One week Birdwatching at Tavira, Algarve, Portugal March 2008
- My wife and I had a pleasant time in warm sunshine mainly centred on the saltpans which are part of the ria Formosa natural park. We saw about 80 species of birds which included large flocks of migrating waders and some leaf warblers....Alec Cheney reports.

- The main reason
for visting was of course the Great Bustards, and I picked up
four from a farm track near San Marcos
de Ataboeria; there was a Little
Bustard calling off the same track and I flushed a Quail....John

Quinta
Da Lago, Algarve, May 12th-18th
2007
- I continued to
the coast turning right from the hide towards Quinta Do Lago
and soon had my attention on various waders feeding on the
tidal mud. A flock of 100 Knot in breeding plumage was a stunning
sight as they rose as one, disturbed by a low flying White

Portugal 17-24 March 2007
- As we had arrived
in the dark I had no idea what our local area was like
so my pre-breakfast outing was a walk to get a feel of the place.
Almost the first bird seen was Hoopoe, and Serins were
singing all around. Within five minutes I had my first
lifer in Azure-winged Magpie, which turned out to
be common in the area. Already I was starting to like this

Birding Trip to Faro, Portugal and Coto Doñana Spain
12th December – 15th December 2004
- We had an excellent trip and saw just a couple
of species shy of 150 birds in those short winter days. Most of
us had not been to any of the sites before. On Monday we had booked

Independent Bird Watching
in the Algarve and Alentejo area September
18th - 26th 2004
- After watching Azure Winged Magpies, the
Moscovy Duck, Kingfishers and Wagtails from our balcony we ventured
down to a breakfast, this was served in a delightful room over
looking the river. The drive north and then west along the N122/123
towards Castro Verde was beautiful. We took our time, with me
on lookout duties. We were rewarded with stunning close views
of a pair of Great Bustard who were in no hurry to exit....Pearl

Southern Portugal, Algarve
& Alentejo May 6th to May 20th 2004
- If you are thinking of visiting the Algarve
for birds make your visit soon, as building developments in the
form of Resorts, Marinas and Golf Courses are taking over many
of the better birding areas, which seem to be given little or

Southern Portugal 29th
April - 13 May 2004
- We returned to Quinto do Rocha but
it was a wet and miserable day so we used the car as a hide with
occasional dashes out with the scope when the rain stopped. There
were more waders out on the sandspit today. A local birder told
us that the sandspit is a good place to see Audouin's Gull but
most of the individuals will be juveniles and hence a bit tricky
to identify at long distance....Alan and Rose Saunders

Southern Portugal
June 24th - July 8th 2003
- Even if this was a typical family holiday
with wife and kids, I was still hoping to find time to enjoy
some good birding. And I really did, in less than two weeks
(June 24th and July 8th were merely "transport"
days) I did see plenty of interesting birds, many of them
new to me. Considering this was late June/early July with
few or no migrants around, I was very impressed and pleased....Trond

Portugal –The Algarve
2–9 November 2002
- I had close flight views of 2 Great Bustard
on the track signposted to Monte Cumeada Nova and another view
of a bird on the track to Monte de Hortinha flying toward me at
about 100m distance giving superb flight views. 27 Little Bustard
were seen at the bridge on the N123. These were flushed by one
of the numerous Red Kite...... Mark Easterbrook

- This was a strictly birding holiday hoping
to see Great & Little Bustard, Red Necked Nightjar, Rock Bunting

- On the 3rd day (June 2nd 2002) we headed out to the national
park at Marvão. This is an absolutely fantastic place and is well
