This impossibly graceful raptor was seen on a number of occasions at the Imataca Reserve, along the Capuchinbird Road and especially along the Escalera, where the largest flock seen was 17 at km133 on 11th July.

One in Maracay on 15th July.

Common and widespread, particularly in the Imataca Forest Reserve.

One at Ocumare on 15th July.

This smart raptor was seen at Cano Ajies on 4th July,  and at Villa Lola Marshes on 8th July, singles both times.

Seen in a variety of locations.

One seen while driving between La Vuelta Larga and El Palmar on 5th July,  one between El Palmar and Las Claritas on 8th July, and one at km151 on the Gran Sabana on 12th July.

HARPY EAGLE Harpia harpyja
An immature bird, watched for a couple of hours at the Imataca Reserve on 6th July, was one of the highlights of the trip

Superb views of one in the late morning at Colonia Tovar on 3rd July.

3 flying over the road just outside the Imataca Reserve on 6th July were our only sighting of this species.

One seen on the drive from Caracas airport to Colonia Tovar on 2nd July, and 5 seen at Ocumare on 15th July.

One seen in the Imataca reserve on July 6th by DL only.

BAND-TAILED GUAN Penelope argyrotis
One seen flying towards us along the Choroni Road in Henry Pittier NP on 14th July, being hotly pursued by an unidentified raptor, before crashing into some undergrowth!

One seen very briefly on the road on the way to Finca Vuelta Larga. One seen again briefly on the road at the Imataca Reserve on 7th July, followed shortly after by good views on a roadside pool. 2 also seen in Maracay on 15th July.

Foothill Screech-Owl Otus roraimae
Excellent views of a taped-in bird before dawn near Rancho Grande on 15th July.

Black-and-white Owl Strix nigrolineata
One seen in response to tape before dawn along the Choroni Road in Henry Pittier NP on 14th July.

Short-tailed Nighthawk Lurocalis semitorquatus
6+ before dawn along the Choroni Road in Henry Pittier NP on 14th July.

Band-winged Nightjar Caprimulgus longirostris
Excellent views of 2 before dawn along the Choroni Road in Henry Pittier NP on 14th July.

Blackish Nightjar Caprimulgus nigrescens
Superb views of three roosting birds seen in late morning at the Imataca Reserve on 7th July. They were found in two small stoney clearings in the forest. If approached too closely they would show their agitation by bobbing up and down, as if doing “push-ups”. If flushed they would generally fly around the clearing for a short while before settling again on the warm stone quite close to their original position. Sometimes they would settle on the low branches of a tree. After taking a few photos of this species which is not often encountered in the day we left them in peace. Superb.

Also a nightjar, probably of this species, seen along the lower stretch of the Escalera just after dawn on 9th July.

TEPUI SWIFT Cypseloides phelpsi
3 seen at km122 along the Escalera on 11th July, then excellent views on the Gran Sabana on 12th July, with a low flying flock of ca25 at km175 and a few in a large flock of swifts at km151. One other bird seen at km123 on the 13th July.

Common and widespread, with a number of large flocks seen.

Band-rumped Swift Chaetura spinicauda
Several seen over the Capuchinbird Road on 10th July.

Vaux's Swift Chaetura vauxi
Two near Colonia Tovar on July 3rd. One at Rancho Grande on 16th July.

Short-tailed Swift Chaetura bra chyuran
One at Finca Vuelta Larga on 5th July, also seen at the Imataca Reserve.

White-tipped Swift Aeronautes montivagus
5+ around the field centre at Rancho Grande on 15th July, and lots there the following day.

Several seen each evening at La Vuelta Larga.

Fairly common at Cerro Humo on 4th July. Quite an impressive hummer.

Excellent views of one at Colonia Tovar on 3rd July, 2 along the Choroni Road in Henry Pittier NP on 14th July and one male at Rancho Grande on 16th July.

Black-eared Fairy Heliothryx aurita
We encountered this enchanting sprite on a couple of occasions, at km111 along the Escalera and along the Capuchinbird Road, both on 10th July.

Amazonian White-tailed Trogon Trogon viridis
One male seen at Cano Ajies on 4th July, another male at Finca Vuelta Larga on 5th July and another on the Escalera on 9th July. A female was seen (from the road!!!) at the Barquilla de Fresa on 11th July.

Collared Trogon Trogon collaris
One male at Cerro Humo on 4th July, 3 along the Choroni Road in Henry Pittier NP on 14th July and one at Rancho Grande on 15th July.

Masked Trogon Trogon personatus
A moulting male was seen at km134 along the Escalera on 11th July, and another male at cakm111 on 13th July.

One high in trees at km111 on the Escalera on 9th July, with a pair in the same area the next day.  Also one seen near the Capuchinbird lek on 11th July. Would be easy to overlook.

Russet-throated Puffbird Hypnelus ruficollis
A bird of the “double-banded” form was in residence around the accommodation at La Vuelta Larga, and the “single-banded” form was seen along the Ocumare Road at Henry Pittier on 15th July.

Black Nunbird Monasa atra
Just one seen, in a treetop at the Imataca Reserve on 7th July.

FERRUGINOUS-BACKED ANTBIRD Myrmeciza ferruginea
One played cat and mouse with us in undergrowth after we heard it calling near the road at the Imataca Reserve on 7th July. It eventually gave excellent views after some coaxing with the CD. Typically the first bird we then saw as we embarked on a nearby trail was another perching openly! An absolutely stunning character.

3-4 of this classy species were seen in a mixed flock with the following species at the Imataca Reserve on 7th July.

Plain-backed Antpitta Grallaria haplonota
Although heard regularly at Rancho Grande, this species proved fiendishly difficult to see despite much effort, with good, brief views for DL but little more than a frustrating glimpse for RR.

Chestnut-crowned Antpitta Grallaria ruficapilla
One of the highlights of the trip was the excellent views of this striking species at Colonia Tovar on 3rd July, with a further 2-3 heard.

One of the race ‘pariae’ were seen very well at Cerro Humo on 4th July. This race is regarded as a potential split by David Ascanio.

SCALLOP-BREASTED ANTPITTA Grallaricula loricata
The undoubted highlight of the trip was the unbelievable views obtained of this little gem in Henry Pittier NP on 14th July. Even David said they were the best views he’d had!

CARACAS TAPACULO Scytalopus caracae
At least 4 seen and others heard in hills above Colonia Tovar on 3rd July. They responded very vigorously to tape.

Golden-breasted Fruiteater Pipreola aureopectus
3 seen along the Choroni Road, in Henry Pittier NP on 14th July.

HANDSOME FRUITEATER Pipreola formosa
At least 5 of the race ‘pariae’ were seen very well at Cerro Humo on 4th July. This race, which shows much more red on the underparts than the nominate ‘formosa’ race of the northern coastal cordillera, is regarded as a potential split by David Ascanio. This latter race was seen along the Choroni Road in Henry Pittier NP on 14th July (one male). A superb bird.

RED-BANDED FRUITEATER Pipreola whitelyi
One female seen well albeit fairly briefly at km120 along the Escalera on 11th July was one of our major successes on this part of the trip.

Screaming Piha Lipaugus vociferans
Heard frequently and a couple seen in the Imataca Forest Reserve. Also heard along the lower part of the Escalera on 9th July.

Purple-throated Fruitcrow Querula purpurata
A male and 2 females at the Imataca Reserve on 6th July, and one along the Capuchinbird Road on 11th July.

CAPUCHINBIRD Perissocephalus tricolor
3-5 seen very well in the area of the lek along the Capuchinbird Road in the early morning on 10th July, possibly more heard. Also heard here in the afternoon. A truly bizarre species!

Bearded Bellbird Procnias averano
3 heard at km131 on the Escalera on 9th July. One (prob imm. male) seen at km133 along the Escalera on 11th July, and a female in the same area next day.

GUIANAN COCK-OF-THE-ROCK Rupicola rupicola
Excellent views of a female which dropped into roadside vegetation at cakm111.5 along the Escalera on 10th July was, sadly, the only one of this sought-after species seen.

SHARPBILL Oxyruncus cristatus
We were delighted to find this strange and enigmatic species on two occasions on the upper Escalera: at km134 on 11th July, and one at km133 the following day (possibly the same bird).

CRIMSON-HOODED MANAKIN Pipra aureola
One seen at a known lek at Finca Vuelta Larga on 5th July. It came in after a brief play of the CD, and sat on a horizontal branch for several minutes watching us. Brilliant.

It was with some relief that we finally located a male of this cracking tepui endemic, at km133 along the Escalera on 12th July. It didn’t hang around too long but we both got great views. Excellent.
