Bibliography

Identification

The Birds of South America  Vols. 1 & 2 : Ridgely and Tudor- an essential reference, but too bulky to take into the field. I overcame this by videoing plates and selected text on to digital video tapes.

A Field Guide to the Birds of Peru
: Clements and Shany-
despite its shortcomings, very useful- especially in the north.

Collins Illustrated Checklist to the Birds of Southern South America and Antarctica
: De La Pena and Rumboll-
despite the poor plates, indispensable Prior to the publication of Birds of Chile ( see below).

Raptors of the World
: Ferguson Lees and Christie-
I photographed the relevant plates. Very useful.

Birds of Chile
: Jaramilo, Burke and Beadle.
The long awaited field guide that wasn't published until Nov. '03. Will undoubtedly become the standard reference.

Manu - Les Oiseaux de Polynesie : Collection Survol
- fairly basic and in French, but useful for the seabirds on Easter Island.

Voces de la Fauna Chilena : Egli -
a very useful CD of 80+ species.
I also obtained tape recordings of a number of species from David Cooper who had visited Chile previously.

Status

Threatened Birds of The World : Birdlife International.

Site Guides

The Essential Guide to Birding in Chile : Pearman - a little out of date, and doesn't cover the south, but still very useful, although now out of print.
Where to watch birds in South America : Wheatley- a good starting point.

Trip reports

The following reports were particularly useful (and see reports at "Birdtours")

Chile and Argentina : J Hornbuckle  Oct. to Nov. 2000
Chile : B Wright et al  Nov. to Dec. 1998
Chile : J Penhallurick  Nov. to Dec 2001
Chile : D & J Cooper  Oct. to Nov 2001

I am also grateful to the people at Fantastico Sur in Punta Arenas who kindly provided me with gen. for the area around Punta Arenas.

General

Chile and Easter Island  - Lonely Planet - as usual, very useful.

Maps

Collins - Argentina and Chile  adequate.
Pearman proved particularly useful, as well as the privately published trip reports.

Introduction

We traveled to Chile from Bolivia, where we only spent a few days. Prior to that we spent 5 weeks in Peru. We therefore didn't spend a lot of time looking for species we had already seen in Peru, and that included Diademed Sandpiper- Plover, Tawny-throated Dotterel, Peruvian Pygmy-Owl, Giant Conebill etc.

We bought an airpass  prior to leaving the UK and used the excellent internal air network to get around, and also hired cars in a number of places. Although expensive, this proved worthwhile, as even with a month it would have been a bit of a push relying on public transport.

Chile is a great place to go birding- the scenery is spectacular, the people friendly and the country has  something of a European feel. Learning a little Spanish helps as many people do not speak much English.

There are some great birds and finding most of the goodies is reasonably straightforward.
