Recent reports 2003 onwards....

Reports pre 2003

Portugal –The Algarve 2–9 November 2002

  • I had close flight views of 2 Great Bustard on the track signposted to Monte Cumeada Nova and another view of a bird on the track to Monte de Hortinha flying toward me at about 100m distance giving superb flight views.  27 Little Bustard were seen at the bridge on the N123.  These were flushed by one of the numerous Red Kite...... Mark Easterbrook reports

Southern Portugal, June 16th - 30th 2002

  • This was a strictly birding holiday hoping to see Great & Little Bustard, Red Necked Nightjar, Rock Bunting & Great Grey Shrike...Stephen and Pat King report.

Portugal 31st May to 4th of June 2002

  • On the 3rd day (June 2nd 2002) we headed out to the national park at Marvão. This is an absolutely fantastic place and is well worth a visit...Matt Hale reports.

Winter birdwatching report for Portugal 18th-25th Nov.2001

  • We stayed at Oasis Village in Vilamoura, which turned out to be a brilliant place for birdwatching. With a recently created nature reserve 'The Parque Ambiental' in the Riba de Quarteria marshes & Laguna golf course area. It has a hide overlooking a pool with others planned. I could have happily spent the whole week there and wouldn't have needed a car as the apartment was in walking distance...Geoff Williams reports.

Algarve, Portugal May 31st  - June 14th 2001

  • What a fantastic area this is! The Castro Verde - Mertola - Almodovar triangle contains arguably some of the best grassland steppe in Portugal providing habitat for some cracking birds including Great and Little Bustards....Mick Bell reports.

Portugal 7th- 21st June 2001

  • This is a brief report of the birding I did while on a family holiday to the Algarve. We stayed in a villa at Sesmarias, near Carvoeiro. I did two early morning trips, one to the Castro Verde area to look for Bustards, and the other to Pera Marsh. I made an evening trip to the Odelouca Valley for Red-necked Nightjar...Mike Taylor reports

Southern Portugal June 1-9th 2001

  • I took a weeks 'non-birding' holiday with my girlfriend, based in Tavira. Before going I'd negotiated two morning's birding so, in light of the limited time, decided to concentrate on birds I needed for my Western Paleartic list...Ben Miller reports

Southern Portugal 5 – 19 May 2001

  • We started out at 06:30 hours Sunday morning walking along the cliffs to Burgau to get ourselves accustomed with the area and to look for breakfast.  On opening the villa door we were greeted with "Wet My Lips"; our first tick was to be Quail.  This was to occur most early mornings at Casa da Primavera. We continued along a very pleasant cliff top path to Burgau.  Other birds of note along here were Yellow-legged Gull, Red-rumped Swallow, Cattle Egret, Crested Lark, Woodchat Shrike, Blue Rock Thrush, Sardinian Warbler & Fan-tailed Warbler...Richard Wesley reports

Southern Portugal. March 2001

  • Nancy and I took this trip on a spur of the moment decision to hopefully get Little Bustard onto our life list. The whole arrangement was set up within 3 days of our departure on 14th March 2001...David and Nancy Massie report.

Southern Portugal, Algarve and Alentejo May 2000

  • We found a number of differences between spring and mid-summer visits. The likes of Cattle Egret, Roller, Bee-eater and Azure-winged Magpie, though all seen easily enough, were less numerous and widespread in spring. Collared Pratincoles seemed to be just arriving, with none on the Alentejo, and there were no large flocks of Cattle Egrets at Ludo or Sao Laurenco. On the other hand, larks were much easier...Ian Kinley reports

Portugal: Algarve & Alentejo April 2000

  • The air was filled with Swallows (incl. red-rumped), Martins (house and sand), Swifts (pallid & alpine). There were numerous Hoopoes ,Serins and Sardinian warblers plus Little Owls and Bee-eaters. The whole effect was magical with the sounds and flower scents adding to the atmosphere..Alec Cheney reports

Southern Portugal 19 - 26 September, 1999

  • This was planned as a short relaxing autumn break with my wife Sara, with the emphasis on an easy pace rather than dawn to dusk birding. I have travelled fairly widely in Europe, and consequently the number of lifers on offer was rather limited. Nevertheless, I was very pleased to come away having seen 4 life birds, although rather disappointed to have failed to see a fifth. The total number of species seen was 90, which wasn't too bad at all given the relaxed nature of the birding and the time of year...Gruff Dodd reports.

Portugal (Albufeira.) May '99

  • You would envy the birds seen from the apartment. Which included Purple Heron, Purple Gallinule, Black Tern, Bar tail and Black tail Godwit, Common Sandpiper, Whimbrel, and the star of the show being a fly by from a Red necked Nightjar. All within half a mile from where we were staying...A report by John Jennings
Portugal (Algarve and Alentejo) 1999
  • This was a family holiday based at Vilamoura on the Algarve, from 29th May to 12th June 1999. Vilamoura is a good resort for birders, because it is close to some of the best birding sites in southern Portugal and has one outstanding site of its own...A report by Colin Davies
Portugal July '99
  • Following Colin Davies quick trip report from Villamoura-the resort became the our family holiday destination. Even though it was late July it was brilliant..By Joan Thompson

The songs and calls are extremely well notated, even though the pronunciation takes some getting used too. Many pictures for each species. Very information dense. Buy it. The best available bird identification book for Portugal.

Birds of Europe with North Africa and the Middle East
Lars Jonsson: Buy from Amazon.co.uk

  • A highly illustrated guide covering all but a few of the Western Palearctic's breeding birds, and includes information on all regularly encountered vagrants. "If you only take one field guide with you in Europe, then take this one. It leaves the others standing."
