A Greek Birding Odyssey March-July 2015

  • Apart from a two week holiday on Crete in 1986, when I had only just taken up birding, I had never visited Greece and so my wife, Ann Shaw, and I chose the country for our first long trip away in our campervan following Ann’s retirement in 2014.  Greece was chosen for its birding and hill-walking potential as these are our two chief hobbies and, together, determine the destination of all our holidays....Gary Jones reports

Northern Greece and Bulgaria 5 -19 May 2012

  • On the trip we saw 25 raptors, a number almost impossible to see in the other European countries. My main purpose was to see the Rock Partridge, one of the very few birds in the Western Palearctic I have not seen....Jan Vermeulen reports.

Southern Pelion 13th-27th May 2011

  • Our visit to this delightful part of Greece was primarily a holiday for rest and relaxation but, like birders everywhere, we always had our binoculars to hand and our eyes and ears open...John and Jo Tallon report.

North East Greece 25th April-9th May 2010

  • This was our third trip to this part of Greece and the second in spring. It proved as enjoyable as we expected with highlights including Great Snipe and Olive Tree Warbler...Ian Kinley reports.

Yialova, Western Peloponnese 16-30 September 2007

  • In need of a relaxing mixture of beaching and birding, we spent the last two weeks of September in the delightful village of Yialova, just north of Pylos. This has the twin attractions of the beautiful horseshoe-shaped beach of Voidokilia a few kilometres up the coast and the wetland nature reserve of Divari Pilou lagoon...John and Jo Tallon report.

North East Greece April 30th - May 11th 2007

  • 163 species have been recorded. At nearly each stop, a Corn Bunting, a Nightingale, and a Golden Oriole could be heard. Those birds are really abundant but their numbers decrease going north to Lake Kerkini. 20 Red-footed Falcons resting at Lake Volvi....Christian Dortu reports.
Dalmation Pelicans

North East Greece 7th-21st September 2006

  • Equally memorable were the sheer numbers of some of the commoner species: more Spotted Flys in a day than you see in Britain in a decade, more Red-backed Shrikes in a day than in a lifetime back home...Ian Kinley reports

Dalmatian and White Pelicans

North-eastern Greece 29 January-3 February 2005

  • the whole area, and especially the Evros Delta, is exceptionally good in mid-winter for wintering geese and eagles and in this report I will try to convey what we saw, learnt and felt (mainly cold) during a six-day visit to the Evros delta and Dadia-Soufli forest areas in the days from 29 January to 3 February 2005...Ernesto Occhiato reports.
Pygmy Cormorants

Lake Kerkini

  • Lake Kerkini, the premier birding site in Greece, is looking for volunteers to help monitor the Spring Migration. We offer you the chance to contribute to the effort to save this wonderland, an amazing birding experience and free accomodation for the duration of your stay. Visit the website above or contact Gordon Ramel.

Prespa National Park, Northern Greece June 2nd-7th 2004

  • I hope that this trip report will be useful for a guide for anyone wishing to visit the area, it is one of the most beautiful places on the planet, and the scenery is quite awe inspiring with the mountains adding a dramatic backdrop to the two lakes. I hope that I will have the time to visit the area again in the near future....Derek Gruar & Irini Koutseri report.
spur-winged plover

North East Greece 5th-19th May 2004

  • North East Greece proved a good choice with highlights including spectacular views of an adult White-tailed Eagle at point blank range, displaying Eastern Imperial Eagles, stunning close views of Spur-winged Plovers, a flock of 20 Broad-billed Sandpipers and a Red-necked Phalarope....Ian Kinley reports

North East Greece May 8-15th 2003

  • We motored on to Porto Lagos and found the salt pans, wader lagoon, and the coastal lagoon. At last we were amongst the birds. Little Egrets, Curlew Sandpipers, Little Stints, Kentish Plovers, Ruff, Oystercatchers, Grey Plovers, Bar-tailed Godwits, Turnstones, Sandwich Terns, and Little Terns....Ray Thorneycroft reports.

Parga, Greece 3-17 May 2003

  • This was our 1st visit to the Greek mainland although we had previously visited Lesvos (twice) & Crete...The weather was hot (39C generally), above the norm for this time of year & dry throughout the holiday...Dave & Lin Oulsnam report

Parga area of North western Greece 21/09/02 to 05/10/02

  • I had two target birds only and connected with one of them.  Pygmy Cormorant, which I got at Ioanini Lake, and Penduline Tit, which I never saw or heard, although we did see a number of their old nests.  This did disappoint me, as I was more than hopeful of connecting with this bogey bird of mine...John Jennings reports.

North Western Greece, Parga (Valtos) 9th/23rd September 2001

  • There must have been a large influx of migrants over the previous few days; this plus the actions of the local shooting fraternity may have concentrated the birds into this area. The first sight that greeted me was Woodchat Shrike, Stonechat, Cirl Bunting and Collared Flycatcher on the telephone wires, Little Owl and Lesser Kestrel on the fence posts and 2 Black Necked Grebes and Little Egret on the waterway....Maurice Berry reports.

Athens, Greece and Environs early October 2001

  • While attending some meetings in Athens, I had the chance to do a little birding between sessions. Here are my field notes...Gary Bletsch reports.

Birdwatching in North West Greece May 1998

  • These notes were compiled from observations taken during my family holiday, based in Parga, Epirus, from 20 May to 03 June 1998. We stayed in the Nikitas apartments, in Valtos, which is half an hours walk from Parga. We hired a car for one week and I was able to use these for early morning birding trips, as well as a couple of afternoon excursions and one full day...Chris Cameron reports

  • This quide is not only stunningly beautiful but full of general info as well: along with the Rough Guide, DK's is absolutely essential. No other guide has so much to show you - visually. It seems incredible that so many finely rendered photographs have been included - but they have! This book is a triumph over mediocrity: it bristles with colour and light and we can only get lost in the splendour of it all.
