A Report from birdtours.co.uk

Samos, June 2002,

Doug and Lynda Haynes

We have just returned from a two week holiday on Samos, before I went I visisted the Birdtours web site and printed the Samos 2001 report to take for reference.

We are not experts just keen birdwatchers when we have the time. I am sending you a list of what we saw on our travels around Samos which I hope will be of some interest to you. We stayed at the Dionysos studios which was close to the Zeus appartments in Ireon.

Ireon area

Little Egret
Goldfinch
Jay
Nightjar (heard 10-06-02) on rough ground near appartments and seen flying across the beach area on the 11th right in front of the Taverna's
Greenfinch
Hooded Crow
House Sparrows
Blue Tit
Chaffinch
House Martins
European Swifts
Rollers ( two pairs ) seen regularly by the bridge at Milli
Blue Rock Thrush, at the same site

Psili Amos

We visited the area twice, on the first occasion 10th we saw 40 ish Black Wing Stilts including six very young.
One Ruddy Shellduck
Crested Larks

On our second visit on the 17th the lakes were almost bone dry and looked like salt flats. The only birds on the lake area were one adult and one recently fledged young Black Winged Stilt

Other birds seen around the island were :-

Short Toed Eagle
Chukar
Red Kite
Woodchat Shrike
Red Backed Shrike
Pallid Swifts. Samos Town, Harbour area
Black Eared Wheatears x2 Near Spathei
Little Owl ( dead on roadside near Mitilini )
Moorhen
Collared Doves

I have probably missed a few common species out but as you can see we had quite a good time for a couple of amateurs, as well as a fantastic annual holiday.

Why not send us a report, or an update to one of your current reports?
