days trip, we have identified 343 species (included 9 that we have only heard).

Flight

Flight from France is easy and direct with Air France.

Books

I have brought the Birds of Venezuela de Steven L. Hilty, and I can recommend the Birds of Northern South America, by Robin Restall, Clemencia Rodner and Miguel Lentino, that is very good for the maps and also all different subspecies.

Bird Company

My choice have been for the local company lead by Chris Sharpe and I highly recommand you to visit his web site at : http://www.birdvenezuela.com/chris_sharpe.htm

We have been lucky to be with local guide Pepe Clavijo, who is excellent for all kind of matters, with a great knowledge of the birds (especially their songs !) , and a very nice guy!

Spots

Found in 1937, Henri Pittier NP has a bird list of 580 species on 108000 hectares.

Rancho Grande biologic station is located in the cloud forest and excellent for birding.

Morrocoy NP

We have travelled to this park to find some local birds in the mangrove area, close to Tucacas town. (in the state of Falcon).

The park itself covers many small islands where many birds breed like frigatebirds and pelecans.

Yacambú NP

The park is located at 70 km to Barquisimeto town. (in the state of Lara).

Altitude of the park varies between 500 and 2200 meters. Vegetation is dense in the high altitude forest and scarse on the foothills.

DAY 1 (16th)

Jon, Nick and I arrived in Caracas on different planes, from Miami, Paris and London, and in time to meet our guide Pepe Clavijo and reach our first hotel in the Germanic-styled small town of Colonia Tovar.

We travelled the coastal road, and from the car we were able to identify brown pelicans and magnificent frigatebirds. In the countryside and villages we encountered Carib grackles, a flock of chestnut-fronted macaws, orange-winged parrots and some noisy rufous-vented chachalacas.

Total species for the day = 6

DAY 2 (17th)

We began the day along the Cortada de Maya road, and then moved on to the Ocumare Road in Henri Pittier National Park.

We found two species of antpitta this morning: a handsome chestnut-crowned that came right in and sat singing very close to us and a very hard to see slate-crowned, that perched on a low branch. Just before this, we heard and later got great views of a Caracas tapaculo.

Two different species of woodpeckers came close to us - a red-crowned and a smoky-brown.

Pepe hearded a green-and-black fruiteater but we could not see it!

We were able added streaked tuftedcheek and olivaceous woodcreeper to the list.

Pepe used tape playback to call out a black-throated spinetail that was hidden in a low bush and we got great views of this attractive, rufous bird.

In the deep forest we heard a distant white-tipped quetzal and collared trogon whilst white-collared swifts soar high overhead. A black hawk-eagle was drifting over us, and this was followed 10 minutes later by an ornate hawk-eagle - what a bird!

A short stop at a gap in the forest allowed us to see Tyrian metaltail, a mountain elaenia and a white-throated tyrannulet. Shortly afterwards we found some yellow-billed caciques and an oleaginous hemispingus.

In the open, arid and agricultural habitat of this mountain we found a wedge-tailed grass-finch, some rufous-collared sparrows and the tiny green-tailed emerald.

In the more savanna-like habitat we were able to get good views of a stripe-tailed yellow-finch, along with a few eared doves feeding on the ground on scattered seeds.

In the air the very common black vultures were omnipresent, and the yellow-headed caracara was also rather common in this area. We located a solitary American kestrel, a nice black-faced tanager and several small groups of tropical mockingbirds that were common in most open areas, as well as around human habitation. Several smooth-billed anis ("El pijul" in Venezuelan folklore) were feeding on the ground of the car park. We located a boat-billed flycatcher sallying out to catch insects in flight, and blue- and-white swallows were flying in their fluttery style over the villages and calling to each other with a buzzing “dzzzhreeee”!

On entering Henri Pittier NP we could sense great potential for new birds: in the flowering cecropias trees, many species ate the mature fruits.

This was a paradise for tanagers: common bush, highland hepatic, blue-grey, blue-capped, blue-winged mountain, white-lined, fawn-breasted, beryl-spangled, black-capped, swallow and bay-headed, along with an. We also succeeded in seeing from up close, a lovely black-faced antthrush walking on the ground, excited by our playback.

Some hummingbirds were also very active around the flowers: we could see some green violetears, black-throated mangos, copper-rumped hummingbirds, white-vented plumeleteers, violet-chested hummingbirds, one bronzy inca, and some elegant long-tailed sylphs accompanied by the always present bananaquits.

A perched yellow-olive flatbill looked out for insects whilst a buff throated saltator and a rufous-breasted wren foraged for them amongst the thick vegetation. Further below we found foraging olive-backed, montane and cocoa woodcreepers.

Several russet-backed oropendolas were very noisy and builded their nests just over the road.

Some migrants birds foraged in the trees: American redstarts, blackburnian and chestnut-sided warblers.

On the way back to the posada we found some new birds like a white-tailed kite, a plain-breasted hawk and, approaching the small town, some cattle egrets and bare-faced ibises.

(We spent the night in Posada El Limón, a very nice place!)

Total species for the day (seen and heard) = 95, with 94 new species

DAY 3 (18th)

We birded the Rancho grande Biological Station and the Andy Field trail, in Henri Pittier NP.

We arrived early morning to visit the Andy field trail and the first birds we could see were some foraging blood-eared parakeets, and one flying red-billed parrot.

Near the main block, a Northern waterthrush was looking for some worms.

Several Vaux's swifts were flying over the station, with a few white-tipped swifts amongst them.

The first section of the trail produced some groove-billed toucanets and a golden-olive woodpecker, and a few band-tailed guans were visiting the surrounding dense forest.

Migrant birds were moving through - a cerulean and several blackpoll warblers. A local slate-throated whitestart was building its nest.

In the distance, we heard the call of a Highland Tinamou and also a Venezuelan wood-quail.

We had the chance to spot one moustached puffbird, and a few minutes later a calling guttulated foliage-gleaner.

We came across a pair of agitated crested spinetails and a very active grey-throated leaftosser. We were all very happy to see handsome fruiteater – a female, and then a male just a few minutes afterwards!

We were also very lucky to see the extremely elusive Southern nightingale-wren.

Various thrushes were looking for some berries – a black-hooded, a pale-breasted and a white-necked.

We heard an Inca jay calling from the canopy, and singing rufous-browed peppershrikes.

We found a pair of golden-fronted greenlets, the endemic Venezuelan bristle-tyrant, a white-throated spadebill, a white-fronted tyrannulet and a plain antvireo.

A black-banded woodcreeper was looking for insects along a dead trunk.

We looked for and later saw the near endemic plain-backed antpitta, and found a few moments later a cooperative short-tailed antthrush. After this memorable encounter, we managed to see a pair of slaty antwrens. A rufous-lored tyrannulet was a good bird for all of us, and we also managed to see one of my favourite birds – a male scale-crested pygmy-tyrant!!

Going back to the main block we saw birds coming to the feeders: palm, golden, speckled and silver-beaked tanagers, green and purple honeycreepers and orange-bellied euphonias.

We spotted a perched blue-naped chlorophonia in a big tree. Not far away we were able to scope a masked tityra.

As Southern rough-winged swallows and grey-rumped swifts flew over the station we were treated with a male stripe-throated hermit looking for sugared water in the empty feeders, and we heard a blue-black grosbeak calling from deep inside the forest.

At the end of the afternoon a lined quail-dove crossed the trail above us, and we heard calling foothill screech-owls nearby - it took us a long time to finally found the two birds that were just above our heads roosting!!

We had a stop to scan a small stream, and we found a sharp-tailed streamcreeper.

(We spent a second night in Posada El Limón.)

Total species for the day (seen and heard) = 76, with 46 new species

DAY 4 (19th)

We birded mainly the Choroní Road, in Henri Pittier NP.

On the very top of the road, we arrived early and heard a very low call: it was made by spectacular Northern helmeted-curassow! Unfortunately, we could not find this bird, which was probably far away below us.

We could spot some scarlet-fronted parakeets eating some fruits in a tall tree.

A little hummingbird was perched near some red flowers: it was a speckled hummingbird.

A few minutes later, we could see at the same place a booted racquet-tail and a wedge-billed hummingbird.

Looking for new species, we were lucky to found a super active streak-capped treehunter, and also montane and buff-fronted foliage-gleaners.

A nice streaked xenops was also very appreciated by all of us!

Pepe could show us a new exciting bird that was the Schwartz's Antthrush!!

In the forest, we could hear some singing birds like the grey-breasted wood-wren, the Andean solitaire and a whiskered wren. We could hear also some band-tailed pigeons calling.

A small flock of lilac-tailed parrotlets flew above our heads!

Some ochre-breasted brush-finches were very active, and we could found also some chestnut-capped brush-finches too!

We made a new stop to find the endemic scallop-breasted antpitta: the bird was perched one meter off the ground only five meters off the edge of the road, but unfortunately did not come in for great views.

After that good search, we had good views of a Venezuelan tyrannulet, an olive-striped flycatcher and a handsome beryl-spangled tanager.

Some migrants birds were there: many blackburnian warblers, a few Tennessee warblers. We succeeded to see also some three-striped warblers.

Pepe was the only guy to see the endemic rufous-cheeked tanagers, mixed with other tanagers in the high canopy!

We had then excellent views of the golden-breasted fruiteater but also the brown-capped vireo.

Going back to the car, we spotted a pair of ochre-breasted brush-finches and one bluish flowerpiercer.

A few glossy-black thrushes were feeding on the ground near the parking area.

At the end of the day, we could spot a band-winged nightjar.

(We had a new night in Posada El Limón.)

Total species for the day (seen and heard) = 68, with 20 new species

DAY 5 (20th)

We visited for the last time the Henri Pittier NP (Ocumare Road) then birded the tidal flats and Cerro Chichiriviche of Morrocoy National park.

The coastal road allowed us to see some American flamingos and flying neotropic cormorants and feeding roseate spoonbills. On the beach, we had quick view of American oystercatchers.

After a few minutes we hearded a plain-flanked rail that called in the deep mangrove but remained uncooperative to us.

It allowed us to see a golden warbler and also a bicoloured conebill, two species that call this mangrove habitat home. On a small pond, we found a lesser yellowlegs and a solitary sandpiper.

A ringed kingfisher was waiting for potential fish!

Looking for another spotted in the mangrove area, we succeeded to see this rare endemic plain-flanked rail, good but short view!

After that we went to the Cerro Morrocoy area to have a nice lunch and later began to bird the road down. We began with the scrub greenlet, black-crested antshrikes, black-backed antshrikes and very handsome and singing white-bellied antbirds.

We added some other species like rufous-winged antwren, Northern white-fringed antwren, buff-breasted wren, lance-tailed manakin and scaled piculet.

A long-billed gnatwren was climbing on a vine, foraging for spider eggs.

We failed to see a calling rufous-and-white wren!

We had the chance to have a good view of a pale-bellied hermit. Same thing with a curious pale-tipped inezia that came to us!

We could hear some birds walking on the dry leaves, there were some red-legged tinamous and Jon succeeded to see some of them.

Some scaled doves were foraging on the ground and we found some white-tipped doves looking for same food.

In the dense bush, some brown-throated parakeets were forgaging for fruits.

A tropical parula was calling a sharp ‘tsit’ and caught a small spider. A golden-crowned warbler was close to the parula and tried also to catch some small invertebrates.

We succeeded also to see one Venezuelan flycatcher, a flying grey-headed kite and a splendid blue-crowned motmot.

A rufous-tailed jacamar was calling in the forest and we could spot a few glittering-throated emeralds. A pair of tropical gnatcatchers was very curious and came to us!

A few flying turkey vultures were looking for some food along the road. We spotted also a flying great black hawk and a perched roadside hawk.

A white-tailed hawk joined the party and a crested caracara too!

Some noisy great kiskadees were perched on the telephone poles.

A flock of green-rumped parrotlets was flying over the canopy.

We hearded a kind of trill and found an active pale-eyed pygmy-tyrant. A Trinidad euphonia was also calling close to the tyrant.

(We had a night in Moroccoy in posada La Arboleda)

Total species for the day (seen and heard) = 115, with 49 new species

DAY 6 (21st)

We birded in the morning the Agua Linda Road, South of the city of Tucacas.

The habitat was pastures and gallery forests with small marshes.

We began with a pair of mating horned screamers, and a few herons like a rufescent tiger-heron, a flying great blue beron, great and snowy egrets, little blue and striated heron. Some glossy ibises were flying over us and one wood stork.

Some raptors were also flying over the pastures: a lesser yellow-headed vulture, a black-collared hawk and a zone-tailed hawk.

Our next bird was very exciting: the rusty-flanked crakes were rather shy but responded well to the tape. Close to the water, we could see some wattled jacanas and a limpkin.

One pair of black-capped donacobius was singing in the marshes.

In the bushes, we could hear and put the scope on a group of yellow-crowned parrots and later some orange-chinned parakeets.

Near the water, we could also spot a greater ani and some groove-billed anis. We could hear a hidden striped cuckoo. A greyish Saltator was foraging on some insects.

We spent more than 30 minutes to look at different species of flycatchers and tyrants: vermilion flycatcher was the first to display, and after we could watch some rusty-margined and bran-coloured flycatchers; common tody-flycatcher, Southern beardless-tyrannulet, mouse-coloured tyrannulet, Northern scrub-flycatcher, white-winged becard, yellow tyrannulet, a tawny-crowned pygmy-tyrant and a brown-crested flycatcher.

We spot also some skulking pale-breasted spinetails, and a straight-billed woodcreeper.

A lesser kiskadee was chasing some insects while a masked yellowthroat tries to imitate him!

Not far from the marshes, we could see a flock of birds: some glaucous tanagers, a pair of white-eared conebills, a thick-billed euphonia and a bigger bird that was a russet-throated puffbird. A cinereous becard was perched in the open.

Close to a small pond, we had a very close view of a forest elaenia.

We could add also a pair of plain thornbirds that flew across the track, and landed in small tree.

In the grasslands around we spotted some new species like a flock of blue-black grassquit mixed with grey seedeaters and saffron finches, and a pair of large-billed seed-finch qualified as mega birds by Pepe!

Near the dirty road, we could see some crossing crested bobwhites and some southern lapwings in the fields. Some common ground-doves were looking for some seeds on the ground.

A few Caribbean horneros were seen easily due to their loud calls.

We found a squirrel cuckoo well hidden in the dense bush, trying to catch a small lizard!

In the late afternoon, we had a little time to visit the acacia-dominated desert scrub: we could spot a very nice Venezuelan troupial, a female of vermilion cardinal, a Orinocan saltator perched on a cactus, a pair of excited bicoloured wrens, a stripe-backed wren, and  a few of slender-billed inezias.

A pair of barred antshrikes was looking for some insects, in the shade of acacia trees.

We had the pleasure to look at this white-whiskered spinetail that was one of our favourite birds of the trip!

While taping for the ferruginous pygmy-owl that arrives very quickly, we could look also to a few buffy hummingbirds.

A flock of gregarious grey-breasted martins were flying over the road, hunting for insects.

Before going to our hotel, we made a stop to a quarry and look for local Tocuyo sparrows: after a first very shy bird, we could found another one more cooperative!

A pauraque flew from a pole and tries to catch some insects. We added a common nighthawk that has this typical erratic flight.

(We had a night at Posada El Encanto, in Sanare.)

Total species for the day (seen and heard) = 122, with 70 new species

DAY 7 (22nd)

We began to bird the Yacambú National Park and the Blanquito road and the recreational area.

Our very first bird of the rising day was a rufescent screech-owl that responds to the tape of Pepe! Nice owl!

On the small lake itself we could easily watch some noisy least grebes, Caribbean coot, and flying ruddy pigeons.  A few giant cowbirds were looking for oropendola nests to parasitise.

The emerald toucanets were noisy and easy to spot!

We were happy with some various warblers: black-throated green warbler, black-and-white warblers, and tropical parulas, but also many tanagers that seem to breed there in the pine trees around.

These tanagers were: burnished-buff tanager, blue-necked tanager, black-headed tanager, saffron-crowned tanagers, a pair of white-winged tanagers, some summer tanagers, and the rare fulvous-headed tanager.

A shiny golden-rumped euphonia was also exciting to watch with the scope!

Some golden-faced tyrannulets were looking for flying insects.

A male of black-throated mango was perched quickly close to us!!

We had a nice view for a slaty-capped flycatcher.

Under the forest, we spotted a lek of white-crowned manakins with a few male birds!

We had difficulty to see the elusive slaty-backed nightingale-thrush and orange-billed nightingale-thrush.

Yellow-legged thrush was much easier to see there! We could put the scope on a chestnut-crowned becard perched on a tree.

A male of violet-crowned woodnymph was perched on eye-level for our great pleasure!

We were lucky to find a pair of stripe-breasted spinetails and variegated bristle-tyrant,.

We also found a stunning red-ruffed fruitcrow, highly perched in the treetop and doing the low, pigeon like calls.

In the dense forest, we could spot the spectacular crested quetzal and masked trogon.

We could spot also a female of red-headed barbet that moves the leaves on the ground.

A bit further on, we could watch at the very shy rusty-breasted antpitta that came out from the deep thickets for our viewing pleasure.

We had very good view for a nervous cinnamon flycatcher, a perched smoke-coloured pewee and handsome yellow-bellied siskins.

We stopped to another place in the forest to found some highly perched yellow-billed toucanets.

A Mérida tapaculo was singing in the low bushes.

The continuous call of a brown tinamou added something special to this very nice place!

(We had a new night in Sanare at Posada El Encanto.)

Total species for the day (seen and heard) = 121, with 37 new species

DAY 8 (23rd)

We bird all the morning in Yacambu.

In the afternoon, we visited again the scrubby area in Lara State.

We visit again the quarry area as to found some new species: we succeed to found a single grey pileated-finch and a few sooty-capped hermits.

We found also a straight-billed woodcreeper in an acacia tree. A plain xenops was also tring to found some food along the same trunk.

After that, we had a good view of a male of blue-tailed emerald.

In a denses scrubby area, we spotted also a pearly-vented tody-tyrant and a rusty-margined flycatcher. A yellow warbler was chasing some small insects.

Some brown-chested martins were hovering in the sky.

On a close artificial pond, we found some blue-winged teals. In the dry herbs around, we could see some black-faced grassquits and some.

We found a streaked saltator that tries and catch some insects. We put the scope on a yellow oriole that sings with a pleasant melodious fluting!

A male of black phoebe was perched near the water and a very attractive pied water-tyrant too!

A Harris's hawk was flying high in the distance, and a broad-winged hawk came to us.

We look for a brilliant male of vermilion cardinal and found one perched on the top of a cactus, not too long for our expectations!!

One bird was difficult to spot: the pale-headed jacamar. We followed a dry river in this arid and scrubby area, and found one after one hour of searching.

A flying bare-eyed pigeon came across our road.

After a short stop to a small pond, we found a greater yellowlegs and a common moorhen.

An Eastern meadowlark was perched above the road on a pole. A flock of shiny cowbirds were close to the cattle.

(We had a night in Barquisimeto, at Posada La Segoviana.)

Total species for the day (seen and heard) = 139, with 20 new species

DAY 9 (24th)

We proceed directly to the airport via the Rafael Caldera Highway, the Morón Road and the  Autopista Regional del Centro. During the one hour spent in traffic around Caracas we manage to add one last new bird to the trip – a short-tailed hawk!

Alas, our trip is at an end….

One new bird this day and a total of 343 species for the trip!
