Extremadura May 2010 a report in .pdf format (783kB) by Niels Riis

Extremadura, via Portugal April 19-24, 2009

  • In fields at the start of the road, we spotted a group of Great Bustards, 22 in total, some of which flew across the road giving good views...Alan Jack reports.

Madrid Province (pdf file) March 2008, Jan van der Laan

Roller

Extremadura and Sierra de Gredos, 20th to 30th May 2008

  • There were many highlights: excellent views of Spanish Imperial and Bonelli’s Eagles, Black Storks, Eagle Owls and three species of vulture amid the superb scenery of Monfrague; both bustards and both sandgrouse on the plains and, of course, White-rumped Swift...Ian Kinley reports.

Fifteen "Burbagebirders" go wild in Extremadura March 2008

  • We drove a little further and found a Purple Swamp-Hen in the reeds and an obliging Zitting Cisticola, which uncharacteristically posed for a few minutes in front of us...Ken Reeves & Neil Glenn report.

Andalucia and Extremadura 2nd-9th December 2006

  • From the visitor centre we saw only a small group of about 200 Greater Flamingo’s. But in that small group 2 Lesser Flamingo’s were picked out easily! What a start of the holidays!...Sander Bot reports

Extremadura July-August 2006

  • Ok is it just me or does anyone else hate these guides that say birding in July and August is useless? Isn’t this the only time to go for people who are tied to school holidays?...Michael Binns reports.

Extremadura and Northwestern Spain 12th to 23rd-April 2006

  • Some Great bustards may be only 200 m from the road....Sitting unobtrusively in the county for hours is often more rewarding than zigzagging around for a new tick. (I DID see the eye colour of a Black-shouldered Kite and a Spanish Imperial Eagle!) Lutz Lücker reports

Central Spain 28-30 May 2005

  • I have had an ambition for some time to try to see all the regularly breeding and wintering birds in Europe, and over the years I have whittled down the number I have left to see to just 11.  I therefore decided to make a short trip over to Central Spain in order to try to tick off two of these, namely Little Bustard and Western Orphean Warbler....Gruff Dodd reports

Extremadura April 2005

  • I decided to attempt a two area trip in a very short space of time (six days) first birding the typical Extremadura areas followed by a brief visit to the Donana area in Andalucia. Hopefully this report provides some up-to-date 'gen' and shows what the independent birder can achieve with only a limited time-frame...Nigel Voaden reports

Extremadura 24th March-April 1st 2005

  • Having nothing special to "tick" off in the Extremadura area, my main aim was to get GOOD views of certain raptors and steppe birds. As 99% of the area is fenced in, many birds have a very short flight distance. Some Great Bustards were only 200 m from the road...Lutz Lücker reports

Extremadura April 2005

  • In a boom moment of activity of Sandgrouse and Bustards, nine Dotterels flew past very fast, and we heard several Collared Pratincoles....Cristian Jensen reports for Birdseekers tours.

Extramadura, Spain 18 May until 25 May 2004

  • This report covers my short trip to Spain to do some easy birding with my girlfriend Susanne Jacops. I could see 3 new birds which are Western Olivaceous warbler, Rufous-tailed Bushrobin and Dupont's Lark. We succeeded in the last species but the 2 former are not so easy in the Extramadura....Tom Goossens reports.

Central and Western Spain including Extremadura May 2003

  • Our first stop was Embalse de Arroyocampo. In the reed-bed east of the road we easily found 1 Purple Swamphen, and heard a Savi's Warbler singing. A group of Vultures overhead included 5 Black Vultures. Many other birds around this good site included 2 Gull-billed Terns, Booted Eagle and Egyptian Vulture...Ben Miller reports
Great bustard

Extremadura April 16th-26th 2003

  • Having nothing special to "tick" off in the Extremadura area, my main aim was to get GOOD views of certain raptors and steppe birds. As 99% of the area is fenced in, many birds have a very short flight distance. Some Great bustards were only 150 m from the road.... Sitting unobtrusively in the county for hours is often more rewarding than zigzagging around for a new tick...Lutz Lücker reports

Extremadura 28th May to 7th June 2001

  • We found everything in Monfrague very easy to see and could easily have left the area after three or four days, though we had pre-booked seven nights at Torrejon and, in any case, did not fancy travelling any great distance to a new location. Other birders would doubtless have done it differently. Almaraz would have provided a suitable base to explore all the sites we visited, entering Monfrague from the other end of the park, though Torrejon undoubtedly had more character...Ian Kinley reports

Extremadura April 11th-19th 2001

  • Having nothing special to "tick" off in the Extremadura area, my main aim was to get GOOD views of certain raptors and steppe birds. As 99% of the area is fenced in, many birds have a very short flight distance. Some Great bustards were only 100 m from the road. Sitting unobtrusively in the county for hours is often more rewarding than zigzagging around for a new tick. (I DID see the sparkle in an Imperial Eagle's eye AND the eye colour of a Black-shouldered Kite!)...Lutz Lücker reports

Extremadura, Spain 29 January – 4 February 2001

  • The first main stop was at Embalse de Arrocampo (Arroyocampo in Muddeman), in glorious afternoon sunshine.  Here the group were treated to extremely close views of Purple Gallinule, accompanied by their unusual calls, plus those of Water Rail.  A low Black Vulture gave superb views, and the first Hoopoeof the trip put in an appearance.  Disturbance amongst the Lapwings, Golden Plover and starling flocks led to the sighting of a Peregrine, while two separate Marsh Harriers also flew over...Steve Rowland reports

Birding in Central and Western Spain 9th - 13th June 1999

  • This short birding trip to the Madrid area of Central Spain and to Extremadura was made by Mike Ball and Stephen Mawby with the express intention of each seeing up to six needed species for their Western Palearctic lists.

Birdwatching on Spains Southern Coast
John R. Butler: Buy from Amazon.co.uk

  • Written by local expert and guide, John Butler, "Birdwatching on Spain's Southern Coast", is the ideal accompaniment for the holidaying birder on Spain's Southern Coast. The real strength of this guide over similar books is the information about the lesser known sites close the resorts of the Costa's. Great if you only want a quick hours early morning jaunt before the heat of the Summer sun becomes unbearable. Also covered in good detail are Doñana and the main Almeria sites...Recommended.

Where to watch birds in Southern and Western Spain
Ernest Garcia and Andrew Paterson: Buy from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk

  • The reprint and update of this excellent book have been long awaited. I have birded in this region of Spain many times and yet I still have much to learn, Garcia and Paterson are the experts. Where else in Europe can you see five species of swift in one day? Did you know that Ruppel's Griffon Vulture is now regular in part of the region? New sites have been added and access details thoroughly updated. Areas covered include birding hotspots such as Extremadura, Gibraltar and Ronda. A "must buy" if you are traveling to Southern Spain.

Collins Bird Guide
Lars Svensson et al: Buy from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk

  • Described by some as the best field guide in the world, and 15 years in the making. Has it been Worth the Wait?...Yes definately! If you buy just 1 book a year then make sure that its this one. Stunning drawings by the worlds finest bird illustrators..and it shows..check out the plates on tern, Skuas, and the Ducks...not forgetting the Finches and Crossbills.

Where to Watch Birds in North and East Spain
Michael Rebane, Stephen Message: Buy from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk

  • North and east Spain embraces an impressive range of habitats from the Pyrenees to the sun-drenched Catalan coast. As a consequence the area is rich in birdlife and full of potential for visiting birders. The 189 sites are described in terms of habitat, access and the species to be seen. The 104 major sites are accompanied by a map as well as maps of the region to show the location of each site.

Birds of the Strait of Gibraltar
Clive Finlayson: Buy from Amazon.com

  • The Strait of Gibraltar is famous as a major point of passage for Palaearctic birds migrating between their European breeding grounds and their winter quarters in Africa. The author, a native of the Rock, presents an account of the region and its resident and transitory bird life

Recommended travel books for Spain:

The Rough Guide to Spain
Mark Ellingham: Buy from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk

  • Published Jan. 2002, "The Rough Guide to Spain" is thoroughly up to date (all the prices are in Euro's!) and of the usual high standard that we have come to expect from Rough Guides. This is an excellent guide to my favourite place in Europe for a bird watching holiday. Over a thousand fact filled pages entice the reader to visit the towns, castles and Moorish villages, so full of character and history. For the birder, there is a very useful section on wildlife that gives an overview of the birds to be seen and the main regions to see them.

The Rough Guide to The Pyrenees
Marc Dubin: Buy from Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk

  • Anyone could find their perfect retreat in the Pyrenees, a range that encompasses in its four-hundred-kilometre length a diversity of landscapes rarely equalled in Europe. Between the balmy beaches of the Mediterranean and the more turbulent Atlantic coast lie regions of lush meadowland, peaks permanently clad in ice, sun-beaten canyons of sinuously sculpted rock, swathes of dense broadleaf forest, weirdly eroded limestone pinnacles and valleys so sheer and overgrown that scarcely a ray of light penetrates them.
